Joseph Arthur will release a new album this autumn titled “Come Back World”, It is his first new solo album in three years, due for release on October 11th. The album features guest appearances by Ben Harper, The Black Keys’ Patrick Carney, Jesse Malin and Greg Dulli, and Joseph calls it “an album about rebirth and survival.” That’s the cover art above, and you can check out the title track right now, he’s crafted his most personal and powerful album to date.

“The interesting parts of our stories aren’t the famous people we meet,” Arthur remarked. Or the times when everything is basically working. Or when we get to lay in comfort with a partner watching Netflix and the world go by.  The interesting parts are when all those things break down and you’re left in isolation to finally deal with the roots of whatever had been thwarting your existence all along. The interesting parts are when the world has turned its back on you and you have turned your back on it or them. When darkness could seemingly swallow you whole if it hasn’t already. When there is no such thing as hope and so you manufacture it from a dream which only angle is to survive. Come Back World is an album about rebirth and survival.”

Peter Buck of R.E.M. and Joseph Arthur recently formed a new band, Arthur Buck, they released a brand-new video for the second track from the forthcoming album  “Are You Electrified?” Arthur Buck will release the self-titled debut album on June 15th via New West Records.

Following their latest track, “I Am The Moment,” their “Are You Electrified?” video sees the duo performing outside on the beach and alongside graffiti-painted walls, with colorful visual effects and flourishes adding to the video and song’s overall trippy feel.

All of the album’s 11 tracks were co-written by the pair and mixed by Tchad Blake (U2, Pearl Jam, The Black Keys). Recorded at Type Foundry Studio in Portland, Ore., the album was produced by Arthur at his studio in Brooklyn, N.Y.

The collaboration came about after the pair met up in Mexico near the end of 2017. Arthur recalled, “My first thought was, ‘Hey, I’ll get Peter to play acoustic guitar on some of the stuff I’m working on!’ So I started showing him songs. But he was like, ‘That’s cool. Now check this out.’ And he started playing chords and whatnot. So I put my guitar down and began singing over his changes, and it was magical. It was easy. And these great songs just started popping out.”

“It was all new songs, and it was spontaneous,” Buck said. “And the great thing about working that way was that it didn’t have to be anything in particular. It was liberated from any expectation. It was free.” Talking about his new bandmate and the album’s lyrics, Buck also added, “Joe is going through that searching period we all go through in life. And those experiences he’s having make this a very forward-looking record, lyrically.”

Joseph Arthur and R.E.M.’s Peter Buck will release their debut LP, Arthur Buck, on June 15th via New West Records. The duo previewed the album with upbeat lead single “I Am The Moment”

“Becoming free/ It’s not as easy as I’d like it to be,” Arthur sings over a lush arrangement that builds with a raw blend of percussion, vocal samples and strings.

The Arthur Buck collaboration originated toward the end of 2017, when the pair rain into each other during respective visits to Todos Santos, Mexico. They wound up pooling their material and crafted eight songs in three days; on the fourth, they performed a show for a small group of locals near Buck’s home. “It was really spontaneous and kind of magical in its own way, as [being in Mexico] we were kind of disconnected from everything,” said Buck

In an interview with NPR, Arthur recalls writing “I Am the Moment” “within the first 10 minutes of seeing each other.” He continued, “Same way as we wrote our other songs. He had the chords and arrangement and I did the top line  except when I sang, ‘I am the moment ,’ he sang back, ‘Waiting for you.’ Peter said, ‘Okay, finish the lyrics so we can play that tonight.’ And I did, and we did. And the crowd completely sang along to it.” Arthur said that the song arose through his ritual of listening to inspirational YouTube clips.

King Gizzard and The Lizard Wizard -Murder Of The Universe

Showing no signs of slowing down, Geelong’s King Gizzard and The Lizard Wizard release Murder Of The Universe, the second of their five albums set for release in 2017. Broken down into 3 distinct ‘chapters’, the track listing of the sprawling 21-track album, which is concerned with the downfall of man and the death of the planet. The album was recorded at Flightless HQ in East Brunswick, Melbourne Australia in early 2017 and produced by the band’s Stu Mackenzie. Lit by thunderclaps and lightning, Murder Of The Universe inhabits a sonic landscape of death, decay, ossification, fossilisation, rebirth. It is a place occupied by wandering shape-shifting beasts, bleeding skies, pools of blood, great fires and mushroom clouds; a planet rent asunder by conflict. A disorientating experience, the album hinges on three distinct sections that rise from larval beds, and whose lyrics should be carved in stone, squeezed from moss, discovered in ancient runes. And all the while a passing cast of characters imbue the tale with both human and non-human emotions. Snippets of earlier recordings breakthrough collection I’m In Your Mind Fuzz and Nonagon Infinity resurface throughout like ghostly shadow form to haunt their latest sound. In years to come King Gizzard and The Lizard Wizard will be judged not by their separate albums, but by a body of work where themes, melodies, motifs, riffs and ideas resurface and recur, each album peeling back a layer of the onion to glimpse at past and future alike.

