For Lindsay Jordan, this “record” would be the songs she wrote at fifteen that lend themselves to 2016’s Habit, her breakthrough EP. Written and recorded in her childhood home in the suburbs of Baltimore, its songs—introspective, sonic documentations of that overwhelming period of change when you sit on the cusp of adulthood—reminded audiences of the infinite, complex emotions adolescent kids experience. Coupled with her prodigious guitar talent and deadpan delivery, Habit unexpectedly made Jordan an indie darling who often evoked critical comparisons to her hero Liz Phair.

With the release of her first full-length, Lush, Jordan takes her music a step forward. In the two years since Habit, she’s come out as gay, graduated high school, and signed to Matador Records. Lush reflects both the realizations and the confusions that come with growing up, deftly straddling the line between youthful vulnerability and adult self-assuredness.

If her emotional candor makes her appear far older than she is (before interviews, she sends a list of frequently asked questions to avoid, like the tired “What’s it like being a woman in a band?”), as soon as she speaks, Jordan reminds you that she’s just nineteen years old. Excitement courses through her rapid, breathless, “like”-peppered sentences. She’s still figuring this all out, a little overwhelmed at the attention she’s received so quickly. If Lush is any indication, though, she’s heading in the right direction. Jordan spoke with us about artistic growth, vulnerability, and both the difficulty and importance of keeping in touch with the person she used to be.

Mothers are to release their second album titled “Render Another Ugly Method”, their first for new home ANTI-Records. On top of that great news, the Athens band, now based out of Philadelphia, have also shared the first taste of that record, in the shape of new track, Blame Kit.

The next step for Mothers, and their chief songwriter Kristine Leschper, was, for anyone who’s seen their live show, always going to be an intriguing leap. While WYWALDYAT was a sprawling, emotional, sometimes muted affair, live Mothers became a sprawling, angular, maths-rock power-house. Even expecting something different though, Blame Kit still feels like a fresh new direction; the vocal production of the sprightly intro initially had us wondering if this was even the same band, it was only in the bass-heavy break-down one minute in as, Kristine sings, “not the first time I’ve seen it, I watched her body expand a hundred times its size to contain it”, that the hair-raising vocal tone meant this could be no other band.

Lyrically the track aims to explore the idea of the titular Blame Kit, “a social mechanism that aims to shift or imply guilt onto a particular person, group, or idea”, the track was inspired by a case study Kristine read on children with Autism and Schizophrenia, as she explains, “‘his body will at one moment expand to contain things and events that are outside of it, and at the next shrink to near-nothingness…Uncertain of the boundaries of his body, things on the outside become terribly important.’ I couldn’t stop thinking about that.” The return of one of the most important, intriguing bands in the world, embrace this progress, this brave new musical world.

“Blame Kit” by Mothers from the album ‘Render Another Ugly Method,‘ available September 7th via ANTI- Records.

Tomberlin is the project of Sarah Beth Tomberlin. Her debut album, “At Weddings”, is due out August 10th via Saddle Creek Records. another song from the album, “Seventeen,” via its video. Zach Xanders directed the video, which features the singer driving around a small town and hanging out in the country and at a graveyard.

Tomberlin was born in Jacksonville, Florida, but is now based in Louisville, Kentucky. She grew up in a very religious household, the daughter of a Baptist pastor, and was home schooled until the age of 16, after which she went to college at a private Christian school she only half-jokingly describes in a press release as a “cult.” At 17 she dropped out of school, returned home, and started to question her faith and her place in the world. It was around this time she began writing the songs that would end up on At Weddings.

“I was working, going to school, and experiencing heavy isolation,” Tomberlin says of the period in a press release. “It felt monotonous, like endless nothingness. It was a means to get through to the next step of life.”

By the time she was 20 she had written enough songs for an album. The press release says At Weddings“documents the unlearning of her childhood faith” but was still heavily influenced by church music and hymns.

UK Singer songwriter who now calls Nashville home, Lucie Silvas arrived on the Music City scene in 2015 with the release of her third albumLetters To Ghosts, a record that showcased her powerhouse vocals and earned her opening slots for Chris Stapleton and Miranda Lambert.

