After an EP and a few singles, Bentcousin are now releasing their official debut album on Team Love. The album starts with a simple narrative indie pop song about a boy and a girl, but quickly flips the script as it moves from a Postcard Records style jangle-pop number to a disco version of a Dinosaur Jr track. By mid-record we’re gone deep with a dark dance track that skips the third verse and pivots straight into rap. Another disco-ball stunner follows, only to see the band embrace some sonic guitar drones as it bows and exits the stage. It’s not the first time the Brighton, England band, fronted by twins Pat and Amelia, have created songs that mix rap with indie pop or disco with new wave. The band have always made a seemingly effortless stand on the borderlines between genres.

Other Side of the River

Dubbed “superlungs” for his raw vocal power, Terry Reid will forever be remembered as the man who declined the frontman job in Led Zeppelin , Okay, so the music here isn’t exactly new. But the latest release from the British soul shouter Terry Reid consists entirely of unissued songs, jettisoned from one of the most under-appreciated albums of all time. Back in 1973, the scratchy voiced star issued an album called “River”, which provided a daring contrast to his stentorian blues-rock declarations of the late ’60s. While cutting the original album, Reid moved from London to L.A., absorbing that locale’s folk-rock muse while elaborating it with the influence of dreamy jazz.

One high point is 1973’s River, Reid’s third album and first after escaping the clutches of producer Mickie Most (Yardbirds, Herman’s Hermits).Offering an hour of previously unreleased music, The Other Side of the River isn’t the first time the River sessions have been revisited, with a 2006 reissue adding bonus tracks to the original seven songs. Terry Reid also took inspiration from Puerto Rico (via contributions from Willie Bobo) and Brazil (aided by Gilberto Gil). The result suggested a cool amalgam of Tim Buckley, Van Morrison and John Martyn. ‘The Other Side of The River’ collects outtakes from the original ‘River,’ leading us farther into Reid’s ambitions. In one of the most adventurous tracks, “Country Brazilian Funk,” he finds an unlikely connection between Gil’s Tropicalia and David Lindley’s Americana. More than forty years later, these songs still trace the cutting edge.

Frankie and the Witch Fingers are a swift kick in the ass for garage psych. Their hooks are sharper, the production isn’t vintage for the sake of vintage, and the recorded material captures the energy of the band’s eccentric live performances perfectly. That’s exactly what they do once again on their new album, Heavy Roller.-Heavy Roller is the descendent of “Helter Skelter,” “Sweet Jane,” “The 99th Floor” (and a bunch of other echodelic Texan rockers) and even some Syd Barrett-via-Robyn Hitchcock psychedelia, especially as you get deeper into the album. Put them on opening slots for Night Beats, White Fence or the Growlers and they’d be on the road for a year.

The key thing to know about these retro psych rockers is that their hooks are snappy, their guitars and organ rebound up and down like championship ballers and you can hear many influences, past and present, with everything in their style that includes Beatles, 13th Floor Elevators, Flamin’ Groovies and Thee Oh Sees. From the big soaring “Fuzz God” to the hypnotic closing keeper “Merry Go Round,” Frankie and the Witch Fingers consistently keep things moving, interesting and memorable. If old school or new school psych rock is your thing, Heavy Roller should be added to your list to pick up!”

Special Costello reemphasizes his ineherent specialness with the Strange Beauty EP, his personal ode to Prince after his untimely death earlier this year. The tracks go everywhere we wouldn’t have it any other way since that’s what we’ve come to expect and love from the solo melancholy electronic popster.

I think Strange Beauty may have topped Music and Image as my favourite song by you guys. This 5-song EP, album, whatever you wanna call it, is absolutely excellent and worth picking up. A joyous musical experience from beginning to end. I especially love the ambiance of Staycation.

Jesse Gilmore released his debut LP Heartbreak on the indie label, Santa Rosa Records. The album was recorded in an Airstream in the wilderness of the Texas Hill Country and was produced by the legendary Shimmydisc guru, Kramer. Jesse Gilmore is an indie musician out of Texas who fuses dark psychedelic ballads of cosmic gloom with reggae, classical, electronica, folk, and the blues. A couple of weeks ago he released his debut LP, Heartbreak.

“Wow. Completely original. Sounds like a mashup of Smithsonian Folkways, early Eno, and some Alien Brothel Just Before Dawn. As supremely strange and beautiful as anything I’ve ever been involved with.” — Kramer,

Dion Nania, the leader of NYC-via-Melbourne rockers Free Time, traveled back to Australia and assembled a crew of musicians including Totally Mild’s Zachary Schneider and Terrible Truths’ Joe Alexander to help record their sophomore album “In Search Of Free Time”. Well, he seems to have found that free time he was searching for, because the record sounds nothing if not leisurely, propelled along gently by a loose but never sloppy energy. But that’s not to say there aren’t any surprises here — opener “Among The Reeds” rocks unexpectedly hard, and the nine-and-a-half minute “5th Floor” ambles along from its jangly beginnings to a sublime saxophone climax. The album officially comes out on Friday, but just dive in and let its easygoing charm and Nania’s Kurt Vile-adjacent drawl win you over now.

Holy Wave’s relaxed and psychedelic pop sound is the perfect accompaniment for most occasions, especially as a bright pick-me-up on a dull day. Sharp songwriting that rewards with numerous memorable melodies

On their third studio album, Freaks Of Nurture, the band combines elements of psych, Nuggets-era garage pop, and surf rock before slathering the whole package in the requisite coat of reverb. It’s the kind of dream that would be easy to get lost in, but there’s always a warm guitar riff to guide you out of your reverie, like a ray of sunlight shining on closed eyelids.

Freaks Of Nurture will be released via The Reverberation Appreciation Society last March . Recorded at Cacophony Recorders in Austin, the album is Holy Wave’s most sonically expansive to date. “We wanted to get heavier and louder, experiment with more songwriting styles and traditional pop elements,” the band explains. “We wanted to freely express different influences regardless of their relevance to each other.”

From Austin, Texas, the nine piece Brownout are a Latin band formed by members of Grupo Fantasma. Following up their acclaimed 2014 tribute to Black Sabbath, Brownout Presents Brown Sabbath, the band are releasing Brownout Presents Brown Sabbath, Volume II, on October 28th.

Brownout’s Greg Gonzalez said how covering Black Sabbath came to be:

The idea started out as a half-joke. We were trying to brand the different nights of our weekly residency with different themes. We did James Brown’s classic album “Black Caesar” as “Brown Cesar”, we did a b-boy night and called it “Brownout 2: Electric Boogaloo” and in the process of brainstorming we mentioned “Brown Sabbath” as a night themed on Black Sabbath’s music. It sounded good, but the more we thought about it, the more the idea stuck. I think myself and the other guitarists were all Black Sabbath fans. It just kind of comes with the territory of playing electric guitars and such. We (the string players) all grew up on the border and Black Sabbath, Ozzy, and all things metal were all hugely popular back then.
