Garage band Bleached now have a new song and are kicking ass on “Keep On Keepin’ On.” A Bangles-esque chugger about “about sticking with someone through thick and thin, no matter how fucked up they are” (can relate), it comes accompanied by a Lana Kim-directed video of the girls sprinting through a dark Los Angeles street. “You never see who or what we’re running from or being stalked by” says singer Jennifer Clavin

Los Angeles garage trio L.A. Witch follow up last year’s ‘Kill My Baby Tonight’ with this absolute banger of a track: ‘Drive Your Car’.

Released on February 12th via Ruined Vibes/Black Mass Recordings, the girls – Sade Sanchez (vocals/guitar), Irita Pai (bass/vocals), Ellie English (drums) – pull out all the stops, and go full throttle on a welter of chugging riffs and reverbed vocals in the style of a Black Rebel Motorcycle Club meet Joan Jett.

Don’t you dare call these three badass chicks from L.A. “the next Haim.” Muna is on a mission to give a voice to females from all walks of life in the form of some of the catchiest pop tunes.

Founded by Katie Gavin ( lead vocals ) Josette Maskin  ( Lead Guitar ) and Naomi McPherson (rhythm guitar/production), MUNA is a dark pop girl band based in Los Angeles, CA blending the brooding sensuality of R&B, rhythms of funk, and audacity of synthpop with raw, unbridled lyricism. Muna is currently accumulating and slowly releasing a stockpile of sonic gems that lend themselves both to the dancefloor and to emo bedroom solitude. They hope you can put them to good use.

Pre-order ‘Welcome The Worms’ out April 1st, 2016 on Dead Oceans

On April 1st, LA’s Bleached will be releasing their sophomore LP, titled Welcome the Worms, via Bloomington, IN’s Dead Oceans. Created in the chaos of an eviction and broken relationship, the band feel more confident and in control that anytime before, if first reveal “Keep On Keepin’ On” is any indication. The song has a left-coast Ramones aesthetic to it and a appropriate message of perseverance given the personal challenges previously mentioned.

The full-length debut from Girlpool, the Los Angeles based band made up of Cleo Tucker and Harmony Tividad, was raw, incredibly vulnerable, and brave. Working in a style that is antithetical to contemporary indie-pop music—lacking any percussion, the only instruments being electric guitar and bass—Girlpool’s sound resembles that of a conventional singer/songwriter or folk musician, a conscious decision makes the duo’s work remarkably postmodern. With subject matter that feels unapologetically personal and an artistic voice that is intelligently observant, Girlpool’s lyrics on Before The World Was Big evoke a nuanced sensitivity and an enlightened perspective about the total awkwardness that constitutes young adulthood.

The debut EP by Girlpool released at the end of last year is out now: Yup, another Girlpool track. You don’t often hear voices in unison singing the same notes, unless it’s a massive singalong. But I love how the girls in  Girlpool use this to great effect: it’s a song about the loss of love—friendship? Something more?—and the voices weave in and out, usually settling on the same notes and words, creating a united front for the good of companionship.

Girlpool have confirmed they’ll be heading over to Europe in September for a bunch or UK and European dates.

The UK leg of the tour will see the LA based Rockers take in End Of The Road festival in Dorset, followed by a series of headline UK shows in cities such as; Manchester, Glasgow, Leeds and Birmingham, before the duo head off into mainland Europe.

“Fool For Love” opens with a delicate wash of humming bells, a distant organ drone and a few carefully plucked strings. It’s a beautiful, meditative mix that shimmers with the kind of hope and determination that only a new day can hold in its earliest hours, just after waking, before the inevitable letdown.

What unfolds after it is a sepia-toned story song from another time, when honorable men resorted to fisticuffs to win a woman’s heart. “I’m leaving this place behind, and I’m heading out on the road tonight,” sings frontman Ben Schneider. “Before I commence my ride, I’m askin’ Lily to be my bride.”

As Schneider tells his tale, the music kicks along with cocksure resolve, punctuated by ringing guitar riffs and shuffling rhythms. It swells and ebbs like a sighing heart, heavy with the weight of love. But there’s a melancholy undertone to it all, as if he knows, down deep inside, he isn’t really going to get the girl, or if he is, it’ll never live up to his expectations. Sort of like the strange, uncertain looks Dustin Hoffman and Katharine Ross give each other at the end of The Graduate.

Based in Los Angeles, Lord Huron will release their full length second album , Strange Trails, on April 7th. It comes three years after the folk rock group’s 2012 debut Lonesome Dreams.

Lou Reed was touring in support of “Rock and Roll Heart”, when he rolled into L.A.’s Roxy and played a set that was recorded for later radio broadcast. Lou Reed and his road band (which included Michael Fonfara on keys and Marty Fogel on sax) sound like they’re having a fine time, and with free jazz legend Don Cherry sitting in, the band’s frequent jams give this an exploratory feel that sets it apart from some of Reed’s other live sets of the period.

Lou Reed himself is in a loose and playful mood (at least by his standards), occasionally goofing on the lyrics, and reveling the opportunity to make noises with a new guitar synthesizer. The set does include two lesser-known tunes from Rock and Roll Heart, ‘You Wear It So Well’ and ‘I Believe in Love,’ and the extended improvisations will make this worth a listen for serious Lou Reed fans!!, Available now from Amazon on

James McMurtry album Complicated Game landed among most bloggers Best Albums of 2015: “James McMurtry, the son of novelist Larry McMurtry, puts his yarn-spinning genes to good use in dark tales on ‘Complicated Game,’ an acoustic Americana masterwork and his first album since 2008’s politically caustic Just Us Kids. This time, the singer-songwriter leaves protest tunes behind for more personal narratives. He flaunts his guitar chops on rock stomper How’m I Gonna Find You Now, but most of the dozen tracks keep the focus on McMurtry’s rich literary talents.”

The first studio album in six years from the dean of Texas songwriting. McMurtry turns a phrase better than most, and injects an extraordinary pathos into his everyman characters. He didn’t miss a beat during the half-dozen years delay, and this one is well worth the wait.
I’m not sure there is anyone out there today who can write songs about everyday scenarios as perfectly as James McMurtry. On his latest effort, McMurtry strips down his songs to their basics and lets the focus be on the stories within each song. The incredibly heartbreaking song “You Got To Me” will leave you missing something- whether that be home, a past relationship, or just earlier years will be up to you.