Big Thief  – Capacity

The trails that Brooklyn’s Big Thief – Adrianne Lenker (guitar, vocals), Buck Meek (guitar), Max Oleartchik (bass), and James Krivchenia (drums) – take us down on Capacity, the band’s highly anticipated second record out on Saddle Creek Records, are overgrown with the wilderness of pumping souls. After last year’s stunning Masterpiece, Capacity was recorded in a snowy winter nest in upstate New York at Outlier Studio with producer Andrew Sarlo. The album jumps right into lives marked up and nipped in surprisingly swift fashion. They are peopled and unpeopled, spooked and soothed, regenerating back into a state where they can once again be vulnerable. Lenker’s songs introduce us to a gallery of multifacted women and deal with the complicated matters of identity — at once dangerous and curious, though never unbelievable. Lenker shows us the gentle side of being ripped open. Tricked into love, done in and then witnessing the second act of pulling oneself back together to prepare for it to all happen again, but this time to a sturdier soul, one who is going to take the punches better than ever before and deal some jabs and roundhouses of their own.The album is thick with raw, un-doctored beauty: most of the songs on Capacity were played for the first time in the studio and were recorded the same day. “There is a darker darkness and a lighter light on this album,” Lenker explains. “The songs search for a deeper level of self-acceptance, to embrace the world within and without. I think Masterpiece began that process, as a reaction from inside the pain, whereas I feel Capacity examines the pain from the outside.”

The Deslondes  – Hurry Home

The Deslondes are a five-piece band from New Orleans. In the time between the release of their self-titled debut and new sophomore album, Hurry Home, The Deslondes have toured the world and drawn critical acclaim for their studied and inventive take on New Orleans country and R&B. Hurry Home represents a sonic shift from the country-folk of their debut to a sometimes-psychedelic, electrified gospel-soul sound, with a stronger emphasis on organ and electric guitar. The band split up songwriting and lead vocal duties among its five members, continuing its democratic ethos and musical versatility. The sound may continue to draw comparisons to the country-funkiness of The Band, but The Deslondes were equally inspired by the sound of early Sun Records, the punchy rock and roll of VU-era Velvet Underground and the experimental pop of Joe Meek. Perhaps most importantly, Hurry Home is the sound of a band that understands the history of American music, but is deftly finding their own contemporary approach.

California singer-songwriter Louise Goffin will release her six-song EP Appleonfire” in 2015. The daughter of Gerry Goffin and Carole King, the EP is a tribute to the songwriting legacy of her late father and the very title calls to mind the old saying about the apple never falling too far from the tree.

“The choice of the word ‘fire’ is in reference to passing the torch, the creative fire, so to speak,” Louise said in a recent press statement. “Which, for me, is an existential need to create in order to feel meaning in this world, and the drive and purpose that comes with honoring that need.”

Gerry would have turned 76 today, and to commemorate her father Louise has released a video for album track “If I’m Late,” featuring Joseph Arthur.

Joseph Arthur‘s new album, “Lou” (Vanguard), is a moving tribute to the composer with Arthur singing 12 Reed songs with only his piano, acoustic guitar and a few, poignant vocal overdubs for company. “I made a rule,” Arthur writes in his liner notes, “no drums or electricity.” He stuck to it in a canny selection of hits and hidden genius.

The first track is “Walk on the Wild Side,” tenderly sung at a wounded crawl. But Lou really starts with the sharply drawn peril of “Sword of Damocles” from 1992’s Magic and Loss Album, framed in martial strumming and haunted piano. Arthur adds a high, distant vocal to “Stephanie Says,” as if Stephanie is in the room, singing back to him; “Heroin,” stripped of its original amplifier heat and John Cale‘s scalding viola, is a blues again; and “Wild Child,” a Velvets-era orphan revived by Reed for his self-titled 1972 debut, gets a gingerly hypnotizing third life.

Arthur, a friend of Reed‘s, says making this album was like “getting to hang out with Lou again. This was the only way to get close.” There is plenty of room for the rest of us too.
