bob dylan freewheelin

Released on this day in 1963, The Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan! The album that established Bob Dylan as a leader in the singer-songwriter genre and a spokesman for the youth-orientated protest movement. The Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan is filled top to bottom with iconic songs, including “Blowin’ In The Wind,” “Don’t Think Twice, It’s All Right,” “Masters Of War” and “A Hard Rain’s A-Gonna Fall.”

Easily the best of Dylan’s acoustic albums and a quantum leap from his debut—which shows the frantic pace at which Dylan’s mind was moving. You can see why this album got the Beatles listening. The songs at its core must have sounded like communiques from another plane  I think it was the first time I ever heard Dylan at all… And for the rest of our three weeks in Paris, we didn’t stop playing it.”  John Lennon (about The Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan)

Dylan had already moved on to other songs when his first masterpiece was released. Contrary to his first album, this album mostly has songs penned by the man himself.  With songs like Girl From The North Country, Masters Of War that are still a big part of Dylan’s concerts half a century later,

Recorded on April 24th–25th, July 9th, October 26th, November 1st and 15th, December 6th, 1962, and April 24th, 1963 at Columbia Records Studio A, 799 Seventh Avenue, New York City

The Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan is the second studio album by American singer-songwriter Bob Dylan, released on May 27, 1963 by Columbia Records. Whereas his debut album Bob Dylan had contained only two original songs, Freewheelin’ represented the beginning of Dylan’s writing contemporary words to traditional melodies. Eleven of the thirteen songs on the album are Dylan’s original compositions. The album opens with “Blowin’ in the Wind”, which became an anthem of the 1960s, and an international hit for folk trio Peter, Paul & Mary soon after the release of Freewheelin’. The album featured several other songs which came to be regarded as amongst Dylan’s best compositions and classics of the 1960s folk scene. Dylan’s lyrics embraced stories taken from the headlines about civil rights and he articulated anxieties about the fear of nuclear warfare. Balancing this political material were love songs, sometimes bitter and accusatory, and material that features surreal humor. Freewheelin’ showcased Dylan’s songwriting talent for the first time, propelling him to national and international fame. The success of the album and Dylan’s subsequent recognition led to his being named as “Spokesman of a Generation,” a label Dylan repudiated.

Jesca Hoop and Iron & Wine's Sam Beam

Without even listening to this record,  Sam Beam and Jesca Hoop are perfect complements for each other.

“Neither of us had written a song with anyone else, so we both were like, ‘How do we do this?’” Beam says. “Because our own styles are fixed things, it was kind of like, ‘What’s that going to be like when you put those two together?’”

“It was like walking around a forest in the dark,” adds Hoop. “A nice healthy forest.” “With one leg,” adds Beam.

Both Sam Beam, under his stage name Iron & Wine, and Hoop have found success in the past decade as idiosyncratic solo artists in a region of the musical universe somewhere close to Americana and folk, but often experimenting with rock, country, pop and even electronic music, and always penning interesting, ear-catching lyrics.

“There’s a song of hers called ‘Moon Rock Needle’ that I discovered,” says Beam. “The first line is, ‘There’s food at your house, let’s go to your house.’ After that I was hooked! And I just got enamored with her voice and her songwriting.

“For a while I had this seed of an idea for a project of duets,” he continues. “I like duets. I like the conversation element of it; you can have a monologue song that you’ve written for yourself, have two people sing it and it becomes a very different song. I thought we might sound really great together, so I asked her to come on tour.”

Jesca Hoop accepted, going on tour with Iron & Wine, performing as the opening act. But it was Hoop who made the first move to record music together. “I took a chance and asked him,” she says. “When we started singing together, it was just the most natural thing. It didn’t take much trying to find common ground.”

To join them on that common ground, they enlisted musicians, Wilco drummer Glenn Kotche, multi-instrumentalist Rob Burger (John Zorn, Lucinda Williams), violist Eyvind Kang and former Soul Coughing bassist Sebastian Steinberg. Together these musicians helped to create a nocturnal, lazy river for Beam and Hoop’s vocals to swim around and harmonize in.

“It’s all acoustic, but there are some songs that sound straight-up synthetic in a strange way,” Beam says. “There are some musical flourishes, but it’s more of a melodic, vocal record.”

The finished product, “Love Letter for Fire”, puts Hoop and Beam’s vocals and lyrics front and center for the listener to decipher.

“The recording process was a fluid joy,” says Hoop, “but the writing process was a lot of stumbling around in the dark. But you know when you’re in the dark and your eyes eventually adjust, then you can see? That’s what it was like.”

“It was a lot of emailing back and forth,” says Beam. “We would send poems, trade lines, just do things to get things started, and just have fun. Then we would get together and do tours, and hash things out across the table, because there’s a lot of nuances that don’t get translated over emails.”

On many of the songs, Beam and Hoop seem to be addressing each other as lovers. When asked about the possible discomfort of writing and singing a love song as platonic friends, Hoop quickly replies, “Have you ever been in love? Yes? Then let’s write a song about it right now. I’m sure there’s something you could say about it, because it’s something we can all relate to, and there’s endless material to draw from. From our own experiences, to the experiences of our parents, brothers and sisters, our friends and family.”