Three years later, Silvas is plotting her return with the release of E.G.O., an album she recorded at Nashville’s Battle Tapes studio. It features contributions from Ian Fitchuk and Daniel Tashian (who produced Kacey Musgraves’ latest), as well as guest turns from Natalie Hemby, Ruston Kelly, Gabe Simon, JD McPherson and Silvas’ husband, John Osborne.

Below, you can sample the album with latest single “First Rate Heartbreak,” a tune the singer wrote with Music Row stalwart Jeremy Spillman. Of the track, Silvas says: “I know this girl too well, and her want for something fiery and unpredictable. Drama is something we all get sucked into sometimes, and even feed off it. ‘First Rate Heartbreak’ is that craving of the highest highs even if it brings the lowest lows.“

Aaron Lee Tasjan is set to release his new album Karma For Cheap on August 31st via New West Records. This will be Tasjan’s second solo venture and signals a different sound for the artist, a change he described  as “… a little more rough and ready, more raw than anything I’ve done before.”

The 31-year-old from New Albany, Ohio has already enjoyed a varied music career, having played with Semi Precious Weapons and the New York Dolls, in addition to his work as a solo artist.

Of the new record, Tasjan says: “I needed this album to have a sense of adventure and mystery, to feel a little shaky and dangerous at times — something that wasn’t the obvious choice in terms of what people already like about what I do.  I’ve come to realize that I’m a searcher, which means I’m going to be searching forever.”

Tasjan says the new project is influenced by his childhood favorites the Beatles, David Bowie, and Badfinger, to name a few.

Stella Donnelly –  Thrush Metal EP

The Thrush Metal EP originally came out last year, self-released by the artist on tape and digitally. Stella Donnelly quickly became one of Australia’s buzziest young singer-songwriters and now Secretly Canadian release the EP on Vinyl. Boys Will Be Boys is the standout track. Atop delicate, singsongy acoustic fingerpicking, Donnelly confronts a man who raped her friend and takes to task the accompanying victim-blaming. “Why was she all alone? / Wearing her shirt that low / And they said boys will be boys / Deaf to the word no,” she coos in the chorus, a slight vibrato flaring up at the corners of her lovely voice.

Warmduscher

 Warmduscher. – Whale City

The second album from Warmduscher. South London recidivists Warmduscher include members of Paranoid London, Fat White Family and Childhood. There is power in repetition. Longtime Warmduscher biographer Dr Alan Goldfarb describes Whale City as “a rock opera so vast in magnitude that – were in not for my being strapped naked to a chair in a garage – could send a man hurtling towards the outer perimeters of uncharted space.” It’s difficult to argue with. The characters that inhabit Whale City are, as the title suggests, larger than most aquatic life forms. A cast of millions. Pretty Lilly, Whale Jimmy, Uncle Sleepover, Ice Cream Keith, Disco Minny. The people you walk by late at night with bottles in their hands and money in their pockets. The woman with bright red lipstick and straight razor smiles. Thrill seekers to a person. Powerful. Intoxicated. Intoxicating. In the words of Clams Baker, Whale City is “a playground for the people that have stepped above and beyond their comfort zone.” What are you waiting for? If you love the repetition of the Fall, the chaos of Fat White Family and own a Pebbles or Nuggets compilations – then this a must have.

The Wave Pictures  –  Brushes with Happiness

As one of the UK’s most prolific and beloved bands, it has become expected – nay, the fans have demanded – that The Wave Pictures release several albums a year. This year, they are releasing two albums and they’re kindly letting us know well in advance, so that we can set our calendars and save our pennies in anticipation. Starting with the spontaneous, recorded in one-day, minor-key, epic masterpiece that is Brushes with Happiness in June, the trio of Jonny Helm (drums), Dave Tattersall (guitar and vocals) and Franic Rozycki (bass), will be following up with a more up-beat party album, Look Inside Your Heart in October. Brushes With Happiness sees The Wave Pictures in contemplative and expansive mood. Mellower and more reflective than last year’s rock’n’roll surf-garage-rock collaboration with Charles Watson from Slow Club, as new band The Surfing Magazines, or 2016’s blues driven Bamboo Diner in the Rain or 2015’s Billy Childish produced Great Big Flamingo Burning Moon. This album is more akin to 2016’s acoustic release A Season in Hull, which, like Brushes With Happiness, was recorded live in one room in a single January day.

