“I hated every single person I played with,” Lindsey Jordan I got treated pretty poorly. Everyone was nasty, everyone was alt-right. It was very frat-bro even when I was eight.”

Jordan, is the singer, guitarist and principle songwriter of Maryland indie rock trio Snail Mail, she is recalling her experiences playing on a boys’ ice hockey team. The sport is her other love besides music. It has become something of a litmus test for navigating a turbulent music industry, riddled as it is with sexism, greed and sexual misconduct . Despite no longer playing ice hockey, Jordan remains a fervent follower of the sport. She applies much of the discipline and determination learnt from her athletic years to her music career.

This resolute and precocious stance has served Jordan and her band members well. Snail Mail was formed in early 2015 off the back of an opportune moment to play a local festival. Jordan’s friend, Angie Swiecicki, from the post punk band Post Pink, was playing at Baltimore’s Unregistered Nurse. Swiecicki offered to help Jordan get a slot at the festival if she formed a band.

After quickly enlisting friends Ryan Vieira on bass and Shawn Durham on drums, Jordan just had two weeks to galvanise the group to play what was supposed to be a one-off show. She had been a guitarist since the age of five but this was her first band. “I didn’t really have any plans or desires to play anything after that,” she explains, “but then it just started going really well.”

Snail Mail played the festival alongside Priests, Sheer Mag, and Screaming Females. Washington DC punks Priests were so impressed with the band that they proposed releasing a cassette on their label, Sister Polygon.

The aptly titled Habit EP – a collection of Jordan’s bedroom songs written out of “old habit” during her high school years – was released in July 2016. The band (Brown and Russell having replaced Vieira and Durham) got to work, busying itself with gigs in DC and Baltimore.

Habit EP opener “Thinning” perfectly encapsulates the oft confused soul-searching of adolescence. A lo-fi lode of jangly, open-tuned guitars and scrubby drums sit behind Jordan’s mumblings of certain uncertainty. She darts between wanting to waste the entire year “just face down/and on my own time” and spending the rest of it asking herself “Is this who you are?” while feeling “gross” about it all anyway. One imagines that the restlessness in “Thinning” – its lyrics “hot head and dreamless sleep” – sprouts from suburban boredom. But the song’s propulsive rhythm and anthemic guitars exercise an opposing force: excitement and resolve.

This exceptional Brighton slacker indie band are led by the magnetic Dana Margolin, who blends the freewheeling romance of Wolf Alice’s Ellie Rowsell with ramshackle C86-style production and the darker, drowsier energy of PJ Harvey or Mark Lanegan. Even when they brood under a drizzly cloud, the surefire melodies can’t help but jangle

Led by the imperious Natalie Sharp, Lone Taxidermist’s 2017 album “Trifle” was a cult hit for its blend of post-punk and Peaches-style electro, along with the complete withholding of any fucks – and 2018 should see them build their reputation as the best live band you have yet to see. Imagine a fetish party in a bubble-wrap factory overseen by a pushy lollipop lady and you’re kind of getting near.

Along with Serafina Steer, Natalie Sharp aka Lone Taxidermist and Medea, created a visual spectacle taking in opera, theatrics, minimalist sounds and stage production.  In her vocal gymnastics and theatrics, Natalie’s performance could only be compared to Kate Bush. Unbelievable.

I just can’t stop listening to this album. As far as genres go it’s pretty much unclassifiable but has a glistening pop sensibility throughout. It will take you on a slippery journey

As witnessed as Medua and the subsequent irreverent world of Lone Taxidermist, Sharp’s art and expression is firmly based in the ‘performance art’ side of things and her ‘performances’ so far can be equally compared to the afore mentioned Kate Bush, as easily as they could to Gilbert and George or Sarah Lucas. However, what Sharp has done with Trifle, is manage the precarious transition into accessible ‘popular’ music, but without losing any of the ‘high art’ performance or theatrics with it.

A product of their hometown’s DIY scene, this Los Angeles trio have spent the past couple of years creating moody guitar music that draws on shoegaze, slacker-rock and post-punk. They’ve already whetted appetites for their upcoming debut album with a series of driving, dirge-like, deadpan tunes.

Los Angeles band Moaning recently toured with Sub Pop labelmates Metz, though they’re a new enough band that they’re likely being introduced to most listeners with the release of their upcoming debut album. And though they certainly have the energy and intensity to fit in comfortably alongside an aggressive, intense band like Metz, there’s a sexier, darker undercurrent of vintage post-punk in what they do that sets them apart. Throttling intensity plus sinister grooves? Sounds like Moaning has some serious potential.

