Marissa Nadler lays the listener – and herself – on the line with ‘July’, her sixth full-length album in nearly a decade. Recorded at Seattle’s Avast Studio, the album pairs  Marissa Nadler for the first time with producer Randall Dunn (Earth, Sunn O))), Wolves In The Throne Room). Dunn matches Nadler’s darkness by creating a multi-coloured sonic palette that infuses new dimensions into her songs. Eyvand Kang’s strings, Steve Moore’s synths and Phil Wandscher’s guitar lines escalate the whole affair to a panoramic level of beautiful, eerie wonder. The results are astonishing and occasionally reminiscent of  being in a David Lynch movie.

Its a sublime gothy-folky feel this singer songwriter manages to be a melange of fragile, brittle, sad, delicate, punchy, catchy, eerie.songs and sounds .Frequently quivering with an indefinable nostalgia, never merely wispy, perhaps weighted with the wistful, hints of melancholy hanging in the air like mist or fog. Imagine a sad silvery sound, occasionally lingering, acoustic autumnal sounds without overbearing mournful dirges.
Perhaps the musical equivalent of a discarded remnant of a lace bodice or unfettered veil fluttering over the ground, only to be captured with repeated attempts, to reveal a tatter of shroud. Totally original to herself, Marissa Nadler this album is a pure gem.

The Districts, from the small town of Lititz have achieved something massive and managed to fulfil their potential seen in the early album release Telephone, and their self-titled EP, the record which really threw them under the microscope and in to the limelight. Luckily for them and us the band only went further to build on tracks such as ‘Funeral Beds’ and ‘Lyla’. Their new album titled ‘A Flourish and A Spoil’ is all in all, a fantastic record. Built on classic rock riffs with the honesty of a band unperturbed by fame or fortune by finding the joy of music in it’s Capabilities. See songs ‘4th and Roebling’ and ‘Peaches’ for the proof.

The Districts perform their single “4th and Roebling” off their new album, “A Flourish and a Spoil.”

Kevin Robert Morby is an American musician. He is best known as the former bassist of Woods, and the songwriter and guitarist of The Babies. He released his debut solo album the wonderful  “Harlem River” in 2013, and his second album “Still Life” in October 2014.

17-year-old  Kevin Morby dropped out of Blue Valley Northwest High School, got his GED, and moved from his native Kansas City to Brooklyn in the mid-2000s, supporting himself by working bike delivery and café jobs.

He later joined the noise-folk group Woods on bass. While living in Brooklyn, he became close friends and room mates with Cassie Ramone of the punk trio Vivian Girls, and the two formed a side project together called The Babies, who released albums in 2011 and 2012.

Following his move to Los Angeles, Morby recorded a collection of songs with Babies producer Rob Barbato which were intended to be an homage to New York City. Released in 2013 by Woodsist Records, the eight-song collection was called “Harlem River“ and became Morby’s debut as a solo artist. The album also features drummer Justin Sullivan (The Babies) as well as contributions from Will Canzoneri, Tim Presley (White Fence), Dan Lead, and Cate Le Bon.

While on tour, Morby wrote songs that were later featured on his second album, “Still Life“. The album was once again produced by Barbato and released on October 14, 2014

natalie Prass

Natalie Prass is some kind of artist, a songwriter’s songwriter and performer’s performer blessed with a golden voice and universal appeal—a singer who understands the vision and brings an undeniable talent to the process. She’s a joy for any listener to discover—a lover and a fighter and old-soul trader in genuine energy, aiming straight for the heart.Natalie Prass turns a sly eye to the pageantry of emotion, the drama of love and the mysteries of everyday life with a disarming mixture of sincerity and cosmic insolence, She is unapologetically romantic, spinning golden threads of lyrics and melody, each inflection planned and considered, each word tailored for meaning and effect—Its the pop gesture as artform. She delivers it all with carefree charm and nearly divine intuition. Her voice, at times so ethereal, is shot through by strength and sinew and just a hint of transient grit. The feeling is soft, but it cuts so deep, leaving any listener with a trace of a soul, thunderstruck and enchanted.

