On Tuesday Hannah Georgas announced a new album, the Aaron Dessner-produced “All That Emotion”, and shared a new song from it, “Dreams.” The album is due September 4th via Brassland and Arts & Crafts.

“Dreams” is the third collaborative single between Georgas and Dessner, after “That Emotion” and “Same Mistakes.” All three songs are featured on All That Emotion.

Georgas had this to say about “Dreams” in a press release: “In my past, I have let my insecurities play into relationships and have pushed people away because I have felt like I’m not deserving of love. This song explores the idea of breaking down those barriers of insecurity and being more open.”

Georgas began working on All That Emotion about a year after her 2016 album, For Evelyn.

She had this to say about the album in the press release: “I have been thinking about what this album represents to me and it is resilience. It’s about finding hope and a way out the other side of tough situations. The hardships we go through make us grow into stronger people. The album is about healing, self reflection and getting up again at the end of the day.”

Georgas wrote All That Emotion in 2017 in her Toronto apartment and during a “month-long retreat” in Los Angeles. She started recording the album in 2018 at Dessner’s upstate New York Studio.

“Before each session, I would make the long drive from Toronto to Hudson Valley in Upstate New York.” Georgas says in the press release. “It was really special getting the opportunity to work in such a remote space with Aaron and Jon and I was always itching to get back whenever we had breaks. At the same time, I appreciated the space in between and coming back with fresh ears…. Aaron and I agreed the production needed to bring out the truth in my voice. During these sessions we musically found a new depth and, vocally, a delivery that was more raw and expressive, allowing the emotional texture of each song to shine through.”

After a near 11-year long period the The Fiery Furnaces came back on Thursday with the new single “Down at the So and So on Somewhere,” courtesy of Third Man Records. The last we heard from the brother/sister duo of Eleanor and Matthew Friedberger was 2009’sI’m Going Away, released in November of that year. “Down at the So and So on Somewhere” is being released as a 7-inch vinyl by Third Man. The songs were recorded in New York City and a few hours north of New York City on February 3rd and February 10th – 12th, 2020,” the band collectively say in a press release. “‘Down at the So and So on Somewhere’ is a regretful song about having regrets. Now it seems even more sad than we thought it was back then: ‘Will you meet me.’”

Starting off with a dark synth, midi-drums and a single piano note, the track nostalgically looks back at what could have been. The chorus then picks up with some brighter synth, additional keys and airy falsetto wondering: “Don’t you remember we were happy then?/Can you remember we’re right now?”  Bittersweet and gorgeous, fits perfectly among the poppier tracks they’ve done before while having a hidden melancholic edge.

The 7-inch includes the additional track “The Fortune Teller’s Revenge” on the B-side. A portion of proceeds will also be donated to Black Lives Matter and AACM Chicago, the duo’s hometown city.
The Fiery Furnaces were scheduled to perform at this year’s Pitchfork Music Festival, which was unfortunately cancelled due to the coronavirus. In the last decade the duo has released eight solo albums collectively .Released June 18, 2020 Producers: Eleanor Friedberger, Matthew Friedberger

New Order Jon Hopkins Anna Calvi More Contribute to New Alzheimers Benefit Album
A whole lot of great artists have contributed exclusive tracks to this new compilation that benefits Alzheimer’s research. Comps like this are by nature hit and miss, but this one has lots of hits. Among them: New Order resuscitate the ’80s “extended mix” for a nine-minute version of “Nothing But a Fool,” the best song on Music Complete; new Mute signing HAAi’s spooky, throbbing, sultry “Drumting”; Astronauts, Etc.‘s deep shag bachelor pad track “The Border” (shades of Air); and smoldering garage number “Friday the 13th” from Wolfmanhattan Project (aka Gories’ Mick Collins, Kid Congo Powers and Sonic Youth’s Bob Bert).

There’s also Hayden Thorpe & Jon Hopkins‘ haunting cover of “Goodbye Horses” by enigmatic cult artist Q-Lazzarus, a song that Jonathan Demme used first in Married to the Mob and then again, to much more memorable effect, in Silence of the Lambs. This cover was originally released in 2013 on the b-side of a repress of Q-Lazzarus’ original, but hasn’t been available for five years. With used copies going for big bucks on Discogs, it’s reason enough to pick this up. There’s also tracks from Moby (an Eno-esque instrumental, very nice), Beach Slang (a nice if wrote cover of The Church’s “Under the Milky Way“), TR/ST, Anna Calvi, Daniel Avery, and more.

