A spate of grunge classics are going to be hitting the quarter-century mark this year, and certainly one of the biggest is coming back in a big way this month.

Temple of the Dog only released one self-titled album in the spring of 1991 to relatively little fanfare. But by the end of the year, when critics started to take notice of the tidal wave of rock bands from Seattle and lighting the fuse on an eventual grunge explosion, people began to take notice.

Temple of the Dog, conceived as a tribute to the late Andrew Wood, frontman of Seattle group Mother Love Bone, featured two musicians who played in that band (rhythm guitarist Stone Gossard and bassist Jeff Ament); lead guitarist Mike McCready, from Gossard and Ament’s new band Pearl Jam (frontman Eddie Vedder also guested on the album); and Wood’s friends, singer Chris Cornell and drummer Matt Cameron, both of whom earned recognition with Soundgarden that same year. (Cameron currently is the drummer for both Soundgarden and Pearl Jam!) The album, featuring the mainstream rock hits “Hunger Strike” and “Say Hello 2 Heaven,” went Top 5 in America and sold more than a million copies. The band never toured at the time, but made sporadic appearances together in the quarter-century since Temple of the Dog album was released.

For its 25th anniversary, A&M/UMe are pulling out all the stops with a four-disc CD/DVD/Blu-ray deluxe edition, due out September 30th. Featuring  a new mix of the album by longtime Pearl Jam associate Brendan O’Brien, plus three alternate mixes from the original multitracks by Adam Kaspar

Seven demos (including unheard songs “Angel of Fire” and “Black Cat” plus five newly mixed outtakes by Adam Kaspar
A DVD featuring many of the band’s most notable performances, including a “rehearsal” show at Seattle’s Off Ramp Cafe, while the album was being recorded; the “Hunger Strike” music video; fan-shot footage of the band’s reunion at the PJ20 festival in 2011 (combined with professional audio of the show) and Seattle’s Benaroya Hall in 2015
A Blu-ray featuring a 5.1 surround mix by Kaspar, who mixed Soundgarden’s Superunknown into 5.1; the “Hunger Strike” video in 5.1; plus HD stereo versions of O’Brien’s mix and select HD bonus video

This set will be marked by the band’s first real tour, a sold-out affair across five cities in November. Double-disc, CD and vinyl editions are available, too.

Last July, Bat For Lashes released the album The Bride, sensing / anticipating the tragedy about to come Dear Natasha, this album is a conceptual masterpiece. One of my favourites ever. It was a concept album written from the perspective of a woman whose fiancé dies in a car crash on the way to their wedding, and today, the British chanteuse has shared the video for the devastating ballad “Joe’s Dream.” The clip sees Natasha Khan strumming on an electric guitar in front of a church pulpit, while lights grow dim around her as she sings of the tragedy to come (“But what does it mean/The bad things that I’ve seen?”).

Ahead of the release of their much-anticipated box set The Early Years 1965 – 1972, Pink Floyd have shared a video for “Grantchester Meadows,” a fingerpicked ode to the English countryside as penned by Roger Waters for the 1969 album Ummagummaa. Pairing old performance footage with contemporary pastoral scenes, the picturesque visual is the definition of bucolic bliss, not to mention the most perfect start to a misty morning.

This special group performance, taped for the BBC, with acoustic guitars and vocals from Roger Waters and David Gilmour, plus additional piano from Richard Wright and taped songbirds, successfully evokes a summer’s day in Grantchester, a small village close to Cambridge, England. Grantchester’s famous former residents include the Edwardian poet Rupert Brooke, who moved there and subsequently wrote a poem of homesickness entitled ‘The Old Vicarage, Grantchester’. Taken from ‘The Early Years 1965 – 1972’.

Originally released in August of 2001, the double-LP reissue will mark Getaway’s first appearance on vinyl and it includes an 18-song bonus CD that compiles the hard-to-find, tour-only releases of Syd’s Pink Wiring System and Slush Fund. A double-CD version includes the full album plus the bonus disc.

There is a live version of the pulsing, soaring “Stars” along with a couple of other Getaway songs and The Clean classics like “Fish,” “Side On,” “Quickstep,” and “Point That Thing Somewhere Else” appears on the rare 2003 album Syd’s Pink Wiring System. That record will be included with the Getaway reissue, along with the more experimental, piano-driven EP Slush Fund from the same era.

These bonus tracks reinforce the idea of the Getaway-era Clean as especially plugged in, generating inspired and beautiful music almost on instinct.

