Black Sabbath are celebrating the 50th anniversary of their seminal 1970 album “Paranoid” with a new vinyl box set.

Paranoid: Super Deluxe Edition will include an array of material spread across five LPs. The first is the influential original album, including such classic songs as “War Pigs,” “Iron Man” and the title track; the second LP features a rare 1974 quad mix of the album folded down to stereo. The remaining three LPs are made up of two concerts from 1970, from Montreux and Brussels, both of which are pressed on vinyl for the first time.

Sticking together after the breakup of an earlier band, guitarist Tony Iommi and drummer Bill Ward joined up with bassist Geezer Butler and vocalist Ozzy Osbourne to form a group they initially called the Polka Tulk Blues Band. Eventually settling on Black Sabbath after noticing a crowded matinee showing of the Boris Karloff movie of the same name, the group secured a minimal advance from Vertigo Records and recorded its debut album in a single day — then watched its heavy blues-influenced arrangements and dark lyrics strike an immediate chord with audiences around the world. After scoring a platinum hit with 1970’s ‘Black Sabbath’ LP, the band embarked on a decade defined as much by its success as it was by its excess; as their record sales grew, so did the members’ struggles with substance abuse, which eventually made it difficult to write, perform, or get along. But even as their personal problems loomed, Sabbath continued to release a string of bestselling, heavily influential records, including 1971’s ‘Paranoid’ and 1973’s ‘Sabbath Bloody Sabbath.’

The set also comes with a hardbound book featuring interviews with all four band members and rare photos. A classic-era band poster is also included, along with a replica of the tour book sold during the 1970-71 Paranoid tour. The collection is due for release on October. 9th and is available for pre-order now.

“Paranoid: Super Deluxe Edition“, the 5-LP set or 4-CD set will feature the album, a 1974 quadraphonic mix of it folded down to stereo and two 1970 live concerts from Montreux, Switzerland and Brussels, Belgium. A hardbound book with liner notes, interviews, rare photos, memorabilia, a poster and a replica of the tour book originally sold during the band’s touring on the album will also be included. You can pre-order the set here. PARANOID: SUPER DELUXE EDITION includes the original album, in addition to a rare 1974 Quad Mix of the album folded down to stereo, The five-LP set comes with a hardbound book with extensive liner notes featuring interviews with all four band members, rare photos, and memorabilia, a poster, as well as a replica of the tour book sold during the Paranoid tour.

Black Sabbath – whose classic lineup included singer Ozzy Osbourne, guitarist Tony Iommi, drummer Bill Ward and bassist Geezer Butler – are widely accepted as one of the most influential trailblazers of heavy metal. After announcing its arrival with its self-titled debut in early 1970, the band returned later that year with Paranoid. The album topped the U.K. chart and went on to sell more than 4 million copies in the U.S.

“Zola Jesus Live At Roadburn 2018” is Zola Jesus first ever live album. Recorded at Roadburn Festival 2018 where Zola Jesus was invited by Jakob Bannon of Converge to play at his curated day. The album was released on May 8th 2020 on all other digital channels.

Also on May 8th 2020 pre-sales will start for the double vinyl and cd version. For a June 2020 release.

Zola Jesus is the stage name of Russian American musician Nika Roza Danilova. Under the name Zola Jesus, she has released a number of genre bending EPs and albums. Her approach is a cross pollination of electronic/industrial, classical, and gothic sounds. All of it coming together as a dark and emotional artistic experience.
Jacob Bannon (Converge) about inviting Zola Jesus for his curated day at Roadburn Festival 2018.

“I first heard Nika’s work on the “Stridulum”  EP (Sacred Bones, 2010). Every aspect of the release connected with me and it soon became a daily listen. The record (and all of her work) was relatable and infectious. I’ve been an avid listener ever since. Watching her artistry grow and deepen over time has been inspiring. “Okovi”, the current release from Zola Jesus is such a powerful album. I am truly honoured to have Nika and Company at Roadburn 2018 as part of my curation.”

