In early 2003 a young Steve McBean was living in Vancouver and in the midst of a transition from his sorely overlooked rock band Jerk With A Bomb into an auspicious new chapter. JWAB was his umpteenth band in as many years woodshedding as both a front-man and a supporting musician in countless punk & hard core bands in the Canadian wilds starting in his teens and going through his twenties. JWAB was arguably the band in which he’d finally found his signature singing voice and started collaborating with drummer Joshua Wells and vocalist Amber Webber.

Around this time his friend Dan Bejar (Destroyer, New Pornographers) sent to Jagjaguwar a demo tape of new songs that Steve had been writing. He wasn’t sure if it they were JWAB songs or something new entirely. The songs were randy & ribald, with a primitive drum machine beat and a Bo Diddley guitar swagger. They were scintillating and taught us things that our parents were too scared to teach. These were the demos for the songs that would be re-recorded as the debut album by Pink Mountaintops, a sister project to the other McBean-fronted rock band that was being born at the same time — Black Mountain. This was an exciting time not only for McBean — who was bubbling with songs & ideas — but a turning point for Jagjaguwar, thrilled to sign two of its most significant projects simultaneously.

Pink Mountaintops, Black Mountain frontman Stephen McBean also leads the sometimes-great side project Pink Mountaintops, and they released a deeply strange album called Get Back earlier this year. The French lifestyle website April 77 just recruited the band to release a new two-song 7″. The A-side is a bleary, twangy rocker called “Asleep With An Angel.” It doesn’t quite return the band to the heights of their incredible, underrated 2009 album “Outside Love”, but it’s a step away from the L.A.-style melted black plastic of Get Back. Listen below.to the B side.

34 years ago this weekend the Joy Division vocalist and lyricist Ian Curtis, tragically took his own life but the legacy that the post punk pioneer and his songs, have left behind is unmistakable, despite only releasing two full length albums “Unknown Pleasures” and “Closer” his influence is evident in their sound produced by countless bands who continue to be inspired, his baritone vocal, dance style amd minimilistic sound, the tone of Curtis’s voice and the lyrics were huge,

here is a cover of the song “Transmission” slowed down and recorded around the time of LOW’s second album,
next up is the Band PINK MOUNTAINTOPS and their version of “Atomosphere” sounding very much like the Velvet Underground would if they had covered this song

and a version from the seminal goth, punk band THE CURE with “Love Will Tear Us Apart”
