Portland’s Faustina Masigat has a background in traditional music, having spent her college years studying and learning in a rigorous training program. It was when she left that behind, though, that the songwriter, vocalist, and instrumentalist was truly able to find her own voice. After a couple years of writing and reflecting, Masigat is preparing to share that voice with the wider world with her forthcoming self-titled debut album.

Ahead of the album’s release, Masigat has shared a new song, “Stay With Me.” A simply rendered love song, “Stay With Me” showcases Masigat’s delicate vocals, contemplative songwriting, and affection for the intimacy brought forth from a worn-out guitar or an imperfect take. Throughout the song, player Tucker Jackson answers Masigat’s voice with ethereal pedal steel.

“’Stay With Me’ was my attempt at writing a love song, in the very traditional sense,” Masigat says. “It was originally recorded as a duet, but over time it made less and less sense conceptually to have any vocals other than my own on the album. Ben Nugent, who mixed the record, encouraged me to keep the songs self contained in this way, to dig into that intimacy instead of obscuring it.”

For Faustina Masigat, Masigat enlisted Portland’s Ryan Lewis, Ben Nugent, and Timothy Stollenwerk to bring these new tunes to life in the studio. The album is out April 6th via Mama Bird Recording Co.

Speedy Ortiz  have announced their first release in over two years, and their first proper full-length since 2015’s Foil Deer. “Twerp Verse” is out on April 27th via Carpark Records, and in tandem with their new album’s announcement, Sadie Dupuis and company have also shared the video for synths and sardonic lead single “Lucky 88,” in which Dupuis declares, “I don’t care anymore.”

Dupuis explained the clever, colorful and ultimately optimistic video’s conception in a statement:

For the video, we wanted something evil, glossy, cynical, and camp. director Emily Yoshida came up with a concept that addresses our reliance on technology and apps that’s so absorbing, it’s hard to engage with the outside world, even when it is literally being consumed by slime (and, hello, global warming, melting ice, coral bleaching, impending heat death, make no mistake, it is being consumed by slime).

Soon after Speedy Ortiz assembled in Brooklyn in the fall of 2016 and recorded what they thought was their third album, Election Day happened, and the band knew they had to scrap what they had done, shifting their focus from the personal to the political. “The songs on the album that were strictly personal or lovey dovey just didn’t mean anything to me anymore that’s not the kind of music I’ve found healing or motivating in the past few years, and I was surprised I’d written so much of it,” Dupuis recalls. “Social politics and protest have been a part of our music from day one, and I didn’t want to stop doing that on this album.” Four months and many new songs later, the result was Twerp Verse, which a press release describes as a “urgent, taught and pointedly witty” album that’s “tuned smartly to the political opacity of the present.” The album’s consonant title, too, is a nod to the importance of speaking out: “I call it a ‘twerp verse’ when a musician guests on a track and says something totally outlandish—like a Lil Wayne verse—but it becomes the most crucial part,” Dupuis explains. “I like ‘twerp’ as a diss, but in this meaning, the twerp is doing a service—shaking things up by being bold, not complacent, never silent.”

Speedy Ortiz  The band, made up of Dupuis on guitars, vocals and synths, Darl Ferm on bass and Mike Falcone on drums, is now joined by supporting guitarist Andy Molholt (of psych-pop act Laser Background).

“Lucky 88” is the first single from Speedy Ortiz’s forthcoming album, “Twerp Verse,” out April 27th on Carpark Records.,

Mount Eerie, the project of Phil Elverum (who used to record as The Microphones), is releasing a new album, Now Only, on March 16th via P.W. Elverum & Sun. He previously shared its first single, the 11-minute long “Distortion” . Now there is another song from the album, “Tintin in Tibet,” which opens the album. It is sung to his late wife, about when they first met and when their romance was new.

