rem

REM delivered two superb performances on the MTV Unplugged Sessions in the acoustic format firstly in 1991 and then again in 2001 which gave them the distinction of being the only band to headline this programme twice, This set includes both sessions plus a further eleven songs never aired. The 1991 set is around at the time of the “OUT OF TIME” album the band were becoming the biggest band in the world at that time with favourites “Losing My Relegion” “Low” and “Radio Song” the remaining songs are from five albums over a eight year period, Five songs were heard for the first time.
REM then made a second appearance in 2001 without the original drummer Bill Berry, this set focused on the 12th studio album “REVEAL” and a further songs from eight different albums, it includes six songs that were never broadcast its interesting that there is a good number of older and some obscure songs particulary “CURAHOGA” from the LIFES RICH PAGEANT

The seven and a half minute “Suite: Judy Blue Eyes” is a true suite in every way. Stills wrote this about his former girlfriend, folk singer Judy Collins. It is an early example of truly progressive music built on acoustic rhythms and harmonies throughout it’s four distinct sections. The first section is a traditional pop song, with the second, slower section focused on three-part harmonies, concluding with a brief acoustic lead by Stills. A unique percussion is played during the third part with a full drumbeat introducing the climatic ending part, which features some Spanish lyrics accompanying the famous “doo-doo-doo-da-doo” vocals. The song actually preceded Nash’s involvement in the group and was the very first recorded once he joined in mid 1968.
“Marrakesh Express” is a short but pleasant pop song by Nash, written while he was still with The Hollies but originally rejected by that group. It features an unforgettable, well-treated lead guitar by Stills and less harmonizing than on the opening song.
The song was a pop hit, reaching the Top 10 on the Billboard charts. Stills’ guitar riff floats over the song in a way reminiscent of the sitar. Crosby’s initial contribution, “Guinnevere”, is much darker song than preceding two songs. Very soft and hypnotic, the song never picks up the pace or the intensity and features strange tuning and time signatures.

the debut album in 1969, ushered in the start of the 1970’s singer songwriter period, a group of individual composers, vocalists, Crosby the ex Byrd, Stills from the Buffalo Springfield and Nash a former member of The Hollies. Each supplied a distinctive material to the CSN sound,
Harmonically brilliant, superb explorations into three part harmony.

dylanfreewheelin

the Freewheelin’ album one of the best of the acoustic based Dylan albums and his second album release, of the 13 tracks released on the official album all but one were written by Dylan.about half of those have become all time classic’s.the opener “Blowin in the Wind” has become anthemic worldwide, “Girl from the North Country”,”Masters Of War”, “A Hard Rains Gonna Fall and “Dont Think Twice Its Allright” there was political material, love songs some bitter and accusatory and songs that had surreal humour all of which propelled him to international acclaim this was an angry and bluesy with Dylan still learning his trade knowing he was moving in the right direction
there is an outtake album which appeared in 1994 including several songs that still remain unreleased.
