New song ‘Lord Luck’ taken from forthcoming E.P ‘Suggestive Listening’:

Ulrika Spacek have always been strong believers in a long play format when it comes to making records, but for this new release they decided it was time to explore the ‘extended play’ format. The Suggestive Listening EP will be released on April 21st as part of this year’s Record Store Day.

The band started working on the new record in January 2017, “in that empty space when you’re waiting for your last record to come out”. Recording began at KEN, their shared house – a former art gallery so named because of a cryptic inscription found above the front door. Not just a studio and home, KEN is essentially the band’s hub, a space in which the surrounding ephemera of videos, artwork and even band photos are all created. After this, work for the EP moved to France where the band explored recording live for the first time and here the band worked with now-full-time member, Syd Kemp.

In an act of self-awareness, Ulrika Spacek chose to make something that killed the ‘three-part interweaving guitar’ characteristic that partly defined Modern English Decoration. The intention was to deconstruct the standard three guitar, bass and drums line-up used on the first two albums, aiming to strip back the overall sound whilst simultaneously bringing certain elements to the foreground. Very few guitar effects pedals are present on the record, and a different computer was deliberately used in order to steer away from the plug-ins employed on previous albums.

Lyrically this release came out of a time of common late 20’s existentialism, a time of huge self doubt and questioning in many aspects of our lives”. In contrast to the generally veiled form of lyrical expression on the band’s first two records, Suggestive Listening displays an interest in ‘literalism’, “In a time where we were struggling to find clarity we wanted our music to express the opposite”. This is also reflected in the choice of artwork for the release, which not only bears the record’s lyrics, but also song lengths and the very definition of an E.P itself. Additionally, fans may note that there are two different coloured front covers, one pink, one blue, each limited to 500 copies.

This change in approach was foreshadowed around the release of Modern English Decoration, when they claimed that, “We won’t return to this sound again. Though as fanatical fans of music, we feel the beauty lies in how these different offshoots go on to inform our future records”. As such, Suggestive Listening, might be continued an evolution more than a wholesale shift in focus.

In preperation of its release, Oysterland, a night curated by Ulrika Spacek, will take place the night before at Doomed Gallery in London. The E.P will be played back-to-back in exhibit form, with the layers of instrumentation played on separate speakers. Audience members are invited to make their way around the gallery allowing a personal and unique listening experience. Speakers will be positioned inwards so that audience members can either walk through the musical layers of the E.P or position themselves in the middle of the room where all parts come together.

Limited to 1000 copies – 500 blue cover, 500 pink – and only available through independent record shops.  An extended play record, offered referred to as an EP, is a musical recording that contains more tracks than a single, but is usually unqualified as an album or LP. EPs usually do not contain as many tracks as albums, & are considered “less expensive & time consuming” for an artist to produce than an album.

An EP originally referred to specific types of vinyl records other than 78 rpm standard play (SP) & LP, but it is now applied to mid-length CDs and downloads as well. Beginning in the 1980s, many so called “singles” have been sold in formats with more than two tracks. Because of this, the definition of an EP is not determined only by the number of tracks or the playing time; an EP is typically seen as four (or more) tracks of equal importance as opposed to a four-track single with an obvious A side & three B-sides. Ulrika Spacek released their second album, Modern English Decoration. Much like their debut album released in early 2016, the band chose to record, produce and mix the entirety of the record in their shared house – a former art gallery called ‘KEN’, so named because of a cryptic inscription found above the front door. The relatively short amount of time between their first and second albums is testament to the band’s self-contained creative environment and the productivity it encourages. There’s a tendency to label this degree of self-reliant creativity ‘DIY’ – and the band do certainly feel emboldened by that ethos – yet to consider Modern English Decoration solely in these terms is a disservice.

Their craft is considered and purposeful, the means of its production reflecting the band’s overall vision  “We enjoy listening to music through the album format and want our records to reflect that”, says Rhys Edwards (guitars, vocals, synthesiser). Ulrika Spacek formed in Berlin in one night, when 14-year-long friends Rhys Edwards and Rhys Williams conceptualised ‘Ulrika Spacek’ and came up with The Album Paranoia as their debut album title. Moving back to London with the intention to record it, they were joined by Joseph Stone (guitars, organ, synths, violin), Ben White (bass) and Callum Brown (drums, percussion), ossifying into the five-piece they are now.

