OLA’s KOOL KITCHEN Radio Show Ep 242
Posted: January 17, 2015 in WE LOVETags: Garage, Indie, Ola's Kool Kitchen. Radio Show, Pop, Psychedlica
Any number of bands cite 60’s Texas psych as an influence, but rarely does a group actually capture what made those bands special. Following their debut EP also on Trouble In Mind, The Night Beats have expanded on the bedroom immediacy of their first recordings to create an LP that perfectly captures and modernizes the hallucinogenic and exhilaratingly demonic aura of bands like The 13th Floor Elevators and Golden Dawn. With blazing guitar work and a razor sharp rhythm section Danny Lee Blackwell and company mutate conventional chords & progressions into a mind-blowing sonic sprawl. The record reels you in with 2-3 minute pop songs like ‘Ain’t Dumbo’ and ‘Dial 666′, forging a landscape that then throws you into a chaotic journey of jams a’la ‘Dewayne’s Drone’ and ‘Little War in the Midwest’ that bend and meander but never overstay their welcome. Tune in, turn on, & drop that needle on this record.
The COVES – ” Beatings “
Posted: January 2, 2015 in WE LOVETags: Coves, Indie. Rock, Leamington Spa
Coves’ debut album was released in June.
We said – “I was hooked immediately by Coves. Opening with the 60s influenced Fall Out Of Love, this debut LP was off to a great start. They somehow manage to merge garage rock with a Phil Spector Philles girl band sound. There are no low points on the album. Fall Out Of Love, Honeybee and Cast A Shadow are probably my favourites. I say probably because every time I give the album a spin something else grabs me. There’s elements of the Mary Chain and My Bloody Valentine in there too. Some say there’s a White Stripes vibe going on but Coves are miles ahead of them. This is a perfect late night record. I know I will still be playing and loving Soft Friday in years to come.
MAC DeMARCO – ” Passing Out Pieces “
Posted: December 31, 2014 in WE LOVETags: Mac De Marco, Salad Days
Gap-toothed goofball Mac DeMarco’s aptly titled “Salad Days” album encapsulates a carefree summer at its finest—grab a cold-one, lounge by a pool, and this album will be your best friend. Beneath the blissful, nonchalant façade though, DeMarco reminds you that he’s getting older, and so are you. But that doesn’t mean that you can’t still chill out to his effortless psychedelic tunes for a little bit longer.
DAVID KILGOUR – ” Lose Myself In Sound “
Posted: December 15, 2014 in WE LOVETags: David Kilgour and the Heavy Eights, Indie. Rock, The Clean
David Kilgour & The Heavy 8s from the album– “End Times Undone” The Clean co-founder’s latest with his longtime band, The Heavy 8’s, is all chiming electric 12-strings, tuneful feedback and jangling grooves. Possessor of a pretty much perfect tone, Kilgour is a guitar hero who actually doesn’t go in for heroics all that much. He’s more interested in riding the wave of the music, effortlessly tossing out shimmering lines with a casual grace, always finding pleasantly unexpected places to take his solos.
SILK RHODES – ” Barely New “
Posted: November 22, 2014 in WE LOVETags: Silk Rhodes, Soul Funk, Stones Throw Records
The music Silk Rhodes make, it has been said, is very much in the style of early-‘70s soul. “It is recommended for fans of Sly and the Family Stone, the Delfonics and Al Green”, according to their PR, Well, it would be if they were trying to do it within one song, but what Silk Rhodes do is use each track as an opportunity to explore a different musical area: doo wop-inflected soul a la the Manhattans on This Painted World, Philly proto-disco on Personal Use, Riot-era Sly on Realtime, and so on. But actually, on occasions, they do manage to merge seemingly disparate influences: Hold Me Down, from their excellent self-titled debut album, the singing starts and it goes all woozy like a Sly Stone slowie – “ballad” has the wrong romantic connotations.
