The loudest guy in the world came to the Tiny Desk to perform some of his quietest music.

Dinosaur Jr.‘s J Mascis, for years a guy who’s turned my ears red, showed up armed with just an acoustic guitar. I even had an amp for that guitar all lined up, but he decided to not plug in.

So we get a rare treat: a low-key J Mascis, performing emotional songs from his new album “Tied To A Star”, as well as Dinosaur Jr.‘s classic “Little Fury Things.” If you think Mascis draws all his power from sheer volume, this ought to convince you otherwise.

Set List

  • “Stumble”
  • “Little Fury Things”
  • “Drifter/Heal The Star”

From the self-titled debut Alvvays album, out now on Transgressive Records, their new unveiled release “Party Police”, the next single from their lauded eponymous debut. It’s set to get released on Transgressive – one of our Labels Of 2014 – on 23rd February.

In out interview/eavesdrop, the label’s Tim Dellow described Alvvays as “the greatest new band Expanding, he said: “I mean talk about great debut albums, this is just end to end, every song is incredible. Lyrically, and lead singer Molly Rankins just incredible. It’s just one of those bands – like Belle And Sebastian or Camera Obscura meets Breeders – amazing kind of really intelligent, brilliant modern female perspective that both seduces and undermines at the same time; a really tough slant.”

Toronto’s Alvvays have announced ‘Party Police’ as the next single from their self-titled album,

One of the most reflective tracks from their acclaimed debut, the rousing chorus of ‘Party Police’ has seen the track quickly become a live favourite in the indie-pop band’s set.
Alvvays return to the UK for a full European tour on 21st January. Having already sold out the London and Manchester dates of the run, the band recently announced new shows in those cities for September 2015. Tickets are available now.

Away From The Water by Lola Colt  on Fuzz Club This is an album which has a lot of different ingredients which meld together beautifully to create a very distinct sound. Add to this a production that, for me, gives the right balance of raw fuzzy power and smooth harmonies and you get a set whose expansive vision is redolent with big skies, huge expanses of desert and endless vistas, It’s an album that gives you room to breath. Yet it is also a album that is intense and claustrophobic, causing the listener to pause and think. It encourages a psychedelic inner journey and yet pulls you towards the horizon, and I find that to be a very potent mixture.

Andrew Combs stopped in Kansas City last week, and I was lucky enough to have a free night. He was opening for Amanda Shires – but it was his name that got me out of the house and into the doors of the Riot Room. It was a modest crowd, but everyone’s attention was intensely fixed when Andrew and his band hit the stage. He played most of his debut album, Worried Man, as well as some newer stuff coming our way. He closed out the night with the new fast-burner that is “Emily”, listen below.

He let us know that we should expect to see another album from him early next year. If you see him coming through your town, go ahead and free up your night – it’ll be worth it. Andrew is playing at the Glee Club in Nottingham with Justin Townes Earle,

presents First Aid Kit performing live in the KEXP studio. Recorded November 15, 2014.

Swedish duo comprising sisters Johanna and Klara Söderberg, whose vocal harmonies and woodsy, folk-influenced songwriting take influence from the likes of Fleet Foxes and Joanna Newsom. Hailing from suburban Enskede, the siblings began composing songs as young teenagers in 2007. The home-recorded “Tangerine” enjoyed airplay on Swedish radio later that summer, and the debut EP Drunken Trees helped expand the girls’ audience upon its release in April 2008. The London-based Wichita Records reissued Drunken Trees one year later, bolstering its track list with a reverent Fleet Foxes cover and three additional songs performed live in a Swedish forest. The duo then set to work on a full-length album, balancing schoolwork with the recording sessions. “The Big Black & the Blue” was released in 2010, and was followed by a request from Jack White to record a single at his Third Man Studios, which resulted in their cover of Buffy Sainte-Marie‘sUniversal Soldier.” They struck up a friendship with Conor Oberst and appeared live with Bright Eyes on tour, before they entered the studio with the band’s guitarist Mike Mogis for their third release, Lion’s Roar, which arrived in early 2012. The lead single “Emmylou” was a mild success in the U.S., and was listed by Rolling Stone as their tenth best single of the year in 2012. Their creative relationship with Oberst was cemented in 2014 when the sisters sang backing vocals on his solo album Upside-Down Mountain, and that same year the duo released Stay Gold, their first album on a major label.

Having formed just over a year ago in the suburban decay of Chesham, South Bucks, Big Sixes are an exciting new force in music. Their innovative take on indie pop is a breath of fresh air in the stagnant alternative music scene

Oh do not ask what is it, let us go and make our visit to the infamous music venue Rock City to bear witness,

Slaves are a two-piece. Garage band who make a huge noise, Isaac Holman and Laurie Vincent: one shouts and bangs the drums while standing up, the other coaxes great, fat metal riffs from his guitar. if you shut your eyes this is what the Black Keys might have sounded like had they been raised on Shane Meadows films on a housing estate – wry, suburban disaffection, like Sleaford Mods but with less swearing; maybe a hint of Madness and a bit of vaudeville fun too (“Hello, how’s Amelia? Is she still ugly?” – How’s Amelia). New punk sensations tend to burn out quickly but we think Slaves’ wit will carry them through. They also have a song called Where’s Your Car Debbie?

King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizzard:  these Australians probably played the most shows during CMJ in New York. The band played every venue and every day they could, there was the ‘Gizzard’s knocking people’s socks off, sometimes through sheer momentum and frenetic energy. With  three guitarists, two drummers, two singers and the occasional flute (some of these duties overlapped), they were a psych-garage semi with no brakes down a steep incline. Was there more than one song or just one really long insane one? I can’t remember but it’s an awesome blur. The band are playing the Bodega Social on Wednesday 26th November catch them now before they return to Oz.

New York’s Public Access TV are Radar Band Of The Week in this week’s NME, and for good reason. Since emerging at the beginning of this year with debut track ‘Monaco’, they’ve slowly but surely set out their stall as the most exciting thing to step out of Gotham in recent memory. ‘In The Mirror’ follows the buoyant garage-pop of this summer’s ‘Rebounder’ EP, showing that they’ve still got plenty left in the tank with a Costello strut and Strokes-esque loucheness. Listen below and catch the band when they head over to the UK in November to support Circa Waves who will be at the Bodega Social In Nottingham on the 11th November.

Billy’s slick guitar and key work, paired with a sincere, soulful vocal initially uploaded his first recorded track to the BBC Introducing Uploader; winning support from the likes of Fearne Cotton, Greg James and Huw Stephens. After being added to the BBC Radio 1 Introducing playlist twice and working with Andy Green on his most recent tracks, Billy became noted for his upbeat, festival-esque performances; honed in intimate church-like venues. .. and you thought Northampton only made good shoes?, catch Billy Lockett at the Bodega Social 2nd November 2014