The Longest Day is a very personal project. Mona Dehghan, who runs Mon Amie Records, lost her grandmother to Alzheimer’s in 1998 and her father was diagnosed with dementia last year. The artwork and photography is by Brookyn Vegan contributor Ebru Yildiz who documented her mother’s journey with Alzheimer’s.

Those who preorder by July 7th will have the option to include a tribute name in the liner notes to honour a loved one affected by dementia. In any case, it’s not on streaming services, so pick this one up and support Alzheimer’s research.

Oh Sees’ frontman John Dwyer pays tribute to cult psych artist Michael Yonkers; Hopefully it’ll make you want to seek out the original artifact

Minneapolis’ Michael Yonkers is a cult legend who pushed psych-rock further into the red than many had before on his 1968 album Microminiature Love, which was reissued, some 30 years later, first by Dej Stijl and then Sub Pop Records. On that and other albums, you can hear the seeds of the early ’00s garage rock revival, and Yonkers was a clear influence on groups like Black Lips, Oh Sees and current Minneapolis band The Blind Shake with whom he’s made records.

Oh Sees frontman John Dwyer is an especially big fan and has just released an album of Yonkers covers under his Damaged Bug solo alias, though in this case he’s backed by current Oh See Tom Dolas, and former bandmates Nick Murray and Brigid Dawson. “This record was recorded as a way to reboot and reconnect with some songs that have heavily inspired me over the years,” says Dwyer. “It was hard to pick from his vast catalog, so I just sort of jumped in, and these are the tunes that stuck to the wall.”

I don’t claim to know much about Yonkers, but this record is good. Unlike some of the other Damaged Bug records (which can be on the esoteric side), Bug Out Yonkers is very approachable and could easily pass for an Oh Sees record. You can tell Dwyer is having a blast with this and the production / arrangements are great, with out-there synths and the occasional flute solo alongside wigged out guitar work. Originally a Record Store Day 2020 exclusive, Bug Out Yonkers has been bumped up to a proper release, which is good. If you’re like me, it will send you immediately to the internet to learn more about Yonkers’ wild world.

Wire have never been ones for looking back. When they reformed in the ’80s they got a Wire cover band, Ex Lion Tamers, to open for them on tour so they wouldn’t have to play songs from their first three albums. When they do revist older material, they are prone to transforming it, like on 1989’s IBTABA. Forty-plus years into their existence they’re still doing it. Having already released a new studio album this year, they’re back with new-album “10:20″ that is based on this premise:
When Wire plays live there are, in the main, three classes of piece: new songs, old songs and ‘new old’ songs. The latter often involves taking something that existed on a previous release and re-working it, very often evolving a stage highlight from it. There also pieces that have never seen a major release but for some reason never fitted on an album.

The reworked songs on 10:20 represent Wire from two different eras — one relating to Red Barked Tree and recorded in 2010, and another relating to Mind Hive and released in 2020. The album works both as terrific new record and one that will be especially of interest to fans. This was originally intended as a Record Store Day 2020 exclusive but when COVID-19 messed everything up, they smartly decided to give it a proper release.

The first four songs, from 2010, are from when Margaret Fielder (of Laika) was a member of the group. “Boiling Boy,” originally on 1988’s A Bell is a Cup Until it is Struck, becomes lean and sinewy, slithering like a moray eel along to Graham Lewis’ bassline and Robert Grey’s precision drumming. “German Shepherds,” a b-side from the same era that was already reworked for IBTABA, now becomes a second cousin twice removed to 154’s “Map Ref. 41°N 93°W.” “He Knows,” a song that was a late-’00s live staple that never made it to an album, is Wire in creepy mode; and “Underwater Experiences” is full-on punk, that actually dates from their ’70s era, powered by an ambulance siren guitar riff.

The 2020 side features the Wire line-up that’s been constant for the last 10 years (Newman, Lewis, Grey and former It Hugs Back frontman Matthew Simms). “Over Theirs,” originally on 1986’s great The Ideal Copy, becomes a piledriver; “The Art of Persistence,” which could be the title of Wire’s biography, is another great “lost” song; and “Small Black Reptile” saves a great song from 1990’s uninspired Manscape, giving it a much more immediate arrangement (two two versions might as well be totally different songs.

Despite the two sides being made a decade apart, “10:20″ holds together remarkably well and is another fine entry in one of the most consistent discographies of the last 43 years.

Thurston Moore continues to put out previously-unreleased songs from his vault during quarantine. These previously unreleased songs appear on his Bandcamp page, and he also recently put out a new instrumental and now he announced a proper new album, “By the Fire” its first single, “Hashish” .He made the album with his former Sonic Youth bandmate Steve Shelley on drums, My Bloody Valentine’s Deb Googe on bass and backing vocals, and James Sedwards on guitar (all of whom are also in the Thurston Moore Group), and it also features contributions from Wobbly (aka Jon Leidecker of Negativland) on electronics and Jem Doulton on drums. Thurston calls “Hasish” an ode to the narcotic of love in our shared responsibility to each other during isolation,” and it’s a relaxed yet hypnotic song that sounds like classic Thurston Moore, and is a very promising first taste of this LP.