Indeed, they’ve done justice to Getaway, It was a key album in The Clean discography ,a record that honors the band’s origins as garage-rock-loving New Zealand kids, excited just by the hum of a good, cheap amplifier. Songs like the twangy, easygoing “Crazy,” the jaunty acoustic snippet “Cell Block No. 5,” and the trance-inducing “Circle Canyon” are more fine examples of Robert Scott and the Kilgour brothers’ interest in immediacy and a strong vibe, applied to catchy melodies.

Due On December 2nd, the deluxe version of 2001’s Getaway in honor of the album’s 15th anniversary.

Fleetwood Mac‘s last No. 1 album, 1982’s Mirage, will be released as a three-disc expanded deluxe edition this week.
Mirage – which followed 1979’s Tusk, an expensive LP that didn’t reach nearly the same heights as its predecessor, the blockbuster Rumours – but included three Top 40 singles: “Hold Me,” which hit No. 4, “Gypsy” and “Love in Store.”
The new reissue, will include a new remaster of the original album; a disc of B-sides, outtakes and sessions; and 13 songs from the 1982 tour in support of the album. You can see the entire track listing below.
Like the recent deluxe reissues of Rumours and Tusk, the beefed-up Mirage will be available in a number of configurations, including the three-disc edition that will also include an LP and DVD, which features a 5.1 surround mix; a two-disc expanded version that omits the live CD; and remastered albums on disc and digital.
The album was recorded as a reaction of sorts to the ambitious Tusk, settling for more stripped-down arrangements. It paid off for the band, staying at No. 1 for five weeks whereas Tusk stalled at No. 4. Among the 19 tracks found on the reissue’s second disc are early versions and alternate takes of songs like “Love in Store,” “Only Over You” and “Oh Diane.” The “Video Version” of “Gypsy,” which runs a minute longer than the album take, is also included.

But the real excitement is relegated to the pricey “deluxe” package that includes not only a 5.1 surround audio-only DVD of the album and a remastered vinyl reproduction, but a live show from the ‘82 Mirage tour. This 74-minute concert catches the band on a particularly inspired and improvisation filled night in LA as Mirage was ensconced atop the Billboard charts. It kicks off with a propulsive seven-minute “The Chain” that smokes the studio take into oblivion and features extended performances of two Tusk tracks with a nearly 10-minute “Not That Funny” along with another 8 minutes of “Sisters of the Moon,” closing with an unplugged emotional “Songbird” all in front of a clearly engaged audience.
The live disc, in addition to several Mirage tracks, includes older favorites like “The Chain,” “Rhiannon” and “Go Your Own Way.”

Having failed to include the already available 5.1 mix of Fleetwood Mac‘s Rumours in their 2013 super deluxe edition Warners haven’t made the same mistake with last year’s Tusk box or the forthcoming Mirage set which was announced this week…
The Mirage box looks like a satisfying package • Despite all the content (outtakes, live, etc.) the Mirage box fails to include the seven-inch of Gypsy,

• The DVD looks to be an audio-only affair. Why not include the videos to Hold Me and Gypsy? It’s perfectly feasible to mix a 5.1 mix with video content.

• And why is it a DVD and not a blu-ray audio? Warners have used the format for Van Morrison and Crosby Stills Nash & Young so why not Fleetwood Mac? Presumably, the label would argue that the widespread appeal of the band isn’t aligned with blu-ray audio which might be considered ‘niche’ and of interest largely to super-fans and audiophiles. Maybe, but having gone to the effort of creating a 5.1 mix, why wouldn’t you want to show it off at it’s best, with lossless surround sound?

The biggest sin is to continue to bundle vinyl into the super deluxe box. Vinyl, like blu-ray audio is niche, but that hasn’t stopped it being included. For many people the vinyl will be superfluous.

On a recent summer afternoon, the gothic folk bard Marissa Nadler found herself discussing the finer points of the apocalypse inside of a Wawa somewhere in Virginia. She and her band were southbound, en route to North Carolina. You could feel the July heat crackling through the phone behind Nadler’s voice, a bit worn but holding on strong (thanks to Throat Coat tea and a daily regimen of vocal warm-up exercises).

Marissa Nadler, who’s been forging devastating, deliriously beautiful tunes for over 10 years, notes that this is the first time in a long time she’s toured with a full band, as opposed to performing solo. “Our last record, July, was really the pinnacle of a certain style of music and songwriting, and I wanted to challenge myself to break through the sound that I’d created for myself,” she says. “And you know, I wanted to also not stand up onstage alone and tour alone anymore.” It’s also her first time playing lead guitar and shredding onstage, something she says is a highlight of every night.

