Another great release from Courtney Barnett and I’m sure a very big deal for her being involved with Jack White. Hopefully Jack realises that it’s just as big a deal for him to work with Courtney. The A-Side is superb whilst “Shivers” is an excellent cover of a legendary Birthday Party track from right back at the start of their career and not penned by Nick Cave but Rowland S Howard.

Produced by Jack White for Third Man Records’ Blue Series
The Band
Courtney Barnett – Guitar & Vocals
Bones Sloane – Bass Guitar
Dave Mudie – Drums

A. Boxing Day Blues Revisited is written by Courtney Barnett (it is not the same song as Boxing Day Blues…)
B. Shivers was written by the late Rowland S. Howard and first performed and recorded by The Boys Next Door.

Muddy Waters’ album “Electric Mud”, which Chess Records originally released in 1968, has not seen a legitimate domestic vinyl release since 2002, despite its enormous influence on generations of blues rockers. It features members of Rotary Connection as Muddy’s backing band and was very controversial upon its release for its fusion of electric blues with psychedelic elements. The album is now recognized as a forward-thinking classic, sampled extensively and widely admired.

Pre-order the reissue, pressed at the highest quality at Third Man Pressing, now:

Margo Price will release her sophomore solo album All American Made on October 20th via Third Man Records. The follow-up to the 2016 breakout smash Midwest Farmer’s Daughter, the new record finds Price wrestling with the travails of the road, sexism in the music industry, and the darker currents of the American political landscape. One track, “Learning To Lose,” features a guest vocal from none other than Willie Nelson.

Price recorded the album in Memphis at Sam Phillips Recording with her band of regulars that includes Kevin Black (bass), Jamie Davis (electric guitar), Micah Hulscher (piano), Jeremy Ivey (acoustic guitar/bass/harmonica), Dillon Napier (drums), and Luke Schneider (pedal steel). Matt Ross-Spang and Alex Munoz helmed the sessions, co-producing with Price and Ivey.

Price also announced a headlining tour for 2018, in addition to some fall festival slots. Check out the album’s first single, “A Little Pain,”

The debut EP from this Nashville act is special. Following their Third Man Records debut single “Georgia Dust”, the band drew the attention of endearing fans and critics alike. Even though they are all around 21 years old, they craft music that soars past age and boundary. The act has been playing together in some form since the eighth grade and it shows. They have a loose and free form style that warrants their recognition. the original trio of Alex Benick (guitar, vocals), Asher Horton (bass guitar), and Ben Parks (drums) soaking in music from the East Nashville indie scene during their teens and a shared love of music like The Band, Wilco, and Buzzcocks. The group honed their craft performing live over two years before catching the attention of Jack White’s Third Man Records.

@ohmybubba will be playing @rockwoodmusichall 7/12 to promote their new #jackwhite produced single 'Gone'. Expect a soothing set with #nordic flavors - great for #datenight !

The duo of My Larsdotter and Guðbjörg Tómasdóttir, from Sweden and Iceland respectively, recorded this track for Third Man Records’ “Blue Series.” For it, artists travelling through the label’s hometown of Nashville are invited to stop by to record one or two songs, produced by Jack White, that are then quickly pressed onto 7″ vinyl.

Scandinavian folk duo My Bubba make soft, soulful music that is as playful as it is powerful.  Together, My Larsdotter and Bubba Tomasdottir have toured with Damien Rice, co-written music with Matthew E. White, recorded with Noah Georgeson and stepped on Bryan Adams’ toes. Literally. My Bubba’s latest release is Third Man Blue Series single ‘Gone’. Their next album is a personal and intimate collection of Swedish folk songs, which will be released on the duo’s own label Cash Only on August 25th.

Nigh on ten years ago,  The White Stripes unveiled the most ambitious record of their career. Taking its name from the mis-appropriation of the British exhortation “Ecky thump” the Stripes’ Icky Thump would prove to be the final full-length studio album from the beloved Detroit duo. To celebrate not only the ten years since the albums release, but also twenty years since Jack and Meg started the White Stripes AND the 500th release in the Third Man Records’ catalog, we are delighted to announce the release of our 33rd Vault package, “Icky Thump X”.

