I always seem to have a huge amount of bands “on my radar and must see” – bands that have caught my attention from a small sample size of music.  One of the acts I’ve been following this year is from Brisbane, Australia known as WAAX with a brand new EP at  Christmas.

This brand spanking new four-song EP titled “Holy Sick”, is a perfect slice of ferocious post-punk. Vocalist Maria DeVita wails and growls over a sonic assault of guitars and crashing drums with a superb bass line.

Brisbane has a very proud history of producing brilliant rock acts, with the garage sound pretty much perfected in the sunshine state’s capital. With WAAX, we have something a bit wilder, with a dangerous edge that draws your attention in a totally captivating way. They’ve turned the standard Brisbane rock sound on its head in 2015 and we’ve loved every minute of it. Debut EP, Holy Sick, is a riotous affair  and my introduction to the four-piece

Marie Devita’s opening scream of, “I’m just a girl,” will leave you with little doubt in your mind that she’s a lot of things, none of which consist of her being ‘just’ anything. She’s a force of nature throughout ‘I For An Eye’ and the EP’s title track ‘Holy Sick’, before showing she and the band are far from a one note act on my favourite EP cut, ‘CC Thugs’. That last one is rock perfection and enough for me to believe that there is a very bright future ahead for Brisbane’s new face of rock.

Harrison Storm is a 23 year old singer/songwriter based in Melbourne. Harrison Storm gave Melbourne Unplugged a great acoustic performance of his original song ‘Broken Feather’.

This was recorded in the grounds at Abbotsford convent, which lent its warm and historical feel to the vibe of the video.

His much anticipated debut EP ‘Sense Of Home’ was noted as “Stunning” when released in April 2015. It was recorded with producer Hayden Calnin and mastered at Studios 301 by Andrew Edgson (Vance Joy, Matt Corby, Angus Stone).
The first single ‘Be Yourself’ has already received over 500,000 plays on Sound Cloud, airtime on Triple J and Triple R along with highly praised live performances on ABC radio Australia. It also gained airplay overseas on US radio KCRW after spending a number of weeks in the Hype Machine top 50 most blogged songs.
Harrison has gained invaluable experience playing at venues across Melbourne such as The Toff In Town, The Evelyn Hotel, Howler, The Workers Club, Gershwin Room and The Shebeen whilst sharing the stage with acts such as Husky, Kagu, Daniel Champagne and Woodlock. For all those people asking about a physical copy of the EP, they’re available through my band camp site: https://harrisonstorm.bandcamp.com/

Harrison Storm is a 22 year old singer/songwriter based in Melbourne.
Harrison is greatly influenced by hischildhood, where he grew up by the beautiful beaches of the Mornington Peninsula, Victoria. Exposed to music from a young age through his mother’s guitar playing and father’s poetry, Harrison began creating his own music inspired by his parents’ record collection.

Four great songs that deeply speak to the heart and soul. A very smooth combination of voice and music.

The Paper Kites sophomore effort Twelvefour was recorded in Seattle with producer Phil Elk (The Shins, Fleet Foxes, Band of Horses). The title is reference to the rather unique concept for the album; all songs were written between the hours of midnight and 4am. The record sounds and feels late night, in a good way. Part 70’s dreamy pop, part alt-country, twelvefour is an album sitting happily in a slightly sleepy comfort zone, and it’s a wonderful place to be.

Propelled by sparse yet driving drums and bass, the male/female vocals are a feature, and work great together. Electric guitar peppers the songs with melodic alt-country licks, reminiscent of some of Ryan Adams best moments with The Cardinals. Released late in the year, this is an album that will no doubt be enjoyed as the background to many a summer gathering. Yet those who take the time to immerse themselves in the record will be justly rewarded, revealing great songs full of subtle intricacies and beauty.

slide Bad Dreems

On their debut album Bad//Dreems have taken the spirit of the Australian underground of decades past and the isolation of living in a small rural town and made it sound very familiar to this city living kid.

Right from its you just know this album is going to be a keeper; packed with tales of love, nostalgia and loneliness making it easy to relate to, but it’s the tongue in cheek, critical looks at Australian culture that make this album stand out. Dogs At Bay is a love letter to everything Australiana. It is also half an hour of shouting and air drumming for sure.