On her latest album, the dreary and ephemeral Strangers, Nadler circles the fleeting nature of life and its unexpected discontents, including the dissolution and rebuilding of friendships. “So many fair-weathered friends / problem is when the weather ends,” she croons on the swelling “Katie I Know.” While she’s adept at exploring harsh realities in her music, Marissa Nadler is also a dreamer, of sorts. Just not exactly when you’d expect. “I daydream a lot, though I wish I remembered my dreams,” she says. “But I think life is full of enough horrifying details.”

Today, Nadler is premiering the stunning track “The Best You Ever Had” with CLRVYNT. The song is a cut from her forthcoming Bury Your Name (out September 23rd on Sacred Bones Records ) its a collection of Strangers-era songs originally limited to a cassette release. Check out the song, our conversation and tour dates below.

Speaking of solitary songs, there is a  cover you do of Black Sabbath’s “Solitude” on this album .
I really like that one. It’s my favorite cover I’ve ever done, by far, because I recorded it myself. It’s the first time I played lead guitar on anything. at home we were listening to that record a lot. And every time we listened to that song, I thought, “Ah, this is so pretty. I’d love to do a cover of it.” It was just a really natural fit. The melody is so pretty. Obviously, I tend to favor the downtempo songs, I think. It’s kind of a ballad and very beautiful.

Ulrika Spacek take on The Velvet Underground’s ‘Lady Godiva’s Operation’

Not content with morphing their own sound into unimaginable shapes, Ulrika Spacek are now turning their attention to other people’s works. For the b-side to their new ‘Everything: All The Time’ single, it’s The Velvet Underground who’ve been subjected to their hypnotism.

Today Ulrika Spacek release the first new music since their debut record, The Album Paranoia, came out earlier this year. Issued as a limited edition 7”, the self-recorded and produced ‘Everything: All The Time’ takes the template forged on said debut album, but somehow adds more fuzz and chainsaw guitars. The 7” will also feature a cover of the Velvet Underground’s ‘Lady Godiva’s Operation’ on the B-side.

Taking on ‘Lady Godiva’s Operation’ from Lou Reed’s band’s ‘White Light/White Heat’ LP, they add swathes of sludgy atmospherics to the track, pulling it into Ulrika Spacek’s mind-bending alternate world – one that was perfectly exhibited on the recent debut release  ‘The Album Paranoia’.

http://

“We have always loved ‘White Light/White Heat’ and would certainly say it’s a big influence on us,” explain the band. ”The bassline has always wrapped around our heads and it has been something we have jammed with from time to time. Lyrically the song is so playful, depicting a botched sex change of mythical Godiva. It has a lot of black humour in the song which we liked. When we decided to do a 7” we were really into the idea of doing a cover for the b-side. Covering other people’s work really drags you in directions you may not usually experiment with. It provides a really cool cross reference between the music you make and other music you love.”

Get stuck into Ulrika Spacek’s alternate take on ‘Lady Godiva’s Operation’ below – they embark on a massive tour tomorrow, dates for which are below the player. The ‘Everything: All The Time’ 7” is out today on Tough Love Records.

Tancred, aka New England resident Jess Abbott, released their third, and finest album to date, earlier this year and will shortly be heading over to this side of the Atlantic to promote it. To whet appetites ahead of that tour check out these videoclips, Tancred have this week shared a new video to new single, Pens. The video is an homage to horror movies, featuring the seemingly omnipresent Sadie Dupuis of Speedy Ortiz; discussing the idea behind the video Jess notes, “I wanted evil to seem really seductive and just take me with it. But evil is still evil no matter how sexy it is so I still needed to die at the end.”

Putting aside the video, Pens is primarily just a rollickingly good pop song. It opens with a muted strum of electric guitar, Jess’ vocal sways into earshot as rolling toms beat a primal rhythm behind her. Like so many songwriters at the moment, Jess’ music transports the listener back to the alt-rock world of the late 1990’s, but Jess injects it with enough fresh melodic hits and lyrical ideas to lift it way above a pastiche. Jess has suggested that the album Out Of The Garden is a record about, “doing what you want, what you need, without letting anything or anyone stop you – and smiling while you do it.” Fine advice, and if everyone else sounds this good following it, then all the better.