London quartet Honey Lung shared their second EP “Post Modern Motorcade Music” via Big Scary Monsters (American Football, Beach Slang)—the follow-up to their 2019 demos and singles collection Memory, which was among one of the best EPs of last year. “Big” is a case study in the power of subtle, blooming melodies, “Juggle” is the band’s most lo-fi cut to date and perhaps their most lyrically pensive and “Be My Friend” is the kind of bittersweet lo-fi rock to be cherished—it’s equal parts soul-stirring and charming.

Having spent three months writing in Berlin, Honey Lung have grown up a lot as a band, they now express a more introspective side that has placed their songs outside of conventional genre boundaries. Now somewhere in a visceral, dark cosmos of story telling and honest feelings. With nods to artists such as Sparklehorse, Elliott Smith and Wilco.

Ever building in sonic confidence and reputation, London four-piece Honey Lung take us through their latest EP Post Modern Motorcade Music . Taking in sweeping Americana landscapes inspired by their trip to SXSW, stopping off at the heartbreak hotel and driving the long and lonely road of longing, this EP lyrically takes the listener on a journey, as well as musically. The band have undergone some changes, and this EP emerges as a triumphant trophy of those evolutions, lsonically mature in comparison to previous releases.

‘Getting Off’

‘Getting Off’ has got a sweeping, almost American-heartland vibe to it, where intimate feelings get carried along by hazy, expansive sounds. That style of music probably took on a new resonance for us when we were in Texas for SXSW last year, and we could see for ourselves how these huge dreamy American landscapes can inspire that kind of expression. This song feels like it grew a lot out of those travels and the things we were going through at that time. ‘Getting Off’ can mean different things to different people, or in different circumstances, and this song tries to capture that changeability.

‘Be My Friend’

This was an important song to us because it was the first one we put out after a period of sorting ourselves out, going through some changes, and then eventually signing with Big Scary Monsters. We wanted to announce ourselves with something punchy but kind of fun too – as soon as you put the song on, you’re right there in the middle of it. Lyrically it tells a bit of an ironic and awkward story but there’s some angst there too, which probably reflected that the idea for the song came about when we were a bit younger, but also our recent eagerness to just back on it again.

‘Name’

You can probably tell just from listening to it that this song deals with some raw memories. There’s a hypnotic and repetitive base but it’s got a huge range of dynamics which makes it kind of adaptable – live we can make it hit hard or draw people up close and play it more intimately. It also sounds super nice acoustically, which is usually a conscious decision for us – we’re hugely inspired by bands like Wilco and Alex G who, despite all the weird sounds they experiment with, could pick out any of their songs and just play it on their own. We think all songs should have that kind of solid musical core to them that transfers across all the different ways you can play it.

‘Big’

Like all the songs on the EP, ‘Big’ has gone through a lot of evolutions and been played a few different ways over the months to see how it felt in front of an audience. Really we wanted this to be a lyrically-led song, each musical part forming part of a whole and nothing more, to let the vocals and lyrics shine through. The song comes from a place of heartbreak and longing, but also explores the growth and renewal that comes out of those experiences. When we grow up to be ‘big’ we learn a lot but we come up against new challenges and responsibilities.

‘Juggle’

The idea for this song was knocking around for ages as an angry grunge jam, but when we came back to it, we felt we’d grown out of that phase a bit and went off-kilter with the sounds, exploring synths and some different textures and Alex G style hints of weirdness. Obviously it’s a lot of fun to play live because you can play around with the noise and the mess to your advantage. We’re trying to show a mature and lyrical development on this EP, but you can still find the controlled chaos in places, especially on this track. Either way, the message of the song has stayed the same: the slippery slope into a darker frame of mind that can happen when you get too bored and restless.

Edmonton singer/songwriter Cayley Thomas shared her debut EP, “How Else Can I Tell You?”, earlier this year. With lush production and touches of retro pop, soul and indie rock, this five-track release is incredibly enchanting, particularly due to its timeless song writing and Thomas’ beautiful vocals. Cayley Thomas is a singer, guitarist and songwriter from Edmonton, Alberta whose natural affinity for constructing catchy melodies reveals her striking vocal range and character.

