Magana creates haunted Alternative Pop, which is as emotional as it is atmospheric and as beautiful as it is beguiling. Golden Tongue is the debut EP but Jeni Magana has taken the long road to get here. Born in California, Magana was classically trained in her youth before attending Berklee College in Boston and moving once more to New York City where she found herself writing songs, working with a variety of bands (Oh Odessa, Annie & The Beekeepers), creating commercial jingles and even working as a studio and touring musician for artists as unexpected as the Dropkick Murphys. This bizarre musical education shines through on the masterfully eclectic Golden Tongue EP. Magana is a very whole artist but this debut sounds vital and energetic, full of microscopic melodies and shuddering instrumentation.

Sparse and haunting sounds made by electric guitar and voice. Haunted Alternative Pop from Brooklyn’s Jeni Magana. “Golden Tongue” EP out now on Audio Antihero Records.

NYC-based singer/songwriter Jeni Magana is a woman with a colourful musical history. Over the years, she has written advertising jingles, fronted a ‘90s cover band, and recorded with the Dropkick Murphys, among countless other projects. Until recently, however, she had never released any songs of her own, but that all changed when Golden Tongue  Magana’s debut EP

‘Golden Tongue’ is the debut EP from Brooklyn’s Jeni Magana. It’s a brief, bold and bitterly beautiful calling card from the young artist. Four tracks of brittle and erratic guitar pop. These are weary songs, delivered with both anger and acceptance. There’s a hint of the eccentric and a tinge of melodramatic but these songs sound as haunted and traveled as they do vital and honest. “With what is just the briefest of snapshot Magana has invited us into her world and in the process created something which feels expansive and breathlessly travelled.”

Brooklyn songwriter Jeni Magana, who recently released “Golden Tongue”, among the best EP’s Of last year.

With a string of upcoming dates in the US, Magana has wasted no time in putting new music into the world, and has this week shared a new single to coincide with the tour, entitled Pages.

Previously unreleased up to now, live favourite ‘Pages’ is an early experiment in Magana’s ever shifting solo sound. It’s a gorgeous standalone document of her evolving creativity and expression. The song shows a more traditionally Indie Rock side to Magana’s dreamy Alt. Pop output. It’s heartfelt and emotional rock music with ghosts whispering through the walls.

Pages starts with a flurry of muted, driving guitars, that seem to breathe the song into life, before they’re joined by sweeter, swooping electrics and complex, driving percussion. While “Golden Tongue” existed in the realms of glittering alt-pop, Pages is a more primal beast, ragged squalling instrumentation paired with angry, pained lyricism as Jeni’s vocal seems to exist simultaneously as a whisper and a yell. It ends with Jeni noting, “we’re just pages of a story that now no-one will hear”, but the story of Magana is just beginning, and it’s already unputdownable.

One fan of what many would term sad music is Jeni Magana, or just Magana to use her professional name. Magana is set to release her debut EP, Golden Tongue, at the end of the month on Audio Antihero.  Golden Tongue is a remarkable record, across just four tracks it drifts from the pained, tender, and almost resigned balladry of Inches Apart, to the powerful, rhythmic title track Golden Tongue. Jeni’s beautiful and addictive vocal has touch points with Margaret Glaspy, Daughter’s Elena Tonra or Torres, but ultimately is a unique and intriguing prospect entirely her own.

These are early days for the music of Magana, but already she seems to have emerged fully formed and ready to conquer the musical landscape. We wouldn’t bet against her becoming a huge star.
