Olden Yolk is a New York-based group whose penchant for dystopian folk, abstract poeticism, and motorik rhythms have enveloped them in a sound uniquely of-the-moment yet simultaneously time-tested. The project is led by songwriters, vocalists, and multi-instrumentalists Shane Butler and Caity Shaffer, whose interlaced vocals are found guiding each composition on their enlivening self-titled debut. The project was initially conceived in 2012 by Butler as an outlet for one-off songs and visual art while touring and releasing albums with the band Quilt (Mexican Summer). Following the release of a split-record with Weyes Blood in 2014, Olden Yolk became a collaborative entity.

On the album, Butler and Shaffer are joined by drummer Dan Drohan (Tei Shi, Uni Ika Ai) and guitarist Jesse DeFrancesco who round out the studio sessions and live-band. Drohan’s deep passion for jazz, hip-hop, and experimental percussion come to fore while Defrancesco’s minimal yet powerful guitar ambiences are heard swelling in the peripheries of each song. The album was recorded at Gary’s Electric in NYC by Jarvis Taveniere (Woods) with co-production, electronics, and mixing by Jon Nellen (Ginla, Terrible Records). Other guests, such as multi-instrumentalist John Andrews (Woods, Quilt, The Yawns) and violinist Jake Falby (Mutual Benefit, Julie Byrne), add to the mercurial nature of the record, creating a landscape tinged with beatific songwriting and transgressive underpinnings.

The New York-based group led by songwriters, vocalists, and multi-instrumentalists Shane Butler (of Quilt) and Caity Shaffer, are set to release their self-titled debut album on 23rd February via Trouble In Mind.

We previously shared tracks Takes One To Know One and Vital Sign, and now we have latest single, Cut To The Quick, which the band describe as being, “about reclaiming oneself when the pressures of the outside world seem to close in around you. The video was largely shot in NYC and Austin, TX; two places that have been homes to us at one time or another. It plays with abstraction, memory, and the simple acts we go through on a daily basis to construct some semblance of identity.”

We’re excited to announce that our friends in psych-folk outfit Quilt are the next artist featured in Sounds Delicious series. They’ve reimagined the lost folk masterpiece Spirit of the Golden Juice in its entirety.

Spirit of the Golden Juice was written in 1969 by F.J. McMahon after returning from service in the U.S. Air Force and serves, in part, as a chronicle and commentary of his time serving in Vietnam, Thailand and the Pacific Islands. The “golden juice” in the title was a reference to I.W. Harper bourbon which McMahon described as “the fuel of the times.”

It wasn’t widely released at the time with most copies being handed out by McMahon as he hitchhiked from California to Texas. Indeed, it would be decades before it was rediscovered and hailed by critics as a masterpiece filled with timeless protest songs balanced against freewheeling melodies. The themes and ideas McMahon shared prove as powerful and relevant today as they were when the album was originally written nearly 50 years ago.

Quilt says of the album, “Once in a while you find an album that you can listen to anytime, anywhere and get swept away in the current regardless of your surroundings. Spirit of the Golden Juice is one of those albums, and one that we have all enjoyed together as a band in the van on tour.

Through pure chance, we became friends with FJ McMahon after he contacted us online three years ago, and we have mutual admiration for each other’s music. We decided last year to cover Spirit of the Golden Juice. Our own Keven Lareau engineered and produced it, and it was recorded over the course of several months between New Hampshire and New York.

Earlier this summer we were lucky enough to accompany FJ in Los Angeles as his backing band, playing the entirety of Spirit of the Golden Juice  live for the first time ever! Throughout his years of traveling, John Andrews has documented his life with his home recordings. His first record, Bit By The Fang, found him living in the amish country of Lancaster, PA. His latest record, Bad Posture finds him waving farewell to Pennsylvania & greeting the wooded hills of Barrington, NH. Sitting on top of one of these hills, coined Mt. Misery, is the colonial era farmhouse John now calls his home. This is where Bad Posture was born.

