In their first recordings released since the critically acclaimed long-player I’m Bad Now, Haligonian heroes Nap Eyes sail an autumnal wind of regret and longing. “Have You Seen the Light” exposes an inscape of illumination and revelation all too rare today. Hate begets hate, and light begets light. Too Bad?

Have you seen the light?

Do you know what it’s like
To hate things because you’re scared they’ll hate you?

“I’ve Always Known You Care” evinces the affections we do not reveal, as the fall leaves fall, with echoes of Hackamore Brick in the spindly guitar lines. Nigel ends the song with a promise for the future: “Oh yeah, you can count on me.”

Nap Eyes are a remarkably consistent band. Their 2015 debut, Whine of the Mystic, contains nine tracks of breezy, itinerant indie rock that only occasionally rambles on too long. The follow-up, 2016’s Thought Rock Fish Scale, does more or less the same thing. So the question for these Canadian crypto-jammers is: mix it up on LP3 or nah? I’m Bad Now is another reliable work of songs from Nap Eyes, with stronger melodies and more consistency across the board.

Grammy award winning singer songwriter Father John Misty announces a UK exclusive headline show, at the Grade I listed and newly renovated Piece Hall in Halifax.

Father John Misty has enjoyed much critical acclaim following the release of his award-winning third album ‘Pure Comedy’, and he brings his charismatic live show to Halifax joined by a host of special guests. Recent live appearances include a headline performance at End of the Road Festival, and sold out UK tour in late 2017. This special event will be the only headline show in the UK taking place this Summer.
Best known for his tenure fronting the Scottish pop revivalists Orange Juice as well as his international solo hit “A Girl Like You,” singer Edwyn Collins joining Misty on the bill on Saturday 26th May.

Also announced today is Frightened Rabbit, who celebrated the 10 year anniversary of the release of the seminal album ‘Midnight Organ Fight’ at the end of 2017 with three special UK shows. They will bring their clever but purposefully naïve pop music to the beautiful backdrop of Piece Hall.

Following the release of their first new work in 3 years in album ‘Microshift’, our good friends and Leeds/ Halifax based psychedelic noise rock band Hookworms will add their signature sound of euphoric catharsis to this one of a kind bill.

Completing the line-up is one of the most exciting young bands in the country right now, Halifax’s fast-rising The Orielles. Having announced details of the release of their debut album, ‘Silver Dollar Moment’ on Heavenly Recordings, their sound is tinged by their influences from 90s alternative rock bands Sonic Youth and Pixies.

This is the first event of its kind to take place at the recently reopened 66,000 sq ft open air piazza Piece Hall, following a multi-million pound transformation.

The Orielles

Halifax band The Orielles have been around the block for a little while now, they have done things the right way with countless live shows, circuiting etc. etc. But now they have finally released their debut single and we are glad they did.

‘Sugar Tastes Like Salt’ is glorious 8 minutes of sprawling, experimental, and most importantly enjoyable music. At 8 minutes you may wince, but the use of disco beat and proto punk posturing means this track keeps your feet shuffling throughout. ‘Sugar Tastes Like Salt’ feels like it belongs mid-way between an ESG demo and A Certain Ratio, with a dash of The Chameleons on the side.

Not only do they have a stellar debut track out but they also have a tour and have announced their signing to Heavenly Records – we couldn’t recommend a better label for them to belong too. Take a listen to the track below.

Following an especially successful 2015, British surf pop trio, The Orielles, are ready to bring the same romancing of ears and imagination to this year with the seriously tantalising Jobin EP. Consisting of three slices of the band’s increasingly acclaimed blend of sultry melodies, bewitching harmonies, and feverish flavours bound in lo-fi beauty, the EP beguiles and inflames the senses whilst hinting that 2016 can be just as big if not greater in the band’s emerging history as its predecessor.

The Orielles began early 2013, the result of a house party and the creative uniting of sisters Esme and Sid Hand-Halford and friend Henry Wade. It was not to be an immediate launch into active duty as the girls only began learning their instruments from that point but with inspirations coming from riot grrrl and California surf bands, the Halifax trio were soon working on songs and honing their creative exploration. Since then, well-received tracks and releases has reinforced their rising reputation as a live proposition with 2015 especially potent as The Orielles drew big doses of acclaim at festivals such as Dot To Dot, Live At Leeds, and Liverpool Sound City as well as their individual shows.

orielles art_RingMasterReviewWith a UK tour in motion and a host of other events lined up, the band is set to be as busy as ever with the strong potential of greater success and praise heading their way just taking Jobin as a cue. It opens with its title track grabbing ears with an instant bait of crisp beats from Sid and the siren-esque lure of Henry’s seductive grooves. Their winding tendrils continue to entice and vein the rhythmic potency of the song, Esme’s bassline as captivating and alluring as her magnetic vocals and the surrounding celestial harmonies. The melodic character of the song has a House Of Love hue to its tempting with a psych rock flavouring only adding to the overall richness and raw yet elegant climate of the spellbinding track.

Twin Freaks is equally as compelling as it settles into a sweltering landscape with thick shadows to its evocative tone and inventive depth. Led by the almost flirtatious stroll of bass, there is an immediate infectiousness which is keenly shared by the vines of surf rock enterprise cast by Henry and the siren-esque quality of the vocals; both resonating in ears and memory as potently as the virulent charm and touch of the song.

The EP closing Sliders is the most feisty and energetic of the three tracks with tenacious beats and a vivacious energy stoking its melodic fire and anthemic gait. There is a punk rock scent to its revelry too, a touch of eighties band the Mo-dettes joining hues reminding of bands like The Raveonettes and Throwing Muses though being organically cultured in surf rock, the song emerges as something openly distinct to The Orielles.

Robed in discord tinged melodies, equipped with vociferous guitar, and basking in soaring harmonies, Jobin is a release which truly lingers in the memory. It is the persistent bringer of great pleasure and a strong nudge to pay close attention to the continuing and enthralling emergence of The Orielles.

Special Costello reemphasizes his ineherent specialness with the Strange Beauty EP, his personal ode to Prince after his untimely death earlier this year. The tracks go everywhere we wouldn’t have it any other way since that’s what we’ve come to expect and love from the solo melancholy electronic popster.

I think Strange Beauty may have topped Music and Image as my favourite song by you guys. This 5-song EP, album, whatever you wanna call it, is absolutely excellent and worth picking up. A joyous musical experience from beginning to end. I especially love the ambiance of Staycation.

This five-piece out of Halifax, Nova Scotia formed in 2001 and has been cranking out indie rock hits ever since. Wintersleep has won one of Canada’s premier music awards, the JUNO, and will be releasing their sixth studio album, called The Great Detachment, on March 4. Having toured with the likes of Pearl Jam, Broken Social Scene, and even Paul McCartney, Wintersleep has the chops to put on a superb live show and is guaranteed not to disappoint at this year’s SXSW.

Nap Eyes “Whine Of The Mystic” An absolute joy of a record from the garage pop of ‘The Night of the First Show’ and ‘No Man Needs to Care’ via the countrified ‘Make Something’ to the circular grind of the brilliant ‘Delirium and Persecution Paranoia’. ‘Whine of the Mystic’ may in some ways appear dishevelled and scruffy, but at its heart is uplifting pop music. A cracker.

Nigel Chapman speaks much like he sings. As leader of the jangly indie band Nap Eyes, the singer-guitarist spills out his lyrics in wordy and occasional discursive heaps, exploring sociological and philosophical ideas through some sharp self-reflection.
