With the release of Blizzard of Ozz, on Sept. 20th, 1980, Ozzy Osborne initiated one of the most improbable career comebacks in rock history, silencing scores of unbelievers who felt the former Black Sabbath singer could never make it on his own. Ozzy himself was possibily one of those doubters.

So low was Osbourne’s self-esteem after being dismissed by Sabbath, in April 1979, that he would waste months wallowing in self-pity, sequestered in a seedy L.A. motel, while continuing to indulge in his numerous vices. In the end, it took an outcast of similar proportions with his future manager and, then later, wife, Sharon Arden to come to Ozzy’s rescue, at a time when she was looking to break ranks with her father, legendary artist manager Don Arden who, coincidentally was still in charge of Black Sabbath

In each other, Ozzy and Sharon saw something no one else did: hope. And so they started searching high and low for accomplices also willing to take a chance on Osbourne. Though the going was tough and the only label willing to offer a contract was Jet Records,  they eventually found former Randy Rhoads from Quiet Riot a guitar prodigy who amazed Ozzy with his formidable musical talents and songwriting abilities.

Randy Rhoads flew to England in November 1979 to join Ozzy and Australian-born bassist Bob Daisley (ex-Rainbow, Widowmaker, Chicken Shack and Kahvas Jute) for rehearsals in the seclusion of the Welsh countryside, backed by a virtual cavalcade of stand-in drummers.  it was another veteran musician, longtime Uriah Heep drummer Lee Kerslake, who wound up completing the formation informally baptized as the “Blizzard of Ozz” (based on an old suggestion from Ozzy’s dad).

Osbourne’s former bandmates in Black Sabbath had piled on the pressure by delivering a triumphant return to form in Heaven and Hell  their first studio album with the newly aqquired lead singer Ronnie James Dio which bowled over fans and critics and quickly shot into the U.K. Top 10. All this while the Blizzard of Ozz was simultaneously hard at work in rural Ridge Farm Studios, hacking away at their as yet untitled debut.

Osbourne, Rhoads, Daisley, Kerslake and session keyboardist Don Airey produced a stunning set of songs built around Rhoads’ uncanny mastery of classically-trained lead and rhythm guitar work, Daisley’s evocative lyrics, Kerslake’s song-arranging experience, and Osbourne’s inimitable voice and charisma.

Those songs have since become standards of Ozzy Osbourne’s concert performances — especially the explosive call-to-arms of “I Don’t Know,” the ready-made hit single that was “Crazy Train,” the cautionary tale of “Suicide Solution” and the gothic fan favorite, “Mr. Crowley,” which benefited from a timeless cathedral synth intro by the talented Mr. Airey. Nestled amidst these popular all-timers were the heartfelt ballad “Goodbye to Romance” (Ozzy’s sad adieu to Sabbath), a pair of relentless heavy rockers in “No Bone Movies” and “Steal Away (The Night)” and twin showcases of Rhoads’ versatile talents in the acoustic interlude “Dee” and neoclassical epic “Revelation (Mother Earth).”

Blizzard of Ozz — as the album was ultimately named so that Ozzy’s brand could be given top billing gave Osbourne exactly the kind of impressive retort needed to silence his critics and counter Sabbath’s own confident rebirth behind Dio. Blizzard didn’t even gain a U.S. release until March 1981. But it would ultimately win the marathon, selling in excess of 5 million copies worldwide.

Ironically, just weeks after the album’s European release, yet still months away from its arrival in America, Osbourne’s new band was already hard at work recording its follow-up, “Diary of a Madman”.

Blizzard of Ozz — the album — went down as a heavy metal classic. Its songs have remained the very backbone of Osbourne’s solo career, well beyond Rhoads’ tragic death in 1982,

From the album “Temporary Monument” out now on Woodsist Records. “Our hometown has been buried under an avalanche of condos and pointless businesses catering to the newly rich. Noise complaints shut down our shows and pull the plug on countless DIY venues. The places where we lived are being torn down; the rent keeps climbing up. Born too soon or too late, the recession’s effect on our youth was as invisible as it it was profound.

WOOLEN MEN – TEMPORARY MONUMENT – LP

Woolen Men are a band from Portland, OR that play lo-fi jams anybody with ears can get down with. Their video for “Temporary Monument” directed by Lawton Browning shows a compilation of very cool monument videos from different places around the world. It’s a strange dichotomy dichotomy; the bouncy, fun kind of rock of Woolen Men cast against the large shadows of these giant statues in Budapest and Lima, Even though the track is fun, maybe it all digs at a deeper point: are our human bodies just temporary monuments for life? The video seems to suggest that, going from all these huge statues and people looking at them to a large grave site filled with tombstones and markers. The singer yells “Temporary Monument” while these shots happen. Who said you can’t be thoughtful and have fun to a song? Music today is rendered powerless — white noise made in the echo chamber, for the great Smooth Face that gazes once and moves on. So here it comes, . The internet is sham: Temporary Monument, we made it for ourselves.