“We’ve both written love songs,” adds Beam, “but to have someone else’s experiences and thoughts come into play in your own songwriting. … I’d send her a line, and then she’d send me a line and I’d be like, ‘Oh, I never thought about that.’ I had to adjust. As a writer it’s fun, and when you have a man and woman singing together you automatically have a sexual tension whether you’re talking about love or not.”

“We still have different opinions on what [the songs] mean,” says Hoop. “I mean, every time you sing them, they say something different to you.”

“That’s kind of like a conversation though, isn’t it?” says Beam. “Most of the times you have a conversation with someone and you sort of think you know what they’re trying to say.” “Exactly,” says Hoop.

VARIOUS ARTISTS  –  Tribute to Pet Sounds

Austin, Texas – Brian Wilson was to perform the full album Pet Sounds at the Levitation music festival to celebrate the album’s 50th anniversary. In honour of this event festival curators The Reverberation Appreciation Society commissioned Al Lover to curate and produce a tribute to Brian Wilson’s career keystone.

Features artists such as Black Angels, Shannon & The Clams, Holy Wave, Cosmonauts and The Shivas.

‘Pet Sounds’ is a fountainhead from which the 15 artists on the album have all drank from as they developed their own musical roots, giving the tribute a rich and flavoursome sound. The tracklisting consists of the original thirteen songs that appeared on the ‘Pet Sounds’ album, with two bonus songs: ‘Good Vibrations’ and ‘Hang On To Your Ego’.

Holy Wave’s interpretation of ‘That’s Not Me’ is a sunbaked, organ filled hymn that is a minute longer than the original song. picking up where Brian Wilson left off in 1966. ‘That’s Not Me’ is a kaleidoscope of ear-pleasing notes that take the listener into an elevated listening experience of astonishing detail.

Shannon & The Clams capture Brian Wilson’s feelings of alienation in ‘I Just Wasn’t Made For These Times’, taking the climactic Beach Boys song and transform it into a garage rock epic with a surf rock spine. This track transcends time with both its subject matter and its deliverance.

The album opens with The Black Angels‘ rendition of Brian Wilson’s masterpiece ‘Good Vibrations’, which was started during the Pet Sounds sessions but not released on the album.

Catfish & the Bottlemen  –   The Ride

Catfish & the Bottlemen’s second album The Ride, mostly produced in LA by Dave Sardy is a collection of bold and riffing pop songs that verge on the anthemic.

“I feel like the last album was the support band, or even the soundcheck and this one’s the headliner,” says charismatic frontman Van McCann.

Glistening pop-rock anthems a plenty on this newest release from Wales’ Catfish and The Bottlemen. Driving and heartfelt odes to love and loss underpinned by shimmering production and emotive instrumental performances, impeccable vocal harmonies float atop the main vocal lines before the distortion kicks in, and breaks it all down into pulsing, grooving rock territory. Everything you’d come to expect, and more.

The Claypool Lennon Delirium  –  Monolith of Phobos

Two worlds have collided, and what glorious and odd worlds they are. After Primus and The Ghost of a Saber Tooth Tiger completed a successful summer tour, Les Claypool and Sean Lennon decided to combine their abstract talents into a project called The Claypool Lennon Delirium. Their efforts thus far have spawned the upcoming full-length release Monolith of Phobos.

MUDCRUTCH  – 2

Mudcrutch release their second album entitled ‘2’ via Reprise Records. The album is the follow up to the band’s 2008 eponymous debut which Rolling Stone called “a country-rock instant classic” in a rave four star review. Mudcrutch was initially formed in 1970 in Gainesville, Florida and is the precursor to the legendary Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers. Tom Petty (bass / vocals), Tom Leadon (guitar / vocals), Benmont Tench (keyboards / vocals), Mike Campbell (guitar / vocals), and Randall Marsh (drums / vocals) make up the band’s current line-up. In 1974, Mudcrutch was signed to Shelter Records and moved to Los Angeles where they released one single, ‘Depot Street,’ to very little fanfare. The band broke up in 1975 and could have settled for being a legend, but instead Mudcrutch rose from the ashes in 2008 to remind us that the golden age of rock and roll bands still had a few treasures to unearth. Their debut, made some thirty-three years later, was an unexpected hit. All members of Mudcrutch contribute songs on their new album ‘2.’ The album includes seven originals written by Tom Petty, with band members Mike Campbell, Tom Leadon, Randall Marsh and Benmont Tench composing one each.
LP – 180 Gram vinyl in Gatefold Sleeve with limited edition art print.