The album was released soon after with little forewarning and was accompanied by a year long, near-monthly club night called Oysterland. Given the lyrics often favour abstraction and the vocals can be more impressionistic than declarative, the album title itself offers perhaps the most telling entry point to the record. With three guitarists in the band guitars were always going to be central to the music, but what is less expected is the dynamic interplay between the trio that suggests a three-headed version of the Verlaine-Lloyd axis at the heart of Television. What’s more, the absence of reverb is integral, in part attributable to the ambience of the studio, but also a conscious decision in order to add focus. And focus is the abiding term: this is an album designed to be just so – a 45 minute commitment, a surrender.

London-based Ulrika Spacek released their new record on June 2nd via the good people of Tough Love Records.  Ulrika Spacek’s sound is dominated by their three guitarists. On a song like the slowly chugging “Dead Museum,” the densely enmeshed riffs and drones of this Reading five piece recall the kind of blissful noise summoned up by The Band of Susans or mid period Sonic Youth.  But there’s also something of Deerhunter about the band’s gauzy but winsome vocal melodies.  The album’s highlight is probably “Victorian Acid,” with its tense central melody drowning in waves of overdriven distortion. The hilariously titled “Protestant Work Slump” closes the album in a brighter mood, with a distinct gleam of Big Star.

“Full of Men” is a giant slab of marble. As the track progresses there are moments when it seems that Ulrika Spacek are making delicate, intricate and precise etchings — and they are until they’re not. The track flutters in and out of this quite precision and their default unabashed yet operatic gashing and droning.

Ulrika Spacek are a ludicrously hip prospect thankfully, there’s plenty of substance to go with the quintet’s unwavering stylishness. It was only last year the band released their debut album, The Album Paranoia, but wasting no time this week they’ve announced the follow-up, Modern English Decoration, as well as sharing the first single from it,”Mimi Pretend”.

Mimi Pretend is the albums opening track, and should be a good indication of the album to follow, as according to frontman Rhys Edwards the band, “started with Track One on the album and went from there”. Mimi Pretend builds around glimmering, focused guitar lines and a driving rhythm section, the whole thing pitched somewhere between Ultimate Painting and Television. Layered vocals seem to drift in and out of ear-shot, the lyrics largely unintelligible but delivered with an anxious energy that gives them an undeniable gravitas. The band may have recorded much of this record in their living room, but if Mimi Pretend is anything to go by, don’t expect a relaxed concept album on domestic bliss.

Ulrika Spacek take on The Velvet Underground’s ‘Lady Godiva’s Operation’

Not content with morphing their own sound into unimaginable shapes, Ulrika Spacek are now turning their attention to other people’s works. For the b-side to their new ‘Everything: All The Time’ single, it’s The Velvet Underground who’ve been subjected to their hypnotism.

Today Ulrika Spacek release the first new music since their debut record, The Album Paranoia, came out earlier this year. Issued as a limited edition 7”, the self-recorded and produced ‘Everything: All The Time’ takes the template forged on said debut album, but somehow adds more fuzz and chainsaw guitars. The 7” will also feature a cover of the Velvet Underground’s ‘Lady Godiva’s Operation’ on the B-side.

Taking on ‘Lady Godiva’s Operation’ from Lou Reed’s band’s ‘White Light/White Heat’ LP, they add swathes of sludgy atmospherics to the track, pulling it into Ulrika Spacek’s mind-bending alternate world – one that was perfectly exhibited on the recent debut release  ‘The Album Paranoia’.

“We have always loved ‘White Light/White Heat’ and would certainly say it’s a big influence on us,” explain the band. ”The bassline has always wrapped around our heads and it has been something we have jammed with from time to time. Lyrically the song is so playful, depicting a botched sex change of mythical Godiva. It has a lot of black humour in the song which we liked. When we decided to do a 7” we were really into the idea of doing a cover for the b-side. Covering other people’s work really drags you in directions you may not usually experiment with. It provides a really cool cross reference between the music you make and other music you love.”

‘Everything: All The Time”, the lead track from a new self-recorded and produced two-track 7″single  by Ulrika Spacek. The second song is a cover of the Velvet Underground’s ‘Lady Godiva’s Operation’.

Berlin-founded, London-based British rockers Ulrika Spacek caught my attention late last year with “She’s A Cult” a single that tapped into the sound and spirit of early ’90s indie rock better than most. Since then they’ve shared their debut The Album Paranoia and now they’re back with a limited edition 7″ single, their first new music since the album.

A-side “Everything: All The Time” returns to that sound that first turned my eyes into little heart emojis. The song rides a gnarly droning lo-fi current á la Sonic Youth via Times New Viking but often smooths out into eerie calm or gorgeous clean jangle.