Thurston also said:
“By The Fire” is music in flames. 2020 is our time for radical change and collective awareness and Thurston Moore has written nine songs of enlightenment, released to a world on fire. Taking a cue from Albert Ayler’s “music is the healing force of the universe”, this recording offers songs as flames of rainbow energy, where the power of love becomes our call.

These are love songs in a time where creativity is our dignity, our demonstration against the forces of oppression. By The Fire is a gathering, a party of peace — songs in the heat of the moment.

“Dark Town” is the second release from Brisbane alt-country outfit, Suicide Country Hour.  Their new album expands on the introspective feeling of their first release with a darker, more heartbroken collection of songs which speak to the bitterness and sadness in us all. It’s the epitome of ‘hangover music’ and most importantly…no drummers, no dramas.

The new album expands on the introspective feeling of the sextet’s 2017 self titled debut with an even darker, more heartbroken collection of songs which speak to the bitterness and sadness in us all.

singer/songwriter Harry Nilsson who was born on this date June 15th, 1941 in Brooklyn, NY.
Nilsson moved to Los Angeles as a teenager to escape his family’s poor financial situation. While working as a computer programmer at a bank, he grew interested in musical composition and close-harmony singing, and was successful in having some of his songs recorded by various artists such as The Monkees.
In 1967, he debuted on RCA Victor with the LP “Pandemonium Shadow Show”, followed by a variety of releases that include a collaboration with Randy Newman (“Nilsson Sings Newman”, 1970) and the original children’s story “The Point!” (1971).

His most commercially successful album, “Nilsson Schmilsson” (1971), produced the international top 10 singles “Without You” and “Coconut”. His other top 10 hit, “Everybody’s Talkin'” (1968), was featured prominently in the 1969 film “Midnight Cowboy”. A version of Nilsson’s “One”, released by Three Dog Night in 1969, also reached the U.S. top 10.

During a 1968 press conference, the Beatles were asked what their favorite American group was and answered “Nilsson”. Sometimes called “the American Beatle”, he soon formed close friendships with John Lennon and Ringo Starr. In the 1970s, Nilsson and Lennon were members of the “Hollywood Vampires” drinking club, embroiling themselves in a number of widely publicized, alcohol-fueled incidents. They produced one collaborative album, “Pussy Cats” (1974).

After 1977, Nilsson left RCA, and his record output diminished. In response to Lennon’s 1980 murder, he took a hiatus from the music industry. For the rest of his life, he recorded only sporadically.

The RIAA certified “Nilsson Schmilsson” and “Son of Schmilsson” (1972) as gold records, indicating over 500,000 units sold each. He earned Grammy Awards for two of his recordings; Best Contemporary Vocal Performance, Male in 1970 for “Everybody’s Talkin'” and Best Pop Vocal Performance, Male in 1973 for “Without You”.

Nilsson passed away January 15th, 1994 at the age of 52.

What do you do when pain blots out joy? How do you learn to take care of yourself? What happens when the things you think are helping end up doing the most harm? ‘Auto-Pain’ is the Sophomore album from Deeper, a record that finds the band embracing open space, using synths to create shadows where bricks of guitars once would’ve blocked out the sun. The group — singer and guitarist Nic Gohl, bassist Drew McBride, and drummer Shiraz Bhatti — were all graduates of Chicago’s rich DIY scene who came together around their love of Wire, Devo, Gang of Four, and Television.

While the new record is still within the Great Lakes post-punk tradition of their debut, the album isn’t as insular as its predecessor; it’s less interested in pile-driving and more willing to dwell in liminal spaces. Guitars enter the picture precisely, locked bass grooves propel things forward. Drummer Shiraz Bhatti, who is half-Pakistani and half-Native American, embraced the drumming patterns he’d heard growing up at pow-wows, channeling the anxieties of his heritage into his playing and keeping the group grounded when they switch into all-out percussive attack. The result is an album both more nuanced and catchy.

A complete triumph–a document of overcoming total loss. one of the most exhilarating records of the year, These guys can put out some stunning music. They do a great job making something exciting and original out of their influences, even when dealing with some heavy and serious subjects.

Deeper is a band based in Chicago, Illinois and consists of Shiraz Bhatti, Nic Gohl, and Drew McBride.
