Out this week is the deluxe expanded album SKYLARKING reissued in a 5.1 surround sound from Steven Wilson,this track “Dear God” from the brilliant english band XTC who released the album in 1986 the track DEAR GOD was not originally on the final running list but was added after it became hugely popular after a radio station in the USA flipped the A-Side of the song “Grass” to play the anti-theist anthem leaving off the track “Mermaid Smile”. the sessions produced by Todd Rundgren who famously did not get along with Andy Partridge, XTC were melodic angular pop with jagged riffs this reissue is one of the finest album to be released at that time its lush broad and deeply expansive and parts of the psychedelia sound for the next Dukes of stratosphere appear

I had lost faith in the HOLD STEADY their first three albums were wonderful including the minor classic ” Boys and Girls in America” with lyrically driven storytelling in their songs the American rock band from Brooklyn NYC, fronted by Craig Finn has songs a plenty but they are back to their best with sixth recording the new album “Teeth Dreams” just released this is the track to be issued as a single . They have also released a covers EP for a charitable trust.

this tour in 1976 was around the same time that the second album RADIO ETHIOPIA had been released and the follow-up to the critically acclaimed “HORSES” it features a small interview with Patti, and a near full set from the band in Sweden. One of the best document and records of the Patti Smith band there are two velvet underground covers.the Bands classic finale Van Morrison’s “Gloria” The band starts off with Were Gonna Have a Real Good Time Together, Redondo Beach, Free Money, the Velvets Pale Blue Eyes running into a version of Louie Louie, Ask The Angels, The Rolling Stones Time is On My Side, Ain’t It Strange, Patti then straps on guitar for Radio Ethiopia, Rock N’ Roll Nigger, Gloria, and Land. Radio Ethiopia had not been well received the Douglas production relying on a more heavier guitar sound smothering Smiths Vocals,influenced by the MC5 but many of the songs became regularly played in concert. Patti who was highly influential fusing rock and poetry. in January 1977 Smith accidentally danced and fell offstage into the concrete orchestra pit some 15 feet down breaking several vertebrae