Released on 23rd September, it’s limited to 500 copies, 400 black and 100 red. DIIV  –  IS THE IS ARE

“There are plenty of bands that have served as their own worst enemies. DIIV had all the makings of a band banging on the door to stardom—hooks for days, a distinctive aesthetic in a crowded field, an edgy frontman who has acquired his own mythos. So the wait between their debut and sophomore efforts was an unwelcome wrinkle. After curating one of the finer entries into the Captured Tracks discography, the Brooklyn genre-melders hit a few snags, most notably Zachary Cole Smith’s arrest in late 2013 and drummer Colby Hewitt’s departure due to drug addiction. It all made a one-and-done affair seem like a real possibility. Is The Is Are’s opening line captures this sentiment perfectly: ‘You’re out of sight/And out of mind.’ DIIV were essentially off the grid for three years, more than enough time to be supplanted by a new rival. But rather than a distraction, the tabloid drama surrounding the band became the fodder for their new album. Is The Is Are takes everything that DIIV did well on Oshin, deepens it, broadens it, fiddles with more permutations, and does it all to excess.

Ulrika Spacek is a British experimental rock band formed in Berlin by Rhys Edwards and Rhys Williams, relocated to Homerton, London. Work on debut album ‘The Album Paranoia’ began in the summer of 2014 in the band’s shared house KEN, and was finished there last month. In conjunction to the making of ‘The Album Paranoia’, the band has curated a number of nights under the name ‘Oysterland’ combining their first live performances with a series of exhibitions. The band’s music has drawn various interpretations, a cross pollination of hypnotic fuzz, Verlain-Malkmus guitar idiosyncrasies and intertwining feelings of both angst and melancholia. PALEHOUND –  MOLLY

Debut UK release on Heavenly Recordings from Boston’s Palehound – the vehicle for Ellen Kempner who on ‘Molly’ shows her inimitable songwriting skills while playing it a bit fast and loose with hooks. ‘Molly’ features the same kind of seasick, pointed instrumentals of a
 song, and the caustic lyricism to match. Limited 7″ only.

THE PARROTS  –  I DID SOMETHING WRONG

The Parrots are an unstoppable garage-surf party-machine. They have been causing a stir in the scene in recent months with their bewildering shows and their already sold out ‘Weed For The Parrots’ EP (out last June on Luv Luv Luv Records and on Burger Records in the US), and after the sweaty success of their London multi-venue residency at The Shacklewell Arms, The Waiting Room and The Lock Tavern at the start of the summer (all packed in the same week, with a memorable stage invasion at The Shacklewell), The venue issue the Spanish trio on a very limited, exclusive 7″ single that also marks the launch of Shacklewell Records, a newborn imprint linked to the Dalston venue and its pop-up record shop, Black Wax. This 7″ features two early demos that are among the most celebrated tracks in their live shows – ‘I Did Something Wrong’ (with more than 90,000 plays on YouTube yet still unavailable physically) and drunken show-closing chant ‘Somebody To Love’.

Dr. Dog – The Psychedelic Swamp CD/LP+MP3 (ANTI-)
“Philly’s Dr. Dog made their first record, The Psychedelic Swamp, in 2000 but never officially released it. Sure, there’ve been bootlegs, and any long-time Dr. Dog diehard can list the LP’s songs — but the collection never got a chance to really shine. G.L.O.S.S.  –  DEMO 2015

Without a doubt, one of the most hyped punk groups of recent years, G.L.O.S.S. are different in that they deserve the column inches 10 times over.
With an acronym translating as Girls Living Outside Society’s Shit, the four piece from Olympia took the punk and hardcore world’s by storm in early 2015 with their demo of blistering, stomping, meaty and breathtaking hardcore. Sounding not unlike Japanese hardcore pioneers Bastard mixed with prime Tragedy and even some wilder Italian influences, G.L.O.S.S. approach the punk status quo from the role of self-declared outsiders. Helmed by the immensely powerful vocals of Sadie Switchblade, the politically and hyper-aware lyrical content of the group set them apart from the staid pre-occupation of a predominantly macho and male hardcore scene. It’s a testament the group’s power and compositional prowess that, on the opening spoken-raged-word intro to their first wax statement, you can’t help feeling enraged, pumped up and ready to destroy two thousand years of patriarchal culture before the first minute is out no matter your angle or political persuasion. We’ve been waiting for this for so long it already feels like the 7″ of the year.