Universal Music will follow-up this year’s “Sparkle in the Rain” box set with a new Simple Minds super deluxe edition, this time a six-disc exploration of the album that came next, 1985’s “Once Upon A Time”.

Originally released in October 1985, and coming hot on the heels of the global smash ‘(Don’t You) Forget About Me’,‘Once Upon A Time’ was to prove the album that propelled Simple Minds to stratospheric heights of artistic and commercial success.

Definitely one of the best-loved tracks from the mighty ‘Once Upon A Time’, ‘Alive And Kicking’ was released as a single thirty years ago in September 1985.

It went on to become one of the band’s biggest hits, reaching the Top Ten all around the world.

The Jimmy Iovine and Bob Clearmountain produced long-player was a major commercial success. It spawned four top twenty singles in Britain and reached the top ten in America and hit the top spot in the UK.

This new super deluxe edition – released 30 years after the original – is a 5CD+DVD set and has two bonus CDs packed with B-sides, remixes and edits including three previously unreleased remixes of Alive and Kicking and an unheard alternative edit of Sanctify Yourself. Although US number one Don’t You (Forget About Me) wasn’t featured on the original record, the seven-inch and twelve inch versions are present and correct on disc two of this set.

The Live in the City of Light double live album also forms part of this new set, filling discs four and five. Originally released in 1987, this was mostly recorded in Paris in 1986 on the Once Upon A Time tour.

Disc six is a DVD-A/V that features a hi-res 96/24 5.1 surround sound mix of the album that has previously been released on standalone DVD-A in 2005. The DVD also includes promo videos for all the singles and Don’t You (Forget About Me).

All the music on the CDs has been newly remastered and this set comes with a 36-page booklet that includes rare photos, new interviews with Jim Kerr and Charlie Burchill and a track-by-track guide. A 2CD deluxe is also available as well as a vinyl LP edition.

The Once Upon A Time super deluxe edition box set is released on 4th December 2015.

The never-released album from 1972, which was pressed on a few acetates. Some acetates were sold, for a lot of money, a couple of years ago, and….surfaced on bootleg CD after a while. The songs are either completely different takes (like “Have You Seen Your Mother Baby”), or different mixes than the official versions (from Metamophosis).

The planned follow-up to Hot Rocks was to be titled Necrophilia, and was to have the tracks selected by the unpredictable Andrew Loog Oldham. A gatefold sleeve was designed by Fabio Nicoli using photography by the Stones‘ official photographer from the sixties, Gered Mankowitz.
Only an extremly limited number had been produced when, rumour has it, Oldham and Allen Klein had a major disagreement over Oldham’s eclectic track selection, which included controversial songs such as “Andrews Blues” and “Pay Your Dues” (the alternate version of Street Fighting Man).

After splitting from Big Brother and the Holding Company, Joplin formed a new band , the Kozmic Blues Band, composed of session musicians like keyboardist Stephen Ryder as well as Big Brother and the Holding Company guitarist Sam Andrew and thefuture Full Tilt Boogie Band bassist Brad Campbell. The band was influenced by the Rhythm and Blues Style of The Stax Volt (R&B) bands of the 1960s, as exemplified by Otis Reading and the Barkays. The Stax-Volt R&B sound was typified by the use of horns and had a more bluesy, funky, soul, pop-oriented sound than most of the hard-rock psychedelic bands of the period. By early 1969, Joplin was allegedly shooting at least $200 worth of heroin per day, although efforts were made to keep her clean during the recording of I Got Dem Ol’ Kozmic Blues Again Mama!. Gabriel Mekler, who produced the Kozmic Blues, told publicist-turned-biographer Myra Friedman after Joplin’s death that the singer had lived in his house during the June 1969 recording sessions at his insistence so he could keep her away from drugs and her drug-using friends.

Janis Joplin’s appearances with the Kozmic Blues Band in Europe were released in cinemas in the documentary Janis,  Joplin performed with Tom Jones on his own television show in late 1969.

I Got Dem Ol’ Kozmic Blues Again Mama!

The Kozmic Blues album, released  on 11th September 1969, was certified gold later that year, but did not match the success of Cheap Thrills. Reviews of the new group were mixed. However, the recording quality and engineering of the record as well as the musicianship were considered superior to her previous releases, and some music critics argued that the band was working in a much more constructive way to support Joplin’s sensational vocal talents.