With a voice as smooth as it is strong, Cayley Thomas may just have cemented herself as a Canadian-crooner staple with the release of her latest EP, “How Else Can I Tell You?” Through this 5-song EP, Thomas filters modern story-telling through a vintage lens, reminding listeners that the human experience is both ever-evolving and timelessly relatable.

As the album begins, “Two Minds” transports listeners to the living-room where the album begins to unfold; dampened drums, cigarette smoke, dissonant guitar chords, orange floral furniture, vinyl records, bangs, dancing bass lines, and the finest scotch. This album lives a couple houses down from Andy Shauf’s The Party and just further down the street from Jenn Grant’s Love, Inevitable. Even from the first track, it’s hard not to notice the exceptional production of Nik Kozub (Shout Out Out Out Out, Humans, The Wet Secrets) and Steve Chahley (U.S. Girls, FRIGS, Badge Époque, Darlene Shrugg); each sound is perfectly layered to create the vintage vibes, including humble horn lines and barely-there piano octaves. These vibes only further evolve in track two, “Midnight Hours”, which might perhaps be Thomas’ most vocally striking song as she switches up the melody and introduces new swooping harmonies near the end of the track.

Summer, sunshine, and vintage lovin’; if you aren’t yet feeling completely transported back in time, tracks three and four will be the ones to take you there. “Blue Jean Baby” pairs a familiar bass progression with modern synth sounds and guitar picking. “Sunshine” could be the track of the summer; the samba-like beat, anthemic chorus, and rock-out ending make it hard to sit still.

The album ends with what sounds to be Thomas’ most personal and painful song, “In a While”. She processes the death of a loved one, saying, “seasons keep on changing, but you remain the same, always one month short of 25”. The beautiful chords, fuzzy vocals, and simple instrumentation provide a delicate soundscape for Thomas to cherish the simple memories that warm her heart, and pose the “what-ifs” that make it hurt. Thomas has a talent many songwriters wish for—to say so much through very little. This track, and its placement as the finale, gives this entire body of work a new sense of depth, causing me to return right to track one and do it all again. With Thomas’ pain in mind, I relisten to the album with a deeper sense of respect for her intentionality, and hear new emotions, passion, grief, and candor in each song.

The Rolling Stones have released a video for “Scarlet,” the recently unearthed song they recorded in 1974 with Led Zeppelin’s Jimmy Page on guitar. Normal People actor Paul Mescal stars in the video, which was “filmed with a socially distanced shoot” at Claridge’s hotel in London.

“Scarlet” is one of three previously unreleased songs on the upcoming deluxe edition of “Goats Head Soup”, which comes out on September 4th. The set also contains a remastered edition of the 1973 album, demos, outtakes and alternate mixes from the era — plus a complete show from the Goats Head Soup tour recorded in Brussels, Belgium, on October 17th, 1973. That gig was originally released in 2011 under the title “Brussels Affair”.

The Stones recorded “Scarlet” with Jimmy Page and Traffic bassist Ric Grech in October 1974. “My recollection is we walked in at the end of a Zeppelin session,” Richards said in a statement earlier this year. “They were just leaving, and we were booked in next and I believe that Jimmy decided to stay. We weren’t actually cutting it as a track; it was basically for a demo, a demonstration, you know, just to get the feel of it, but it came out well, with a line-up like that, you know, we better use it.‘”

Prior to the pandemic, the Stones planned on playing North American stadiums this summer as part of their ongoing No Filter tour. Those shows have since been delayed indefinitely. During the downtime, the Stones performed a virtual rendition of “You Can’t Always Get What You Want” at the One World – Together at Home fundraising event. They also released “Living in a Ghost Town,” their first original song since 2012.