Born in Cleveland, in the heart of the 1980s, Prass entered the teenage slipstream back on the east coast, past the haunted houses, surf shops, and burger joints of Virginia Beach, a mid-tier, rough-around-the-edges resort town. There is an inevitability to every biography, a myriad of strange narrative palm lines that twist and intersect, and she followed hers bravely to a seam of alternative beach culture, living close to the Atlantic Ocean but studying a less bronzed way of life. With her pet bird on her shoulder, she took intensive music and visual art courses all through high school. Going to a good music school was the next logical step, but after a year in cold, snowy Boston, Prass dropped out of Berklee and returned to the beach. She spent a spell working and playing shows in boardwalk clubs before moving out to Nashville where she has spent close to the last decade developing her craft, collaborating with some of the better characters on the edges of Music City culture, building a reputation with her radiant voice, unique performances, and for being a bit of an iconoclast. Prass has carefully avoided the glossy singer-songwriter scene, reaching for something more interesting, more exciting. For her debut performance at Nashville’s storied Ryman Auditorium, she surprised fans by pulling off a guileless reggae set in front of an Isaac Hayes poster she had displayed behind her band.

When the time came to record a full length, Natalie Prass returned to Virginia to work with Spacebomb Records, a label able to realize big visions and lush productions within the rustic charm of its attic studio. The match made sense musically and her ties to Matthew E. White go back to playing in rock bands in their high school days. The two worked together, selecting nine tracks to run through Spacebomb’s creative machine. With hard work and the alchemy of circumstance, they crafted an unassuming masterpiece—a real stunner that sounds both thoroughly out-of-time and impossibly fresh.

Prass is a powerful, beguiling performer and cunning pop composer—one for the moment and one for the ages.

Father John Misty and his new album, “I Love You, Honeybear“, is out next week.  New York radio station WFUV has posted a video of a  session featuring the man himself and his beautiful voice ,Father John Misty performing three songs from the record: “Chateau Lobby #4 (In C for Two Virgins)”, “Strange Encounters”, and “Nothing Good Ever Happens at the Goddamn Thirsty Crow”. This is truly a wonderful session and just gives an insight into the new album. “I Love You, Honeybear’, a self-described “concept record about a guy called Josh Tillman”, which is a terminal smartarse’s way of saying it’s a confessional – and what a revelation it turns out to be.

“I Love You, Honeybear” is out February 9th in Europe via Bella Union

Written around the time Tillman got hitched to this girlfriend, it’s a hugely ambitious, caustically funny album about the redemptive possibilities of love,  Songs like ‘The Night Josh Tillman Came To Our Apartment’ (“I love the kind of woman who can walk over a man/I mean like a goddamn marching band”) and ‘The Ideal Husband’ suggest a man whose soul needs, saving,

With a very Harry Nilsson-esque and a brilliant title ‘Nothing Good Ever Happens At The Goddamn Thirsty Crow’, the ambition pays off beautifully. But he saves the best for a piano ballad, previous single ‘Bored In The USA’, which undercuts the lyric’s narcissism (“Is this the part where I get all I ever wanted?”) with a canned-laughter track – an exquisite touch, and a song Randy Newman would kill to have written, What saves our narrator is – you guessed it – the love of a good woman, and closer ‘I Went To The Store One Day’ finds him finally flirting with happiness, a concept the “aimless, fake drifter” in him always figured was for squares (“For love to find us of all people/I never thought it’d be so simple”).

shanafalana

Beautifully layered harmonies and droned out drums drive Shana Falana’s upcoming shoegaze-y record. Hailing from New York, she and drummer (and boyfriend,) are set to release their first full-length album, “Set Your Lightning Free”, on April 7th via Team Love Records. Although this is her debut, she previously released a collection of demo recordings titled Shana Falana Sings Herself to Sleep through an Indiegogo campaign. Ms. Falana is a magician who can make any song recorded on a phone sound amazing. I guess that’s how shoegaze works though? Is this the future? IS THIS IT? It’s weird to think that people made this type of music before the existence of smartphones. Below, we’re premiering her new clean, sparkly jam “Heavenstay” from her upcoming record–and if you’re enjoying it, be sure to check out her
