Marika Hackman recorded this in a tunnel somewhere in the North East, Her lyrics, and her self-directed videos, reveal an appetite for the grotesque. In an early online hit “Bath Is Black“, written when she was 17, she sank into a tub of poster paint and “had black bogeys for days”. And the video for the new track Animal Fear will feature an evisceration of some kind ,a Facebook shot reveals her 1966 Fender Mustang spattered with fake blood. Severed limbs, decomposition and emotional self-sabotage continue to inspire her – in the new song Monday Afternoon she is “breathing in the sickly sweet of my rotting skin”. She wrote the song about the time her appendix burst.
At just 21 years of age Icelandic singer-songwriter Ásgeir has become a sensation in his domestic music scene – staggeringly, almost 10% of the Icelandic population now own his debut album ‘Dyrd í dauðathogn’ – the English version, translated by John Grant, will be released worldwide as ‘In The Silence’ and is out now.
CHVRCHES released their highly anticipated debut “The Bones of What We Believe”. last year To promote the release of the record, the band stopped by Later…with Jools Holland to perform two songs off the album. During those latter months of the year they covered Whitney Houston, and forcefully called out online misogyny. After all that, the Scottish trio’s next move was relatively low key Vocalist Lauren Mayberry led the band through energetic though fairly straightforward renditions of “The Mother We Share” (above) and “Lies”.
Icelandic singer songwriter ASGEIR covers the Nirvana song “Heart Shaped Box” he has a new album out “In the Silence” he is one of Icelands biggest ever selling artists Ásgeir Trausti is still on the rise here, but in his home country of Iceland he’s already massive. His debut album was the fastest-selling in Icelandic history; reportedly 1 in 10 people in the country own it, which seems more insane the more you think about it (Taylor Swift would have to sell 12 times what she does to achieve that here). If you want to conquer America, though, you could do worse than to nod to a band like Nirvana. This haunting, chilly cover with Ásgeir’s emotional falsetto shows what all the hÿþe is about.
Hozier made his major american network this year on the Letterman Show, He performed the title track to his amazing debut EP , The signs were there in how his ‘Take Me To Church’ single broke big online at the tail end of 2013, but nobody could quite grasp how huge Hozier was about to become in the States. Andrew Hozier-Byrne has kept things modest. His mum designs the album art. His songs aren’t massively showy, instead shouting bold truths without being preachy. A self-titled LP made the top five on these shores, but it was in North America where things took charge. Charting at No2 in the American Charts was one thing, but it’s held the #1 spot on the Folk Chart for eight solid weeks, ranking as the biggest Irish breakthrough. Also ‘Take Me To Church’ ended up ranking as the most-streamed single online. Jamie Milton
St Paul and the Broken Bones from the State of Alabama,
St. Paul & The Broken Bones is not a band that’s easily ignored. The Birmingham-based sextet gets in your face—literally—during shows, and manages to transfer that that intensity to each of the 12 songs on their debut LP “HalfThe City”. With strong roots in the Pentecostal church, frontman Paul Janeway seems to deliver entire sermons in three-and-a-half-minute opuses throughout record. He narrates entire parables like “Grass is Greener” and “Like A Mighty River” in his emotive tenor that evokes both preacher and crooner. And the built-in, two-man brass band arrangements add depth, rhythm and soul to “Half The City”, especially on tracks like “Broken Bones & Pocket Change” and “Sugar Dyed.”
Inspired by funk and R&B acts like Prince, Sam Cooke and Otis Redding, St. Paul & The Broken Bones understands the power music has to make you weep, dance and rejoice, sometimes all at the same time; each track on “Half The City” serves one or more of those roles. So while the band released its first EP, “Greetings from St.Paul & The Broken Bones”, in 2013, it’s this full-length debut that serves as the ultimate conversion for believers and heretics, alike.
With the excellent album release of 2012 “Stray Ashes” Jesse or JBM has followed up with his first track in a long while, a new charged sound with more electric guitars and tight drum sound ,check out jessemarchant.com for a free download of this song.
You may know Jesse Marchant by another name, JBM, by which he released his excellent 2012 album, “Stray Ashes”, . He’s back with, “All Your Promise”, that has a much more charged sound filled with bigger guitar riffs and tight percussion compared to some of his older work. I like it. I just love his vocal there is passion and a feeling of hurt there. Look for a new album from Jesse Marchant later on this year.
from the latest album ” Swimmin Time “ that came out mid August, the two musicians produce a wonderful sound with amazing songs, Shovels & Rope and this great video from the album . These two have always been able to crank out jaw dropping songs with just the two of them. Listen to “The Devil Is All Around” now and look out for Swimmin’ Time .
tripped out guitar sound with woozy organ driven psych sound with a melodic approach,
Not content with being lumped in with the Manchester current psych revival, Stockport five-piece Blossoms have opted to invent their very own sub-genre: Ethereal Nostalgic Sonance.
It’s a suitably florid, OTT description for a band clearly not lacking in imagination – the sort of imagination that might well restore your faith in guitar bands. Having first caught our attention with their stunning track Blow and natty sartorial choices (turtlenecks and jewellery a la Derek Trotter), the band take the current trend for all things psych and weld it to chiming pop classicism. There’s something of a Doors-ish mysticism about them; frontman Tom Ogden’s deep vocals twisting through woozy, lysergic melodies and guitar lines, while a distinctive organ sound further cranks up the sonorous vibes.
Amid all that artfully constructed psych haze, however, it’s the band’s winning, Merseybeat-esque pop sensibility that ultimately shines through: tracks such as Madeleine and You Pulled A Gun On Me already sounding like keystones for a 2014 psych summer of love.
The band have bagged an impressive number of supports slots recently, opening for the likes of Howling Bells, The Orwells and The Rifles, but it surely won’t be long until they’re a blockbuster, major headline draw on their own terms.