Mount Eerie released an acclaimed album, “A Crow Looked At Me”, last March via Elverum’s own label, P.W. Elverum & Sun. The album was written after his wife, Geneviève Elverum (née Gosselin), passed away in July 2016 after losing her fight with pancreatic cancer. It was among our and many others Top Albums of 2017 . “Now Only” is due out only a year after A Crow Looked At Me.

Geneviève was a musician and comic book artist who had recorded as both Woelv and Ô Paon. Geneviève was diagnosed with inoperable, stage four pancreatic cancer just four months after giving birth to their daughter and died a year later, leaving Elverum to raise their infant daughter on his own. Based on “Distortion,” the album is still understandably about Geneviève. But “Distortion” also tells a tale of a 23-year-old Elverum having a pregnancy scare when he definitely wasn’t ready to have kids. He also sings about attending his great grandfather’s funeral, the first dead body he saw in person, among other things in the seemingly autobiographical track.

A previous press release described Now Only as such: “Now Only is a continuation and deepening of the themes presented on that album. Elverum further explores that style of direct, unadorned lyrical writing, with further ruminations on his wifes death and their life together, the effects of the sudden success of these intimate songs, and the concept of remembrance.”

This is the first song on “Now Only” by Mount Eerie

A few years ago, Black Moth Super Rainbow, were the trippy, hallucinatory psych outfit led by producer Tobacco, dropped SeeFu Lilac, a surprise album said to be “neon flavored outtakes from a 6th album that doesn’t yet exist.” Well, good news: It does now, because the band just announced Panic Blooms, its first proper LP since 2012’s Cobra Juicy. Expect it on May 4th .

A press release announcing the album describes it as an “f-ed up and bleeding account of depression and the shadow side of human frailty,” saying that “never before has Tobacco been so raw or direct in his lyrics.” You can hear it in Panic Blooms‘ lead single and closer, “Mr No One”, a hypnotic, synth-driven track that yearns for sunshine and simplicity. It’s a cut that wouldn’t have been out of place in Twin Peaks‘ roadhouse; no amount of vocoder can hide the yearning in Tobacco’s dreamy vocals

Black Moth Super Rainbow will also release the song as a 7-inch single on March 16th. You’ll find “Mr No One” on side A and two collaborative tracks between Tobacco and Ariel Pink—”Willing & Able” and “Bogalusa”—on side B. It won’t be sold online, and only 1,000 copies are being farmed out to record stores

The debut album due out on March 30th, 2018 On Infectious Music containing the singles  ‘CELEBRATION OF A DISEASE’  & ‘GIBRALTAR APE’ plus new single ‘ARMS OF PLEONEXIA’

The new single ‘Arms Of Pleonexia’, was premiered on Radio 1 by Huw Stephens, ‘Nihilistic Glamour Shots’ is the debut album from Manchester band Cabbage,  released 30th March 2018 on Infectious Music. Produced by James Skelly and Rich Turvey (Blossoms, The Coral, She Drew The Gun) at Parr Street Studios in Liverpool,
‘Nihilistic Glamour Shots’ is an album that confirms Cabbage as one of the most nuanced bands in years. Equally drawn to socialist politics and mucking about, they’re devotees of both big choruses and anarchic totems like GG Allin, Genesis P Orridge and Butthole Surfers. It’s a mixture writ large throughout ‘Nihilistic Glamour Shots’, from the frenetic opening salvo of ‘Preach To The Converted’, ‘Arms Of Pleonexia’ and ‘Molotov Alcopop’, via ‘Perdurabo’s swampy blues and wild funk of ‘Exhibit A’ to the devastating seven-minute finale ‘Subhuman 2.0’. It’s hard to think of another band who could write a magnificently infectious two-minute frantic anthem and then call it ‘Obligatory Castration’. Only two album tracks have been heard before, the BBC6 Music playlisted singles ‘Celebration Of A Disease’ and ‘Gibraltar Ape’. Indeed, the savagely brilliant ‘Postmodernist Caligula’ was written and recorded in a matter of days at the end of the album recording sessions.