Andrews’ band, The Yawns, has been crystallized with staples from the New England freak scene; Rachel Neveu & Lukas Goudreault (MMOSS/Soft Eyes) & Joey Schneider. All of who have been playing up in the free country for many years themselves and all of who call the same farmhouse home.
Over the past few years John has played as a session player on records by Woods, Widowspeak, EZTV & Kevin Morby as well as composing & recording with his band Quilt.

The third album from indie/psych/folk quartet Quilt might come from old demos, but it bucks these common trends by showing that disparity can serve as a creative asset.Quilt expertly constructs solid psychadelic pop,  They get the psychedelic revival correct, using sustained cord changes, modest effects and balance themselves between psych folk and dream-pop as if they’ve got one foot rooted in the past and one in the present.When Anna Fox Rochinski and Butler throw in a key shift on opener “Passerby” that evokes a sitar-like, resonator guitar tone, it’s as if they hit the whammy bar on the song itself during playback. It’s a trick they manage several times throughout this new set, where the entire band, which also includes drummer John Andrews and new bassist Keven Lareau, will suddenly go slack before the arrangement as a whole automatically snaps back like a guitar returning to its default string tension. At these times, usually the band will be cruising along at a pleasant pace before swerving toward a jagged, seemingly out-of-place chord or element, and the overall effect is like a friend suddenly tousling your hair.

Slightly atmospheric, with a presentation that’s flawless, as if they’ve handed out mood enhancers that sparkle the edges & fill this album with songs that are well crafted, intimate & own the space in which they exist, creating a package that’s downright flammable

QUILT –  PLAZA

‘​Plaza’ is the third album by Quilt; a name implying a meeting place, a crossroads, a coming together. In the space of ten songs, ‘Plaza’ clarifies Quilt’s musical stance of a congregation, mixing folk, pop-psych, and wanderlust into a common ground where each form takes on the characteristics of one another to create something wholly satisfying, styles and sentiments hand in hand, the purest and sharpest distillation of Quilt’s group aesthetic to date.
On ‘Plaza’, Quilt has pivoted their sound on a new foothold. The guitars shimmer, squawk, warble, swell, and tense up. The organs and synths flow in the background as mood-enhancers. The drums dig in a little deeper. We hear flutes and harps, a string quartet, grand pianos and Casios, feedback and distorted violas. Among all these sounds the group’s shared and solo vocals showcase some of the strongest lyrics and hooks the band has made to date. Plaza showcases a tighter, more concise version of Quilt, particularly as the members have learned to encourage each other’s strengths and allow each other to confidently exist as distinct voices cooperating within a very intimate creative space; their songcraft has tightened up, their singing now crystal clear, vis a vis personal experiences of loss, frustration and isolation.

MOTHERS  –  WHEN YOU WALK A LONG DISTANCE YOU ARE TIRED

Limited Copies come with a Bonus CD ‘Demos and Early Cassette Recordings’ which contains four previously unreleased musings written and recorded solo by lead singer Kristine Leschper before Mothers as a band existed. Beautifully delicate and captivating, it is an intimate record of a songwriter navigating the future foundations of what Mothers were to become. ‘When You Walk A Long Distance You Are Tired’ is the debut album From Atlanta’s Mothers who were the toast of CMJ 2015. Produced by Drew Vandenberg – who has worked on albums by Of Montreal, Deerhunter and Porcelain Raft – at Chase Park Transduction in Athens, Georgia in December 2014, ‘When You Walk A Long Distance You Are Tired’ features collaborations with Josh McKay of Deerhunter on vibraphone as well as McKendrick Bearden of Grand Vapids, who played bass and provided string arrangements throughout. Comprised of eight songs – the majority of which were written while Leschper was finishing art school in early 2014 – Mothers’ debut LP is an introduction to the foundations of the young band, a snapshot of a particular period of their genesis that maps both where they began and where they are heading.