For their debut album, Bad//Dreems, the country’s best (and only?) purveyors of “outsider rock” worked with legendary producer Mark Opitz (The Angels, AC/DC, Cold Chisel), updating the “Oz Rock” template of working-class romanticism for a whole new generation. For the most part it’s thematically kept within arms-length, with vocalist Ben Marwe wearing his heart on the non-existent sleeves of his blue Chesty Bonds. An approach of front-foot assertiveness adapted equally for heartache (“used to love her, now it’s fucked”) and hatred (“you’ll never take me, ya dog”), with his guttural vocals slicing through the slickness of the stadium-ready production. Quintessentially Australian without any shades of cultural cringe.

Creating a recent buzz with the release of singles ‘Hard Hold’ and ‘Salt Shaker’ the four piece fronted by vocalist/ guitarist/ songwriter Cosima Jaala (Manglewurzel) are wasting no time pumping out their debut full length also titled “Hard Hold”experimental bedroom punk or humble and enthusiastic whinge

The outcome of a single week writing and recording, this record was produced and engineered by the band’s good friend Paul Bender (Hiatus Kaiyote) it was tracked live with limited overdubbing keeping as close as possible to the live energy of the songs as they were first written and performed. Manic, genre pushing and incredibly endearing – this is a local record that’ll shape the Aussie music landscape, Jaala is Cosima (vox/guitar), Maria Moles (Drums), Nic Lam (guitar) Loretta Wilde (bass)

Growing from the band’s 2013 EP Like A Thief, Art Of Sleeping’s debut full length relies more on a guitar driven, percussive rock sound, combined with tracks that are delicately layered in synth and keys. All of that combined with Caleb Hodges’ gorgeous vocals and we have got a winner.

It is a raw, honest look at the downside of being in love, weaving through tales of desperation and heartache. One of the album’s most poignant moments is the simple, stripped back Burning Bright, breaking up all the noise. Album highlight has to be ‘Crazy’ with its groovy melodies and battling guitars and percussion and silky smooth vocals. Its so great to see how far Art Of Sleeping have come over the last few years.

Chapter Music’s website refers to the band Dick Diver as “Melbourne deep pop thinkers”, and it seems like such a perfect description. Their grasp on guitar-based indie-pop music is clearly deep; they often recall New Zealand’s Dunedin scene and the Go-Betweens and other melodic-guitar-pop bands of the past. That’s a starting place, but they keep going directions you don’t expect, from the sax solos to faux ‘60s rave-ups to crashing anthemic choruses to soft-rock moods to quiet grooves that unfold and then disappear. The “thinkers” word is incredibly important too – when I think of their approach to lyrics as “smart”, what I mean is that they alternate among being inscrutable, wry, emotional, biting, strange, straightforward and poetic. One song, “Waste the Alphabet”, was written with the help of an actual poet. So you know, that means they’re smart.

“Reverie on Norfolk Street” taken from the Luluc album “Passerby” available from Sub Pop Luluc Splitting time between their native Australia and their adopted home in Brooklyn, singer-songwriter Zoë Randell and guitarist Steve Hassett create luxuriously serene music that floats above the normal rhythms of contemporary life. Wistful melodies pull listeners deep into the dreamscape of their “finely wrought modern folk tunes”.

Having opened for Lucinda Williams, José Gonzalez, and Fleet Foxes, they collaborated with The National’s Aaron Dessner on the 2014 album Passerby, which won places on numerous “Best of 2014” lists.

Live At Cleveland’s presented by RØDE Microphones: A fortnightly live music session that showcases country, folk and bluegrass acts from in and around the Sydney region.

Filmed and recorded by Sam Brumby, live inside the charming Cafe/Salon, ‘Cleveland’s’, located at 311 Cleveland St. Redfern. These sessions couple the pleasing aesthetics of the stores surroundings with the captivating performances of the musicians. This season of the AU Sessions is coming to an end this month with a final show.

In this session Caitlin Harnett performs “The Raven” with the RØDE Classic II on vocals, NT5 on guitar & Procaster on the guitar amp.

Caitlin Harnett hails from Sydney, Australia but her songs evoke Laurel Canyon of the early 1970s. They share the personal and poetic nature of Joni Mitchell and Jackson Browne’s early songs, combined with the fragility of Judee Sill, youthful in their outlook but with age-old concerns at their core. Combined with her guitar, banjo and harmonica, her songs have the lilt of folk, a touch of pop and the honesty of Americana.Caitlin is one of the youngest signings to Mushroom Music Publishing, Australias largest independent music publisher. She has been recognised both internationally and locally for her songwriting.
September 2013 saw Caitlin head to Ottawa, Canada to record her debut full length record ‘The River Runs North’ with producer Dave Draves (Kathleen Edwards, Howe Gelb), Jim Bryson and a group of Ottawa based musicians.
