I think it’s fair to say that Bruce Springsteen tends to get covered more by men than by women. But that doesn’t mean that there haven’t been some great covers by female artists over the years. Indeed, some of the biggest hit Springsteen covers just think of the Pointer Sisters’ “Fire” and Natalie Cole’s “Pink Cadillac” .

Joan Jett, who sang the title song in the 1987 movie “Light of Day,” having been selected for induction to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame this year, and with this year’s Light Of Day festival , it seemed like a good time to take a look at some memorable Springsteen covers by women.

TORI AMOS: “I’m on Fire”
In the mid-90s, Amos performed this song on the VH1 series, “Crossroads,”

NICOLE ATKINS: “Dancing in the Dark”
Springsteen’s fellow Monmouth County native recorded a moody, atmospheric “Dancing in the Dark” for last year’s Dead Mans Town album, which paid to the songs of Springsteen’s Born in the USA.

NATALIE COLE: “Pink Cadillac”
The Born in the USA B-Side became a Top 10 hit for Cole in 1988.

MELISSA ETHERIDGE: “Born to Run”
Etheridge, who has often spoken about Springsteen’s influence on her, turned in a memorable performance of Springsteen’s anthem, with the Boss himself watching, when he was presented with a Kennedy Center Honor in 2009

EVERYTHING BUT THE GIRL: “Tougher Than the Rest”
From the British duo’s often-revelatory 1992 album, “Acoustic.”

PATTY GRIFFIN: “Stolen Car”
From her 2002 album, “1000 Kisses.”

THE POINTER SISTERS: “Fire”
The group had one of the biggest hits of its career with this sultry song — which Springsteen has said he wrote with hopes that Elvis Presley would record it — in 1978.

DONNA SUMMER: “Protection”
This tense, gritty tune sounds like it could have been a Springsteen classic if he had sung it himself, but he never has (or, if he has, he’s never released it). Summer released it on her self-titled 1982 album, which was produced by Quincy Jones.

TRISHA YEARWOOD: “Sad Eyes”
Country artists have long had an affinity for Springsteen’s heartfelt ballads. Yearwood included this stellar version of “Sad Eyes” — from Springsteen’s 1998 rarities boxed set, Tracks — on her 2000 album, Real Live Woman.

Our dear friend at The Blog That Celebrates Itself released “Spiritualized in Other Medications” today, featuring 26 bands from around the world paying homage to the work of J. Spaceman & Spiritualized.  This album clocks in at about 2 hours and 45 minutes of amazing music.  If you are not yet acquainted with Spiritualized, you are in for something very special.

When I heard Spiritualized for the first time, it was as if I were listening to a prayer, I became static, I just admired that beauty in sound forms, and from that moment I became a fan, a huge fan, that still hear all those magic songs, and still hear them as if they were prayers.
Ah yes, that song, or rather, that prayer I heard there in 1991 was Feel So Sad.  Thank you J. Spaceman.

This record is dedicated especially to all the bands that made their versions as new medicines for the treatment of the heart and soul. In this Tribute we have almost 3 hours of music, and as said my friend Johnny (Astral Lite) “was what I expected from a Spiritualized tribute”..

“Night Comes Down” continues RPM’s ongoing pedigree in creating bespoke Sixties compilations of rare British music aimed at discerning collectors.

This 3-CD box set follows previous collections Looking Back (2011) and Keep Lookin’ (2014), which ran the gamut of musical styles which emanated from the UK, diverse and yet united in their dance floor appeal, from the discotheques of the day to nouveau Mod clubs in the 21st century.

“Night Comes Down” charts the development of Beat music in the 60s, through 87 tracks across 3CDs! .Many tracks make their official debut on CD, including rarities, all housed in a beautiful clamshell box.

Including rarities by The Gnomes Of Zurich, Kevin ‘King’ Lear, Dominic Grant, The Shadrocks, The Reaction, Al Saxon, The Hammers, etc. In addition, ‘Cypress’ by The Truth is a previously unissued variant of Donovan’s ‘Hey Gyp’.

Familiar names (The Spencer Davis Group, Laurel Aitken, The Moody Blues, Arthur Brown) are joined by cult favourites (John’s Children, Mickey Finn, The Bo Street Runners) and relative unknowns (Five’s Company, The Second Thoughts).