BLOSSOMS –  AT MOST A KISS
2015 proved to be something of a seminal year for Stockport five-piece Blossoms. Hotly tipped for this year, the band have been announced as number four on the BBC Sound of 2016 list as well as being included in MTV Brand New for 2016. Blossoms release their brand new EP ‘At Most A Kiss’. James Skelly and Rich Turvey produced the EP at Parr St. Studios in Liverpool. The emphatic, fast paced title track sees Blossoms channel their unique pop-rock sound with shimmering synths, crashing drums, a catchy bass line and Tom Ogden’s now unmistakable vocals. ‘At Most A Kiss’ is released on 10″ Single. It’ll come on standard vinyl in a striking purple and black sleeve.

PINKSHINYULTRABLAST –  GRANDFEATHERED

Pinkshinyultrablast are a five-piece band from Saint-Petersburg in Russia. They’ve been compared to Lush among others. But this is no mere throwback tribute. Second album ‘Grandfeathered’ is a more experimental listen compared with the debut album ‘Everything Else Matters’, it’s the sound of a band unafraid to try new things and embrace those fine lines between visceral noise and restrained subtlety. The band saying of the new sound. The new album has been recorded and mixed much faster than the previous one. The songs have more density to them and are generally more complex. Recent single ‘Kiddy Pool Dreams’ features on the album. Described as “A flashback to the glory days of ’90s alt-rock, which builds into thundering instrumental interludes. In between are trickling synths and echoing vocals backed by a rhythmic danceable guitar.” If that single offers a glimpse of what to expect from the rest of the record, it’s only the smallest of hints – this is an album that consistently demonstrates diversity and eclectic ambition. Influences on this record certainly suggest a new direction for the band, Lyubov claiming “Hardcore, metal and afrobeat” were all instrumental in its formation.

DMA’S –  HILLS END

Australian Britrock enthusiasts DMA’s release their debut album. Called ‘Hills End’, the band recorded the album in guitarist Johnny Took’s bedroom in Sydney, with noted producer Mark ‘Spike’ Stent (Oasis, Madonna) coming on board to mix it. The twelve track album showcases the band’s unique talent in writing both anthemic and heartfelt tunes which manage to sound like immediate classic guitar-pop songs. The album is looking to be one of the most exciting releases of 2016 and can only further the buzz the band have already created. The album includes such exciting hits as ‘Lay Down’ and ‘Too Soon’ sitting next to tender ballads such as the Radio 1 A list ‘Delete’, ‘Step Up The Morphine’ and ‘So We Know’. For fans of Oasis, The La’s and Stone Roses.

sonic weavers Quilt before their gig at the Rural Indie Camp Festival  held on the hills behind Genova, Northern Italy. I had first seen Quilt a couple of years back at the Liverpool Psych Fest then again a few days later in a small club in Coventry, when I caught them opening a gig for Mexican Summer label-mates The Fresh and Onlys . While the headliners played a more ballsy rock and roll that I wasn’t quite in the mood for that night, I got lost in the awesome opening band’s intertwining dreamy melodies and especially the vocals of Anna Fox Rochinski  , knitting a warm musical blanket for collective souls to be tucked under. That night, there was a song in particular that struck a chord that kept resonating in my head. It was some sort of long, cosmic space jam with a beautiful riff keeping it grounded. I bought the record right after the show and soon enough found it in a more structured form as Cowboys In The Void, the second song on the album.

 

Widowspeak is back at it with their third studio LP, “All Yours”. The first eponymous single is refreshing to hear given we haven’t heard the soothing vocals of Molly Hamilton since 2013’s The Swamp EP. As with everything Widowspeak has done, there’s nothing lesser to expect than yet another beautifully interweaving dream-pop/slowcore album. based on the description listed below, we’re going to get even new layers to the already honed skills of this duo. The release date for All Yours is September 4th. Widowspeak . This is the band’s third album, titled  All Yours, is one that could only come from Molly Hamilton and Robert Earl Thomas: a honed and elegant interweaving of dream-pop and slowcore rock and roll, easygoing melodies and dusty, snaking guitars. It’s also possibily their best release to date: ten beautiful songs that are refreshingly straightforward yet built from the same well-chosen and deftly-used tools the band has always worked with. It is an ambitious without feeling labored-over, anchored in the strengths of Widowspeak’s consistent influences. guitar passages, moody and american-country-tinged instrumentation, watery tremolo, velvety stacked vocals and  brilliantly economical guitar playing. the duo, have remained constant since 2012.