While it broadens Cabbage’s sound further still from their already eclectic previous five EPs, ‘Nihilistic Glamour Shots’ also does a superb job of capturing the raw energy of their freewheeling live shows. The band have kept the gigs fresh partly by theming each tour, with autumn’s Healing Brexit Towns Experiment living up to its name.

“The video is an opportunist representation of how our simplistic, questionable minds view the odious backdrop of the arms trade and the delicate situation of political control that arises tensions all over the world. Catch 22 in layman’s terms. The tensions not only exist in public safety and international bravado but is increasingly called upon in culture which reflects in our song and video. Lee and Joe, although their hairlines and blemishes are in high definition, are metaphorical states. With such institutions controlled by excessive greed, this inevitably leads to decisions that have huge detrimental effect. There are no winners in the arms trade. There are no winners in the video.”

Totally Mild’s second album, Her, is a shiny, perfect slab of indie pop, with the self-confessional lyrics and vocals of lead singer Elizabeth Mitchell. Here’s what Mitchell said about the album:

“Her is a record of failure and victory, new desire, stale romance, queer domesticity and what comes when the party is over. I was torn between a new domestic life and the impulse to tear it all away with bad choices. I fell in love, but I wrestled for independence. I was always trying to prove that I didn’t need anyone; my wife, my friends, my band. Her is a document of a woman struggling with the idea of potential. We are told that we could be limitless, but we wrestle with unseen personal and structural walls.”

recorded Live in the studio performance of the new Totally Mild single “Lucky Stars”. The new Totally Mild album Her is out February 23rd on pink or black vinyl,

We have it on a translucent green vinyl, and it’s among our favorite albums of 2018 so far.

NYC’s Lake Ruth was formed in 2015 by multi-instrumentalist Hewson Chen of The New Lines, drummer Matt Schulz (Holy Fuck / Enon / SAVAK) and vocalist Allison Brice (The Eighteenth Day Of May, The Silver Abduction).

Their debut LP, Actual Entity, was released in 2016 on The Great Pop Supplement (UK). A second album, Birds of America, is due February 2018 on Feral Child (UK).  Lake Ruth have crafted an absolutely radiant follow up to their brilliant debut album. Each track is like a perfectly cut gemstone, and the ten songs make up an album that is a joy to listen to from start to finish ! Get hold of the vinyl if you can, its a rare thing to find an album this perfect

last year we were reintroduced to the world of Les Autres, an excellent French indie rock band from the ’90s, via a compilation entitled “Backwards”. Now, we’re happy to present the debut album (after a couple self-released digital-only EPs) from Megrim, which is the new project of that older band’s guitarist/vocalist, Olivier Doreille. Like Les Autres, comparisons can be drawn to early ’90s contemporaries such as Lorelei and Hood, but Megrim’s sound is a bit more fleshed out, at times reminding me a lot of early Death Cab For Cutie and Nada Surf. Their songs are sometimes driving, other times melancholic, but always interesting, making for a well-rounded and rewarding album to listen to.

Just over a year after releasing their lauded debut LP, Yoncalla, Yumi Zouma return with Willowbank, the band’s sophomore album.

For the making of Willowbank, Yumi Zouma’s members — Charlie Ryder, Josh Burgess, Christie Simpson and Sam Perry settled on a plan to reunite for the New Zealand summer. To complete what would become their first significant work written and recorded entirely in their home country, they rented a studio in Christchurch’s semi-demolished CBD, on one of the few remaining blocks that still characterizes the city from before it was destroyed by a series of earthquakes. “It was as though there was a brief pause in all of our lives and we finally felt like a band from New Zealand,” said Burgess. “We were on home turf and creating from a place that felt fundamentally natural.”

They scare me… every release since EP I has been literal perfection, but somehow they continue to get BETTER AND BETTER with each one

When you know it’s there, the feeling of rootedness is undeniable on Willowbank. Being connected to their origins on the bottom of the earth allowed the band’s members to craft another essential chapter in the Yumi Zouma storybook.

Released October 6th, 2017
