Continuing the recent glut of exciting new Australian bands is Body Type, the only surprise is that they’re from Sydney rather than the musical hot-bed of Melbourne. The debut Body Type EP is out next month, and ahead of its release the band have this week shared their latest single, Palms.
Lead vocalist, Sophie McComish explains the idea behind the track, “Palms comes from observing moments of concatenation, when everything in your life lines up in a way that feels like the universe is trying to tell you something”. Musically, there’s a winning blend of dream-pop haze and garage energy, the whole track bounces on one of the year’s most thrilling drum beats, pounding out as guitars and vocal melodies entwine and dance together. It might be a track about fate, yet listening to Body Type their destiny is surely in their own hands: this is a band on the verge of something very special.
This video was filmed in the Blue Mountains region. Body Type would like to acknowledge the Darug and Gundungurra people, who are the Traditional Custodians of this land. We pay our respects to Elders past, present and emerging, and acknowledge that sovereignty has never been ceded
Sophie Hutchings is a Sydney pianist and composer who has developed into a performer of unique beauty and internationalrenown. Her music has been described as beautifully fragile along with a deep sense of urgency making for many shades… Her Compositions are a blend of Piano, Strings, Field recordings along with elements of woodwind percussion and ethereal vocals.
With the waves we pass through upon the onset of sleep, we sometimes fall into that feathery gateway of drowsiness to then enter that imaginary world that one loses dominion over.
‘Living Light extended’ travels from the sway of sleep into the open terrain of our narrative vivid dream state…. Amidst repetitive layers of piano & ethereal vocals it creates an abstract world that only you the listen can enter, feel & envisage… The intention for Living light was always to transition into a repetitive layered piano piece which then turned into a somewhat epic long build of a piece and ended up too long to put on Vinyl.
Sydney rock trio Phantastic Ferniture released their self-titled debut album this summer via Polyvinyl Records and it’s so freaking good that you’ll be willing to forgive their crimes against the English language in their band name. Across the album’s nine tracks, the band excels with their danceable garage-pop and indie-rock, and frontwoman Julia Jacklin’s charismatic lead vocals will please fans of retro pop songs, modern rock and even the blues and folk crowds as the remnants of her past folk music endeavors still reverberate in her voice. On “Dark Corner Dance Floor,” Jacklin’s swaggering vocals call to mind a badass Western film, and her voice is hypnotizing enough to convince you to steal a muscle car for her and drive away victoriously into the desert sunset.
Art As Catharsis is proud to announce the release of Strings, a colourful four-track journey from the mind of Sydney based art-folk virtuoso Bonniesongs.
While drawing subtle influence from Jim Black’s improvised jazz record AlasNoAxis, Bonnie Stewart’s efforts on Strings sit closer to experimental folk. All in all, Strings bears similarities to Joanna Newsom’s fluttering melodies, Cat Power’s more stripped back songs or Carla Kihlstedt’s rich compositions.
Beyond these comparisons, Stewart is also neck-deep in the Australian indie scene – performing with the likes of Emma Davis, Alyx Dennison and many more.
Backed by collaborators Freya Schack-Arnott on Cello and Sascha Bota on Viola, Stewart’s composition dances between conventional and uninhibited. Through challenging modern conventions the Australian folk scene is oft beholden to, Strings in its entirety offers refreshing bursts of complexity and wonder. Stewart’s voice calls as clearly and distinctly as birdsong, while every instrument wonderfully accentuates its surroundings. For lovers of atmosphere, shifts in feeling and distinctively airy vocals, this one is for you.
Bonniesongs is Bonnie Stewart. Strings is a special collaboration with friends Freya and Sascha. Six days after their one-off performance as a trio, they made a recording of their experimental, textural and improvised variations on Bonnie’s songs.
Four kids from the Sydney & Melbourne. Bloods have been peddling their garage-punk-pop tunes since 2011, playing alongsidebands like Dum Dum Girls, Redd Kross, DZ Deathrays &more, A happy, upbeat, sunny album that reminds me of The Go-Go’s, The Courtneys and Beverly.