THE MYRRORS – ENTRANCED EARTH

If you dig the Black Angels, and all things desert psyche check out The Myrrors new album. There’s a confounding nature to the comfort constructed by The Myrrors throughout the flawless forty minutes of ‘Entranced Earth’, the third full length album from the transcendentallytuned, Tuscon-tied desert die-hards. So subtle is the albumopening invocation of ‘Mountain Mourning’ that it threatens to never descend from its skybound view, leaving the track that follows, ‘Liberty Is In the Street’, to offer the album’s first, fading glimpse of solid ground. ‘On your feet or on your knees’ goes the mantra-like vocal drone, though the effect is likely to bring to mind the Moody Blues more than Blue Öyster Cult (at least, the path of The Myrrors seems to include traces of the footprints left by the onetime Harvard professor given an early eulogy by the Blues on ‘Legend of a Mind’).

CREEDENCE CLEARWATER REVIVAL – LIVE AT FILLMORE WEST CLOSE NIGHT JULY 4TH 1971

Radio broadcast from late period Creedence – all the hits done really well.

Tommy, The Who’s defining, breakthrough concept album – a full-blown rock opera about a deaf, dumb and blind boy that launched the band to international superstardom reissued in multi format editions.

Originally released in May 1969, The Who were at a career crossroads, they were known mainly as a singles band but this project launched them as a serious ‘albums band’ and has now sold over 20 million copies as well as regularly turning up in lists of the most influential albums of all time.

It’s all too easy to go, “Yeah, The Who’s Tommy is great, love it.” But just put it into perspective for a moment. This was one man’s imagination, one man’s vision and it was groundbreaking. Add into the mix, Roger, Keith and John, who along with Pete, created what is one of the most amazing records of the rock era. It was released on 23rd May 1969 and every home should have one…

From the opening chords of ‘Overture’ you know you are in for something different.  But try imagining what it was like to hear this for the very first time in the last week of May 1969 when The Who released their magnum opus, the much vaunted, Tommy. To add to the sense of wonderment ‘Overture’ features a French Horn, previously the sole preserve of the Beatles in popular music, but here played by The Who’s bass player, John Entwistle.

This was rock music, but not as we knew it. It wasn’t the first extended musical piece in rock, but it was the first to have the audacity to bill itself as an opera.  Being a double album it certainly demanded to be taken seriously; to this point there had been few such lengthy albums, even ones that were not a cohesive piece of work. With its triptych of a fold out sleeve that was a lavish presentation of Mike McInnerney’s fabulous painting it all helped to make this an even more auspicious musical work.

A quick check of the album credits showed that all but four of the 24 tracks were written by Pete Townshend. It’s another reason why this monster of a work should command such respect. Few individuals had the ability, or the vision, to create such a complex and such a long piece of work; Pete’s inspiration came from the teachings of the Meher Baba.

Tommy took six months to record, and another two months to mix, while not unheard of even as long ago as 1969, but it was even then very unusual. With layers of Townshend’s acoustic guitar and the numerous overdubs Tommy was for the time a sonically very different album from most everything else. It’s another example of the passage of time fooling us into believing that this was not as significant an album as it was. So much has happened since the release of Tommy that it dulls the collective retrospective – what is now commonplace was then a step outside the accepted, a step into uncharted territory.

‘Pinball Wizard’, ‘Go to the Mirror!’, ‘I’m Free’, ‘Christmas’, and ‘See Me, Feel Me’ all came out as singles, with the first and last becoming hits in both America and the UK. ‘See Me, Feel Me’ was one of the highpoints of The Who’s appearance at Woodstock – has there ever been a better rock vocalist than Roger Daltrey.  If  The Who doing Tommy at Woodstock doesn’t send shivers down the spine try checking that you are still alive.

Coming after The Who Sell Out in 1967 it marked a complete change in style with Pete Townshend’s lengthy conceptual narrative brought exciting new opportunities to rock music. Tommy was and remains to be an ambitious, complex and controversial work, which was initially banned by the BBC. This new Deluxe and Super Deluxe version of the album comes with a wealth of previously unheard material in the form of 20 demos from Pete Townshend’s archive and also a live performance of Tommy from 1969 taken from tapes that infamously Townshend asked the band’s sound engineer to burn!

18 of the previously unheard and thought to be long lost live tracks are taken from a live show at the Capital Theatre, Ottowa, Canada on October the 15th 1969. Three others, I’m Free, Tommy’s Holiday Camp and We’re Not Gonna Take It were lost due to tape reels being changed during the show so are taken from later shows of the same era.

As discussed at length in Pete Townshend’s autobiography the tapes were all supposed to be destroyed but were kept by long time Who sound man Bob Pridden despite Pete’s instructions. The Who: Tommy: Super Deluxe Boxset

Neil Young will release a new album, entitled EARTH, on June 17th via Reprise Records. The album features performances of songs from a range of Young’s albums, including last year’s The Monsanto Years, 1990’s Ragged Glory, and 1970’s After the Gold Rush. The audio was captured during Young’s 2015 tour with The Promise of the Real, fronted by Lukas Nelson (vocals/guitar) and Micah Nelson (guitar, vocals) – Willie Nelson’s sons. The tour Included Neil Young performing solo and with the band for a full electric show.
A new take on some of Young’s most beloved songs, EARTH features the live recordings, along with added musical overdubs, as well as sounds of the earth, such as city sounds like car horns, sounds of insects, and animal sounds from bears, birds, crickets, bees, horses, cows – creating a very strange, yet beautiful atmosphere.
“Ninety-eight uninterrupted minutes long, EARTH flows as a collection of 13 songs from throughout my life, songs I have written about living here on our planet together,” says Young. “Our animal kingdom is well represented in the audience as well, and the animals, insects, birds, and mammals actually take over the performances of the songs at times.”