Deluxe Icky Thump 180-gram, colored vinyl
The cornerstone of the package is the deluxe, “contained explosion” colored vinyl repressing of Icky Thump. Previously only ever available on boring black vinyl, this double LP, 180-gram vinyl dream is housed in a glorious tip-on sleeve with slightly modified artwork and sealed with a Victorian update on the original red/white sticker that was begrudgingly slit open by fidgety record collectors overly concerned with “condition.” Remastered from the original 1” analog tapes in Nashville, TN, Icky Thump will be the first-ever Vault title manufactured at the Third Man pressing plant in Detroit. You will not believe your ears.

Track List:

Icky Thump
You Don’t Know What Love Is (You Just Do As You’re Told)
300 MPH Torrential Outpour Blues
Conquest
Bone Broke
Prickly Thorn, But Sweetly Worn
St. Andrew (This Battle Is In The Air)
Little Cream Soda
Rag and Bone
I’m Slowly Turning Into You
A Martyr For My Love For You
Catch Hell Blues
Effect & Cause

12″ Icky Thump Extras Vinyl
The logical companion piece to Icky Thump is the collection compiling all nine of the non-album b-sides recorded for (and during) the release and tour cycle. Icky Thump Extras joins live covers (Hank Williams’ “Tennessee Border”), alternate versions recorded in the middle of a horse-racing track in Canada (“You Don’t Know What Love Is…”) with Beck produced exclusives (“It’s My Fault For Being Famous”) and couples them with newly reimagined artwork from Grammy Award-winning designer Rob Jones. Consider this the first and last time any of these songs will appear on 12-inch vinyl, pressed on luminescent lunar-colored vinyl. Extras will also be manufactured at the Third Man Pressing in Detroit.

Track List:

Tennessee Border (originally by Hank Williams)
Baby Brother (originally by Bill Carter and the Rovin Gamblers)
You Don’t Know What Love Is (You Just Do As You’re Told) (frat rock version)
A Martyr For My Love For You (acoustic version)
It’s My Fault For Being Famous
Cash Grab Complications On The Matter
Honey, We Can’t Afford To Look This Cheap
Conquest (acoustic mariachi version)
Conquista (Spanish language version)

The Red Demos
Prior to entering Blackbird Studios for the tracking of Icky Thump, the White Stripes did a full run-through of the tracks in demo form to workshop ideas and get thoughts on tape at their Nashville rehearsal spot. This would prove to be the Only time the band would ever demo an album before recording. Forgotten by all involved in the intervening ten years, The Red Demos is a startling insight into the germination of the songs that would soon be blasted out at arenas and festivals the world over. Of particular interest is the first ever release of the instrumental “Monkeys Have It Easy”, a title previously teased via the original Icky Thump press release in 2007. Cover art depicts a working mock-up of the unedited image used on the original album and exists as the ideal compliment to both that original issue and the mono mix of Icky Thump from the vault package No1 .

Track List:

You Don’t Know What Love Is (You Just Do As You’re Told)
A Martyr For My Love For You
Rag and Bone
Catch Hell Blues
Little Cream Soda
Prickly Thorn, But Sweetly Worn
Monkeys Have It Easy (previously unreleased)
Bone Broke
Icky Thump
Conquest
300 MPH Torrential Outpour Blues

Exclusive Polaroid Photo Book
To further push this package into “I Cannot Believe They Did That” territory is an exclusive book comprised of Polaroid photos, tracking notes and insight from Icky Thump session photographer and White Stripes’ confidante David Swanson . Comprised 100% of previously unseen and unshared material, the of-the-moment documentation of the album and its recording process by Swanson’s intuitive and discerning eye is revelatory.
Mystery Art Prints by Rob Jones
To even further blow this thing out of the water is one of nine different 8×10 White Stripes images by Rob Jones. Randomly inserted so you have no idea which one you’ll get, these include classic updates on art and graphics from the original release era in addition to completely new ideas, all rendered in the highest quality silkscreen printing and suitable for immediate framing or burning.