After releasing the second LP, Almanac, and then The Swamps EP (both in 2013), Molly and Rob left Brooklyn for the greener pastures of the Catskills/Hudson Valley region. They found a house they could play music in. They got a dog.And they took their damn time making All Yours. For one, the conceptual process of writing Almanac and The Swamps had been creatively draining. They focused on other things: Molly went back to school; Rob took a job at a Catskills hotel. They wrote leisurely, from shared voice memos and late night jams in the living room. As a result of writing down what came naturally, without any overarching vision, the lyrics on All Yours are largely unadorned, the songs connected only by the forgivingly vague theme of “moving on.”Appropriately, the band chose to work again with Jarvis Taveniere, who produced their self-titled debut in 2011.  They also enlisted him and drummer Aaron Neveu (both of whom play in Woods) as the studio rhythm section. We finally get to hear Rob sing in the earnestly laid-back “Borrowed World.” Members of psych outfit Quilt contribute harmonies and keys throughout the record, most notably inMy Baby’s Gonna Carry On,” and “Cosmically Aligned.”

Welcome to a historic Folkadelphia Session. Before this point, we have never recorded a repeat session with any artist. Sure, they always say that they will write or call, but bands get wrapped up in being in a band, hitting that dusty road. We’re just a transitory frequency on their dial en route to another city. Truly we’d like to think that we’re the “going steady” type, but thus far we have had only “one session stands.” That all changes today. Enter Boston-based psych-rockers Quilt, officially a trio of Shane Butler, Anna Rochinski, and John Andrews, but who tour as a quartet featuring Keven Lareau on bass. They finally got us to settle down – at least for an encore session. They told us they were going out for cigarettes and would be right back, and they actually came back! Less than a year passed between our sessions, but it’s obvious that the Quilt have grown into formidible and rightful torchbearers of the contemporary psychedelia genre. On their just-released second album, “Held In Splendor”, Quilt focuses on mastering the long playing record format as a singular sonic portrait instead of a collection of singles. The result is an intrepid effort where there is no designated start or stopping point, but a sunlight-bathed, ruby-gleaming swirl of musical materials. Get on the ride and get off the ride whenever you choose. Your friends in Quilt will always welcome you back for a new adventure.

On their recent Folkadelphia Session, the band gave us a taste of their new record, holding us in rapture. They couldn’t hear us through the soundproof glass of the studio, but we were applauding loudly. Bravo Quilt – don’t forget us on your cosmic journey down the river of life.

Quilt “Held in Splendor” released on the label Mexican Summer,
American folk music is often held as sacred, bound by hallowed traditions both acoustic and spiritual. So it seems almost too easy to name your ragtag, 21st-century folk band Quilt, but it’s difficult to describe this Boston-bred trio any other way, their cloth cut from equal parts the Byrds, Mazzy Star, and the Mamas and the Papas, though the stitches threading their follow up record together are far from linear. Alternating psych-pop textures, radiant Eastern rhythms, and acoustic licks, “Held in Splendor” defies what we typically talk about when we talk about “folk” music. 

Maybe when Quilt named the album, they were describing its sound. More mature – and significantly better – that their self-titled debut, “Held in Splendor” is more ornate, more psych, more 1967 than 1966. Though the psych-folk tossback trend of the last few years leaves mixed results , Quilt has more firmly established their sound within the genre.  Following thier 2011 self-titled debut on Mexican Summer, Its full of cascading harmonies and billowing textures, punchy rhythms and snarled guitars, wonderful depth and resplendent peaks. Mary Mountain takes hazy Summer of Love memories on a mid-summer road trip in a gleaming muscle car. Tired & Buttered invites Booker T over for an energy-addled jam in the garage. The Hollow twinkles like Fleetwood Mac and Galaxie 500, with sweet singing backed by the lap steel sighs of young acoustic guitar . Held in Splendor is an album of personal poetry , confessions and aspirations”really, these 13 tracks are their own playground, brimming with the sort of unapologetic energy and wonder that turns simple songs into absolute anthems.
