A concept album to end all concept albums, King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard’s new album “Murder Of The Universe” is a face-melting musical assault concerned with the downfall of man and the death of the planet. Their tenth album in five dizzying years, it hinges on three distinct chapters throughout which snippets of their breakthrough records I’m In Your Mind Fuzz and Nonagon Infinitye merge in ghostly shadow – and it’s available for human consumption now.

“a batshit, brilliant new album” – New York Observer
“A decidedly dark reflection of today’s angst and insanity. There is a bright side however: given its harrowing descriptions of terror and upheaval, it makes the real world seem tame by comparison.” –Paste

King Gizzard and The Lizard Wizard -Murder Of The Universe

Showing no signs of slowing down, Geelong’s King Gizzard and The Lizard Wizard release Murder Of The Universe, the second of their five albums set for release in 2017. Broken down into 3 distinct ‘chapters’, the track listing of the sprawling 21-track album, which is concerned with the downfall of man and the death of the planet. The album was recorded at Flightless HQ in East Brunswick, Melbourne Australia in early 2017 and produced by the band’s Stu Mackenzie. Lit by thunderclaps and lightning, Murder Of The Universe inhabits a sonic landscape of death, decay, ossification, fossilisation, rebirth. It is a place occupied by wandering shape-shifting beasts, bleeding skies, pools of blood, great fires and mushroom clouds; a planet rent asunder by conflict. A disorientating experience, the album hinges on three distinct sections that rise from larval beds, and whose lyrics should be carved in stone, squeezed from moss, discovered in ancient runes. And all the while a passing cast of characters imbue the tale with both human and non-human emotions. Snippets of earlier recordings breakthrough collection I’m In Your Mind Fuzz and Nonagon Infinity resurface throughout like ghostly shadow form to haunt their latest sound. In years to come King Gizzard and The Lizard Wizard will be judged not by their separate albums, but by a body of work where themes, melodies, motifs, riffs and ideas resurface and recur, each album peeling back a layer of the onion to glimpse at past and future alike.

Big Thief  – Capacity

The trails that Brooklyn’s Big Thief – Adrianne Lenker (guitar, vocals), Buck Meek (guitar), Max Oleartchik (bass), and James Krivchenia (drums) – take us down on Capacity, the band’s highly anticipated second record out on Saddle Creek Records, are overgrown with the wilderness of pumping souls. After last year’s stunning Masterpiece, Capacity was recorded in a snowy winter nest in upstate New York at Outlier Studio with producer Andrew Sarlo. The album jumps right into lives marked up and nipped in surprisingly swift fashion. They are peopled and unpeopled, spooked and soothed, regenerating back into a state where they can once again be vulnerable. Lenker’s songs introduce us to a gallery of multifacted women and deal with the complicated matters of identity — at once dangerous and curious, though never unbelievable. Lenker shows us the gentle side of being ripped open. Tricked into love, done in and then witnessing the second act of pulling oneself back together to prepare for it to all happen again, but this time to a sturdier soul, one who is going to take the punches better than ever before and deal some jabs and roundhouses of their own.The album is thick with raw, un-doctored beauty: most of the songs on Capacity were played for the first time in the studio and were recorded the same day. “There is a darker darkness and a lighter light on this album,” Lenker explains. “The songs search for a deeper level of self-acceptance, to embrace the world within and without. I think Masterpiece began that process, as a reaction from inside the pain, whereas I feel Capacity examines the pain from the outside.”

It features the Wilco bandleader performing eleven of his own songs, culled from the Wilco catalog as well as from side-projects Loose Fur and Golden Smog, in a solo acoustic setting. Recorded at Tweedy’s Chicago recording studio The Loft, Together At Last showcases Tweedy’s accomplished and intricate guitar playing and his expressive, plaintive voice, and while audiences have experienced Tweedy live onstage as a solo performer for years, this is the first studio recording of its kind for the acclaimed musician.

The Deslondes  – Hurry Home

The Deslondes are a five-piece band from New Orleans. In the time between the release of their self-titled debut and new sophomore album, Hurry Home, The Deslondes have toured the world and drawn critical acclaim for their studied and inventive take on New Orleans country and R&B. Hurry Home represents a sonic shift from the country-folk of their debut to a sometimes-psychedelic, electrified gospel-soul sound, with a stronger emphasis on organ and electric guitar. The band split up songwriting and lead vocal duties among its five members, continuing its democratic ethos and musical versatility. The sound may continue to draw comparisons to the country-funkiness of The Band, but The Deslondes were equally inspired by the sound of early Sun Records, the punchy rock and roll of VU-era Velvet Underground and the experimental pop of Joe Meek. Perhaps most importantly, Hurry Home is the sound of a band that understands the history of American music, but is deftly finding their own contemporary approach.

King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard were voted  Act Of The Year for many, many good reasons – including the blistering pace at which they release music. And as if to prove our point completely, the guys have released one final single for 2016 (we assume!), the stomping ‘Nuclear Fusion’.

This killer track marks the second single from forthcoming album Flying Microtonal Banana. The album sees King Gizzard experience in microtonal tuning, which uses intervals smaller than a semitone, and is more common in Eastern-influenced music.

“Earlier this year we started experimenting with a custom microtonal guitar our
friend Zak made for Stu,” drummer Eric Moore says of the new record. “The guitar was modified to play in 24-TET tuning and could only be played with other microtonal instruments. The record features the modified electric guitars, basses, keyboards and harmonica as well as a turkish horn called a Zurna.”

The album is out February 24th 2017.

King Gizz Just Dropped The First Single From Their Next Album

King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard have wasted no time getting back in action after their very recent album Nonagon Infinity, announcing their next album Flying Microtonal Banana and dropping the first single, ‘Rattlesnake’.

