The UK’s Ultimate Painting joined us for an exclusive Live Session while on their US Tour joining Twerps and White Fence. The band features James Hoare on Guitar & Vocals from the band Veronica Falls, Jack Cooper from Mazes on Guitar & Vocals, Neil Robinson on Drums, and Chicagoan Anthony Cozzi (Radar Eyes) on Bass. The session was engineered by Mike Lust of Manor Mobile Recording. Video and editing by Big Foot Media. Check out the full audio of the session here too,  – https://soundcloud.com/chirpradio/set…

Jack Cooper & James Hoare are Ultimate Painting. The two formed a fast friendship when Jack’s band Mazes (U.K.) were on tour supporting James’ band Veronica Falls, sharing similar tastes in music, art & films. It wasn’t until after returning home that a musical synergy was formed. After numerous demos were exchanged, a few casual jam sessions turned into something more; a partnership. Christening themselves after a piece of art by the Southern Colorado desert community (and fanciful geodesic dome builders) “Drop City”, the lads set to work recording their debut proper – released by Trouble In Mind in October of 2014.

Equal parts post-punk and Britpop with a smidgen of new wave angst thrown in, London-based four-piece Desperate Journalist are one of the most exciting bands to emerge from the capital’s underground scene this past year. Frontwoman and main mouthpiece Jo Bevan also happens to be an idol in waiting, an energetically captivating bundle of joy whose mesmerising performances undoubtedly form the catalyst of her band’s live show. Ignore at your peril. Video for ‘Hesitate’ by Desperate Journalist taken from the album ‘Desperate Journalist’ out now on Fierce Panda (UK) & Minty Fresh (US)

‘A Hunger Artist’ is the second song to be taken from Girls Names third album, “Arms Around a Vision”, out 2nd October 2015.

Where ‘Reticence’ was all primordial clang and clatter, recalling the best moments of early ’80s no wave and its forerunners – think Glenn Branca and Rhys Chatham’s respective guitar ensembles – bookending one of the most immediate, accessible songs the band have ever written at its core, ‘A Hunger Artist’ is an altogether more colossal and meandering beast.

While its chiming guitar introduction might again bear passing resemblance to Branca’s deft melodic interplay, its much quicker to cut to the chase. And what a chase it is: leading you over moonlit autobahns and down dark European back alleys. Drawing to mind Neu! and Roxy-era Eno, the Northern Irish quartet lay down a motorik groove that rarely lets up across its almost six-minute runtime, allowing gossamer synths and insistent bass to dance atop with aplomb.

Alongside this, the band are set to return to London for a one-off show this October (the 19th) at the historic 100 Club: a not-to-be-missed opportunity to see Arms Around a Vision brought to stunning life in the live setting.

Hooton Tennis Club tune up in front of a Marquee packed with people sopping wet from the downpour outside. Other than a muted chant of ‘Hooton! Hooton!’ it seems like most are here to shelter.
The Liverpool quartet  with a Brooklyn Sound come offstage soaked in sweat, leaving a tent full of converts to their heavy-riffing twin guitar indie rock, Could be Merseyside’s answer to Parquet Courts. It’s all about ‘Powerful Pierre’, a three-minute barrage of sandpaper-rough guitars and shouted vocals from singing guitarists James Madden and Ryan Murphy. The fact that Hooton Tennis Club are itching to make as much noise as possible. The rain does Hooton Tennis Club a favour, and their fuzzy melodies and headbanging stage presence ensure a bustling crowd stays put. This time next year they’ll be powering through songs from debut album ‘Highest Point In Cliff Town’ due 28th August on Heavenly Recordings on the John Peel stage at Glastonbury. With a year to bed in, and on a much bigger PA, they’ll be massive. Check them out at Summer Festivals

To coincide with the track, the band have revealed a new video which seeʼs them frolicking in the park as well as performing at our Heavenly 25 birthday party earlier this year.

The second single from the new Fort Frances EP “No One Needs to Know Our Name.”

With that line Fort Frances’ new EP reaches its climax, in the middle of the single “Anonymous,” and the band announces-without question-their plans to continue evolving. No One Needs To Know Our Name is a leap forward for the Chicago trio, leaning more toward rock than their folk beginnings. Traces of Spoon and Dawes ooze out of every song while singer David McMillin maintains his pop radio-friendly voice.

The biggest similarity between this new EP and some of their older work is the idiosyncrasies that you find all throughout. There’s some phrasing in the lead track “Days Get Heavy” that you don’t hear very often (reminds me a bit of Fiona Apple’s Extraordinary Machine) that betrays the campfire feel produced by the pretty three-part harmonies.

“Best Of Luck” sounds like it could’ve been a Good News For People Who Love Bad News song that just missed the cut. The music overpowers the lyrics a bit, but I like the line at the end, “Your mind takes pictures of everywhere you’ve been, and everything that’s lost can be found again.”

The record may be called No One Needs To Know Our Name, but I think people will want to know Fort Frances once this EP hits. These are five well-crafted tunes performed by guys who’ve been making hits flying under the radar for years. Take some time to listen to The Atlas and Harbor before everyone knows their name.

“No One Needs To Know Our Name” will be released on May 12th.

Produced and mixed by Sam Kassirer

The legendary New Orleans‘ psych-folk artist Damien Youth, who has a recording history that dates back to the eighties, and is frequently (and deservedly) compared to Donovan, Robyn Hitchcock and Paul Roland. Youth’s output has slowed to a trickle these days, making releases like the “The Woodlock Demos” all the more precious. No idea whether these two tracks are a teaser for something else that he’s working on, but they’re lovely acoustic gems, which sound complete in their fragile, unadorned states. “Quest to Succumb” in particular, burns with a quiet intensity, which will get right under your skin.

A mysterious cassette-only artist who began putting out material on tape in the late ’80s, although some of it started to appear on CD in the late ’90s. His music is haunting acoustic rock with a sense of whimsy akin to Robyn Hitchcock or Donovan. It’s solid, melodic stuff that would most likely appeal to Hitchcock fans, despite the sparse production. His Bride of the Asylum CD of 1998 put some of his work into slightly larger circulation, in better fidelity.

BLACK HONEY - Live At Leeds 2015

Brighton’s Black Honey are setting themselves up to be music’s newest myth-makers. Last year, with no information online about the band, they posted their second demo ‘Teenager’ along with a phone number, encouraging the curious-minded to drop them a text. Recently, they sold initial physical copies of their single ‘Madonna’ on eBay, with bidding reaching up to £20 a piece. Catch the band at various festivals this summer,