Car Seat Headrest by Philip Cosores

Since Will Toledo’s 2015 breakthrough, Teens of Style, he’s been playing to growing crowds (including at Hype Hotel) and prepping a proper follow-up LP,  titled Teens Of Denial from which comes this new single. “Both gutsily-honest and damned catchy,” . in a few weeks, Matador will release Car Seat Headrest’s new album, and expectations loom large and heavy. I was really writing full songs, or before I knew how to play any musical instruments, I was writing lyrics and coming up with fake tracklists for albums.” He got his first guitar in junior high, and by the time he got to high school he’d filled a journal and half with song ideas. Next, it was a laptop and a drum kit with which he started making albums, giving them to his friends when they were completed. “It wasn’t really making an impact, and people weren’t listening to it,” he says. “So I started Car Seat Headrest just as a purely online thing.”

http://

How’s this for a generational statement: Will Toledo is a depressed, directionless fuck-up with nothing to show for himself besides his good taste and incisive wit, both of which he liberally applies to the mountainous terrain that is guitar-driven indie-rock history until he’s chiseled his own dour visage into the landscape, Mount Rushmore style. Even though Car Seat Headrest’s Bandcamp page is more than a dozen releases deep, the momentous Teens Of Denial feels like a coming-out party for slacker music’s latest poet laureate. Just when his genre seemed to have fizzled out, Toledo has grabbed the torch from his heroes and set it ablaze again.

Car Seat Headrest — Teens of Denial

Following last year’s releases of The Essential Van Morrison and The Complete Them 1964-1967, Legacy Recordings continues to mine the Van Morrison back catalogue with the June 10th releases of the remastered 2-CD or 2-LP It’s Too Late to Stop Now and the 3-CD/1-DVD box set It’s Too Late to Stop Now…Volumes II, III, IV & DVD.

It’s Too Late to Stop Now, of course, is Van Morrison’s 1974 double live album with his Caledonia Soul Orchestra, capturing concert recordings from his May to July 1973 tour at Los Angeles’ famed Troubadour, the Santa Monica Civic Center, and London’s Rainbow Theatre.  The remastered original album will be available on both CD and vinyl, while the CDs of Volumes II-IV collect previously unreleased concert recordings from those three venues.  The DVD included in the 3-CD set contains professionally-shot footage from the Rainbow Theatre stand which originally aired on the BBC in the U.K. but has never before been commercially available.

The original It’s Too Late was compiled by Morrison and co-producer Ted Templeman from eight sets of live performances and was famously free of any subsequent studio overdubs.  Volumes II-IV returns to those original performances, first captured on two-inch 16-track analog tapes, as newly remastered by Guy Massey.  None of the tracks on this set are duplicated from the performances on the original album.

“I am getting more into performing,” Morrison commented in 1973.  “It’s incredible…. All of a sudden I felt like ‘you’re back into performing’ and it just happened like that…. A lot of times in the past I’ve done gigs and it was rough to get through them. But now the combination seems to be right and it’s been clicking a lot.”  Supported by his 11-piece Caledonia Soul Orchestra (containing two horns and four strings among its players), Morrison revisited his greatest classics to that point including “Gloria,” “Domino,” “Brown-Eyed Girl,” “Into the Mystic,” “Warm Love,” “The Way Young Lovers Do,” “Moondance,” and many more.  He also paid tribute to his own musical heroes with well-selected covers of Sam Cooke, Hank Williams, Ray Charles, and even Sesame Street‘s Joe Raposo.

Both the remastered edition of It’s Too Late to Stop Now and the new box set It’s Too Late to Stop Now… Volumes  II, III, IV & DVD will be available from Legacy on June 10th.

TERRY REID  –  The Other Side Of The River

– Remastered from the original analog tapes
– Track notes by Terry Reid
– 6 never before heard Reid compositions, plus 5 very different alternate takes – all previously unreleased.

British musician Terry Reid is a relatively unsung legend. With his incredible voice (that earned him the nickname “Superlungs”), spot- on songwriting, and underrated guitar skills, Reid invented new sounds and others followed suit. His 1973 LP, River, is an under-the- radar but deeply loved album. Our special new release, The Other Side Of The River, features all previously unreleased material from the River sessions, including six never-before-heard Reid compositions and five very different alternate takes of tracks from River.

