On It’s Real, the group’s second album, Ex Hex’s commitment to larger-than-life riffs and unforgettable hooks remains intact, but the garage-y, post-punk approach that defined their debut album Rips has grown in scale and ambition. What started as a reaction to the blown-out aesthetic of Rips would test the sonic limits of the power trio and lead the band on a quest for a more immersive and three-dimensional sound. Vocal harmonies are layered ten tracks deep, solos shimmer and modulate atop heaving power chords, and the codas linger and stretch toward new frontiers of sound. On first listen, you might think you’ve unearthed a long-lost LP carved from the space where crunch-minded art rock and glitter-covered hard rock converge, an event horizon at the intersection of towering choruses and swaggering guitars.

Ex Hex were already one of America’s best guitar bands—but on It’s Real, their musical savvy has thrillingly combined with anything-goes curiosity, studio experimentation, and a dedication to refinement, resulting in an album that’s ready to be played at maximum volume.

KIDSMOKE – ” Passenger “

Kidsmoke is performing at SXSW 2019.

The first sound to jump out from Kidsmoke’s “Passenger” is that clear, fluid guitar line — it could have been transplanted directly from a Cure album 30 years ago, and damned if it isn’t irresistible. From there, the Welsh pop-rock band cycles through an array of sweet and sunny hooks, each more glimmery than the one before. Imagine Real Estate with a bit more pep and a bit less nostalgic melancholy, and there you have it: a summery, shined-to-a-sheen jewel that’d elicit smiles in any era.

Kidsmoke are Lance (Vocals/Guitar), James (Bass/Vocals), Sophie (Guitar/Vocals) and Ash (Drums). Their shimmering brand of dreamy indie-pop has seen them make waves in their native North Wales.

Inferno is acclaimed Australian singer-songwriter Robert Forster’s first solo album in four years – his second album over the last eleven years. Forster only makes records when he feels he has the songs – on Inferno, he has nine he totally believes in. They range from the exhilarating top ten pop of Inferno (Brisbane In Summer), the beach shack groove of Life Has Turned A Page, via ‘Remain’s 1977 New York strut, to finish in a way that this concise, brilliant, drama and wit filled album only can – on the big build epic One Bird In The Sky. Inferno was made in Berlin in 2018, during the hottest German summer in decades. Noted producer / engineer Victor Van Vugt (Beth Orton Trailer Park, P J Harvey Stories From The City, Stories From The Sea), recorded the album; the first time he and Forster had worked together since Van Vugt engineered Forster’s debut solo album classic Danger In The Past in Berlin in 1990. Inferno in its making is a perfect mix of the familiar and the new.

The Go-Betweens co-founder Robert Forster has just released his terrific new solo album, this closing song seems to double as a philosophy for life: “Eat only what I eat, breathe only what I breathe, well that’s me.” And as his “da da das” and violin fade out, you can almost imagine the credits rolling. May we all achieve such grace.

Also working with Forster again, are Brisbane based multi-instrumentalists Scott Bromley and Karin Bãumler from Songs To Play(2015), while new recruits are drummer Earl Havin (Tindersticks, Mary J. Blige) and keyboardist Michael Muhlhaus (Blumfeld, Kante). Four musicians from the corners of the world, who, with Van Vugt’s bold and beautiful production, sound like a band of the ages. In front of them, Forster delivers the best vocal performances of his career.

The legendary Pink Floyd concert at the First International Pop Festival in Rome in May 1968. This well recorded performance captures Roger Waters, Dave Gilmour, Richard Wright and Nick Mason in their very early Post-Barrett era; the time when the band was busy trying to reinvent themselves after the crucial split with genius Syd Barrett. This was even before the release of their second album, when Waters and Co. really began to extend the classic three / four minute song format towards longer and more open sound forms. A marvelous track list including seminal compositions and psychedelic manifestos such as Astronomy Domine, Set The Control for the Heart of the Sun andInterstellar Overdrive all great sparks for visionary instrumental progressions and far out improvisations. The album ends with an excerpt of Roger Water’s voice from a radio interview broadcast.

Irish post-punk outfit Fontaines D.C. recently announced the details of their highly anticipated debut album, “Dogrel” out April 12th via Partisan Records. With singles like “Too Real,” “Chequeless Reckless” and “Big,” already out there.  Fontaines D.C. make brisk, snappy post-punk with the heart of a lion. You shouldn’t write off frontman Grian Chatten’s speak-sing vocals—he packs just as much gritty ardor into his impassioned, poetic proclamations as throaty punk howlers.