The Imajinary Friends featuring founding members of The Brian Jonestown Massacre and Tipsy with appearances by Stephen Lawrie from The Telescopes (Official) Marleen Nilsson from Death And Vanilla and BJM collaborator, singer/songwriter Moogy!!!.

After over a 15 year hiatus, the Imajinary Friends are back with a new collection of sizzling electric dreams from space that pulsate with a strange, sexy, far out groove (i.e. L’Outsider, with guest vocals and lyrics by Deborrah Morgan aka Moogy.) On their eponymously self-titled 3rd LP, the Imajinary Friends tweak the frequencies and really fry all the instrumentation that is both dizzying and danceable (i.e. The Dark Sparkle or Space Trash.) The Imajinary Friends continue to experiment with sounds and rhythm on tracks like 101 Kazoos and Frangipani. This record brings the rhythms of the 70’s Krautrock scene with the dark guitars of UK Post-Punk paired with buried vocals and slurred sounds of the 90’s shoegaze movement.

The Imajinary Friends are a somewhat mysterious collective. Ever changing and evolving. The core 3 are Tim Digulla (one half of Lounge/Exotica/Electronica duo Tipsy,) Ricky Maymi (current guiterrorist & founding member of The Brian Jonestown Massacre; he also played with Mellow Drunk, Spectrum, The Wild Swans and Steve Kilbey, among many others) and Travis Threlkel (also a founding member of BJM, now, founder & creative director at Obscura Digital) For these recordings, the Imajinary Friends enlisted the following to sing vocals on several tracks: The aforementioned, Australian/French-Belgian Singer-songwriter Moogy (L’Outsider); Stephen Lawrie of The Telescopes (Hate This Party); and Marleen Nilsson of Death And Vanilla (Baby’s Bathwater)

“San Francisco’s IMAJINARY FRIENDS, mercurialpranksters of soundscape and pop, continue to turn in the unexpected with their unique brand of original and uncompromising music.

PALM – ” Pearly “

Palm’s been on our radar for a little while now, and they even landed a track on our Top Songs of 2017 , which is reason enough to be excited about what’s next for the band. But the experimental indie-math-pop group seems to be taking that sound to more interesting, and much weirder places with Rock Island, their first for Carpark Records.

Lead single “Pearly” feels a bit like Battles gone tropical, which is as fun and confusing as it sounds. But it’s to the band’s credit they make twisted time signatures sound so immediate and accessible. It seems like a promising year for oddball sounds with stuff like this at the forefront.

The new best band Australia have to offer at the moment. Snarling, exciting and totally punk. If you love Australian 70’s style proto punk n’ roll look no further. Amyl and the Sniffers are a garage punk band who sing about biffs, blowjobs and Chiko rolls. They’re proudly sporting shitty tatts and they named their band after a seedy drug that provides a brief, intense euphoria, followed by a brutal headache – which may or may not be a metaphor. With the mullets, the aggression and the unflinching embrace of Australiana, Amyl and the Sniffers have been likened to the sharpie subculture of the ‘70s – a pre-punk movement that was birthed in Melbourne and characterised by ‘sharp’ outfits and that quintessential Aussie larrikin attitude. The soundtrack to this era was Australian boogie: bands like Skyhooks, The Coloured Balls and AC/DC. AMY says she and the boys are definitely influenced by that ‘70s Aussie rock, but lyrically, she’s also intrigued by the storytelling of country singers like Dolly Parton; she likes the cheek of a Southern woman in the 1960s singing about cheating on her husband.

Every music industry type in Melbourne is falling over themselves to drop this self-described “Pub Punk Sharpie Rock” band’s name.  that buzz is set to spread nationwide. The video was shot live at Howler by Darcy Kinna, Sabine Battel

London trio Shopping have been steadily if quietly making a name for themselves on the strength of two albums of taut, agitated, yet catchy post-punk in the vein of The Raincoats, The Slits and Au Pairs (or more recent groups like Erase Errata). There’s nothing overtly moody or dramatic about what they do, which is a refreshing thing to hear amid a good solid 15 years of Unknown Pleasures worship. Early single “The Hype” is proof that their less-is-more approach is not only effective, but memorable, with rhythms and hooks that hold up well on repeat listens. We’re in an age ripe for some system-upsetting post-punk, it might as well groove too.

