Day Of The Dead

The National’s massive triple-disc Grateful Dead tribute album “Day Of The Dead” still keeps throwing out some classic covers. It’s took me an age to get through this album and still I keep discovering some beautiful gems. Already we’ve heard a whole pile of songs from it. the people behind the album have shared most of the tracks, and there are some heavyweights on them. For our purposes, the biggest of these is probably the version of “To Lay Me Down,” done as a funeral duet from Perfume Genius and Sharon Van Etten. Also we get to hear My Morning Jacket frontman Jim James doing “Candyman,”

‘Candyman’ by Jim James & Friends, from ‘Day of the Dead’, is a tribute album to the Grateful Dead curated by Aaron and Bryce Dessner of The National, with all profits going to Red Hot Organization. ‘Day of the Dead’ was released on 20th May via 4AD Records. Featuring an incredible cast list, the compilation is a wide-ranging tribute to the songwriting and experimentalism of The Grateful Dead which took four years to record and features over 60 artists from varied musical backgrounds, with 59 tracks and a duration of almost six hours. The limited edition 10xLP ‘Day of the Dead’ LP boxed set is released today via 4Ad Records, on individually coloured vinyl.

Among others are Unknown Mortal Orchestra covering “Shakedown Street,” Bonnie “Prince” Billy singing “Rubin & Cherise,” and old-school soul howler Charles Bradley teaming up with soul/funk revivalists the Menahan Street Band for “Cumberland Blues.”

The tracks curated from Bryce & Aaron Dessner ,The compilation was produced by Aaron Dessner and co-produced by Bryce Dessner and Josh Kaufman. Grateful Dead tribute album were released a year ago. Considering the album has 59 tracks, this is just a small sampling. Last March, a whole bumch of covers from the record were released, including takes from the National, Courtney Barnett, the War on Drugs, Bruce Hornsby with Justin Vernon’s band DeYarmond Edison, and Phosphorescent with Jenny Lewis., the National and Grizzly Bear members also performed a’ 17-minute cover of “Terrapin Station Suite” .

The good folks at American Laundromat Records are to release a special tribute to The Smiths including the contributions from Kitten, Doug Martsch (Built To Spill), Katy Goodman (La Sera/Vivian Girls), and Girl in a Coma. Each artist in the collection offers a uniquely illuminating interpretation of one of their favorite tracks by The Smiths.

It turns out we share a mutual admiration for a good cover. In fact, they’ve been releasing wonderfully curated tribute records over the past few years including tributes to iconic artists such as Elliott Smith, Neil Young, Pixies, and The Smiths. When we learned that some of these albums, including their excellent tribute to The Smiths, had never seen a vinyl release, we knew we had to partner with them to get some of this music out there on wax for the very first time.

So, yeah, for this month’s vinyl we’ve pulled four standouts from that excellent tribute to The Smiths .

On the a-side, Kitten tackles the iconic single “Panic.” The original was released by The Smiths in 1986 as a 7” single through Rough Trade Records and lambasts the pop music of the time (which, Morrissey lamented, “says nothing to me about my life”). It’s followed up by Built To Spill front man Doug Martsch offering a jangly and sparkling acoustic take on the opening track, “Reel Around The Fountain,” from The Smiths’ 1984 self-titled debut album.

The b-side opens up with an exquisite, stripped down version of “What She Says” by La Sera mastermind Katy Goodman. With lush harmonies and a dusty vibe, it’s beautifully atmospheric and floating. Finally, Girl in a Coma offer up a version of “Rubber Ring” that’s both foot-stompingly rugged and raggedly exotic. It’s simply dripping with snarl and ominous mystery.

We’ve pressed 525 standard copies on bronze colored vinyl alongside a special edition of 175 copies on bone colored vinyl with bronze and beer colored splatter exclusively for gold club members. To get one you just have to subscribe to either the Pairings Box or our coffee and vinyl subscription service. Fair warning, less than a dozen copies remain.

something-else-a-tribute-to-the-kinks

There is a rather tasty Kinks Tribute album being given away as the free cover disk with this month’s latest issue of Mojo.

The Kinks will always occupy an important place in rock music history thanks to their early hit “You Really Got Me,” which was one of the first rock songs to use guitar distortion. However, once the first wave of the British Invasion died down and The Beatles emerged as the biggest band in the world, the Kinks began to fade from the public eye, despite continuing to produce infectious pop-rock albums well into the mid-’70s. Singer/rhythm guitarist Ray Davies is widely regarded as one of the greatest songwriters in pop music history and though only a few Kinks songs get played in regular rotation on classic rock radio, the band has dozens of albums worth of great material.

Many of the best acts across multiple genres have cited the Kinks as being a major influence, from punk rock groups such as The Ramones and The Clash to Britpop groups like Oasis and Blur. As one of the early pioneers of hard rock and heavy metal, the Kinks deserve to be in the same conversation as bands like The Beatles and Led Zeppelin when it comes to the godfathers of riff-based music.

It contains 14 tracks and includes the likes of Gaz Coombes, Nada Surf, Chuck Prophet, Jacco Gardner, Wreckless Eric, Mick Harvey and American Wrestlers amongst others.

Have a listen to French duo Les Liminanas’ take on Two Sisters also featuring Anton Newcombe and Ty Segall’s version of perhaps the band’s greatest composition, Waterloo Sunset, and retains faithful to the original whilst imbuing it with a whole new gnarly charm.