Over the decades, as River went in and out of print, there were rumors of a mythological double album’s worth of unreleased material. The rumors turned out to be true, as the entire album was recorded twice: once with British producer Eddy Offord and again with the legendary Tom Dowd. The sessions captured Reid’s free-associative mix of folk, blues, rock, jazz, bossa-nova, soul, and samba, recalling at times Tim Buckley and Van Morrison, while featuring some remarkable guests including Gilberto Gil on percussion, Ike & Tina Turner’s Ikettes on vocals, and David Lindley, of psych band Kaleidoscope, on violin.

The Other Side Of The River includes songs that even Terry had forgotten – rockers in the style of the River track “Dean,” Latin grooves with percussionist Willie Bobo, and beautifully sparse vocal material not unlike David Crosby’s If Only I Could Remember My Name and John Martyn’s Solid Air.

Reid’s vocal prowess earned him offers to front both Led Zeppelin and Deep Purple, but he turned down both opportunities to carve out a distinctive solo career. Instead, he rocked on the sidelines, ultimately touring with Cream and Fleetwood Mac, writing songs for CSNY, and opening for The Rolling Stones on their 1969 tour.

More recently, Terry’s songs have been covered by a number of younger artists including the Raconteurs, and his voice can be heard on DJ Shadow’s track “Listen”. This spring he will be touring the East Coast and U.K. Though his “superlungs” would have no doubt served Zepp well, perhaps his solo status allowed him to be more experimental and nuanced than he would’ve been able to be as a mainstream frontman, and for that we are grateful.

The Other Side Of The River stands alone as a fresh and utterly groundbreaking Terry Reid gem.

JOSEFIN OHRN AND THE LIBERATION / GNOOMES REPETITIONS EP

Sweden’s Josefin Ohrn and The Liberation and Russia’s Gnoomes released two outstanding albums at the tail end of 2015, and Rocket Recordings are pleased to be bringing you this special split EP entitled ‘Repetitions’. Josefin Ohrn and The Liberation’s side starts with a radio edit of their live favorite ‘Green Blue Fields’ – a great slice of psychedelic disco pop that calls to mind a psyched out Blondie’s ‘Heart of glass’. Then for the first time on vinyl ‘Lucid Sapphire’ – a punked up, motorik driven, rock stomper that first appeared as the b-side of their digital only single ‘Sunday Afternoon’. The side is finished with a stunning cosmic-dance remix of their ‘hit’ single Take me Beyond by label mates Gnoomes. That leads us nicely into Gnoomes’s side which starts with ‘Myriads Of Bees’ – a new version of the track ‘Myriads’ which featured on their debut album ‘Ngan!’ This new version sees the band strip the song back to a minimal kosmiche pulse with repetitive mind altering effects. Then for the first time on vinyl the radio edit of their ‘hit’ single ‘Roadhouse’, this is the version of the track that got them noticed by countless BBC 6 Music DJs. Then the final track of the EP sees Josefin Ohrn and The Liberation return the ‘remix’ favour pushing the original motorik groove of ‘Roadhouse’ into an addictive heavy kraut groove beat, overlaying it with head spinning synths and fuzz guitar.

CAR SEAT HEADREST – TEENS OF DENIAL

‘Teens of Denial’ is the thirteenth album in Car Seat Headrest’s (aka 23-year-old Will Toledo) oeuvre, second on Matador, and first to be recorded in a proper studio with a full band and producer (Steve Fisk). On Denial, Toledo moves from bedroom pop to something approaching classic-rock grandeur and huge (if detailed and personal) narrative ambitions, with nods to the Cars, Pavement, Jonathan Richman, Wire, and William Onyeabor. By turns tender and caustic, empathetic and solipsistic, literary and vernacular, profound and profane, self-loathing and self-aggrandizing, he conjures a specifically 21st century mindset, a product of information overload, the loneliness it can foster, and the escape music can provide. At the heart of the album sits the 11:32 ‘Ballad of the Costa Concordia,’ which has more musical ideas than most whole albums (and at that length, it uses them all). Horns, keyboards, and elegant instrumental interludes set off art-garage moments; vivid vocal harmonies follow punk frenzy. The selfish captain of the capsized cruise liner in the Mediterranean in 2013 becomes a metaphor for struggles of the individual in society, as experienced by one hungover young man on the verge of adulthood.

TANYA DONELLY – SWAN SONG SERIES

Tanya Donelly is a singer-songwriter and founding member of three of the most successful bands of the post-punk era. At the age of 16, she and stepsister Kristin Hersh formed Throwing Muses, which became the first American band ever signed to the influential British label 4AD. Not only did the Muses‘ dreamy, swirling guitar sound prove highly influential on many of the alternative acts to emerge in their wake, but they also made any number of unprecedented advances into the male-dominated world of underground rock. Donelly later sidelined with Pixies bassist Kim Deal to form the Breeders, appearing on the debut LP, Pod. She later exited both the Breeders and Throwing Muses to form her own band, Belly. After issuing a pair of well-received EPs, Belly released their full-length debut, Star — a superb collection of luminous, fairy tale-like guitar pop songs — and for the first time in her career, Tanya Donelly earned commercial success commensurate to her usual critical accolades. Not only did the record go gold on the strength of the hit single ‘Feed the Tree’ but the band even garnered a Grammy nomination for Best New Artist. Donelly would eventually disband Belly to raise her two daughters. She still found time to write and record music as a solo artist – Beautysleep, Whiskey Tango Ghosts and This Hungry Life were all exceptional albums and enjoyed critical success. The Swan Song Series is a collection of songs in which Donelly collaborated with friends, musicians and authors such as Rick Moody, Robyn Hitchcock, John Wesley Harding, Damon Krukowski and Naomi Yang (Damon + Naomi/Galaxie 500), Bill Janovitz (Buffalo Tom), Tom Gorman (Belly), and Claudia Gonson (Magnetic Fields), and explored an impressive range that wasn’t always captured on previous albums. This exclusive collection includes the first 5 self-released digital EP’s and 7 brand new, previously unreleased, tracks on a 31 song set.