The band will bring their “musical, visual, emotional sensory onslaught,” as hailed by The New York Times, to some of the most iconic venues in the USA.

Pete Yorn and Scarlett Johansson  –  Apart

Pete Yorn and Scarlett Johansson’s 5 Track EP Apart is the follow up to their critically-acclaimed 2009 album Break Up. The EP features four brand new recordings and a new version of Tomorrow, a song that originally appeared on Yorn’s last album, 2016’s ArrangingTime. Scarlett Johansson adds, “Being able to revisit this project with Pete in a totally different context but within the same creative parameters is a unique artistic opportunity for me. It is always a pleasure to sing with Pete because I think our voices and stories complement each other.”

Cream –  Live In Detroit ‘67

Cream, live at the Grande Ballroom, Detroit, MA on October 15th 1967. White-hot from two months of touring the US, Cream played this remarkable show shortly before the release of Disraeli Gears. Regarded by some as the finest live document of the trio in existence, it typifies their explosive chemistry, with some outrageous wah-wah from Clapton, thunderous bass from Jack Bruce, and virtuoso drumming from Ginger Baker. This show from Detroit’s Grande Ballroom on October 15th 1967, originally broadcast on WRIF-FM, is presented in full here, together with background notes and images.

Spacemen 3  – For All The Fucked Up Children of This World We Give You

Space Age Recordings are pleased to announce the first official limited edition vinyl release of the album For All The Fucked Children Of This World We Give You Spacemen 3 (Sonic Boom a.ka. Peter Kember (Spectrum / E.A.R.) and Jason Pierce (Spiritualized). For All the Fucked Up Children from the neo-psychedelic trio Spacemen 3 was first released as a bootleg record in 1995. The record consists of Spacemen 3’s first ever recording session from 1984. The music itself sounds like a primitive version of what the group were to become; the dominating sound of the record is a slow, droning psychedelic blues performed with sparse instrumentation. A drum set is matched with a pair of distorted electric guitars, all of which provide a swirling foundation for Jason Pierce’s vocals. The album’s liner notes replicated here are actually an early review of the band by Gary Boldie, where he contemplates the city of Rugby and finds it an odd source for this new sound, and he declares Spacemen 3 as the “all singing, all dancing answer to the problems of a grey 1985.”

Sorry  –  Showgirl

Sorry are back with a new 7”, following their previous 7” singles, Wished / Lies from last year and2 Down 2 Dance earlier in the year. The ferocious Showgirl is the third and last instalment of the band’s early singles period, produced by Frank Ocean and James Blake collaborator Sean Oakley, who also helmed the band’s 2017 debut single, Lies. Showgirl is a sordid and seedy 90’s sounding nugget with breathy and addictive vocals and spidery guitar work. Sorry just keep getting better and better.

We’re very excited to announce that our new album, Slow Air will be released on Wrecking Light on 17th August.  Watch the brand new video for the first single Black Lagoon below.

The New York-via-London duo Tessa Murray and Greg Hughes, aka Still Corners. Today the group debuts the lovely visuals for the beautifully brooding and sweeping lead single from their forthcoming LP Slow Air, out August 17th on the band’s own label Wrecking Light. The fittingly shimmery video was filmed and directed by Still Corners, as the band traversed various idyllic locales in Texas, Arizona, and California in their vintage white Mustang convertible. Tessa tells us about the new record:

“we wanted to hear beautiful guitar and drums and an otherworldliness, something almost indefinable along with a classic song writing vibe. We’re always trying to get the sound we hear inside of ourselves, so we moved fast to avoid our brains getting in the way too much. The name Slow Air evokes the feel of the album to me, steady, eerie and beautiful.”

You can pre-order Slow Air on 180 gram vinyl (download code included) or CD, along with exclusive Still Corners t-shirts here. Pre-order digitally on Bandcamp and get a copy of Black Lagoon now.