Bonnie’s sweet ethereal vocals sail over the polyrhythmic backgrounds created between her mandolin, percussion and vocal loops. Her imaginative lyrics tell stories of treehouses, mice, birds, flying and video games.
Described as “dreamy experimental indie folk” and compared to artists such as Bjork and Joanna Newsom, Bonniesongs is creating a unique sound in the Sydney songwriting scene.

Art-folk virtuoso Bonniesongs, aka Bonnie Stewart, released her debut album Energetic Mind in September 2019 via Small Pond and Art As Catharsis.

The album has been proclaimed as one of the top albums of 2019 by Nialler 9, Gold Flake Paint, Low End Theorists, and many more. While previously described as “dreamy experimental indie folk”, Energetic Mind sees Bonniesongs exploring heavier and darker material while also retaining the charm of her earlier releases. Bonnie explains “I think the album is a balance of this ethereal soft sound but also a lot of darker grungy undertones have crept in”.

“Energetic Mind Live” EP is a selection of special live recordings featuring all the tracks from the album. Hearing how Bonniesongs adapts these songs in a live setting shows the depth of the material and the quality of musicianship in both solo and band formations.

Energetic Mind singles ‘Coo Coo’, ‘Ice Cream’, ‘Barbara’, and ‘Frank’ have garnered international radio plays from BBC Radio 6, Triple J, FBi Radio, and RTRFM, as well as press coverage from Paste Magazine, London In Stereo, The Line of Best Fit, CLASH, Tone Deaf, Everything Is Noise, Overdrive Magazine, and a host more.

Using their time in lockdown wisely, The Menzingers have re-recorded their brilliant 2019 album “Hello Exile” and reimagined the 12 tracks for a new stripped-down record, “From Exile”.

To coincide with the announcement of the LP – which is due out on September 25th digitally, and available on vinyl from November 19th – the Philly punks have also unveiled new renditions of Strawberry Manson and High School Friend from the album, which you can check out below.

“The live music industry vanished before our eyes, and just like that we were out of work like tens of millions of others,” explains singer/guitarist Greg Barnett of how From Exile came about.

“As the weeks progressed the upcoming tours got rescheduled, then rescheduled again, then effectively cancelled. There were times when it all felt fatal. There’s no guide book on how to navigate being a working musician during a global pandemic, so we were left to make it up as we went along. We wanted to document and create in the moment, and though we couldn’t be in the same room together due to social distancing lockdowns, we got creative.”

Greg continues: “We would track the songs from our own home studios, share the files via Dropbox, and pray it all made sense when pieced back together. Initially, we planned for the album to be similar to our acoustic demo collection On The Possible Past, but we quickly found out that this batch of songs benefited from more detailed arrangements

“We rewrote, and changed keys and melodies. We blended analogue and digital instruments in ways we never had before. We dug through old lyric notebooks and added additional verses. We got our dear friend Kayleigh Goldsworthy to play violin on two songs. No idea was off limits. Hell, I even convinced the band to let me play harmonica on a song – no small feat! The recording process ran from mid-March till June, and upon completion we sent it over to our dear friend and close collaborator Will Yip to mix and master.”

Bully are one of the most exciting punk bands of the past decade. 2015’s Feels Like and 2017’s Losing didn’t necessarily reinvent anything, but its fuzzy, melodic rock songs were consistently invigorating, with Alicia Bognanno’s raspy voice packing a major punch. Bognanno is behind the boards again for her new record “Sugaregg”, but this time she’s joined by a producer for the first time, John Congleton—not the worst choice for your first co-producer! Even after just one spin, it’s clear that Bognanno hasn’t taken her foot off the punk gas pedal. Her third album and second for Sub Pop is empowering, unrelenting and utterly gripping, with a chance of raw explosiveness at any moment. Even the more subtle numbers like “What I Wanted” and “Prism” will leave a cloud of exhaust smoke and tread marks.