“Rambunctious and spunky… their rugged energy reminiscent of likeminded acts Diet Cig and Hinds.” – Consequence of Sound
“it’s hard not to be pretty instantly smitten by lead vocalist MC’s razor-sharp sass, buzzing guitars and a good dose of reverb” The Music
Feelings sees Bloods songs evolve from garage-punk fun to fully realised pop-punk anthems. The song-writing on Feelings is proof of a band that has grown together and learned to embraced their collective love of pop hooks and wall-of-sound distortion. Pushing themselves further than ever before, Feelings was written over a tumultuous eighteen month period and while lead singer MC was processing the end of a ten year relationship, which inevitably crept into so many of the songs that make up the record.
For nearing a decade, Sydney 5 piece Richard In Your Mind have created a kaleidoscope of Psych-Pop, made manifest in their recent 4th album – the critically acclaimed, meticulously crafted, joyous and bizarre ‘Ponderosa’. From sitars to synthezizers, ‘Ponderosa’ sees RIYM traverse a sonic landscape as comfortable in the world of modern hip hop and electronica as it is neo-psychedelia. Drawing on a vast catalogue (6 releases in total) and utilizing a range of instruments (from acoustic guitars and sitars to samples and synthesizers) to reproduce the full spectrum of their recorded work married with creative re-imaginings of it, RIYM’s live show features both lush arrangements of pure pop moments and bombast psych outs, punctuated by a super fun and often shambolic stage show featuring elaborate decorations and props. RIYM’s live credits include International supports for Ariel Pink, Cibo Matto, Os Mutantes and Warpaint plus beloved locals You Am I and Cloud Control .
S.O.R.E. is our first true encounter with Leroy Francis, a multi-instrumentalist and known insomniac originally from Sydney, Australia. Considering those facts, the story goes that Francis has spent countless sleepless nights, resulting in a rather large library of self-made tape recordings at home from his bedroom. This new EP includes 6 tracks from those bleary-eyed, wee-morning-hour sessions, and you certainly get that sense while listening.
S.O.R.E. (or Songs On Repeat Every Day) is a dazzling mixture of brooding pop and shredded guitar crunches, all blended together into a swirling, psych-tinged landscape. There’s a cool serving of fizzy electronics stretched through a couple of tracks, lending their sounds perfectly to titles “Intoxicated Dreams” and “Comatose.”“Intoxicated Dreams” is built up with dazed guitar leads and steady electronic percussion. You’ll find Francis using his peculiar voice as a tool in certain moments, adding a sense of depth to songs that would otherwise not be present, citing the interlude in track 3 “For What’s To Come.” During some moments I’m reminded of King Tuff, because of his tone, but because of the way he delivers his voice.
“Carry Me” is constructed with sharp, buzz-saw guitars, with Francis’ gritty vocals soaring through the buzzy atmosphere. “Comatose” has its throbbing basses and icy synth beams. Francis is at his best in the brutally honest “Sleeping Ain’t Easy,” singing a lullaby of sorts with his impeccably breathy and unique tone. His voice falls right into place as the instrumentation flows in like a refreshing wave in an endless ocean. It’s a dreamy affair, with a floating atmosphere that’s streamed with warbled guitars and a buoyant bassline that flows against the grain.
“Bought It” is another extremely promising track from the debut album release of Middle Kids long player, Lost Friends. We have already heard earlier tracks “Mistake” and “On My Knees,” and now the Sydney indie rockers have given us a pleasing dose of chugging twilight guitar-pop. You can check it out below,

The Sons Of The East sound is a melting pot of diverse indie sounds and sundry folk melodies; a multifarious and motley mix of banjo, organ, piano, guitar, stirring harmonies and occasional didgeridoo. The result is an alternative folk sound that draws on truly eclectic influences from far and wide, but somehow winds up feeling like home. SOTE have amassed over 1 million views across their first 5 track EP , their first single, ‘Hold On’. The new EP ‘Already Gone’ features new single ‘Into The Sun’ and proves to be an exciting taste of what’s to come.
