Australian psychedelic-rock squad King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard are getting ready to murder the universe with their new LP “Murder Of The Universe” the second of an absurd quantity of five albums that they plan on releasing this year. It’s a sprawling, nigh-incomprehensible 21-track concept album about the apocalypse or something, and they’re sharing it in three 13-minute chunks that they’re referring to as “chapters.” The first was “Han Tyumi and The Murder Of The Universe” and now they’ve shared a new chapter called “The Lord Of Lightning Vs Balrog,” which includes “The Lord Of Lightning,” the track that they performed on the Late Night With Conan O’Brien Show, last month. The whole thing comes with a massive video directed — sorry, created  by frequent collaborator Jason Galea and Ben Jones, which finds the band performing in the middle of the woods while some freaky druidic ritual takes place. Experience that below.

Leah Senior is the kind of artist best enjoyed alone, indoors and cozy on a cold winter’s day, allowing her exquisite folk sounds to melt your heart.

The depth she achieves with just her voice and a guitar on Where Have You Been? is astonishing, while the subtle strings on Pretty Faces and Jenny are stirring. You Were Not Fit For The Day is wonderfully evocative as Senior spins an observational story, her double-tracked vocals inducing chills. Black Limousine notably shifts the pace of the album as Senior’s backing band joins the fray, to potent effect. With a spellbinding voice and a delicateness to her music that is nothing short of awe-inspiring, Senior is truly something special.

The second single taken from Leah Senior’s new album “Pretty Faces” out May 26th on Flightless Records.

It’s an engrossing release, 10 tracks delicate, dark folk music that grabs you from the first gentle guitar pluck, and refuses to let go across a swirling world that ebbs and flows, all pinned down down to some kind of ethereal reality by Senior’s incredible voice. It’s released on King Gizzard’s own Flightless label, and was recorded and produced with King Gizz’s Joey Walker. It also features musicians Jesse Williams (keyboard/electric guitar), Andi Senior (vocals), Joe Walker (therovox), Michael Cavanagh (drums), Alex Bleakly (bass) and Vince Ward (cello).

With the confidence Middle Kids display in their songwriting and performances, it’s hard to believe just how new of a band they are.
The emerging indie pop band from Sydney, Australia has its roots in 2014 when classically trained pianist Hannah Joy met multi-instrumentalist Tim Fitz, who worked as producer for Joy’s solo work. The project turned collaborative, and shortly after they recruited drummer Harry Day. Before the band had even played a show, they wrote and recorded their incredible debut single “Edge of Town”, which gained quick exposure after Elton John shared the track on his radio show and Apple Music playlist.

They quickly released their debut self-titled EP, which was recorded partially in their garage. They arrived in Toronto for a tour stop with Cold War Kids at the Danforth Music Hall, and played a short set for us in the Stiegl Hidden Studio which included “Edge of Town” and two other stand-out tracks from their EP. Check out their performance below and see for yourself why Middle Kids have blown up so quickly (and to check out Hannah’s unique upside-down guitar playing.)

Middle Kids perform “Edge of Town”, “Fire In Your Eyes”, and “Old River” live for Indie88 in the Stiegl Hidden Studio.

The Owls have also been missing in action for a time, but that’s less of a break for commercial purposes than an acceptance that the musical experience and the pressures thereof can result in depression and anxiety damaging the people in it. Jesus Let Me Fly (Independent) is them refreshed, but with a laconic and maybe even weary feeling that comes from a Catholic upbringing in Newcastle. Although, that’s our very own Hunter Valley location, even allowing there are literal and figurative echoes that nod toward Britpop, or even America’s Pacific Northwest circa 1994, in their musical musings.

Their new single “Jesus Let Me Fly” is a musical amalgamation of 60’s garage rock and 90’s alternative rock, with influences from The Dandy Warhols and The Vines, to The Kinks pulsing throughout. While lyrically it deals with issues of mental health, growing up within a conservative town only to discover a significant lack of belonging within the mold and reality of the environment. These rock inspirations, together with pop sensibilities weaved throughout, by Lachlan Mitchell, places The Owls on the front foot for the remainder of 2017

There’s also something very Australian in the slightly awkward intimacy Emma Russack offers, even as she flips the aforementioned Ms Barnett’s ‘…nobody cares if you don’t go to the party’ with the blunt contradiction that, in fact, Everybody Cares (Spunk), and you can be the subject of gossip and speculation, while you’re actually home reading Sartre (yes, of course you are…). The music’s staccato hesitancy fits with the nervy doubts of life that might be hiding behind the bravado, as you decide whether to read another chapter, or just hide under the doona. A stunning effort from the prolific Melbourne songwriter who manages to continue her legacy as one of the country’s most underrated indie rock talents”

If you’ve been riding the crest of the Aussie psychedelic rock wave for a while, you may already be familiar with down-under wonders, The Babe Rainbow. Their debut EP from Flightless Records  in Sept. 2015 (produced by Stu Mackenzie from King Gizzard ) made instant ripples on a label that just keeps delivering the goods. The band returns this summer with their debut full-length LP, and the timing just feels right. Can you say it could be the summer soundtrack?

The Babe Rainbow represents a slightly folkier, stripped-down and sweeter side of the Psych rock scene, and captures everything you loved about the late-60’s movement in the first place. If King Gizzard’s Paper Mâché Dream Balloon was your bag, you simply cannot go wrong with clicking the ‘Buy’ button. The Babe Rainbow’s debut EP went fairly fast and fetches quite a bit on the aftermarket, so don’t wait around too long!

The Babe Rainbow’s self titled debut album due out on Flightless Records on June 2nd 2017

Husky

Following the announcement of their upcoming album Punchbuzz indie duo Husky have announced plans for a national tour this June and July through Australia.

With the release of their new album Punchbuzz little over a month away, Husky today bring news of a national tour to fans and share the visionary video for their current single ’Ghost’. Following on from popular first single ‘Late Night Store’, ‘Ghost’ has enjoyed a warm welcome into the world. It was premiered via triple j’s Veronica and Lewis along with Clash Music in the UK, and has since received lots of airplay . The rhythmic, driving song sets the scene for Husky’s third album .

Shaped by the duo’s recent experiences, Punchbuzz sees the band swapping their signature folk sound for streamlined indie rock that lopes ahead with widescreen atmosphere, dark lyrics, and newly muscled melodies. Sharp, lean, and driving, the album more than lives up to the dynamic imperative of its title.

Husky have also given us a taster of Punchbuzz new album with their new single and video “Ghost”. Check out the video for “Ghost” below:

“Ghost” is taken from the new album Punchbuzz, Out Jun 2nd.

After almost 12 months of partial hibernation Battlehounds are finally releasing their debut EP Damn Demons.

Recorded again with John McNichol at Twin Earth studios in Adelaide, the EP was mixed by good friend Ali Wells at Grinch Door Records (Bad//Dreems, West Thebarton Brothel Party) with the final touches added by Joseph Carra (King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard, The Peep Tempel, Bloc Party).
The five track EP is lead by single Night Crawl, a three and a bit minute, hook riddled, driving rock and roll juggernaut that lyrically recalls bad decisions and questionable company.

Uncompromising from start to finish and surrounded in grimy guitars, gristle and beer soaked vocals – Damn Demons is what will be hopefully the first in a long list of extended releases from Battlehounds, and one that looks to cement the band as one of the great up and coming Australian guitar acts.