Out Of The Garden is out now via Polyvinyl Records. Tancred tours the UK in November,

Billy Bragg and Joe Henry
Shine A Light – Field Recordings from the Great American Railroad
The new Billy Bragg and Joe Henry album ‘Shine A Light: Field Recordings From The Great American Railroad’ on Cooking Vinyl. In March 2016 Billy Bragg and Joe Henry, guitars in hand, boarded a Los Angeles-bound train at Chicago’s Union Station looking to reconnect with the culture of American railroad travel and the music it inspired. Winding along 2,728 miles of track over four days, the pair recorded classic railroad songs in waiting rooms and at trackside while the train paused to pick up passengers.

Bruce Springsteen  –  Chapter and Verse

‘Chapter and Verse’ is the audio companion to Bruce Springsteen’s autobiography, ‘Born to Run’. Five of the album’s 18 tracks are previously unreleased. Springsteen selected the songs on ‘Chapter and Verse’ to reflect the themes and sections of ‘Born to Run.’ The compilation begins with two tracks from The Castiles, featuring a teenage Springsteen on guitar and vocals, and ends with the title track from 2012’s ‘Wrecking Ball.’ The collected songs trace Springsteen’s musical history from its earliest days, telling a story that parallels the one in the book. 2LP – Double LP Set

The Big Moon – Silent Movie Susie
Limited 7″ vinyl. It has been an exciting introductory year for Juliette, Fern, Soph and Celia of The Big Moon. Making riotous guitars and stadium-ready choruses look like the most effortless thing on earth, The Big Moon are creating no shortage of buzz. With each new release, they continue to reach brand new heights. ‘Silent Movie Susie’ is their most obvious pop nugget – it oozes summer fun, style and a big hook of a chorus. Think a mix of the Pretenders and Elastica.

Warpaint -Heads Up

Warpaint are back with their third album! ‘Heads Up’ was recorded after Warpaint spent 2015 apart working on solo projects, including Jennylee’s recently released album ‘Right On!’. Emily, Theresa, Jenny and Stella then reunited in January this year with producer Jacob Bercovici, with whom they had worked on their much loved debut EP ‘Exquisite Corpse’. ‘Heads Up’ was recorded at House on The Hill studio in downtown LA, their home studios and Papap’s Palace.2LP – Double Black Vinyl with Download.LP+ Limited Pink and Black Vinyl with Download.

Billie Marten – Writing of Blues and Yellows
Titled ‘Writing of Blues and Yellows’, the 17 year old’s first full-length is released via Chess Club / RCA. The songs on ‘Writing of Blues and Yellows’ are as remarkable for their beguiling beauty as for the age of their singer. All are at once intimate and airy, like secrets blown in on a breeze. All have enchanting lyrics that linger long after they have left Billie’s lips. All showcase a voice so perfectly pure it sounds almost otherworldly. The painted cover art sets the tone for the Brit’s collection of whimsical, timeless tunes with its faded, vintage look. Like Billie’s music, it couldn’t be less on-trend or modern. Which is why it stands out. The teenager’s recent releases make the cut as well as new single ‘Lionhearted’ and a couple of old favourites (‘Bird’ and ‘Heavy Weather’). For fans of Laura Marling, Joanne Newsom and Kate Bush.
CD – 13 Track Standard CD.
CD+ – 18 Track Deluxe CD featuring extra demos, alt versions and more.

LVL UP – Return to Love
‘Hidden Driver,’ the opening track of LVL UP’s third album and Sub Pop debut ‘Return to Love’, never stops moving. What starts with unassuming guitars and vocals adds new lines, depths, and intensity, until its unrestrained, triumphant finish. “God is peeking, softly speaking,” repeats the chorus, working through the relationship between spirituality and creative inspiration, and introducing a band that is always pushing further. LVL UP was formed in 2011 at SUNY Purchase as a recording project between Caridi, Benton, and their friend Ben Smith, with the original intention of releasing a split cassette with Corbo’s then-solo material. They instead released that album, Space Brothers, as one band, and Rutkin joined shortly afterwards for the group’s first show. Smith left the band for personal reasons just before the release of second album Hoodwink’d, a joint release on Caridi and Benton’s label Double Double Whammy and Exploding in Sound. DDW also put out records from other artists in the tight-knit community that launched the band.

Following last year’s deluxe edition of ‘Tusk’, Fleetwood Mac continues chronologically with the deluxe edition of ‘Mirage’. This new edition expands on the original album with newly remastered sound, a selection of rare and unreleased recordings, as well as the stories and pictures behind the album.CD – 12 Track Remastered.2CD – Double CD in Digipack with an extra 19 Track CD of B-Sides, Outtakes and Sessions.Heavy – Three CDs, DVD and LP.
