Using their time in lockdown wisely, The Menzingers have re-recorded their brilliant 2019 album “Hello Exile” and reimagined the 12 tracks for a new stripped-down record, “From Exile”.

To coincide with the announcement of the LP – which is due out on September 25th digitally, and available on vinyl from November 19th – the Philly punks have also unveiled new renditions of Strawberry Manson and High School Friend from the album, which you can check out below.

“The live music industry vanished before our eyes, and just like that we were out of work like tens of millions of others,” explains singer/guitarist Greg Barnett of how From Exile came about.

“As the weeks progressed the upcoming tours got rescheduled, then rescheduled again, then effectively cancelled. There were times when it all felt fatal. There’s no guide book on how to navigate being a working musician during a global pandemic, so we were left to make it up as we went along. We wanted to document and create in the moment, and though we couldn’t be in the same room together due to social distancing lockdowns, we got creative.”

Greg continues: “We would track the songs from our own home studios, share the files via Dropbox, and pray it all made sense when pieced back together. Initially, we planned for the album to be similar to our acoustic demo collection On The Possible Past, but we quickly found out that this batch of songs benefited from more detailed arrangements

“We rewrote, and changed keys and melodies. We blended analogue and digital instruments in ways we never had before. We dug through old lyric notebooks and added additional verses. We got our dear friend Kayleigh Goldsworthy to play violin on two songs. No idea was off limits. Hell, I even convinced the band to let me play harmonica on a song – no small feat! The recording process ran from mid-March till June, and upon completion we sent it over to our dear friend and close collaborator Will Yip to mix and master.”

Bully are one of the most exciting punk bands of the past decade. 2015’s Feels Like and 2017’s Losing didn’t necessarily reinvent anything, but its fuzzy, melodic rock songs were consistently invigorating, with Alicia Bognanno’s raspy voice packing a major punch. Bognanno is behind the boards again for her new record “Sugaregg”, but this time she’s joined by a producer for the first time, John Congleton—not the worst choice for your first co-producer! Even after just one spin, it’s clear that Bognanno hasn’t taken her foot off the punk gas pedal. Her third album and second for Sub Pop is empowering, unrelenting and utterly gripping, with a chance of raw explosiveness at any moment. Even the more subtle numbers like “What I Wanted” and “Prism” will leave a cloud of exhaust smoke and tread marks.

Bully thrives in discomfort. The disconnect between “normal,” actualized and idealized ideas of life rages through their music. The pull toward a spiritually-dead life as a milkman, emotional stasis in the face of outward turmoil, trying and failing to even understand your own mind; these spectres haunt and propel Bully’s music. On the band’s new single, “Every Tradition,” the second off of their forthcoming album, “Sugaregg” (out on August. 21st via Sub Pop Records), Bully leans into the underlying conflict of their music. With incendiary guitars and Alicia Bognanno’s sneering delivery, the band unleashes an anthem for anyone finding themselves out of step with the expectations that are placed on them

“Every Tradition” by Bully from their album “SUGAREGG” (Release Date: 21st August 2020 on Sub Pop Records)

Bully’s “Hours and Hours” is the latest standout from Sugaregg, her incredible new album.

Alicia Bognanno offers this about the song, “‘Hours and Hours’ is about my mother and I finally figuring out our relationship. She and I had a really hard time connecting growing up and at times felt like it would never happen. Over the past five years we have become best friends, she is now the very first person I call when I am at my absolute lowest and has saved my life. I realize now how similar we are and how that probably had everything to do with why we had a difficult time with each other growing up. I wish I knew sooner how much we could relate but am eternally grateful that we have figured it out now and I’m just so thankful to be on good terms, I love her dearly.”

Bully will release “Sugaregg” on August 21st, 2020 worldwide through Sub Pop Records.

The Tom Petty estate has dug into the late musician’s vault and shared a lost cut from his historic “Wildflower” sessions dubbed “There Goes Angela (Dream Away).” Petty’s family released a demo version of “You Don’t Know How It Feels” in June and confirmed that an expanded version of 1994’s Wildflowers LP was underway. “The family and the band are in a joyful process of discovering the “Wildflowers” sessions and demos.

Another track from Tom Petty’s long-awaited Wildflowers box has been released. It’s a demo made at home for the song, The cut premiered today on Petty’s SiriusXM station, with Heartbreakers keyboardist Benmont Tench and engineer George Drakoulias showing up on David Fricke’s program for the debut. This acts as yet another teaser of a new Wildflowers celebratory release, to be an “exhaustive chronicle of the making of one of Petty’s most enduring albums.”