That singing is key, and might be make-or-break for some: the by turns nasal and falsetto vocals of Sasha Winn have a snarky quality that lend a distance, implying Silk Rhodes’ relationship with soul and funk is more cerebral than emotional. Or critical: are they wryly commenting on soul and funk’s seductive properties, The duo’s background – their name apparently “references the Deep Web drug market” and they are occasional live members of psych-pop outfits Run DMT and Salvia Plath (there’s a tab on one of their tongues in the video to the track Pains)
The music is mightily impressive. Pains, like many of the tracks, moves at a leisurely pace “How Can You Mend A Broken Heart” a gorgeous melody. Group 1987 lasts less than two minutes but could go on for hours, and despite the title is a superb nod to the Chi-Lites et al. They do veer out of their early-‘70s comfort zone: Face 2 Face, all handclaps and disco bassline, recalls Prince circa I Wanna Be Your Lover while the System has the mogadon machine beat of Dennis Edwards’ Don’t Look Any Further from 1982. Lyrically, they use soul music tropes throughout to make their point. Either way, it’s a great album, and another triumph for Stones Throw.
The BABE RAINBOW – “The Secret Enchanted Broccoli Forest “
Posted: November 20, 2014 in WE LOVETags: Australia, Psychedelic, The Babe Rainbow
Heard of THE BABE RAINBOW? Well, you should, because they’re going to be big. But not because we see them rivalling Lorde, but because there just isn’t any way to get their music out of your head. It’s beyond catchy.
To quickly fill you in, The Babe Rainbow is a three piece act hailing from the pristine Rainbow Bay (hence the name, probably) – which is relatively close to the Gold Coast in Australia. They have ties to Bleeding Knees Club, through their friend Jordan Malane (who is in BKC, duh). Most importantly, they’ve just offered up another single and accompanying video clip.

Brimming with ’60s nostalgia in both sight and sound, the Rainbow Bay guys have a new tune called ‘Secret Enchanted Broccoli Forest’ along with a handful of shows in support of its release. Ahead of their mystical east coast tour, vocalist and drummer Angus and their latest single, vegetables and his penchant for croissants.
LAYLA – ” Weighless ” Wonderland Sessions
Posted: November 14, 2014 in WE LOVETags: Black Mud EP, Layla, singer songwriter, Weightless EP
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e1uoOBkejsE
I’ve been hooked since I saw LAYLA at the Communion Records “Bushstock” down in Shepherd Bush earlier this year then the faboulas unleashed ‘Smokestacks’ EP back in March, a blisteringly epic track that kept me happy until April’s release of her EP, ‘Black Mud’. She didn’t stop there; retreating to ‘the Burrow’, a sanctuary of a recording space at the bottom of her garden LAYLA emerged with ‘Weightless’ – the eponymous title track of her new EP, and an anthem in it’s own right.
live session of ‘Weightless’ for the Wonderland Sessions. And she has just sold out the Lexington earlier this week for LAYLA’s first headlining gig, you’ll be well aware the South London artist has no shortage of support.
SCREAMING FEMALES – ” It All Means Nothing “
Posted: November 14, 2014 in WE LOVETags: New York, Post Punk Rock, Screaming Females
From the Screaming Females album “Ugly” on Don Giovanni Records Screaming Females is an American independent rock band, often labeled as a Post Punk Rock band, from New Brunswick, New Jersey. They have released five full length albums. The band features Marissa Paternoster on guitar and vocals, Jarrett Dougherty on drums, and King Mike on bass. We’ve been a band for 9 years. We used to do everything ourselves but these days a bunch of friends help us out with stuff.
Los Angeles based band The lineup: Jenno Bjørnkjær (music) and Katherine Mills Rymer (vocals).
The background: The “Oof” bit we get – listening to this LA-based duo’s music is like being winded by beauty. But it’s a terrible kind of beauty: floating vocals” just think Lana Del Rey cooing breathily as they find Laura Palmer’s corpse. They’re a couple – romantic and musical: the Danish Jenno Bjørnkjær and South African Katherine Mills-Rymer. They have a filmic past, literally, having met in New York while Bjørnkjær was working on music for Lars von Trier’s Melancholia. Apparently, they bonded “over a mutual love for French synthesizer music and all things Russian” The video to their last single, by making the rhythms and synths and strings in their songs synch together so seamlessly, There is already quite a bit of music out there by them. There’s an album, Disco to Die To, which came out last year, and it’s full of good – which is to say, intoxicating stuff. And already they are working on the follow-up, for early-2015 release: Acute Feast. As a prelude to that album, they are issuing a new single, You’re Always Good,