PORCHES  –  POOL

‘Porches’ debut full-length for Domino and a major step forward for frontman Aaron Maine – as an evolving singer / songwriter, and as a nascent producer. Written and recorded almost entirely in the Manhattan apartment he shares with his partner and frequent collaborator, Greta Kline a.k.a Frankie Cosmos, ‘Pool’ is an elegantly drawn set of gorgeous synth-driven pop songs, and an expansive re-articulation of the melancholy we’ve come to expect from him; from the pristine harmonies of ‘Hour’ to the undulating R&B of ‘Underwater’ to the Auto-tuned majesty of the title track. “I feel like I naturally gravitate towards the more melancholic experiences in life,” he says, “but this time around I tried to dissect those moments and somehow extract what was so beautiful about them.” The result – recorded twice, and eventually mixed by Chris Coady (Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Grizzly Bear, Beach House, Tobias Jesso Jr.) in his Los Angeles studio – is a sophisticated and fully immersive listening experience, with Maine’s voice at its center. “I want people to feel dark, beautiful and strong when they hear this new record,” he adds, “I want them to fall in love.”​Pool marks a major step forward for Porches frontman Aaron Maine—as an evolving singer/songwriter, and as a nascent producer

SUNFLOWER BEAN  – HUMAN CEREMONY

As a band, Sunflower Bean have grown exceptionally fast. On the heels of strong live shows around their Brooklyn hometown and festivals like CMJ, the three-piece dropped an EP earlier this year. Since then, they’ve nailed down tours with the likes of Wolf Alice, DIIV, Best Coast, and others, leading to a staggering 100 performances in the span of just one year. That’s a lot for a fresh outfit. Recorded in just seven days, Human Ceremony sees them refining their psych rock ways into something with a bit more of a fuzzy pop edge, with a press release referencing influences like The Cure, The Velvet Underground, and The Feelies.”

TELEGRAM  –  OPERATOR

London four piece Telegram release their eagerly awaited debut album on Gram Gram. ‘Operator’, Recorded in London with Rory Atwell, features twelve tracks including the forthcoming single ‘Taffy Come Home’, and a new version the band’s long deleted seven-inch debut release ‘Follow’ from October 2013. I DON’T CARES (WESTERBERG AND HATFIELD) –  WILD STAB

Paul Westerberg and Juliana Hatfield are the I Don’t Cares and they don’t care.The I Don’t Cares is Westerberg’s first new music since The Replacements disbanded earlier this year – for the second time.Back in a May 2014 feature for Paste magazine, Juliana Hatfield admitted to only ever writing three fan letters to other musicians: One to the band X, one to Elliott Smith, and the first, when she was a teenager, to Paul Westerberg.
Now Hatfield and the Replacements’ singer/guitarist have apparently formed a new group, called the I Don’t Cares, and they released their first song, a jangly guitar-rock nugget called “1 / 2 2 P, at the end of 2015.The song is to be included on the I Don’t Cares’ debut album, titled Wild Stab, out on Dry Wood Music. At the very least, the album is a victory for the lost art of fan-letter writing!

THE PRETTIOTS  – FUN’S COOL

NYC’s The Prettiots (Kay Kasparhauser and Lulu Prat) release their debut album, ‘Fun’s Cool’ via Rough Trade. Packed with catchy melodies, memorable hooks and heart on the sleeve lyrics, ‘Fun’s Cool’ acts as a thoughtful, funny, and catchy-as-hell state of the union address from young women living in a big city and watching life unfurl in fits and starts before them. They’ve got a playful aesthetic and a sweet pop sound, but their observations are scalpel-sharp, and the emotional gut-punch their music packs is real. For Kay (vocals and uke) and Lulu (bass), simple instrumentation and no-frills vocals aren’t useful because they’re easy or cute.

FIELD MUSIC –  COMMONTIME

‘Commontime’ is the first album of new songs from North East siblings Peter and David Brewis since ‘Plumb’ in 2012 and their fifth album ‘proper’ since their debut in 2005. After four years threading a way through one extra-curricular project after another, the space that Field Music vacated still appears to be empty and Field Music-shaped. No one else really does what Field Music do; the interweaving vocals, the rhythmic gear changes, the slightly off-chords, but with the sensibility that keeps them within touching distance of pop music. All this is present again but things are different this time. Where ‘Plumb’ was an album of vignettes and segues, ‘Commontime’ edges towards what people might call “proper songs”. Field Music have never shown off their unashamed love of choruses quite like they do on this record.  Lyrically, Peter and David continue to mine that inexhaustible seam wondering how on earth we ended up here, in this situation, as these people. Over fourteen songs, conversations are replayed and friendships are left to drift. And all the while, that thing you were trying to remember has changed while your head was turned.
