OK, so there’s this one other longstanding Texas band that gave us a great album in 2014. Before Centro-matic released “Take Pride in Your Long Odds,” they announced that the album would be their last, and next week, they will play their final shows at Dan’s Silverleaf in their hometown of Denton. All three are sold out — a fitting farewell to a band that’s made some of the weirdest, most distinctive rock music we’ve heard over the last 20 years. “Take Pride” doesn’t break their strange mold. It starts with a slow, wordless title song that sounds like exactly what it should: a stately march into new beginnings. Not everyone falls under the Centro-matic spell, but those who do are generally hooked for life. Our friend Jay even sports a T-shirt that says, “Centro-matic is better than your favorite band.” If “Long Odds” is your introduction to Centro-matic, you may never again have the chance to see them live, but you’ll have a wonderful catalog of great music — all of it anchored by the ragged beauty of Will Johnson’s voice

ABRAM SHOOK – ” Everybody’s Talkin ” Fred Neil Cover

Austin based Musician and traveller Abram Shook, and this breezy summery cover from the midnight Cowboy movie,
Everybody’s Talkin’” is a folk rock song written and originally released by Fred Neil in 1966. A version of the song performed by Harry Nilsson became a global success in 1969, reaching No2 on the Billboard chart, plus winning a Grammy after it was featured on the soundtrack of the film “Midnight Cowboy“. The song, which describes the singer’s desire to retreat from other people to the ocean, is among the most famous works of both artists, and has been covered by many other notable performers.
The song was first released on Neil’s second album, 1966’s self-titled Fred Neil. It was composed towards the end of the session, after Neil had become anxious to wrap the album so he could return to his home in Miami, Florida. Manager Herb Cohen promised that if Neil wrote and recorded a final track, he could go. “Everybody’s Talkin'”, recorded in one take, was the result.

Austin’s own Abram Shook put out the immensely pleasing “Sun Marquee” back in January, and it’s been a favourite of mine since. It’s a kind of breezy, relaxed pop music that’s impossible to not get lost in. Austin-based musician Abram Shook has done his fair share of wandering the world, searching for a spiritual and a literal home. From road trips through South America to surfing excursions in Indonesia, he’s been fortunate to have the opportunity to absorb more of the world’s cultures first-hand than many of us ever will. After leaving Santa Cruz, California where he grew up and studied jazz, Shook spent several years in Portland and Boston playing in numerous bands, Turning to traveling as a means to quell his existential dread, eventually landed him in Austin, TX, where he’s been part of the city’s rich creative community for over 8 years. Though the music community in Austin is no substitute for the briny air and patient West Coast beaches he still longs for, its vitality and creativity still manage to nourish the soul.

Abram Shook’s solo debut, “Sun Marquee” breathes with the lungs of a man that finally found a new place to call home. Propelled by Shook’s impeccable bass groove, and inspired by artists like Shuggie Otis, Serge Gainsbourge, and Chico Buarque, Sun Marquee distills lessons learned and questions unanswered into an accessible collection of pop songs.

The DEAD SPACE – ” Behind The Wall “

If you are even the slightest fan of post-punk, then you need The Dead Space’s new album “Faker” in your life. There’s not a track on it that isn’t rad.
Am I the only person that’s about to be poleaxed by The Dead Space’s long-awaited debut album, ‘Faker’, expertly recorded by Ian Rundell. The trio of bassist/vocalist Quin Galavis, guitarist Garrett Hadden and drummer Jenny Arthur have been honing their craft in Austin, TX since high school, but after a 7” single on Hadden’s excellent Thread Pull label (Flesh Lights, Foreign Mothers), a song on the second ‘Casual Victim Pile’ compilation, the moment is long overdue for The Dead Space to put-it-all-together. And that’s exactly what they’ve done —this is a band whose blend of tension, fragility and genuine muscle —certainly in the spirit of their influences like Joy Division, Bauhaus and Swans .
