Desperate Journalist exude cool. powerful, urgent female vocals, and sophisticated, layered guitar work, in the image of Savages, the new single “Control” previewed yesterday the new single from Londoners Desperate Journalist, whom are fast rising to become one of our favourite bands of the moment. Swooping in on a tangle of Rob Hardy’s 12 string arpeggio assault, cavernous drums and dexterous baselines, Detailing a relationship that’s seemingly turned into a literal battle of wills, Jo Bevan’s knowing vocal tone entrances and then pierces: she possesses that rare ability to play with you, to ironically dismiss(“What a fantastic growth rate/Darling, go fill up your plate”) artfully reworking phrases that in the hands of some could sound clumsy but in hers sound positively weighty, powerfully affecting and ultimately self affirming(“It’s like a hole in your head/I’m a thoroughbred”).
While the backing is sinuous and widescreen, atmospheric yet pulsing, faintly reminiscent of the ghosts 80s and 90s grandest indie sounds but never in awe of their heroes. This beauty cowers, creeps and then pounces on you when you aren’t looking, the chorus firing off boldly, vigorously and quite thrillingly with a fearsome melodic punch that is sadly lacking in most bands of today. Desperate Journalist might have been one of my tips for 2014, but their sumptuous forthcoming self titled debut album(which you can stream below) makes them firmly approved for 2015 .
This track really has the feel of the early Smiths sound, a song that will certainly stick in your head, in a good way. Their debut album is due out 26th January 2015 on Fierce Panda Records. The band are playing in Nottingham 13th December
Featured the audio once before but this is the video clip , She is Fresh on the London scene is alt-soul singer Chløë Black, who calls her style of nostalgic dark pop ‘Goth ‘n Soul’. With vocal stylings not too dissimilar to Lana Del Rey, the solemn, poignant synth arrangement of Banks, and the cross-subcultural edginess of Amy Winehouse, her debut release is an ode to the musical greats who died at the age of 27; Kurt Cobain, Amy Winehouse, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin and Jim Morrison. –
Absolutely winners for 2015 of the new bands to watch. And already counting Alex Turner as a fan, the Glaswegian trio are part bike gang, part all-seasons barfly, all pomade, shades, denim, leather and signet rings. They’ve the gritty, punk-rock ‘n roll energy of The Birthday Party through to contemporaries Slaves and Sleaford Mods.

Melding strong instrumental hooks, ambient rhythmic textures and the prominent vocal strength of front man Caleb Hodges, Art of Sleeping’s live reputation in their hometown goes before them, resulting in an admirable and devoted following of fans via online networks. Both ‘Empty Hands’ and ‘Above the Water’ sees current, go-to producer, Yanto Browning (The Medics, Tara Simmons, The Jungle Giants, The Belligerents) take the helm as a first taste of their EP release planned for release before the end of the year
Future Islands is a synthpop band based in Baltimore, Maryland, signed to the label 4AD The band is composed of Gerrit Welmers (keyboards and programming), William Cashion (bass, acoustic and electric guitars), and Samuel T. Herring (lyrics and vocals). Future Islands formed in January of 2006 in Greenville, North Carolina. this is a slowed down remix changing the feel of the song completely.

Atmosphere is Warpaint’s stock in trade. Each of their songs, no matter how intricately written, is bathed in a chilly glow. The ambiance is intoxicating. But after the effects-laden trip of their debut album The Fool, Warpaint allowed some of that hallucinatory mist to dissipate on their sophomore, self-titled album. It’s still an enchanting and beautiful piece of music, but the Los Angeles quartet hones in on some of the finer details of their melodies, be it on the intricate, folky sound of “Keep It Healthy,” the sparse and beat-driven approach of “Hi,” or the haunting synth-throbs of “Biggy.” In context, the change in the band’s sound that has occurred over the past four years has been a gradual and minimal one, but on Warpaint, a little goes a long way.
We’re always in the mood for tight, sugar-glazed indie pop around these parts, but London’s Gengahr offer something more, something more akin to sun-kissed sadness.
Formerly known as RES, Gengahr released the foot-tapping sun-kissed gem “She’s A Witch” a few months ago as a free demo, and now the band are back with two more “Haunter” and the song “Bathed In Light” the track that made more people aware of the band was the track –”Fill My Gums With Blood”. Which you can find elsewhere on my pages
Fill My Gums With Blood sees the sweet vocals with an almost funk-derived rhythm and stripped back guitars that could be all sunshine and gloss, but there’s an sadness in the underlying nature of the track that for some reason reminded my of the late, great Elliott Smith.