MUTUAL BENEFIT  –  Skip A Sinking Stone

‘Skip A Sinking Stone’, Mutual Benefit (aka Jordan Lee), is released via Transgressive Records.

This new album is a two-part meditation on impermanence that also acts as a portrait of growing up. Mutual Benefit’s work has been praised as being vulnerable and warmhearted. This release has a similar sensibility, patiently built from carefully chosen lines illustrated by lush astral folk and intricately composed arrangements that manage to appear effortless.

“I kept coming back to how nice that was, throwing these stones against the water,” says Lee. “I thought it was a fitting metaphor for the endeavours I have in my life – sometimes they work out and sometimes they don’t. I think it’s a good exercise in accepting impermanence and failure and these things that are constant, and yet the activity of skipping stones is really relaxing and beautiful.” Each stone ultimately sinks but, as Lee sings on the album’s zenith, as the cycle ends and repeats again, all we can do is maintain the hope that it’s ‘Not For Nothing’.

Image of Mountains And Rainbows - Particles

MOUNTAINS and RAINBOWS

Last summer, John Dwyer came back from an Oh Sees tour talking about a fantastic band he’d played with in Detroit called Mountains and Rainbows. What followed him home was a double-LP’s worth of shopworn weirdness and a delightfully loose attitude that must have something to do with the ecstasy of a Midwestern summer. These backyard freaks jam into the twilight, led by a vocal quaver belted to the cheap seats, a groove and a grin and a heaping spoonful of “damn, aren’t you glad we came out tonight?” Vibrant and confusing like the insane-o cover artwork that appears to be constructed of many layers of fluorescent duct tape.

Careening from the mellow chugger vibe on “How You Spend Your Time” to the tightly wound twitch of “Dying To Meet You,” Mountains and Rainbows stretch their legs deep into the strange, with a dark oddness lurking in the corners of tunes like weirdo highlight “With Beefheart.” Particles is a great addition to a little journey of one’s own, perhaps, and just in time for the sunlit afternoons to come.

FIR  –  SUMMER WASN’T THERE / WINTER DOESN’T CARE

Limited 7″ (200 copies) with CD (CD contains Stereo, Mono & Instrumental mixes), and digital download. We have 50 copies only !!! Alt pop super-group FIR combines the songwriting genius of Brent Rademaker from Beachwood Sparks and Matt Piucci from Rain Parade, with the extraordinary talents of Rob Campanella from The Brian Jonestown Massacre and Nelson Bragg from the Brian Wilson Band. On this record, the bittersweet combo is made complete by the smooth harmony vocals of the Allah-Las. Sounding something like a sugary, drugged out Beatles, FIR’s first 7″

Image of Methyl Ethel - Oh Inhuman Spectacle

METHYL ETHEL  –  OH INHUMAN SPECTACLE

New to 4AD, Australian trio Methyl Ethel’s celebrated debut album is being given a worldwide release. Hailing from the remote fringes of Perth in Western Australia, band linchpin Jake Webb – like 4AD peers Grimes and Bradford Cox before him – wrote, played and recorded everything on ‘Oh Inhuman Spectacle’.

Crafted in isolation, the album’s understated psychedelic pop quickly drew plaudits, leading Webb to recruit Chris Wright (drums) and Thom Stewart (bass) – friends from the tight-knit and thriving music scene in Perth – to help realise the songs live as a full-fledged band.

Having gained notable success in Australia including being nominated for the prestigious Australian Music Prize and taking Laneway Festival by storm, Methyl Ethel are now poised to take their music overseas with the worldwide release of ‘Oh Inhuman Spectacle’ and a huge run of touring in both Europe and North America to coincide.

Like a modern, indiefied iteration of Syd Barrett with the melodic intonations of the ghosts of post-punk. Woozy rhythms and fuzzed-out basses, twirling arpeggios meet chugging guitars and soaring strained vocal melodies. Definitely one to keep an eye on.

