Protomartyr is an American post-punk band formed in in 2008 in Detroit, Michigan. It features Joe Casey on vocals, Greg Ahee on guitar, Alex Leonard on drums and Scott Davidson on bass guitar.

One band I’ve been enjoying recently is Protomartyr, from Detroit, whose second album “Under Color of Official Right”  Again, there are plenty of familiar references – hardcore, post-punk, and at times the chilly experimentalism of Wire – but again they’re used in a way that sounds fresh and bracing, like a cold wind on a sunny winter’s day.

Chicago’s The Walking Bicycles have been making their own brand of bombastic and peculiar music since 2004.
“doomy, booming music that sounds like a medical emergency crossed with an existential crisis… Almost as impressive as its sheer power, though, is its concision” “dark and aggressive, but they’ve got plenty of hooks”
“the quartet hauls doom metal’s weight through post-punk’s sharp corners… Jason’s unnerving bass lines and Deric’s relentless drumwork mix seamlessly with Jocelyn’s screams and Julius’s squalls. It’s a singular engine of sound”
”evoking early, abrasive Siouxsie and the Banshees and even touching on Clinic’s more frenzied forays into noise pop.”

Cherry Glazer have just come to my attention, A three-piece band from L.A. that took root in 2012 when front woman, songwriter/guitarist Clementine Creevy began making bedroom demos under the name Clembutt. These rough tracks evolved under the mentorship of Lucy Miyaki, of L.A. band Tashaki Miyaki, and were later recorded with engineer Joel Jerome. After adding bassist Sean Redman and drummer Hannah Uribe, the band was formed, and Burger Records released their first collection, Papa Cremp with dreamy vocals and an ethereal guitar, Cherry Glazerr’s “Trick or Treat Dancefloor” has become the band’s best known song to date, having been featured in a campaign for iconic fashion label Saint Laurent as well as in the television show Arrow.

But the band goes beyond shoe gazey, lo-fi dream pop. Their bare bones style and precise, honest lyrics anchor a diverse sound that ranges from White’s Not My Color This Evening, with Sleater Kinney’s post punk influences to their break out song, the surf pop “Teenage Girl”, which premiered on internationally known style site Rookie Mag.

Cherry Glazerr consistently tour in Los Angeles and Orange County, having played festivals Burgerama, Growlers Beach Goth Party and Jubilee in Downtown L.A. where they shared the stage with Bleached and The Black Lips. Most recently, they played the El Rey, opening for legendary 80’s punk band Redd Kross and Mikal Cronin. The band’s name is taken from NPR reporter Cherry Glaser

“We know you’re supposed to enjoy your senior year and I appreciate it and everything, but to be honest, we just can’t wait to graduate,” says Clementine Creevy with a laugh. Not that you can blame her. The 17-year-old frontwoman of LA-based band Cherry Glazerr is busy getting things together for their 10-day tour later this week, and she really has other things to think about than homework. Besides the tour, Creevy and her bandmates, drummer Hannah Uribe (also a high school senior) and bassist Sean Redman (who’s the oldest of the trio, at 23) are gearing up to release their new seven-inch on Suicide Squeeze Records. The pair of tracks includes “Had Ten Dollaz,” which Saint Laurent designer Hedi Slimane featured in the recent Fall/ Winter show, and this B-side, “Nurse Ratched.”

Twenty years and 13 albums later, noise-pop veterans Deerhoof have made their most brutal record since their 1997 debut, The Man, the King, the Girl. Janet Jackson and Madonna specifically their forward thinking production in the late ’80s were the source of inspiration, which I suppose shows slightly in how deeply funky La Isla Bonita is. But in typical Deerhoof fashion, the influences work in erratic ways, which is a big part of the fun in grooving along (the dance moves one could do to this record, dear god). “It became a rough, ragged, no-budget punk rock thing that I thought was a neat post-apocalyptic tribute to this pre-apocalyptic sound.

Pop-punk and juvenile points of view often go hand in hand, but Brooklyn band Chumped bring the sort of emotional depth that transcends mere declarations of, “I guess this is growing up.” Here, on their debut LP, Chumped give voice to those who feel tired and frustrated by their mid-20s, They’re clearly having a lot of fun with these songs, despite being full of questions about life choices. As with the words themselves, there’s a lot of dimension in Chumped’s gnarly guitar riffs and hard-hitting percussion: I hear influences that range from second-wave emo stars Get Up Kids to blink-182 to Letters to Cleo to early Weezer to their contemporaries in Swearin’.

Cleo Tucker and Harmony Tividad, the brains behind Los Angeles fuzz-punk duo Girlpool, have a penchant for penning catchy critiques about prevalent social issues, like our culture of silence. First there was “Jane”, a noir-ish guitar ballad encouraging all to speak up in the face of oppression. In the pair’s latest unapologetic single, “Blah Blah Blah”, they refuse to stay silent, calling out a nameless former friend for their meaningless words and excuses. Seeing how this person left Girlpool crying in the rain, chased other girls, and then called them after for comfort, it’s sweet retribution when the two snarl together: “I can’t stand your shit anymore!” and just for comparison here is the BIG STAR version

The Brooklyn duo Courtship Ritual make spare, hushed, minimal indie-pop, like Beach House with a slight dance-music edge, or like the xx with a little more old-school 4AD reverb in their sound. That’s a simple, durable sound, but on their debut album “Pith“, they’re already exploring its edges, changing its definition from song to song. Pith has been out on cassette for a little while now, but it’s about to get a proper wide release. My friend Nick Sylvester produced the album, and he’s putting it out on his Godmode label. This is one of the best indie albums you’ll hear this summer.

Dune Rats are a three-piece from Brisbane, Australia.Their debut EP ‘Sexy Beach’ received praise both nationally and internationally, capturing the minds and hearts of music bloggers around the world. With constant touring Dune Rats reputation for a raucous and energetic live show gained them a spot on the Big Day Out Festival and national tours with bands such as The Drums, Best Coast, The Vines, Ariel Pink’s Haunted Graphitti, and Cults.
Dune Rats singles “Fuck It” and “Red Light Green Light” followed up the boys previous airplay success and both have had high rotation on Triple J and plenty of love on YouTube. Crowd-bending shows at SXSW, Splendour In The Grass, Spin Off Festival, Circo and the much lauded EP ‘Smile’ have kept the boys busy running around but they are already in and out of various studios and rehearsal rooms writing and recording for their first album,

New York’s Public Access TV are Radar Band Of The Week in this week’s NME, and for good reason. Since emerging at the beginning of this year with debut track ‘Monaco’, they’ve slowly but surely set out their stall as the most exciting thing to step out of Gotham in recent memory. ‘In The Mirror’ follows the buoyant garage-pop of this summer’s ‘Rebounder’ EP, showing that they’ve still got plenty left in the tank with a Costello strut and Strokes-esque loucheness. Listen below and catch the band when they head over to the UK in November to support Circa Waves who will be at the Bodega Social In Nottingham on the 11th November.
