Developing its musical roots in Philadelphia, Mt. Joy ,one of the new class of bands set to release its self-titled debut album on March 2nd. Founding members Matt Quinn (vocals/guitar) and Sam Cooper (guitar) have been making music since the early 2000s. However, it wasn’t until several years ago that the two came together and began to write songs that would form the foundation of their debut album. Mt. Joy combines old-school classic rock and touches of rootsy acoustic music with vibrant, well-crafted songs that overflow with hooks, tenderness and singalong moments.

In the wistful and nostalgic “Jenny Jenkins,” from Mt. Joy’s forthcoming debut, Quinn’s emotional phrasing leaves him pleading and quivering with desire. While not a rendition of the traditional folk song of the same name, Mt. Joy’s tune does have a connection to the cover of it by Jerry Garcia and David Grisman.

“‘Jenny Jenkins’ is a song I wrote about moving to Los Angeles,” Quinn writes via email. “Growing up in the Philadelphia area, I feel like I was exposed to a lot of ‘real’ grounded people. L.A. was kind of a culture shock — a lot of people offering meetings that don’t materialize and just a general culture of false promises. I even found out the palm trees were imported, and was just feeling pretty down on myself and the city. The song was put together as a song of appreciation for my girlfriend, who was my only real ally in the city at that time. As a tip of the cap to some of my heroes, I used the name of one of my favorite folk songs from a record my dad always used to play by Jerry Garcia and David Grisman, ‘Jenny Jenkins.'”

Genesis Revelation WO AC

On January 24th, 1975, Genesis performed at Los Angeles’ Shrine Auditorium during their Lamb Lies Down on Broadway tour. The band knew it would be their last tour with front man Peter Gabriel; the audience didn’t. Just a few months later, drummer Phil Collins took over as lead singer, making this L.A. performance surprisingly historic. This recording which includes hit single “The Carpet Crawlers,” marks the last professional recording with then vocalist Peter Gabriel.

Gabriel’s departure threatened Genesis’ very existence as a band. After all, he was more than the front man; he interpreted the band’s proggy flights of fancy in literal and visual ways. Collins, who had sung backup to that point, didn’t have the same flair, but he did have the pipes. He reluctantly became the group’s lead singer, and as Genesis gradually transitioned from artful eccentrics to more reliable pop purveyors, his natural stage presence and ability to sing complex songs while drumming made the transition a smooth one.

How The West Was Won (3CD/4LP/1DVD)

Led Zeppelin are undoubtedly one of the greatest live acts of the 1970s, but their only live album from the era — the soundtrack to 1976’s The Song Remains The Same — captured them on a rather limp night. This situation was finally resolved in 2003 when Jimmy Page combed through hours of tapes from the band’s 1972 tour and cobbled together this killer 18 track set. There are tons of Zeppelin bootlegs floating around, but none of them sound this crisp and alive, even though they occasionally cheated and combined multiple versions of a song into one. Highlights include a ferocious “Immigrant Song,” a 25-minute “Dazed and Confused” and a 23-minute “Whole Lotta Love” jam. “It’s Zeppelin at its best,” Page said in 2003. “Every single member of the band is in tip-top form. It’s the magic point where it takes on a fifth element.”

Fifteen years ago, Led Zeppelin issued How the West Was Won, premiering performances from the band’s June 25th and 27th, 1972 concerts at the Los Angeles Forum and Long Beach Arena.  Now, those seminal tracks have been newly remastered under the supervision of Jimmy Page for a surprise addition to the band’s Super Deluxe library – as well as in a variety of formats, all of which are due from Atlantic/Swan Song on March 23rd including the first-ever Blu-ray Audio and vinyl editions.  The remastered How the West Was Won arrives in advance of the band’s official 50th anniversary celebration, which will kick off this September.

How the West Was Won (a No. 1 album in the U.S. and a No. 5 in the U.K.) sequenced material from the Los Angeles and Long Beach concerts to replicate a single concert from start to finish as the band introduced songs from its then-unreleased fifth album, Houses of the Holy (which would be released nine months later), and looked back on its already-storied catalogue.  Among its 18 tracks are a 25-minute version of “Dazed and Confused,” a 21-minute blues medley built around “Whole Lotta Love,” and fiery takes on “Rock and Roll,” “Moby Dick,” “Immigrant Song,” “Black Dog,” and of course, “Stairway to Heaven.”

The remastered How the West Was Won will be available in the following versions:

  • CD – Remastered audio on three CDs;
  • Vinyl – Remastered audio on four 180-gram vinyl LPs;
  • Blu-Ray Audio – 96kHz/24 bit 5.1 (DTS-HD Master Audio Surround) and stereo mixes (PCM Stereo and DTS-HD Master Audio Stereo);
  • Streaming & Digital Download – Remastered audio; and
  • Super Deluxe Boxed Set:

o Remastered audio on three CDs and four 180-gram vinyl LPs.
o DVD of album in Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround and PCM Stereo, plus photo gallery.
o High-def download card of all stereo audio content at 96kHz/24 bit.
o A book filled with rare and previously unpublished photos of the band at each of the concert locations, plus memorabilia and ephemera.