Shopping follows up 2015’s Why Choose with The Official Body, a play on words referencing institutional bodies of government as well as the limited selection of physical bodies that are deemed “acceptable” by the general society. It’s a fitting metaphor for a band whose stark, jagged, dance-punk sounds like a giant middle finger to the established order, and whose status as a band fronted by a queer woman of color is in itself a political stand.

The 10 tracks here are audacious, funky, and have that element of outsider-cool leftover from the heyday of influences like Delta 5, Gang of Four and ESG. Opening cut “The Hype” is lean, danceable and hi-hat heavy, the funky-fresh bass line and stuttering guitar enough to get anyone in possession of a nervous system out on the floor.

Shelflife and Opposite Number are thrilled to be releasing “Dream About You”, the new 7″ from The Fireworks. This three-song single is the follow-up to the Black and Blue EP, released this past summer. Dream About You is out April 21st on limited 7″ vinyl and digital formats.

The Black and Blue EP’s four songs marked the most rocking we had heard The Fireworks, yet still kept the catchy melodies and pop mastery we’d come to expect from them. Now, as a new year and a new release are upon us, The Fireworks have added new singer Beth Arzy to the group, following Emma Hall’s departure late last year. Beth, who one might recognize from the fantastic Trembling Blue Stars and Shelflife’s own The Luxembourg Signal, blends great melodic sensibility with a cool, nonchalant edge. And, in a heartwarming and ear-pleasing combination, Hall still contributes backing vocals to the 7″-a nice sendoff as the band enters into a new chapter of their existence.

The Dream About You 7″, much like the Switch Me On LP, was recorded and produced by David Holmes (recently worked on Unloved’s “Guilty Of Love”) at Soup Studios. The single comes and goes in a whirlwind of big choruses, irresistible melodies and a healthy dose of fuzzed-out guitar. Fans old and new of The Fireworks will be happy to hear that the band’s energy is as electric as ever, and they manage to pack quite a punch in only three songs. “We’ve Been Wasting Time” is a noisy, Jesus and Mary Chain-indebted earworm that refuses to be listened to passively. The title track’s grabbing harmonies and “Better Without You Now”‘s jangly, crisp guitars showcase the band in top form, and once these three songs are over you’ll only want to flip the record again. The band’s name seems to almost hint at the fact that the songs are here and gone in the blink of an eye; bursts of beauty that are just as ephemeral as they are powerful.

This will be Carlton Melton’s first full length release since 2015’s widely lauded “Out To Sea” double opus, itself a languid drifting of drones and psychedically enhanced riffmongering. Sure, there’s been some long EP releases since.. .Hidden Lights in 2017 (featuring the immeasurable drone sike float on “Rememory”) and Aground in 2016 (a companion, the Desert Island weather beaten psych-flow follow up to Out To Sea), now it’s time to soak up…Mind Minerals.

Mind Minerals finds Carlton Melton in fine fettle, all the songs were recorded and engineered at El Studio in San Francisco by Phil Manley on September 3rd and 4th 2016 (except ‘untimely’ – recorded at the Dome by Brian McDougall), the studio setting suits them — a logical progression from a weekend’s recording out at the Dome.

Under Manly’s watchful ear/eye, Carlton Melton have created a futurescape soundtrack..,a “3001 Space Oddyssey”. The drums are more pounding and direct than before, the constantly re-assuring bass creates a helping hand to propel you through the clouds of static and shards of electrifying guitar dazzling your horizon. Synths help soothe the sharp edges and lull you into some out of body experience whilst and orchestrated calamitous scree pulls you back…. This is a breathless, yet deep breathing album. It demands full immersion…

Searing guitar piercing the drone with relentless power, the core trio of Carlton Melton; Andy Duvall (drums/guitar), Clint Golden (bass guitar), and Rich Millman ( guitar/synth), have some alchemical bond that’s helped them create a post-rock / psychedelic / freeform organic slab of American Primitivism / space drift , this is unashamed head-music from the melting pot of Northern California.. 5 decades ago this album would have been released on the ESP Disk Label or even Apple…there would have been no helter skelter if the desert Hippies had locked onto these vibes, plug in, turn on, tune out..float free.. Carlton Melton can provide your own aural microdose to reset your Mind / Psyche!!

Andy Duvall plays juno synth on ‘the lighthouse’
