With “Burn Your Fire For No Witness”, Angel Olsen has assembled a record she says felt wholly representative of her vision, a set of songs that take on the shape and skin of punk and country and folk music, sung through a slew of different microphones. Declarations of independence are often bracing, but rarely do they illuminate so ferociously the lonesome reality of being on your own.

There is a lot of heartbreak on “Burn Your Fire For No Witness”, as well as a lot of pleasing anachronism; a lot of hard-won resignation and what you might call stern vulnerability, a quality that Angel Olsen shares with other songwriters like Joni Mitchell without sounding at all like Mitchell. Her soprano can be a delicate and ghostly thing … but Olsen’s quaver holds your gaze, using her vibrato for effect, not whining or crumbling.” I love the track “Windows”  Angel Olsen’s previous 2012 album “Half Way Home” was a quiet, plaintive affair — a low-key country waltz with minimal, yet affecting instrumentation. Conversely, “Burn Your Fire” found her plugging in and turning up the faders. An album of closeness and distance, heartache and heartbreak. Olsen navigates these ups and downs with her voice as captain. It’s a mesmerizing instrument, sweet, tranquil then suddenly intense in an ascendant vibrato

There’s a relatively simplistic formula at work on the debut long-player from Woman’s Hour, but it’s executed with sensitivity and a rich narrative that allures the listener from start to finish. “Conversations” succeeds in capturing – entirely  – a humanity that’s both poetic and grounded. It’s simply astounding that they’ve pulled it of so perfectly, without a trace of lull.

Fans of dreamy, Synth Pop and  soulful indie-pop should tune in to ‘Conversations’, the captivatingly delicate debut by Cumbria’s Woman’s Hour. They are not your average band. The first clue comes in the name of the London-based swoon-pop four-piece, taken from a beloved female-focussed news and culture show on BBC Radio 4. The second is in their graphic, striking monochrome visuals, meticulously curated in collaboration with TATE and MOMA certified fine artists Oliver Chanarin and Adam Broomberg. These play with shape and texture, much like their powerful, iridescent music. On their excellent debut album ‘Conversations’, this has the intricate construction and intimacy of The xx and the iridescent shimmer of summer-defining indie pop.

Public Service Broadcasting - Gagarin

I heard the new track from PSB “Gagarin” this morning while listening to the All Songs Considered podcast. The duo Public Service Broadcasting attempts to “teach the lessons of the past through the music of the future” by mixing sounds from old propaganda films with electronic sounds. It works surprisingly well having seen the band last summer six times especially to the packed marquee at End of the Road festival. Below is the new video for “Gagarin” off the band’s forthcoming album. If you’ve ever wanted to watch two astronauts (or cosmonauts?) dancing while you listen to some real funky horns mixed with old sound clips about Yuri Gagarin, you have weirdly specific wishes, but also you can satisfy those desires with the video below:

The band’s full-length album “The Race For Space” is due out February 24th 2015 . I love the artwork for the album too.they have two shows scheduled for the Space Museum at Leicester, Also they will be at the Rough Trade store in Nottingham soon

If you want to hear more from Public Service Broadcasting , they have the 2013 album titled “Inform – Educate – Entertain” along with a great video  featuring some of the classic tracks from this talented and entertaining band.

Pinkshinyultrablast are a five piece from Russia’s St Petersburg whose artistic whim was to create something radically different from the “totally boring” local indie scene that surrounded them at home. If you carry any dreary, grey-stained stereotypes of what Russian rock is, prepare to have your imagination cremated by the euphoric and latitudinous shoegaze blend of their debut album, “Everything Else Matters”, which anchors itself somewhere between Cocteau Twins-ian atmosphere and the melodic glitter of a Polica record.

Inspired by a classic Astrobrite album that “researched spaces between ambient, heavy guitar and pop music”, the band preach their mantra via the juxtaposition of lead singer Lyubov’s tender female vocals against pure and epic waves of lush instrumentation. However, the real pay off comes from band member Rustam, whose contribution – labelled as “synths and electronics” – gives the entire thing the kind of kaleidoscopic melancholy that comes across like Andrew Weatherall mulling life over on a summer afternoon.

Screaming Females signed to the ever excellent Don Giovanni Records Back in December, we premiered the first live video that legendary rock-doc filmmaker Lance Bangs directed for Screaming Females’ song “Ripe,” off of the New Jersey band’s forthcoming album “Rose Mountain”. I’ve said it several times in recent posts, and I’ll say it again: That record is going to be a total shit-kicker. Get a taste of what to expect in a second Bangs-directed live video, this time for the previously unheard song “It’s Not Fair.”

New Jersey punks Screaming Females will unleash “Rose Mountain” early next year, a record that’s bound to be a total shit-kicker.The new single “Ripe,” and today the band shared a live performance of the song. Lance Bangs has directed an impressive roster of videos, the most recent of which was for Kim Deal’s new track “Biker Gone,” and he helmed the forthcoming Slint documentary Breadcrumb Trail. This is a high-contrast, stark video — the carefully coordinated cinematography rubs up against Screaming Females’ purposefully raw sound. Although the audio was professionally recorded, the band chose to not overdub it, maintaining some auditory semblance to a live performance. Maybe it always looks this way, but Marissa Paternoster’s guitar appears to be speckled with blood as she tears through the song’s absurdly awesome inaugural riff.

It’s been almost two years since Jason Molina of Songs: Ohia and Magnolia Electric Co. passed away due to organ failure, but since then we’ve heard a number of tribute covers by his peers and admirers. Marissa Nadler recorded a cover of Molina’s song “It’s Easier Now” for a new tribute album titled Through The Static And Distance: The Songs Of Jason Molina. All of the album proceeds will go to Molina’s family. This isn’t the first time we’ve heard a cover of this track; Mark Kozelek recorded his own version shortly after Molina’s passing, which was released on a benefit record alongside Molina’s friends and collaborators

Interpol and a song from their new album ‘El Pintor’.  coming from the fifth album released in September

The video above shows the band performing the song live earlier this year at O2 Academy Brixton in London when the band headlined the NME Awards Tour,  Interpol finished mixing ‘El Pintor’ earlier this year. It was recorded between New York studios Electric Lady and Atomic Sound.

Interpol previewed three new songs when they headlined this year’s NME Awards Tour,  Track titles included ‘My Desire’, and ‘All The Rage Back Home’. The band topped the bill above Temples, Royal Blood and Circa Waves.

Speaking to NME earlier this year, guitarist Daniel Kessler said that he felt a “new, natural energy” between the band while making the album. “We’re never lacking ideas or inspiration,” he said. “There’s always something new to be said, and if you don’t have something new to say, that’s when you should take a break. We got back together because we felt that some of these songs had a certain urgency. It feels like a new band again.”

Zola Jesus has a new album called “Taiga” out , and from everything we’re hearing, it continues her move away from operatic noise-goth and toward a glossy sort of darkness. The album’s first single was the grand, triumphant  track called “Dangerous Days.” She’s now followed it up with “Go (Blank Sea),” a glimmering, heavy piece of synthy pop melody that sounds closer to the Weeknd than I ever imagined Zola Jesus would come. But there’s a pulsing heart at the center of the song, and that’s been a part of Nika Roza Danilova’s sound since the beginning.