Columbia Records released “Kozmic Blues“ as a single, and a live rendition of “Raise Your Hand” was released in Germany and became a top ten hit there. Containing other hits like “Try (Just a Little Bit Harder)”, “To Love Somebody“, and “Little Girl Blue“, I Got Dem Ol’ Kozmic Blues Again Mama!

The Wild, the Innocent & the E Street Shuffle is the second studio album by American singer-songwriter Bruce Springsteen, released on September 11th, 1973, by Columbia Records. It was recorded by Springsteen with the E Street Band at 914 Sound Studios in Blauvelt, New York. The album includes the song “Rosalita (Come Out Tonight)“, the band’s most-used set-closing song for the first 10 years of its career.

As with Bruce Springsteen’s first album released earlier in the year, The Wild, the Innocent & the E Street Shuffle was well-received critically but had little commercial success at the time. However, once Springsteen achieved popularity with the album Born To Run , several songs from this album became popular FM radio airplay and concert favorites. On November 7th, 2009, Springsteen and the E Street Band played the album in its entirety for the first time ever in a concert at Madison Square Gardens and in Brisbane Australia,

The E Street Band is known to have taken its name from keyboard player David Sancious home in Belmar New Jersey. The back cover photo on the album has the six band members standing in a doorway. The picture was of an antique store on Sairs Ave in the West End section of Long Branch, New Jersey.

Springsteen had developed a renewed passion for full-band rock ‘n’ roll” when he began to record The Wild, the Innocent & the E Street Shuffle in May 1973. The album departed from the folk influences of Springsteen’s 1973 debut album Greetings from Asbury Park, N.J. and was instead characterized by “a grand fusion of nostalgic rock ‘n’ roll and soulful R&B”.

Springsteen recorded many songs for this album; at least eleven are known not to have made the final cut. Out of those eleven, “Zero and Blind Terry”, “Thundercrack”, “Seaside Bar Song” and “Santa Ana” were released on the Box set Tracks , whereas The Fever a song which had also been recorded by Southside Johnny,  was released on 18 Tracks.

songs from the album’s recording sessions remain officially unreleased:

  • “Evacuation of the West”. Recorded without Sancious and with no overdubs. It circulates in several bootlegs.
  • “Phantoms” (aka “Over the Hills of St George”). An early version of “Zero and Blind Terry”. It circulates in the bootleg Deep Down in the Vaults.
  • “Fire on the Wing”. Considered for inclusion in Tracks. The song remains uncirculated.
  • “New York Song”. An early version of “New York City Serenade”, which also included parts of an earlier song called “Vibes Man”. The song remains uncirculated.
  • “Secret to the Blues”. Reworking of a previous Springsteen song called “The Band’s Just Boppin’ the Blues”. The song remains uncirculated.
  • “Angel’s Blues” (aka “She So Fine” or “Ride On Sweet William”). Another uncirculated song.

“The Magdalene” is taken from the forthcoming new album by Foxing titled “Dealer” will be out this Fall on Triple Crown Records.  This St. Louis quintet Foxing emerged from the recent emo resurgence as a clear front runner that could endure the waning fad continue to contribute meaningful material.  their breakthrough “the Albatross” juxtaposed moments of agitation with sustained introspective passages, a formula that will prove beneficial for a young band given ample time to hone their craft.

With the success of Foxing’s 2013 debut effort the Albatross spilled over well into the following year with its blend of cinematic post-rock and eclectic post-hardcore resonated with a surging fan base and earned them a record deal with Triple Crown Records who reissued the Albatross and will release the band’s sophomore album, Dealer, due out october 30th.

“The Magdalene,” is the first single pulled from Dealer, collectively internalizes the aggression that permeated their earlier work and presents a vunerable confessional about the psychological trauma of sexual guilt stemming from a religious upbringing.  dual guitar lines weave delicately through Conor Murphy’s vocal narrative, with layers of decayed delay washing over the song’s texture before coalescing into a beautiful, heart-wrenching coda powered by a surging rhythm section.

foxing dealer cover

This UK and European tour in support of Tigers Jaw is a chance for Foxing to see out the era of ‘The Albatross’ – an album countless UK fans have been calling for them to tour here since it came out in 2013 – while also strictly looking ahead to ‘Dealer’ and the future. Speaking to the band on only their second night on the continent, they’re already picking up differences between the crowds and communities this side of the Atlantic,

“It was very strange for us last night. The crowds here actually listen to what you’re saying in between songs, and want to hear about your experiences in their town, where in America you have to shout to get a word in! We’re still trying to get to grips with the way things work over here, but so many of our friends in bands have toured here and have an extremely high opinion of the scene.”