BRAIDS – COMPANION

Limited Copies come with a Arbutus Records Sampler CD. Braids are a three-piece experimental pop band from Montreal. In the spring of 2015 they released ‘Deep In The Iris’, their standout third record. ‘Companion’ is the band’s latest 4 track EP, written during the ‘Deep In The Iris’ sessions, and completed during a burst of creative energy in August 2015. Here Braids use the palette of ‘Deep In The Iris’ to paint decidedly different vistas – joy, disaffection, thunderous explosion to delicate introspection, the minimalistic power of ‘Companion’ to the patient blossoming of ‘Sweet World’. Distinct in their own right, these 4 songs are not to be dismissed as B-sides, outtakes, or the lesser of a group of songs. Though it uses ‘Deep In The Iris’ as a compositional guidepost, Companion is a breath-taking journey all of its own.

MANIC STREET PREACHERS  – EVERYTHING MUST GO 20 Box Set

20 Year remastered anniversary of the classic Manics’ album ‘Everything Must Go’. In coming back after the disappearance of guitarist Richey Edwards, ‘Everything Must Go’ had to be special. Thankfully, the album shows extreme dignity in the face of adversity, with its big, Phil Spector-ish production and the pure lyrical perfection of ‘A Design For Life’ (the least patronising, most spot on discussion of the working class ever to reach number two in the charts). Richey Edward’s influence is still evident, as ‘Small Black Flowers That Grow In The Sky’ is a pit of despair, but it is much more subtle than anything on ‘The Holy Bible’, delicately comprised of James’ vocals and a harp. Their love of art and literature continues, referencing Sylvia Plath (‘The Girl Who Wanted To Be God’), war photographer Kevin Carter, and artist Willem De Kooning (on “Interiors”, surely one of Nicky Wire’s best bass parts since ‘La Tristesse Durera’). It’s little surprise that this was the album to finally shove the Manics into the mainstream.
2CD – Double CD remastered version comprising the remastered album and the Nynex Arena audio.
4LP / Box – Deluxe 12″ x 12″ box set containing the original album remastered by James Dean Bradfield and Tim Young on CD and 180 Gram vinyl. The single B sides and a 40 page book complete this stunning set. It includes
CD1 Everything Must Go remastered and B sides

Image of Various Artists - Day Of The Dead

VARIOUS ARTISTS  –  DAY of the DEAD

A celebration of the Grateful Dead’s music, Day of the Dead was created and curated by brothers Aaron and Bryce Dessner of The National.

For both Aaron and Bryce, the Grateful Dead were a gateway to playing music together; the first music the brothers investigated deeply. The two recall their first-ever jam session at 14 years old with The National’s future drummer Bryan Devendorf playing the Dead’s ‘Eyes of the World’ for several hours in Bryan’s attic in suburban Ohio. The brothers were drawn not just to the Dead’s songwriting, but also to the detail, spontaneity, and depth in the instrumentation. A life-long love affair with the Dead, shared with the Devendorfs, was born in those teenage years and crested when The National were invited to play a HeadCount.org fundraiser with Bob Weir in March 2012. The band assembled for this event learned over 25 Grateful Dead songs, and most of those players went on to form the “house band” heard on many of Day of the Dead’s tracks.

The compilation is a wide-ranging tribute to the songwriting and experimentalism of the Dead which took four years to record, and features over 60 artists from varied musical backgrounds, 59 tracks and is almost 6 hours long. Produced by Aaron Dessner, and co-produced by Bryce Dessner and Josh Kaufman, many of the tracks feature an all-star house band made up of Aaron, Bryce, fellow National bandmates and brothers Scott and Bryan Devendorf, Josh Kaufman, and Conrad Doucette along with Sam Cohen and Walter Martin. The record shows the broad reaching impact and legacy of the Grateful Dead, both culturally and musically.

Day of the Dead will be released digitally and on 5xCDs on May 20th. A limited edition vinyl boxed set will follow later in the year. All profits will help fight for AIDS / HIV and related health issues around the world through the Red Hot Organization. This is the 20th album of original music produced by Red Hot to further its mission and the follow up to 2009’s Dark Was The Night (4AD), a 32-track, multi-artist compilation also produced by Aaron and Bryce for Red Hot. Dark Was The Night has raised over $1.5 million to date for the organizations fighting AIDS to date.

Image of Marissa Nadler - Strangers

MARISSA NADLER  –  STRANGERS

For more than 12 years Marissa Nadler has perfected her own take on the exquisitely sculpted gothic American songform. On her seventh full-length, Strangers, released 20th May on Bella Union , she has shed any self-imposed restrictions her earlier albums adhered to, stepped through a looking glass, and created a truly monumental work.

Today Nadler has shared “Janie in Love”, one of her most texturally rich songs to date and one that updates her signature sound with some of the most prominently featured drumming of her career. Her talent for powerfully juxtaposing the ominous and the beautiful is on full display.

In the two years since 2014’s elegiac, autobiographical “July”, Nadler has reconciled the heartbreak so often a catalyst for her songwriting. Turning her writing to more universal themes, Nadler dives deep into a surreal, apocalyptic dreamscape. Her lyrics touch upon the loneliness and despair of the characters that inhabit them. These muses are primal, fractured, disillusioned, delicate, and alone. They are the unified voice of this record, the titular “strangers.”