As Adria Petty explained in June, “The family and all our engineers and the Heartbreakers have been circling around this project and making it as delightful and completist as possible. We’re really pleased to be able to share the second half of the Wildflowers double album. But there are also completist versions of how the sessions evolved. My dad was prolific at that time and there was so much recording done.”

No further details about the expanded version of Wildflowers have surfaced yet, but Heartbreakers guitarist Mike Campbell has speculated that the band could regroup to perform the record when it finally does come out. “It would be a great tribute to Tom just to do that album,” he said. “We’d probably have four or five different guest singers with us. We don’t know who they might be, though, or when this might happen.”

Interestingly, the only way to access “There Goes Angela (Dream Away)” is to complete a short Tom Petty quiz.

Whether singing about frozen pets in the basement or frozen people in a cryogenic chamber, it’s been a minute since Chicago-based Ratboys last album, 2017’s GN.  We were graced with the teaser of a lovely follow-up four song EP, GL in the interim.  The core duo of Julia Steiner (vocals, guitar) and Dave Sagan (guitar) have been backed by a revolving door of rhythm sections to this point, but have announced permanent members in Marcus Nuccio (drums) and Sean Neumann (bass).  The cohesiveness certainly shows on their upcoming third album.  Printer’s Devil (another stumbled upon and appealingly odd title) releases via Topshelf Records on February 28th, and the opening track and first single, “Alien With A Sleep Mask On” charges hard out of the gate.

If you have a hankering for guitar-based indie rock, Sagan really lets it fly and Steiner’s agile vocals cruise ably alongside without showing any signs of cracks.  The band doesn’t hesitate to throw in some alt-country vibes or drone-drenched passages, but Steiner’s contributions always keep things buoyant.  With the new album and an extensive tour poised for the spring thaw (including SXSW dates), the upcoming Chinese Year of the Rat looks primed to be renamed the Year of the Ratboys.

To celebrate 40 years since the release of their first ever recording, Soft Cell re-issue their seminal debut EP Mutant Moments.

Originally released as limited run of 2000 7 EPs in October 1980 on the band’s own Big Frock imprint, the release sold out immediately. Apart from various unofficial bootlegs, this much-revered and influential slice of electronica has been unavailable on vinyl for nearly four decades.

The D’Addario brothers will return this Autumn with their third Lemon Twigs album, “Songs For The General Public” – written, recorded and produced by the D’Addario’s at their home studio in Long Island, Sonora Studios in Los Angeles and Electric Lady in New York City.

The prodigiously-talented brothers first emerged as The Lemon Twigs in 2016 with their debut LP Do Hollywood, whose show stopping melodies mined from every era of rock quickly earned fans in Elton John, Questlove, and Jack Antonoff.  Go To School, the ambitious 15-track coming-of-age opus, followed in 2018 and solidified the band’s reputation for building grand walls of sound around an audacious concept.

The D’Addario brothers return with their third Lemon Twigs album, written, recorded and produced by the D’Addarios at their home studio in Long Island, Sonora Studios in Los Angeles and Electric Lady in New York City. Brothers Brian and Michael D’Addario wrote that they would begin work on an additional record “to try and make it up” to fans. The album was originally scheduled for a May 1st release. “It’s with even greater disappointment that we move our record release date to August 21st. They say good things come to those who wait, and even better things come to those who wait longer. And then they tell you not to procrastinate. What kind of sense does that make? To try and make it up to you, we’re hard at work on another record.

“In times of global turmoil, I find it comforting to recall something the late great Abraham Lincoln once said. After that, I like to take a large ice cube out from the freezer and suck on it for a couple of minutes.”

The label just announced this limited translucent red vinyl edition of “Songs For The General Public”, the third album from The Lemon Twigs, out 21st August.

Band Members:
Brian D’Addario,
Michael D’Addario

The 12-track album will also be released on standard black vinyl, while the first 100 vinyl pre-orders made through the 4AD records Store will receive a limited-edition signed print

Songhoy Blues is a band whose experiences in Mali have opened their eyes to universal problems plaguing people everywhere. Using the pain and lessons learned from having to leave their hometowns in northern Mali, the band realizes that human rights is a concept that extends far beyond what they have seen with their own eyes and far beyond just the borders of Mali. In order for the band to see their homes restored, they understand the fight must be fought on all fronts, for everybody across the spectrum. They are no longer refugees or exiles or four people with instruments—they are Songhoy Blues, a musical voice for empowerment and equality.