Bully thrives in discomfort. The disconnect between “normal,” actualized and idealized ideas of life rages through their music. The pull toward a spiritually-dead life as a milkman, emotional stasis in the face of outward turmoil, trying and failing to even understand your own mind; these spectres haunt and propel Bully’s music. On the band’s new single, “Every Tradition,” the second off of their forthcoming album, “Sugaregg” (out on August. 21st via Sub Pop Records), Bully leans into the underlying conflict of their music. With incendiary guitars and Alicia Bognanno’s sneering delivery, the band unleashes an anthem for anyone finding themselves out of step with the expectations that are placed on them

“Every Tradition” by Bully from their album “SUGAREGG” (Release Date: 21st August 2020 on Sub Pop Records)

Bully’s “Hours and Hours” is the latest standout from Sugaregg, her incredible new album.

Alicia Bognanno offers this about the song, “‘Hours and Hours’ is about my mother and I finally figuring out our relationship. She and I had a really hard time connecting growing up and at times felt like it would never happen. Over the past five years we have become best friends, she is now the very first person I call when I am at my absolute lowest and has saved my life. I realize now how similar we are and how that probably had everything to do with why we had a difficult time with each other growing up. I wish I knew sooner how much we could relate but am eternally grateful that we have figured it out now and I’m just so thankful to be on good terms, I love her dearly.”

Bully will release “Sugaregg” on August 21st, 2020 worldwide through Sub Pop Records.

Whether singing about frozen pets in the basement or frozen people in a cryogenic chamber, it’s been a minute since Chicago-based Ratboys last album, 2017’s GN.  We were graced with the teaser of a lovely follow-up four song EP, GL in the interim.  The core duo of Julia Steiner (vocals, guitar) and Dave Sagan (guitar) have been backed by a revolving door of rhythm sections to this point, but have announced permanent members in Marcus Nuccio (drums) and Sean Neumann (bass).  The cohesiveness certainly shows on their upcoming third album.  Printer’s Devil (another stumbled upon and appealingly odd title) releases via Topshelf Records on February 28th, and the opening track and first single, “Alien With A Sleep Mask On” charges hard out of the gate.

If you have a hankering for guitar-based indie rock, Sagan really lets it fly and Steiner’s agile vocals cruise ably alongside without showing any signs of cracks.  The band doesn’t hesitate to throw in some alt-country vibes or drone-drenched passages, but Steiner’s contributions always keep things buoyant.  With the new album and an extensive tour poised for the spring thaw (including SXSW dates), the upcoming Chinese Year of the Rat looks primed to be renamed the Year of the Ratboys.

The D’Addario brothers will return this Autumn with their third Lemon Twigs album, Songs For The General Public” written, recorded and produced by the D’Addario’s at their home studio in Long Island, Sonora Studios in Los Angeles and Electric Lady in New York City.

The prodigiously-talented brothers first emerged as The Lemon Twigs in 2016 with their debut LP Do Hollywood, whose show stopping melodies mined from every era of rock quickly earned fans in Elton John, Questlove, and Jack Antonoff.  Go To School, the ambitious 15-track coming-of-age opus, followed in 2018 and solidified the band’s reputation for building grand walls of sound around an audacious concept.

The D’Addario brothers return with their third Lemon Twigs album, written, recorded and produced by the D’Addarios at their home studio in Long Island, Sonora Studios in Los Angeles and Electric Lady in New York City. Brothers Brian and Michael D’Addario wrote that they would begin work on an additional record “to try and make it up” to fans. The album was originally scheduled for a May 1st release. “It’s with even greater disappointment that we move our record release date to August 21st. They say good things come to those who wait, and even better things come to those who wait longer. And then they tell you not to procrastinate. What kind of sense does that make? To try and make it up to you, we’re hard at work on another record.

“In times of global turmoil, I find it comforting to recall something the late great Abraham Lincoln once said. After that, I like to take a large ice cube out from the freezer and suck on it for a couple of minutes.”

The label just announced this limited translucent red vinyl edition of “Songs For The General Public”, the third album from The Lemon Twigs, out 21st August.

Band Members:
Brian D’Addario,
Michael D’Addario

The 12-track album will also be released on standard black vinyl, while the first 100 vinyl pre-orders made through the 4AD records Store will receive a limited-edition signed print
