SLAVES – ” The Hunter “

Royal Blood showed us how much noise can be extracted from a two-piece duo. London based Garage band Slaves – not to be confused with the Californian rockers of the same name – are Isaac Holman and Laurie Vincent: one shouts and bangs the drums standing up, the other coaxes great, fat metal riffs from his guitar. They look like two overgrown truants from the rough part of town, but if you shut your eyes this is what the Black Keys might have sounded like had they been raised on Shane Meadows films – wry, suburban disaffection, like Sleaford Mods with less swearing; a hint of Madness and a bit of vaudeville too (“Hello, how’s Amelia? Is she still ugly?” – How’s Amelia). New punk sensations tend to burn out quickly but we think Slaves’ wit will carry them through. They have a song called Where’s Your Car Debbie?, inspired by a true event.

Desperate Journalist exude cool.  powerful, urgent female vocals, and sophisticated, layered guitar work, in the image of Savages,  the new single “Control” previewed yesterday the new single from Londoners Desperate Journalist, whom are fast rising to become one of our favourite bands of the moment. Swooping in on a tangle of Rob Hardy’s 12 string arpeggio assault, cavernous drums and dexterous baselines, Detailing a relationship that’s seemingly turned into a literal battle of wills, Jo Bevan’s knowing vocal tone entrances and then pierces: she possesses that rare ability to play with you, to ironically dismiss(“What a fantastic growth rate/Darling, go fill up your plate”) artfully reworking phrases that in the hands of some could sound clumsy but in hers sound positively weighty, powerfully affecting and ultimately self affirming(“It’s like a hole in your head/I’m a thoroughbred”).

While the backing is sinuous and widescreen, atmospheric yet pulsing, faintly reminiscent of the ghosts 80s and 90s grandest indie sounds but never in awe of their heroes. This beauty cowers, creeps and then pounces on you when you aren’t looking, the chorus firing off boldly, vigorously and quite thrillingly with a fearsome melodic punch that is sadly lacking in most bands of today. Desperate Journalist might have been one of my tips for 2014, but their sumptuous forthcoming self titled debut album(which you can stream below) makes them firmly approved for 2015 .

This track really has the feel of the early Smiths sound,  a song that will certainly stick in your head, in a good way. Their debut album is due out 26th January 2015 on Fierce Panda Records. The band are playing in Nottingham 13th December

London psychedelic act Fat White Family have kept their clothes on long enough to make the new “Is It Raining In Your Mouth” video. The heavily-saturated and colorful video comes from the band’s Champagne Holocaust LP, out now via Fat Possum Records. Check it out above, and look for the band on the road for the NME Awards tour. Be prepared to see lots of skin.

Death in Texas From post-rock to trip-hop and everything in between, the duo manage to combine their eclectic influences to create a compelling album. Atmospheric and adventurous, the record explores disenchantment, apathy and ambition
this London based Kiwi expats released their first prog-heavy. After relentless gigging in London and the UK, a string of singles were released eventuating into the EP “PLUCK” in 2013. Exhausted with the live scene they retreated into their home studio for a year, writing and producing the music that would become their first album. “Pause Between Breaths” is a clear graduation from their former sound and approach.
Death in Texas say:
“We wanted to create something that was honest, that we could be proud of in a few years time. This album is intended to be experienced as a whole: to sit down, read the lyrics, look at the artwork, be fully immersed as we all used to with albums when we were young. Pause Between Breaths is about stopping the constant buzz and finding a space to be still.”

Showing incredible patience, each step taken from Vaults feels impeccably thought through. The group’s take on electronic pop – languid, emotive, future-minded – has already brought them acclaim, with fans thronging to support a group able to sell out London’s ICA while still almost unknown elsewhere.

New EP ‘Vultures’ could well be a breakthrough moment. Due for release on December 1st, the four track EP features new material and a specially commissioned remix from Maya Jane Coles.

Ahead of this, Vaults have placed the title cut online. Opening with tinkling notes of piano, there’s a grandness, an ambition to everything Vaults place their name against. a band set to be a huge favourite for the forthcoming new year and maybe a few festival slots.

I just so love this Singer Songwriter from London, he has such an amazing vocal and this new track from the up and coming UK Luke Sital-Singh; ‘Tornado Town’ is a tender and lovelorn choice cut from his forthcoming Tornadoes EP, which is out 3rd November on Parlophone. This session finds the young musician up on a London rooftop, solely strumming on his acoustic guitar, offering an intense and personal take on the track.

Winter’s upon us and while nothing can slow the forthcoming cold nights and frosty mornings and dark days, Robyn Sherwell’s new single is an excellent pick-me-up. The London-based singer packs rumbling percussion, lush, irresistible vocals, and a head-bobbing pop melody into “Islander.” Inspired by her days growing up in island of Guernsey the groovy three-minute track sounds like a tribal dance party that lasts til sunrise .it’s exactly the type of sound that you need to get through the winter, Sherwell says of the song,

“The song was written in 2013 and recorded in David Kosten’s studio in West London that year. I’ve always been a bit fixated on the idea of home and belonging. My family moved around a far bit when I was small and eventually settled in Guernsey which is a pretty unique place to grow up. The song references the island’s past and explores that feeling of knowing a place well, knowing it is part of you, but also the conflict of needing to get away from what you know so well too. It was written in minutes, almost Just banging drums and vocals in the first instance, and that’s still the basic vibe. I wasn’t sure if it was really anything special until David heard my rough demo and insisted it should go on the record.”
