Depeche Moe, 2017

Depeche Mode has been performing a cover of David Bowie’s “Heroes” on its Global Spirit Tour for the past several months, and today the group released a music video for a studio version of the cut in honor of the iconic song’s 40th anniversary. Tomorrow marks 40 years since Bowie released the title track from “Heroes” – the second in his acclaimed and so-called ‘Berlin Trilogy’. Having made their rendition a staple highlight of their ‘immaculate’ recent live sets, Depeche Mode have honoured the song with an official cover and video recorded from the ‘Highline Sessions’ and directed by Tim Saccenti.

Of the song, frontman Dave Gahan says:
’Heroes’ is the most special song to me at the moment. Bowie is the one artist who I’ve stuck with since I was in my early teens. His albums are always my go-to on tour and covering ‘Heroes’ is paying homage to Bowie.”

Limited to just 300 Copies on 7″ Vinyl. Renowned for the ferocious intensity of their live shows, Yak are back with the new single All I Need Is Some Sunshine In My Life. Recorded with Tame Impala’s Jay Gum Watson in Kevin Parker’s studio in Perth, the track is Yak’s claustrophobic interpretation of The Dixie Nightingale’s cult gospel classic. “A loved one departed and on the way out sent me this song, so we ended up recording a delirious version in the blistering heat of Perth,” says Yak frontman Oli Burslem. “I love the original Dixie Nightingales’ version, it reminds me of songs like Wendy Rene’s ‘After Laughter’, which I imagined was recorded in the same studio with maybe even the same people playing.” On the b-side is Yak’s take on Lee Hazelwood’s Wait and See.

Billy Bragg

So it’s probably no surprise that social activist and folk singer Billy Bragg has chosen to cover “Why We Build the Wall”, taking it out of its operatic context and turning it into something more. The cover has a brand new lyric video , The Anaïs Mitchell song “Why We Build the Wall”, despite being part of her 2010 ancient greek folk-opera Hadestown has turned out to be surprisingly prescient in today’s global political climate.

The first recorded Weyes Blood music since her 2016 breakthrough album Front Row Seat To Earth, Natalie Mering will release a 7″ of cover songs that have helped define her sound over the years. It contains versions of Soft Machines’ A Certain Kind b/w Fred Neil’s Everybody’s Talkin’, as imagined by Harry Nilsson for the Midnight Cowboy soundtrack.

Sydney's Middle Kids, and pop-punk legends Blink-182

Sydney’s Middle Kids are currently one of the most successful musical exports that Australia has produced in recent times. With the group already riding high on a wave of success, they’ve just gone and released a brilliant acoustic cover of Blink-182’s ‘All The Small Things’, the group’s new “sad folk version” of the classic pop-punk anthem comes as part of an upcoming compilation album by online retailing giant Amazon

“We don’t play covers in our live set, but we are interested in the infinite discovery of what makes a ‘great’ song,” the band said. “In this recording, we were attempting to re-imagine a pop-punk classic as a sad country ballad. We kept the beautiful words and the melody, but changed instrumentation to bring out different emotion.”

The group’s cover of the track comes from the new Amazon Acoustics playlist, which is set to drop tomorrow. The playlist also includes a number of other brilliant artists performing acoustic originals and covers, such as Beach Slang, Cody ChesnuTT, Richard Edwards of Margot & The Nuclear So and So’s, and Ruby Empress.

You might also recall the other brilliant covers that Middle Kids have tackled lately, including their astonishing version of Crowded House’s ‘Don’t Dream It’s Over’ for triple j’s Like A Version, and their cover of Car Seat Headrest’s ‘Fill In The Blank’ for the SiriusXMU Sessions. .

Middle Kids are a Sydney-based bundle of sheer buzz at the moment, but in our books it’s more than justified. Their debut EP is a lovely piece of work, and hit single ‘Edge Of Town’ bowls us over every time.

Middle Kids’ Car Seat Headrest cover might be the best thing you’ll hear this week

Today, they have a new gem for us in the form of a glimmering piano take on ‘Fill In The Blank’ by Car Seat Headrest, performed as part of their live SiriusXMU Sessions recently. The guitar-based original makes it through the translation brilliantly, maybe even ending up as our preferred version as it comes out the other side.

Middle Kids are currently in the middle of a US tour, but they’re set to make their way back onto home shores back in November,  Check out Middle Kids’ cover of Blink-182’s ‘All The Small Things’, below.

Kylecraft girlcrazy 3000 joelmorrow

‘Girl Crazy’ is a new collection of covers from Kyle Craft ,  After Kyle Craft wrapped up the recording of his upcoming (all originals) 2018 album, he decided to record a cover of a Jenny Lewis song for fun. This quickly spiraled into a full fledged project with Kyle recording a slew of songs by his favorite female singers.  Working with his bandmate, Kevin Clark in their home studio after hours, Craft multi-tracked all the parts himself, and what started as an idle aside became a labour of love.