Teddywaddy is a slumbering patch of country just off the Calder Highway in northwest Victoria, now mostly farmland. It sits 90 minutes from Bendigo, where East Brunswick All Girls Choir frontman Marcus Hobbs grew up, and he knows the drive all too well from regular visits there to see his father’s family. It’s also the namesake of the Melbourne ensemble’s long-awaited second album.

That makes it a resonant backdrop for the album Teddywaddy, which encompasses both smouldering studies of isolation and open-air eruptions of catharsis. Co-produced with Anna Laverty (Courtney Barnett, The Peep Tempel), the album is etched deeply with such contrasts. For every spacious swath of majesty like ‘Rounds’ or ‘Never/Never’, there’s some punked-up exorcism like the calm-to-squall ‘DOG FM’, the nerves-fraying ‘Cicada Chirps the Chicane’ or ‘Essendon 1986’, an old song revisited and accelerated.

“I like the contrast of power and surprise in music. Something that makes your head tilt back when it hits,” reflects Hobbs, who shares the band with bassist/keyboardist Rie Nakayama, drummer Jen Sholakis and guitarist Rob Wrigley. East Brunswick All Girls Choir debuted with the 2009 mini album Dead Air, then followed it up with 2014’s Australian Music Prize-longlisted Seven Drummers.  To say it was worth the wait is an understatement: Teddywaddy is the most profound and riotous statement of the band’s career, anchored at every turn by the ragged glory of Hobbs’ eruptive singing and the piercing details of his lyrics.

The second single to be lifted from the new album from East Brunswick All Girls Choir. Out June 29th on Milk Records.

Led Zeppelin‘s soundtrack to their concert film The Song Remains The Samehas been remastered and will be reissued across multiple formats in September.

The band’s performances in July 1973, at New York’s Madison Square Garden, were recorded for the concert film, The Song Remains The Same. The soundtrack to the film, produced by Jimmy Page, was originally released in 1976. Recorded live at the conclusion of a North American tour in support of the band’s Houses of the Holy album

The release is scheduled for Sept. 7, which will mark the 50th anniversary of the first show Jimmy Page, Robert Plant, John Bonham and John Paul Jones ever played together. In addition to the Super Deluxe Boxed Set edition,

This reissue is similar to the recent reissue of their live album How The West Was Won, since the formats on offer include an expansive super deluxe edition box set that includes the remastered audio on two CDs and four vinyl LPs and a two-DVD set of The Song Remains The Samefeaturing the full theatrical version of the film plus bonus content including four performance outtakes that were not part of the original film:  Celebration Day, Over The Hills And Far Away, Misty Mountain Hop, and The Ocean. The box also includes a DVD of the entire album in Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround and PCM Stereo, a download card of all stereo audio content at 96kHz/24 bit, a 28-page book (with photos and an essay by Cameron Crowe), a replica of the Japanese program from 1977, and a print of the original album cover (as usual, the first 30,000 will be individually numbered).

9-disc super deluxe edition • Blu-ray audio • Full album 5.1 mix

As well as the big box, there’s a 4LP vinyl set, a blu-ray audio with the 5.1 mix (96kHz/24 bit) and surround mixes and a humble remastered two-CD package.

It’s worth noting that for the 4-LP set, Page made a change to the track sequence, allowing the 29-minute version of Dazed And Confused to be featured in its entirety on one side of vinyl for the first time.

The Song Remains The Same will be reissued on 7 September 2018.

Zola Jesus signed to Sacred Bones in 2008. In the seven years that followed, we released eight albums together (three LPs, two EPs, two 7”s, a CD-R, and even a DVD). We discovered her via Myspace, which was the common A&R vehicle of the early- to mid-Aughts. Nika is the sole member of Zola Jesus.

On the heels of her Conatus world tour, Nika Roza Danilova was offered an opportunity to perform at one of the most prestigious modern art museums in the world, NY’s Guggenheim. Rather than doing her standard Zola Jesus electronic set she decided she wanted to work with a classical composer who could arrange her songs for a quartet. She recruited legendary industrial pioneer JG Thirlwell (Foetus) to do the arrangements. If there is a common thread to Thirlwell’s varied musical styles, it is dramatic intensity and evocative, cinematic quality.
