Pity Sex’s co-leader, vocalist, and guitarist Britty Drake announced she would be leaving the Michigan alt-emo punk band in August, just a handful of months after the release of their ace sophomore album White Hot Moon. Incredible follow up to Feast of Love. Polishing their already awesome sound is one of the things Pity Sex does really well on this album is play between the differences of its male (Brennan Greaves) and female vocalists both in the sounds they produce and how they shape the story told in the song. On their excellent debut Feast of Love, Drake’s quiet vocals pushed through fuzzed out guitars and emo tropes of heartache and longing. She often felt central to the song’s story. The huge, thick guitar riffs fill your brain and seem like a wall; a wall the band tears down when they open up their sound and let you in closer. The highlight is “Plum” for me; the lyrics so sad but heartbreakingly beautiful when sung by Britty Drake.

On White Hot Moon, her vocals told a bit more of a defiant story, like on the track “Burden You.” The demureness of her voice with gritty riffs is more triumphant but slightly, and smugly, a little on the apathetic side. White Hot Moon still bears the imprints of Feasts of Love’s more feelings centric themes paired with sharp, sometimes booming riffs. What will be of the band after Drake’s departure is unknown. But before she left, Drake left a sweet and bold mark on Pity Sex.

Pity Sex’s much anticipated White Hot Moon delivers that same uniqueness and depth that made Feast of Love so awesome without sacrificing a sense of direction and exploration. I can’t wait to listen to it on vinyl as the sun winds down.

Ann Arbor’s Pity Sex built the world of White Hot Moon, their second album, inch-by-inch. The band is using the foundation of 2013’s celebrated Feast of Love as the framework for something bigger, stronger, and altogether more monumental. Coming off of tours with Ceremony, Eskimeaux, and Colleen Green—in- cluding a run in Australia—the band dove into the studio with Feast of Love producer Will Yip to harness that momentum into an album to showcase Pity Sex’s growth. And if White Hot Moon wears its ambition on its sleeve, that’s by design: the band looked to wide-screen albums by Yo La Tengo and Sonic Youth for inspiration in finding a bigger sound. That shows: Drake and Greaves spin huge webs of sound, anchored in shoegaze but branching off in a dozen directions, from fuzzed-out power-pop (“Bonhomie”) to shimmering balladry (“Dandelion”) and back again, while St. Charles and Pierce lock into step subtly counterintuitive rhythms and floor-shaking low-end. The result of this playful but dedicated approach to their craft: wherever you visit White Hot Moon, you’ll come away refreshed, revitalized, and ready for Pity Sex to guide you along the rest of the trip.

Pity Sex are slated to release their sophomore full-length, white hot moon, on april 29th via the esteemed run for cover records.  the ann arbor quartet has long displayed a propensity for crafting a distinct brand of forlorn shoegaze, and its further refinement has not gone unnoticed.  following the stellar “what might soothe you?” and “burden you,” pity sex have offered up “pin a star,” a fuzzy, particularly pop-centric single that infuses britty drake’s coos of undeniable truths with echoed sentiments from co-vocalist brennan greaves.  take a listen to “pin a star”

Michigan band Pity Sex have established themselves as a potent force on their native live scene in recent months. Their explosive performances at this year’s SXSW didn’t go unnoticed either, and later this month they’ll be visiting the UK for the first time in support of debut long player “Feast Of Love”. Expect riffs J Mascis and Thurston Moore would be proud of fused with effects-driven melodies and the occasional wall of noise to boot. This is ‘Acid Reflex’ off the album, which I’m sure you’ll agree is a worthy listen.
