Jimi Hendrix’s version of ‘Gloria’ is a dynamic and heavily improvised cover of a classic rock song originally written by Van Morrison for the band Them. The Jimi Hendrix Experience’s version was recorded on 29th October 1968 at TTG Studios in Hollywood and stands out for its unique, humorous take on the lyrics and arrangement.
Hendrix transformed the simple lyrics into a surreal tale. In his version, the mysterious “Gloria” knocks on the door in the middle of the night, enters the room and sits on his chest.
Jimi weaves his bandmates into the lyrics. He mentions that drummer Mitch Mitchell and bassist Noel Redding also had their own ‘encounters’ that night with girls named Gloria.
The song ends on a chaotic and amusing note when the police (‘the man’) knock on the door, and Hendrix hurriedly tells Gloria to run away.
As well as Hendrix’s characteristic, gritty guitar riffs, the track features sections in which Jimi directly introduces Noel’s bass solos and Mitch’s drumming displays.
