“Desert Brain” – from Detroit’s Sisters of Your Sunshine Vapor with their willingness and often penchant for dissonance in their songs. Opening track, “Seventh Scene,” certainly allows for a few surprises in the chord progression, which otherwise slinks along under blankets of reverb and delay.

Though they’ve labeled themselves “garage psych,” there is more experimentation throughout the album than one would expect from those tags. Of course, there are driving guitar riffs – as well as a warm lo-fi feel – but there’s also eclectic rhythms, meandering organs, and soaring guitar leads that don’t fit as nicely in those genres – at least not upon hearing the way they’ve done it. Press material claims the band wanted to create “a shifting moodscape [rather] than [a] collection of individual songs.” And so we’re given a wholly fresh bit of garage rock than looks behind the walls and far, far out there.

See here for proof: “What’s Your Cloud Nine, 37?” begins as a slow guitar based instrumental, then somehow builds to a dense cloud of feedback and reverberating noise that gives way to the epic “Mother’s Magic Tongue / A Little Jaunt into the Light.” Here, shard-like guitars wrangle delay into a solid riff that drops like a hammer every time it comes around. Relief comes briefly before the second half: a slightly off-kilter guitar lead that’s eventually lost amidst noise again – and still there’s room for ambient field recordings at the tail of it all: cars honking, plunking pianos etc. Sisters of Your Sunshine Vapor are currently touring Spain and Greece before returning for a show in Indiana and another in Ohio. My guess is they’ll be adding more shows to support. Keep an eye out for them. In the meantime, you can stream the new album at their Bandcamp page or buy below on clear and aqua splattered vinyl, CD-R or download (at your own price).

If you’re into reverb, spaced out garage rock, and not really understanding what a song is about because you can’t quite hear the lyrics but you’re definitely vibing on the groove, then “Kamikaze” by Grand Rapids-based trio Heaters will certainly make your nipples rather erect. I mean, doesn’t that happen to you when you hear a song you really dig? Either way, we’ve had our eye on Heaters for minute and now they’re set to release Holy Water Pool—their debut LP out on 9.25 via Beyond Beyond is Beyond Records

Michigan band Pity Sex have established themselves as a potent force on their native live scene in recent months. Their explosive performances at this year’s SXSW didn’t go unnoticed either, and later this month they’ll be visiting the UK for the first time in support of debut long player “Feast Of Love”. Expect riffs J Mascis and Thurston Moore would be proud of fused with effects-driven melodies and the occasional wall of noise to boot. This is ‘Acid Reflex’ off the album, which I’m sure you’ll agree is a worthy listen.

If it takes any more than fifteen seconds to hear what “mean” means to the Michigan men who make up Heaters, pick up the needle and start again. “Mean Green” is the A-side track of the band’s new seven-inch single from Beyond Beyond is Beyond Records, presenting a surf-centric slab of sonic stomp that doubles as a definition of “mean.”

In the case of Heaters, “mean” is meant in the context that might be used to describe a 1970 GTO piloted by a jittery Warren Oates – not belligerent, but aggressive, blank-eyes staring at the horizon, fueled by dread and ready to accelerate into the nearest dangerous curve. What’s “green” about “Mean Green” then seems to be Heaters ability to glide into this path naturally, snaking absolutely without hesitation through the song’s tight turns in a way that’s insistent and invigorating.

The flipside of the single, “Levitate Thigh,” proves the band to be possessed by the power of rock and roll, initially bringing the tempo to a stuttering slow-roll, before Heaters are once again the willing captives of a Seeds-level web of sounds, guitar snarl, feedback and drums creating the trap in which the band has no chance – and no desire – to escape.
Out April 28th, 2015 on Beyond Beyond is Beyond Records

A trio from Grand Rapids, Michigan, HEATERS is Andrew Tamlyn, Nolan Krebs and Joshua Korf. 2014 saw HEATERS release their first EP, on Dizzybird Records. Their spacey, driving take on West Coast psych rock and ’60s garage makes for a kaleidoscopic, hip-shaking live set. 2015 should be a big year for HEATERS, as Brooklyn-based psych label Beyond Beyond is Beyond Records will be releasing a 7” single as well as the band’s debut album

Small Houses performs “Old Habits” on Audiotree Live, February 16th, 2015.

Small Houses is a Philadelphia, PA based alt-country project featuring the songs and poems of Flint, MI native Jeremy Quentin. Artfully crafted finger-style guitar playing, and softly sung melodies describing the people, love, and homes of Quentin’s life. Jeremy Quentin, the vocalist behind Lansing’s Small Houses, sings with an earnestness that’s hard to deny… Quentin’s music is based on delicate folk melodies and his plucked six-string, with sparse acoustic arrangements that are quietly beautiful.  Small Houses, is an indie folk artist and multi-instrumentalist who charmingly captures his surroundings in verse. Spinning tales full of honesty and gentle, pretty melodies. I find myself having difficulty describing the quality of such a set. Fantastic? Inspiring? Flawless? Launching with a few solo pieces by Jeremy Quentin, his hypnotic style and furious fingerpicking show me what the Michigan music scene is really about. This is the best kind of entertainment,

The GO’s fourth LP “Howl on the Haunted Beat You Ride”, the brash quartet’s signature raucous energy takes a backseat to lo-fi, off-kilter harmonies riding shotgun. “Caroline” is a song exemplifying the most endearing and elementary of pop classics as if the Zombies and the Kinks made up with Dr. Dog following a schoolyard fist fight. With sweeping riffage, dissonant piano plunks, and hidden saxophone bits, The GO gets a little soft rock. But frontman Bobby Harlow, the menacing Detroit rocker who brought us the sneering garage rock staple “Whatcha Doin'” in 1999, appears pretty comfortable with that. He may be “a boy with rosebud eyes,” however it’s his heart that’s colored with Motor City malaise, thus making “Caroline” the band’s finest heartbreaker since 2003’s “Summer’s Gonna Be My Girl.” ,

Borns from the lower peninsula of Michigan now living in Los Angeles with a dreamy blend of folk, Glam and Electro Rock. BØRNS performs “10,000 Emerald Pools” live at Hotel San Jose in Austin, Texas. Recorded March 19th, 2015. Electric Love from glam-pop newcomer Garrett Borns garnered the attention of no less authority than Taylor Swift, who called the single an instant classic.” He seemingly came out of nowhere with last fall’s catchy, delightful Candy EP, but Borns actually came from L.A. — where he lived in a treehouse. “I’m the kind of person who needs a change of scenery once my thoughts start repeating themselves,” says the Michigan-born singer. Though he’s since relocated to a more traditional abode that he calls Mewtopia (named for the random cats that come through the building’s garden), the seclusion of his nature-surrounded California home helped influence his dreamy and sweet debut.

I first heard this album “LONESOME DREAMS” from Lord Huron which was primarily a solo project of Ben Schneider early last year probably via the Songsforaday.com site its am immediate grower couldn’t stop playing the album . its full of mid west imagery beautifully sung from a superb band of musicians. The band have had three EP’s to date.