Once again partnered with July producer Randall Dunn (Sunn O))), Earth, Black Mountain) Nadler has created an album equal in sonic quality to the apocalyptic lyrical tone that covers its 44 minutes. In places her voice and guitar play off subsonic synths, while elsewhere, a pulsing drumbeat launches the songs off into an intense, confrontational place.

FEWS  –

Swedish / American four-piece FEWS have been making some serious waves ahead of their debut album. Specialising in propulsive, motoric noise-pop, producer Dan Carey (Bat For Lashes, Sexwitch, TOY, Kate Tempest et all) discovered the band via a mysterious Soundcloud link and promptly invited the band to his South London studio where debut single ‘Ill’ quickly followed on Carey’s Speedy Wunderground label.

Having joined the ranks of the Play It Again Sam label their own brand of malevolent post-punk continues to evolve and thrill with follow up singles ‘The Zoo’ and ‘100 Goosebumps’ that has seen the band bear resemblance to DIIV and Faust.

“Sonically charged post-punk that’s equal parts Interpol, DIIV, The Walkmen and A Place To Bury Strangers. Anthems for the disaffected in waiting”

New Gold Dream Box Set Exploded Pack Shot 530

On July 29th ‘New Gold Dream (81-82-83-84)’ will be released as a new 5CD / 1 DVD super deluxe box set including a newly remastered version of the classic album, plus a further four discs of B-sides, edits, extended versions and previously unreleased BBC sessions.

The 1982 album was the Scottish band’s second on the Virgin label and the first to feature drummer Mel Gaynor (recruited after producer Peter Walsh declared himself unsatisfied with Mike Ogletree’s playing). New Gold Dream launched Simple Minds’ career worldwide and delivered the hit singles Promised You A Miracle, Glittering Prize and Someone Somewhere In Summertime.

The new super deluxe edition of New Gold Dream boasts an abundance of material. Disc one features a 2016 remaster (by Andrew Walter at Abbey Road) approved by Charlie Burchill and the second disc gathers 12-inch remixes and instrumentals of the singles, a few of which enjoy their CD debut.

Various edits and B-sides can be found on the third CD in the set while disc four features previously unreleased BBC John Peel and Kid Jensen radio sessions, recorded in February and August 1982.

All ten tracks on disc five are previously unreleased; made up of alternative mixes and demos and the icing on the cake is the sixth and final disc which is a DVD, featuring Charlie Burchill and Ronald Prent’s 5.1 surround sound mix, first released on the now long out-of-print DVD-Audio in 2005. This mix of the album is a unique ‘full duration’ mix which is different to the standard version. DVD also includes promo videos and a few Top of the Pops performances. Note, this is a DVD-V unlike the DVD-A/V disc from previous Simple Minds box sets.

The super deluxe includes a 36-page booklet with sleeve notes by journalist and broadcaster, Billy Sloan including new interviews with Jim Kerr and Charlie Burchill.

The reissue is being issued on two-CD deluxe and vinyl LP. The DVD content is also put out as a blu-ray audio.

New Gold Dream is reissued on 29 July 2016.

The DVD contains the famed 2005 ‘5.1 surround sound’ mix of the album, plus promo videos and BBC appearances, not to mention a stunning booklet with new interviews and rare photos.

The release will also be available in various versions: CD, 2CD set, 180gm LP and Blu-ray.

Typically, there will be usually quite a gap between an artist’s debut and their sophomore effort. After all, there’s all the promotion to handle, touring, not to mention the actual writing and recording portions. But Melbourne’s Hayden Calnin had too much to say to wait longer than a few weeks. Just over two months on from releasing his debut record, Cut Love Pt 1 , Calnin is back with Cut Love Pt. 2.

“Continuing on from Cut Love Pt. 1, Cut Love Pt. 2 is an exploration into a very confusing time of my life where I was feeling a little lost and off the rails,” explains Calnin of the new album. “We’ve all been there at some point so I think much of the sentiment behind the album is something a lot of people will find relatable. Pt. 2 has a bigger sound than Pt. 1 and is  also the first release that I’ve worked on with another producer. I’m really proud of what Tim Carr and I have created.”

What they’ve created are nine tracks of adventurous and alluring folktronica. Album opener “Caution Cares” brings to mind comparisons of both Bon Iver and the quieter moments of TV on the Radio, while a song like single “Ultra-Beast” highlights Calnin’s husk vocals in a neo-R&B setting. A surprising cover of Elvis Presley song “Hound Dog” turns the song on its head, swinging it from a rocking blues number to a smoky indie brooder. But the delicacy of “Dinosaur Stampede” perhaps best sums up the entire thread of the record, an effort that’s at once heartbreaking and redemptive, alternatively slight and momentously powerful.

Cut Love Pt. 2 is out this Friday, May 13th,

‘Cut Love’ gets a second outing as Hayden Calnin releases part two of his highly acclaimed album. Having graced us with part one earlier this year,

He is currently preparing to embark on an album launch tour of Australia, however we have been promised some European dates for later this year!