Here’s the video for ‘Roy’s Tune’ from our forthcoming album ‘Dogrel’ out April 12th.

Pip Blom have shared a brand new video for their latest single ‘Daddy Issues’, directed by Edward Zorab.

“The video is a love letter to classic cinema, but also a cautionary tale,” says frontwoman Pip Blom. “Our culture makes it too easy to fall in love with things which aren’t real, and if you’re not careful you can end up in a sort of groundhog day cycle of self-induced disappointment. I think the surreal narrative of the video encapsulates that in quite a self aware way.”

‘Daddy Issues’ is the first single taken from Pip Blom’s upcoming album ‘Boat’

When one door shuts, another one opens, as the old saying goes. In the case of the break-up of the band Allo Darlin’, one door closed and four solo careers began. Paul Rains is something of a omnipresent guitar wizard on the London-scene, Mikey Collins and Bill Botting have both shared solo offerings, and now, probably the most aniticipated next move of them all comes in the shape of Elva. A collaboration between Elizabeth Morris and Ola Innset, of the Norwegian band Making Marks, Elva are set to release their debut album in April, and have this week shared the first taste of it.

It’s hard not to compare the sound back to the pairs other projects, Elizabeth’s plaintive vocals remain as wonderfully comforting as ever, while Ola’s guitar work has us digging out that excellent Making Marks record from a few years back. For everything that stays the same though, something new comes along; there’s lush strings, country-licked drum arrangements, even what sounds suspiciously like an accordion. The record’s title, “Winter Sun”, feels hugely apt for Elva’s sound, Americana via Australia and Norway, there’s a warmth and a comfort to their sound, yet you feel there’s something darker lurking beneath. We can’t wait to see where Elva take us next.

Taken from upcoming album “Winter Sun”, out on Tapete Records on April 19th!

Hot on the heels of his debut LP and follow up 7” vinyl, Fake Laugh AKA Kamran Khan delivers yet two more bangers for the kids, in the form of another double A-Side. The driving, dream-pop bop that is “Honesty” features guest vocals from Poppy Hankin of previous tour-mates Girl Ray, whilst the skittish, social commentary of “Surrounded” hurtles along set against a backdrop of razor-sharp melodies and instant-hit hooks. Both tracks are accompanied by videos due for release across January & March.

Fresh from his recent relocation from Berlin to London and in the midst of supporting The Japanese House on their US tour, Kam continues to write and perform under the Fake Laugh alias which he humbly began in 2013. With another 7″ single planned and a 2nd album on the horizon, we recommend you stay locked!

Luluc released their debut album, “Dear Hamlyn”, in 2008; the songs were written following the death of Randell’s father. Dear Hamlyn eventually gained a large group of influential admirers. Peter Blackstock co-founder of No Depression Magazine, wrote of the album, “The most beautiful album I’ve heard in ten years.” In 2011, Nick Drake’s producer, Joe Boyd, also taken by Dear Hamlyn, invited Luluc to feature in his Nick Drake tribute tour. They contributed the tracks “Things Behind the Sun” and “Fly” to the live tribute album, Way to Blue: The Songs of Nick Drake in 2013.

Luluc went on to sign with Sub Pop Records and release the critically acclaimed albums Passerby (2014) and Sculptor (2018). This edition of Dear Hamlyn is the first time it has been available on vinyl.

Just when it seems the shadow of The Beatles can’t get any longer and everything in rock has been done before, along come Sean Lennon and Les Claypool, asking the musical question: What if, instead of ducking The Beatles, you embraced the band’s tricks the galumphing marches, the sun-dazed harmonies and then made them a little weird?

South of Reality is the second album by the duo, who perform as The Claypool Lennon Delirium. As the bassist and chief prankster of Primus, Claypool has always been a bit of a mad scientist, pushing his gawky, tottering funk-metal creations to the brink of absurdity. But he’s also a secret pop fan, who says he’s spent 30 years trying, with mixed results, to write catchy hooks. In Sean Lennon (famous son of John), Claypool has a collaborator with an instantly recognizable voice, for whom this kind of candy comes naturally.

The two began working together in 2015, after Lennon’s band, The Ghost of a Saber Tooth Tiger, toured as an opening act for Primus. They released their debut in 2016, and began work on this follow-up with a week of open-ended jamming they recorded on their phones. Then, each went off and wrote songs built on those riffs.

As with The Beatles, it’s clear who the primary composer is on each tune. But Claypool says both multi-instrumentalists felt comfortable offering tweaks and suggestions during the recording. Many of the songs explore a surreal intersection — where the fitful upheavals of progressive rock collide with soaring, blissed-out refrains.