In true King Gizzard style, the track comes complete with a bonkers video clip courtesy of Jason Galea, another eye-searing collage of trippy digital effects. The track itself barrels along for almost eight minutes, driven by an insistent beat and sharp, robotic vox.

The record itself will be dropping on February 24th, the band have their own personal festival Gizzfest, coming up later this month in Australia. Flying Microtonal Banana is King Gizzard’s first-ever experience in microtonal tuning, which features intervals smaller than a semitone and not found in customary Western tuning octaves.

THE JAYHAWKS – PAGING MR PROUST

Produced by REM guitarist Peter Buck, Tucker Martine, and Gary Louris, this is the first Jayhawks album since 2011’s ‘Mockingbird Time’ and is a return to the lineup of the band that made ‘Rainy Day Music’ in 2003 – the core band of Gary Louris, Marc Perlman, Tim O’Reagan, and Karen Grotberg. “It’s the start of a brand new adventure.” sings Gary Louris on ‘Quiet Corners and Empty Spaces’, the opening track on The Jayhawks‘ new album ‘Paging Mr. Proust’. The band formed in Minneapolis in 1985 and the album shows their commitment to adventure and forward motion which makes this collection of songs exciting and instantly memorable.

 john doe - the westerner

John Doe – The Westerner CD/LP (Cool Rock)

John Doe calls his new album The Westerner his “psychedelic soul record from the Arizona desert.” The album features 10 new tracks from Doe with guest appearances from Chan Marshall of Cat Power, Debbie Harry of Blondie, Cindy Wasserman of Dead Rock West and Tom Brosseau. The Westerner was produced by Howe Gelb (Neko Case, M. Ward), Dave Way (Fiona Apple) and Doe. The album’s artwork was designed by Shepard Fairey and Aaron Huey to support Native American rights via a campaign called Protect The Sacred, with additional photography by Jim Herrington. Of the album Doe says, “The Westerner is dedicated to Michael Blake, author of many books, including Dances With Wolves, who was a scholar and advocate for Native American rights. He was also one of my best friends for over 30 years. Michael taught me how to ride horses (we knocked each other off them several times) and we taught each other about writing, music and art. Many of these songs are about him or use him as the main character. His presence has been with me throughout the making of the record. It’s a wild, spread-out, desert-like life that we’ve lived.”

SUN KIL MOON / JESU – SUN KIL MOON / JESU

KING GIZZARD AND THE LIZARD WIZARD – NONAGON INFINITY

Recording, releasing and touring a couple of albums in 18 months is beyond the realms of comprehensibility for most bands, but then King Gizzard And The Lizard Wizard aren’t ‘most bands’. Forget a couple of albums, Friday April 29th 2016 marks the release of ‘Nonagon Infinity’, their fourth long-player for Heavenly Recordings in a little under a year and a half. Workshy they ain’t! After the acid-flecked cosmic jazz of ‘Quarters’ and the hazy, pastoral, acoustic bliss of ‘Paper Mache Dream Balloon’, with ‘Nonagon Infinity’ the Gizzard once again dive head-long into the gonzo freak-beat frenzy that mark both their Heavenly debut ‘I’m In Your Mind Fuzz’, and their perpetually in motion, double-drummer propelled live show. Recorded by Wayne Gordon, Paul Maybury, Michael Badger and Stu Mackenzie at Daptone Studios in Brooklyn, in keeping with their indefatigable spirit the 9 track album may be the world’s first infinitely looping LP. Each of the nine, complex, blistering tracks on ‘Nonagon Infinity’ seamlessly flows into the next, with the final song linking straight back into the top of the opener like a sonic mobius strip.

THE BARR BROTHERS – ALTA FALLS

Limited Red Vinyl 10″. The Barr Brothers release a new EP called ‘Alta Falls’. The 5 songs on this record are some of their favourite misfits from the ‘Sleeping Operator’ sessions. The cover art is by their elusive friend Madame Gilles, whose posters have been anonymously gracing the telephone poles of Montreal for years.

THE LIMINANAS – MALAMORE

Working in the sweetly swinging tradition of Serge Gainsbourg and the ye-ye sound of the ’60s, the Liminanas have a sound that blends sunny psychedelia with vintage pop. Based out of Perpignan, France, the group is composed of drummer and sometime vocalist Marie Liminana and bassist, organist, and jack-of-all-trades Lionel Liminana, as well as a host of guest vocalists including MU. With its combination of fuzzy organ, half-spoken / half-sung vocals, and vintage production, the band captures the sexy, ultra-hip sound of classic French pop. After releasing a series of singles, the duo released its self-titled debut in 2010 through the Chicago label Trouble in Mind. The band continued to crank out singles, and a second album, ‘Crystal Anis’, followed in the summer of 2012. After taking some time to revamp the Liminanas‘ sound to introduce more elements of French and Italian soundtrack music, the duo returned quickly with its third album for Trouble in Mind. ‘Costa Blanca’ was issued in late 2013. The band are now back with a new release ‘Malamore’

King gizzard with members of The Babe Rainbow filmed and recorded at 14/12/14 Mojos Perth

http://

King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizzard:  these Australians probably played the most shows during CMJ in New York. The band played every venue and every day they could, there was the ‘Gizzard’s knocking people’s socks off, sometimes through sheer momentum and frenetic energy. With  three guitarists, two drummers, two singers and the occasional flute (some of these duties overlapped), they were a psych-garage semi with no brakes down a steep incline. Was there more than one song or just one really long insane one? I can’t remember but it’s an awesome blur. The band are playing the Bodega Social on Wednesday 26th November catch them now before they return to Oz.