Hop Along is Frances Quinlan (songwriter, lead vocalist, and rhythm guitarist), Tyler Long (bass), Joe Reinhart (guitar), and Mark Quinlan (drums). Frances Quinlan is a force of nature and her voice is one of the most unique in music today. Their last album, “Painted Shut”, was a truly outstanding album that only gets better with more listens. The fine folks at Saddle Creek will be releasing the new album Bark Your Head Off, Dog . Here’s some info on the new album.

The album considers what it’s like to cast off longheld and misguided perceptions, yet without the assurance of knowing what new ones will replace them. Quinlan has been meditating a lot on power. In this particular moment in history, this thought begs a greater question: what do we do with power and the men who so freely brandish it? “So strange to be shaped by such strange men” is a line that repeats on more than one song on the album. “I’ve been thinking about that a lot. That I just deferred to men throughout my life,” Quinlan says. “But by thinking you’re powerless, you’re really robbing yourself. I’m at a point in my life where I’m saying instead, ‘Well, what can I do?’

Hop Along – “How Simple” New album Bark Your Head Off, Dog – Out April 6th, 2018

19 tracks strong, with an unrestricted sense of coming together to make this album. It wants you to get your head straight – but first, the process will make your head spin. Back in the ‘Twins’ days, there was talk about the schizophrenia of Ty’s outlook; today, it’s super-dual, with loads of realities all folding back on each other. We’re tracking five or six full-blown personalities, unconcerned with convention or continuity.

The songs came in the flow of the year: days of vomit and days of ecstasy and escape too and days between. The rulebook may have been tossed but ‘Freedom’s Goblin’ is thick with deep songwriting resources, be it stomper, weeper, ballad, screamer, banger or funker-upper, all diverted into new Tydentities – each one marking a different impasse, like a flag whirling into a knot, exploding and burning on contact, in the name of love and loathing.

‘Freedom’s Goblin’ wears a twisted production coat: tracks were cut all around, from LA to Chicago to Memphis, whether chilling at home or touring with the Freedom Band. Five studios were required to get all the sounds down, engineered by Steve Albini, F Bermudez, Lawrence ‘Boo’ Mitchell and of course, Ty himself. The goal was getting free, embracing any approach necessary to communicate new heights and depths, new places for the fuzz to land among octaving harmonies, dancefloor grooves, synths, saxes and horns, jams, post-Nicky-Hopkins R&B electric piano vibes, children-of-the-corn psycho-rebellions, old country waltzes and down-by-the-river shuffles. Basically, the free-est pop songs Ty’s ever put on tape and one about his dog too.

“They have a raw energy, emotion, and very hooky tunes, all anchored by Hannah Joy’s confident and soaring vocals.” Among Australia’s most exciting acts, the Sydney trio’s huge debut single ‘Edge of Town’ made a monumental impact. It’s emotional, evocative songwriting, and Hannah Joy’s unmatchable high notes still give me shivers. They doubled down on that introduction with a self-titled EP packed with heart-bursting alt-country tinged indie rock last year. It’s a cathartic, unstoppable rush, and the band’s first full-length is set to push them to even greater heights. You can just tell this is going to be something special

We loved Rocket, the album (Sandy) Alex G released last year. The prolific singer-songwriter, ”[(Sandy) Alex G] wants to try it all. He’s as interested in mis-shaping a great song as he is perfecting it.” In 2017, (Sandy) Alex G became known for his collaborations with Frank Ocean and for experimenting with a new, twangy country influence. We can’t be sure, but today’s new track “Fay” may be an indication of where he’s headed next.

On “Fay,” (Sandy) Alex G — real name Alex Giannascoli — crafts a lush, soft pop landscape cast in unexpected darkness. “Here they come knockin’ at my door,” he warns, gently mimicking the sound of a police siren. “What’s the problem, Officer? What you knockin’ for?”

Life has ways of letting you temporarily forget that it’s one big shit show, ultimately balancing things out to a bearable normality. The sophomore album from New Zealand outfit Salad Boys cushions the blow of front man Joe Sampson’s less-than-cheery observations within fuzzed-out, lo-fi garage guitars, the sounds of jangling indie-pop circa 1987 and Sampson’s own calm-cool-collected vocals. The lo-fi production suits the mood, recalling the melancholy charm of indie acts like The Chills and The Bats.

“Blown Up” kicks things off with Krautrock rhythm and an aggressive flurry of guitars, as Sampson laments the pressure to constantly “concentrate and utilize our time.” “I’m useless to to myself and doomed to follow/Someone else,” he sings on “Psych Slasher,” the punk energy and triumphant vocals turning all that angst into a good time. “Scenic Route To Nowhere” takes things in a Parquet Courts direction, the angular guitar lines emphasizing Sampson’s mention of “anxiety,” “choking” and “stumbling.”

Jack Cooper is a musician & songwriter living in London, England. He is currently a member of the band Ultimate Painting. “Sandgrown” is his first album as a solo artist. He says of the cover, “I was selling merch at the last show of my US tour and a guy who had bought a record told me that the live band sounded like Meddle-era Pink Floyd. In hindsight I should’ve hugged him because as far as compliments go, that’s the best I’ve ever had. I think that post-Syd and pre-Dark Side Pink Floyd were such an interesting band… weird, English, pastoral, loose, economic and occasionally perfect. I love Syd Barrett and most things up to The Wall but I think that mid-era is the most fascinating. I love recording covers and in learning this I gained some fresh perspective on simplicity.”