Various Artists "Please, Please, Please: A Tribute to The Smiths"

The Smiths were one of the U.K.’s brightest pop acts of the ’80s, with singer Morrissey setting his witty and emotionally honest lyrics against Johnny Marr’s serpentine, arpeggiated guitar lines. This tribute smartly avoids trying to mimic the band’s singular charm, aiming to redefine the songs as if they’d always been part of each performer’s catalog. Trespassers William slow down “There Is A Light That Never Goes Out” until it purrs with sweetness. Solvents turn “Is It Really So Strange” into a campfire clap-along. Elk City interprets “I Know It’s Over” as a skipping piece of Chamber pop. Belly’s Tanya Donelly finds an intimacy to “Shoplifters of the World Unite.” Kitten retains the firepower of “Panic” with a Eurodisco sound resembling Blondie. Greg Laswell sits at the piano for a dramatic take on “Half A Person.” William Fitzsimmons whispers the lullaby “Please Please Please Let Me Get What I Want,” and the legendary Wedding Present adds a muscular power to “Hand in Glove.” It’s a worthwhile tribute that reinvents the songs while retaining The Smiths‘ glorious spirit.

Praise for Please, Please, Please…

“An awesome cover-compilation!”

Morrissey and his (charming) men get the sweet-and-tender treatment from alt-pop types, including Sixpence None the Richer and Mandy Moore pal Mike Viola, who classes up “How Soon Is Now?” with movie-score strings.”

“An outstanding and highly varied assortment of Smiths covers… listing every track’s merits would take too long — there’s hardly a dud among the two-disc set’s 20 tracks.”

Excellent tribute album with some great versions of classic Ride tracks,

The Blog That Celebrates Itself has released a fantastic tribute album to the band. You should definitely listen to this. Brazil’s Renato Malizia (of The Blog That Celebrates Itself) continually works his butt off interviewing all manner of fantastic noise makers for his site (most recently Dråpe). But he’s also posted a fun filled tribute to Ride featuring 24 bands covering the classics! ‘Leave Them All Behind’ kicks off with a collaboration between Oliver Ackermann (of A Place To Bury Strangers) and Ceremony! Plus tunes from Rev Rev Rev, Jaguwar, The Sorry Shop, Stella Diana, Lunaire and more

‘Leave Them All Behind – A Tribute to Ride’ features 24 tracks that will definitely appeal to Ride fans who liked the bands earlier recordings, there’s plenty of guitars and distortion.

Best albums of 2016 Various Artists - Day of the Dead

This five-plus hour, 59 track Grateful Dead tribute album is a monument of living history – an image of their golden road branching out endlessly…. Pretty much every sound the band touched on or suggested gets represented – from ambient music (several sound-sculptures by Bryce Dessner of the National and experimental composer Tim Hecker’s “Transitive Refraction Axis for John Oswald”) to Afropop (Orchestra Baobob turning “Franklin’s Tower” into a shining desert mirage) to psychedelia (Flaming Lips making throbbing lysergic mush out of “Dark Star”) to roots rock (Lucinda Williams locating the lust in a slow humid “Going Down the Road Feeling Bad”). But indie songwriters and guitar nerds get most of the action; Courtney Barnett hazily savors the conversational drift of the post-Altamont rap session “New Speedway Boogie,” and Stephen Malkmus does his hey-whatever guitar wizard thing on a ten minute “China Cat Sunflower → I Know You Rider,” just to pick two of the more wonderful examples among many.

Tribute albums can be a profit center for record companies during dark times. They have a built-in fan base and they make great real-life, gift-wrapped, non-Spotify gifts. Day of the Dead is woefully original because its classics deviate so much from the original.  Curated by The National, the erudite indie giants, the five-album set’s interpretations eschew the long jams that are Dead staples and inspired a million stoned dance moves at concerts. “Truckin’” in the hands of Marijuana Deathsquads is less a road anthem and more despairing cry. Lucius’s “Uncle John’s Band” isn’t Jerry Garcia’s amiable life lesson but something more solemn. Other versions hew closer to the original, like a Kurt Vile and the Violators “Box of Rain” and a live version of “I Know You Rider” by the Dead’s Bob Weir so rollicking that The National, who back him on the track, forget their trademark lugubriousness, and revel in this classic.

Album Stream: The Reverb Conspiracy – Volume 4 (Fuzz Club Records)

We’re pleased to bring you The Reverb Conspiracy – Volume 4 compilation (listen below), which is scheduled to be officially released on November 17th through Fuzz Club Records.

Casper Dee, founder of Fuzz Club Records, comments:

“I like to look it as a modern Nuggets series… a way of capturing the essence of the underground scene as it is today and documenting it for the history books. There’s so much amazing music coming out now and a huge energy within the scene; we feel like this is an era of Rock & Roll that we’ll all look back on as the start of something big.”

The Reverb Conspiracy compilations and the label itself are widely lauded as a crucial catalyst of the European psych movement – “arguably the most important label in neo-psychedelia” (Vinyl Me, Please). Volume 4 aims to document the relentless DIY energy within the scene and bring together some of the best upcoming bands in a scene that continues to grow at an unfathomable pace.

Following a summer of endless new psych festivals appearing across Europe and countless new bands emerging and earning widespread praise, it’s unavoidably clear that the European psych/rock and roll scene is getting set to dominate underground music. Vol. 4 reflects on all that’s going on and offers a taste of some of the best in psych, shoegaze, garage rock, post-punk, rock and roll and everything in-between.

The highlights of the compilation include the mind-altering psych-pop of Ulrika Spacek, the discordant shoegaze of My Invisible Friend and the kaleidoscopic splendour of Josefin Ohrn + The Liberation. The record also boasts cuts from the likes of The Madcaps, Soft Walls, Pretty Lightning, Giobia, The Oscillation and Fuzz Club’s own TAU, 10000 Russos, The Orange Revival and Throw Down Bones.