“Rag and Bone” Enamel Pin Set
Not enough? Ok, take Two enamel pins that when combined depict the horse skeleton imagery originally featured on the 7-inch artwork for “Rag and Bone” and understand full well that the addition of said pins will elevate any drab old potato sack to a best-dressed list ensemble.

Cross of St. Andrew Soft Touch Box
All of these components will be lovingly housed in a soft-touch coated telescoping box that reproduces the cross of St. Andrew used as an important graphic in Icky Thump’s issue ten years ago and rendered even more poignant now as the specific version of that cross (the Cross of Burgundy) forms the shape of an X.

The RSD release will come with a 7″ featuring a couple of unreleased Blue Series recordings as well, from First Aid Kit and Gibby Haynes of the Butthole Surfers.

TMR 454 BOBSEGER A MOCKUP

Record Store Day 2017 is Saturday, April 22nd, Third Man Records is ecstatic to partner with the Bob Seger camp is to release the first vinyl reissue of Bob Seger System’s “2+2=?” in nearly four decades. Remastered directly from the analog tapes by Robert Vosgien and cut by Ron McMaster at Capitol Mastering, Third Man will release a limited edition yellow-colored vinyl version for Record Store DayApril 22nd, with a standard black vinyl version to follow.  Fittingly, both versions are being manufactured at Third Man’s new pressing plant in Detroit.

As the debut release under the Bob Seger System moniker, “2+2=?” is a landmark moment in the evolution and career of Bob Seger . The January 1968 release of “2+2=?”, Seger’s first single on Capitol Records, is an emotional, spirited anti-war protest delivered at the height of escalating tensions in Vietnam. Stylistically, the hypnotic, repetitive bass line is accented by a stinging fuzz guitar accompaniment, all paired with Seger’s signature vocal rasp. Credited to “The Bob Seger System,” this first single from the 1969 album Ramblin’ Gamblin’ Man was a hit in Seger’s native Detroit when it was released a year ahead of the LP, but ignored by mainstream audiences.
But “2 + 2 = ?” has a special connection to White, who once called it his famous song. And a finely-tuned ear won’t have to go far to notice the similarities between the Seger tune and “Seven Nation Army,” one of the best-known tunes by White’s breakthrough band, The White Stripes.

Backed with the classic track “Ivory”, this 7-inch single will feature artwork originally used on European picture sleeves for both songs.

pearl jam package

Two days before Pearl Jam’s headlining Bonnaroo show, the rock legends performed a career-spanning set for just 250 fans at Third Man Records’ Nashville venue, Blue Room. The results were recorded direct to acetate and will be released as a limited edition live LP through Third Man’s Vault subscription service.

Vault Package 29 will include a black-and-gold, split-colored vinyl edition of the concert, along with a seven-inch featuring a solo Eddie Vedder acoustic song recorded at Third Man’s Voice-o-Graph recording booth. Rounding out the set is a hardcover photo book featuring shots by the label’s in-house photographer, Jamie Goodsell; a metal lapel pin featuring a custom Pearl Jam/Third Man mash-up logo; and a circular patch with the same design.

Pearl Jam performed 10 tracks during their wide ranging Blue Room show opening with a cover of Pink Floyd’s “Interstellar Overdrive” and spanning their own catalog, from the albums Ten deep cut “Deep” to 2006’s “Life Wasted.” The band kicked off their encore with unreleased track “Of the Earth,” bringing out Third Man founder Jack White to trade guitar solos with Mike McCready. A preview of the thunderous latter song is available below.

On June 9th, 2016, Third Man Records was humbled to welcome Pearl Jam for a performance in our Nashville Blue Room live venue. Kept secret until the absolute last moment, the crowd of only 250 included lucky Ten Club members, mayors, NBA superstars, country music royalty, and possibly even a few stowaways. To call it a “warm-up” for their headlining set at Bonnaroo two nights later would be to vastly undervalue the evening. The band tore through a clutch collection of songs that spanned both deep cuts and fan favorites. A classic like “Deep” from Ten sits comfortably next to “Life Wasted” from their self-titled album Pearl Jam, and set-closer “Let Me Sleep” was originally recorded in 1990 (and was the band’s first-ever Ten Club release). The highlight of the performance came when Pearl Jam invited Jack White and his guitar to the stage to join on a song that clocked in at over seven minutes and featured wild dueling solos between White and Mike McCready, this epic performance left every mouth in the audience agape and every face on stage all smiles. Those seven minutes were truly some of the most memorable and historic in seven years since the Blue Room opened its doors.