Now Sub Pop Records and Kyle Craft have picked ten favorites from the sessions to release as Girl Crazy, a series of 2-track singles rolling out weekly starting in September.   Focusing on Craft’s acclaimed interpretive talents.

Good morning everyone, I recorded an all female artist cover album in June with my piano player, Kevin ClarkSub Pop Records decided to release them two at a time over the next 5 weeks. The first two of the series of tracks, which is called GIRL CRAZY, are Something On Your Mind by Karen Dalton and Distant Fingers by Patti Smith.

Sounds Delicious: Yumi Zouma - Morning Glory (Oasis Cover)

For its Sounds Delicious series, the Seattle website and label Turntable Kitchen recently commissioned the New Zealand synthpop group Yumi Zouma to record a full-album cover of Oasis’ classic album “What’s The Story Morning Glory” , also here is their take on “She’s Electric” . Now Yumi Zouma have shared their take on one of the album’s best-known tunes: The searching singalong “Champagne Super Nova” .  The new version is icy and removed enough that it only barely sounds like the original, but that grand central chorus hook still sounds great even in this new context.

Yumi Zouma will be covering in full the seminal sophomore LP (What’s The Story) Morning Glory? by Oasis in its entirety for the series. Here’s what they told us about the project (sent from their tour…):

“When Matthew from Turntable Kitchen initially approached us to cover a record in it’s entirety for this project, we immediately said yes, and then came up with massive lists of favourite records that we had wanted to cover. The process of narrowing it down to one was completely impossible – we were in the middle of touring our own debut album Yoncalla, and so we would listen to albums in the van everyday.

This process continued until finally we came across the prospect of covering Oasis’s second full-length (What’s The Story) Morning Glory?. At first, the idea sounds ridiculous – covering the album with the most cliched songs from the most pigheaded douchebag rock ‘n’ roll band from an era everyone is tired of – it sounds like the scenario of what-not-to-do when choosing a record to cover. Anyone with a sense of decency would prefer Blur,

Then we put on the CD, listened to it while driving to LA, and immediately knew it was the one. For kids who grew up in the commonwealth of the 90’s, this was the perfect album. The legacy of the Country House vs Roll With It battle, the bad reviews, the stories about the Knebworth gigs, the sibling rivalry, the breakups, and visceral ineptitude – those were all important to us, but given all that, it’s remarkable how (What’s The Story) Morning Glory? remains a classic illustration of power-pop songwriting spread over an entire release. Hate it or love it, this is the album of our youth. It’s been an absolute pleasure to cover, and we’re thankful to Matthew from Turntable Kitchen for allowing us the opportunity to do so.”

We are SO pumped that Yumi Zouma will be covering “Wonderwall,” “Don’t Look Back In Anger,” Some Might Say,” “Champagne Supernova,” for SOUNDS DELICIOUS. If you’re like us, you probably have some solid, angsty memories of the year the original album came out. Hearing Yumi Zouma reinvent it is already making our head spin.

We put our spin on Sia’s “Elastic Heart” with producer and friend, John Fredericks (John The Baptist), which we premiered earlier this week .
It’s a song that moves us in its fierce empowerment to bounce back from what brings you down and is a reminder that each of us has the strength within to own the heart we want to own. We’re excited to officially release the song into the world today on all digital services!.

We are ecstatic to announce we’ll be extending our fall tour to join forces with the sensational San Fermin. The live performance experience is our absolute favorite and we are over the moon to get to share our debut record in so many beautiful cities, night after night.

FREYA RIDINGS – ” Maps “

Freya Ridings

‘Maps’ by Yeah Yeah Yeahs definitely seems to be occupying a place in the sun, a stint in the limelight. Beyonce echoed the track during an emotional moment on ‘Lemonade’, sparking a flurry of reinterpretations.

Newcomer Freya Ridings has perhaps recorded the definitive version, a sparse, intense rendition that speaks eloquently of loss, grief, and love. James FitzGerald directed the visuals, and they beautifully expand on Freya’s wonderful vocal performance. She say’s  “Completely blown away by the wild emotional imagery this video has added to the song. I am really proud to have this as my first official music video!”

Lo-fi Spanish indie band Hinds have been on and off the road since releasing a deluxe edition of their debut full-length, Leave Me Alone, last October. That means that the last thing the Madrid-based four-piece released was a cover of Los Nastys’It was Hinds‘ first Spanish-language song. Now, ten months on, they’ve returned with another cover. This time it’s a version of Kevin Ayers’s 1973 song “Caribbean Moon.” The original was heavy on woodwind, and Ayers affected a cringey Caribbean accent through the whole thing, Hinds switching the flutes into a surf-rock guitar lick with a background whistle. The vocals trade off between Carlotta Cosials’s intentional absurdity and Ana García Perrote’s straight(ish) delivery.

Original song by Kevin Ayers (1973) we fell in love with this song the first time paco loco showed it to us in the studio (while recording our second album!!), we didn’t think we needed stronger reasons to do a cover of it 🙂