Working with Matt Sweeney, who encouraged the band to make the album they want to make, “Optimisme” confronts our world today. On “Badala” and “Gabi,” Songhoy Blues seeks the empowerment of women, asking for centuries-old misogynistic practices to be done away with. With “Worry,” the band advises both the young and the old that positive vibes and persistence are the best tools to fight our struggles. In “Assada,” the band praises and thanks the everyday warriors who wake up everyday to sweat for the betterment of their communities and in “Dournia,” the band laments the lack of compassion and empathy between humans today in the face of increasing materialism and selfishness. “Bon Bon” warns of being fooled by shiny promises, and in “Barre” the band asks for the youth to get involved at home for change while warning off those who wish to divide in “Fey Fey.” Each time Songhoy Blues steps to the mic on Optimisme
the band confronts, consoles, praises, thanks, and encourages the listener toward a better world tomorrow.

Sad 13 the project led by Sadie Dupuis of Speedy Ortiz, is a vampire who bakes cakes and other goodies to lure in her victims in the video for her new song “Oops…!” It’s the latest single to be taken from her new album, “Haunted Painting”, which is due out September 25th via Wax Nine. Kimber-Lee Alston wrote, directed, and edited the video remotely.

Dupuis had this to say about the song in a press release: “We recorded ‘Oops…!’ at New Monkey, which was Elliott Smith’s studio. This one has a magic drum sound—thanks entirely to engineer Sarah Tudzin (of Illuminati Hotties notoriety), and Zoë Brecher’s impeccable playing. Just before writing it, on tour with CHVRCHES, a venue employee became physically and verbally violent with one of my Speedy Ortiz bandmates. He directed his fake apology at me instead of the person he harmed, presumably because I am smaller and present feminine. My vengeance complex kicked in and I got a scary adrenaline high making sure this unsafe person was removed from the show. While I’m glad I have protective instincts, I wrote the song to process ways in which I’ve used people’s assumptions about me and my body to wield my own version of toxic masculinity. Kimber-Lee Alston, who directed remotely via Zoom, turned this story and song into an allegory about a 1950s prom queen vampire who lures in her bad boy victims with delicious, blood-filled treats.”

Previous Dupuis shared the album’s first single, “Ghost (of a Good Time),” via a video for the track, which Dupuis said is a “party song about not going out.” The album also includes “WTD?,” a new song Sad13 shared via Adult Swim Singles in May.

Haunted Painting is the sophomore Sad13 album, the follow-up to 2016’s Slugger. The album was recorded at Tiny Telephone in San Francisco and New Monkey Studio in Van Nuys, California, a studio that was built by Elliott Smith in the 2000s not long before he died. The album was made exclusively with women engineers, including mixer Sarah Tudzin (Weyes Blood, Illuminati Hotties), tracking engineers Erin Tonkon (David Bowie, Esperanza Spalding) and Maryam Qudus (Thao & The Get Down Stay Down, mxmtoon), and “mastering legend” Emily Lazar (Beck, Dolly Parton). It also features guest vocals from from Helado Negro’s Roberto Lange, Deerhoof’s Satomi Matsuzaki, Merrill Garbus of tUnE-yArDs, and Pile’s Rick Maguire. Zoë Brecher plays drums throughout the album.

Dupuis had this to say about the album in a previous press release: “I worked on Haunted Painting throughout 2019, writing, arranging and recording from home, then finishing the songs in studios around the country in between Speedy’s fly-in dates. It’s maximalist, and more true to me and my tastes than any record I’ve done.”

Both “I Wanna Destroy You” and “Near the Soft Boys” were first released on Armageddon Records in 1980.Both have been out of print for nearly 40 years. This release would combine both into one double gatefold 7″.

2020 marks the 40th anniversary of two releases from psychedelic icons The Soft Boys, their Near The Soft Boys EP and the single for their biggest hitI Wanna Destroy You. To commemorate these releases, Yep Roc reissue these ultra-rare releases as a limited edition gatefold double 45. Both titles have never been reissued and fetch tidy sums in collector’s circles. I Wanna Destroy You has become an anthem in today’s political climate and features the rare disco version of I’m an Old Pervert on it’s b-side. Near The Soft Boys features two Robyn Hitchcock-penned originals – Kingdom of Love andStrange – as well as a cover of Syd Barrett’s Vegetable Man.