All this said, it should come as no surprise that this performance is the centerpiece of Third Man’s 29th Vault package: a black-and-gold, split-colored vinyl version of Pearl Jam’s set, recorded live direct-to-acetate and packaged in a stunning custom jacket, all soft touch coating and gilded gold metallic ink. While split-colors are normally only made available to attendees of the show, the opportunity to share this once-in-a-lifetime performance with the wide-reaching TMR and PJ world’s was too good to pass up

The following afternoon Eddie Vedder entered Third Man Records’ Voice-o-Graph recording booth and performed an arresting, solo acoustic song. Housed in a custom TMR Record Booth sleeve and pressed on clear transparent vinyl (just like the original) this disc captures a poignant moment for Vedder, and marks the event of yet another musical legend making exceptional use of the Third Man Recording Booth.

Third Man’s accomplished in-house photographer Jamie Goodsell documented the entirety of the evening’s events on his trusty SLR camera. These images have been compiled into a timeless photo book. This embossed, fabric-wrapped, 9” x 6” hardcover photo collection gives the viewer the ability to look behind the curtain, both into Pearl Jam and Third Man’s worlds on a special night for both parties.

Rounding out Vault Package #29 are a 1” round metal lapel pin utilizing the custom Pearl Jam/Third Man mashup logo (printed onto silk-screened posters and complimentary beer koozies used that fateful night) in addition to a 3” circular patch of the same design, featuring gold thread and just begging to be sewn onto your motorcycle leather, denim vest, varsity jacket, backpack, wedding gown, pillowcase, coffin lining, underwear, etc, etc…

ALL of these items will ONLY be available as part of Third Man’s Platinum Vault Subscription service. For this Vault Package #29 ONLY, all members of Pearl Jam’s Ten Club will receive a SINGLE-USE coupon code entitling them to $15 off the cost of the package. Ten Club members active as of 6/30/16 have been sent their unique code as well as instructions to subscribe. Platinum Vault Subscriptions using this coupon code WILL NOT RENEW for the next Vault cycle. Subscribe early, subscribe often — Just make sure you subscribe by July 31st, the official deadline. It is our hope that Ten Club members will enjoy the experience of the Third Man Vault and Third Man Vault members will be incentivized to further explore Pearl Jam’s incredibly rewarding fan club.

Recorded Direct-To-Acetate on May 30th, 2013 at Third Man Records in the Blue Room.
Flashback to the Music Industry, 1993: everyone is looking to sign the “next” Nirvana. Atlantic Records found exactly the band they were looking for in the Melvins. Birthed in the Pacific Northwest gloom of Aberdeen that would spawn grunge music and culture, the Melvins were writing songs that were clearly inspired by the right stuff and written for the right people… and they had Nirvana’s unequivocal stamp of approval, which meant everything in the early 90’s. For the next four years after their signing, the Melvins would deliver three stellar, influential albums that were criminally only moderately appreciated at the time. In the past 23 years, they’ve continued onwards with Buzz Osborne, Dale Crover, and a revolving cast of bassists at the helm, (even making a stop to perform Live in the Blue Room back in May of 2013) cementing themselves as one of the most important American rock bands of all time.

http://

It seems that Melvins have released more albums than anybody else, ever. So here’s what you really need in your collection…
When you’re a band with a back catalogue as overwhelmingly massive as the Melvins do, it’s kind of hard to pick your 10 favourite songs. In fact, according to frontman Buzz Osbourne, “it’s nearly impossible”.

Indeed, since forming in Montesano, Washington in 1984, the group – rounded off by drummer Dale Crover and a constantly revolving door of bassists – have released a staggering 25 studio albums, 14 EPs, 12 live albums and 10 compilation records and have never settled on one idea for too long.