Across the three CDs, NIGHT COMES DOWN charts the development of Beat music in its various guises, from the gutsy yet jazzy R&B which opens Disc 1 through to horn-laden Brit Soul (Norma Lee, The Brothers Grimm), fuzz-laden Freakbeat (Favourite Sons, The Tomcats, The In Crowd), Femme Pop (Twiggy, Twinkle), and groovy Loungecore (courtesy of Mark Wirtz and Les Reed’s British Lion Orchestra).

Disc 3 reflects the influence of Psychedelia, as Swinging London became multi-coloured, with assorted treats from The Alan Bown, The Mike Stuart Span and The Spectrum, with some unlikely Mod-ish discoveries by “hairy” bands such as The Deviants and Fat Mattress.

Anyone who tried to purchase every 45 captured on NIGHT COMES DOWN would have to set aside several thousand pounds!

Singles (Deluxe Version) [Original Motion Picture Soundtrack]

Pretty much everything about the breakthrough of grunge music in the early ’90s can be boiled down to one movie: Cameron Crowe’s 1992 classic “Singles”. I mean, Pearl Jam was actually in the movie and Matt Dillion’s wardrobe consisted mainly of Jeff Amnet’s actual clothing. But nothing sums up the cultural significance better than the film’s soundtrack, which featured the likes of Chris Cornell, Alice In Chains , Mother Love Bone, Mudhoney , and yes, Pearl Jam. This year marks the 25th anniversary of the OST, and it looks as if Sony Music will be celebrating with an expanded reissue.

A Double and a Triple LP box set of the Singles Soundtrack (Deluxe Edition) have appeared on Amazon’s UK site. Both editions feature the original 13 tracks plus 18 new ones including demos, instrumentals, and “Touch Me” I’m Dick” by Dillion’s fictional band in the film, Citizen Dick, which featured Pearl Jam’s Eddie Vedder, Stone Gossard, and Jeff Ament. (It should be noted that the way the tracklist is listed out makes it seem as if the vinyl box set will actually feature the original OST on double-vinyl and include the 18 bonus tracks on CD.)

Image of BORING ECSTASY 12" COMPILATION

Boring Ecstasy is a compilation put together in celebration of four years of Orchid Tapes releases. In the time that we’ve been in operation we’ve gotten to know some of the most vibrant, talented and kind people that we’ve ever had the fortune of being friends with. Aside from becoming label that houses music that we can truly feel proud of having helped to release, Orchid Tapes has turned into a tight-knit group of people that we’re happy to call our family, despite the geography that restricts us from being able to see each other as often as we’d like to.

The album is a collection of home-recorded songs that represents a group of musicians whose creativity is unbridled by any kind of financial or technological barriers. A passionate love for music and the desire to create things true to individual vision remains the overarching aesthetic that we try to harbor with Orchid Tapes, and we hope those ideas come across through the music on this record.

Thank you so much for your support and for listening.

It’s alarming to note the number of rock genres that have roots in a specific compilation album. The 1960’s folk revival sprang to life as a result of Harry Smith’s Anthology of American Folk Music; punk rock got a jump start by Lenny Kaye and Jac Holzman’s Nuggetsindie pop became a new shorthand after the release of the NME’s C86.

Following in this legacy is Orchid Tapes co-founder Warren Hildebrand, who has been championing bedroom pop artists through his New York-based label since 2010. “Radiating Light” is Orchid Tapes’ second compilation—it gets its name from a lyric fromYohuna’s “Badges,” which was featured on the first comp. Each of its 13 songs is composed by a different artist, but each one also hews close to the label’s defined aesthetic: electronic-leaning, lo-fi pop.

But despite this general overlap, there’s a clear split between the glitchy, experimental electronica of Katie Dey, Ricky Eat Acid, the aqueous synth ballads proffered by Hildebrand’s Foxes in Fiction and the more straightforward pop of R.L. Kelly, Infinity Crush, and Owen Pallett.

http://

The one constant is a general propensity for introspective, backward-looking lyrics. The album’s three standouts—Soccer Mommy’s “Memories,” R.L. Kelly’s “Mad,” and Yohuna’s “Geese Outside”—form a constellation of isolation; “Mad” ends with R.L. Kelly singing, “I can’t remember the person I used to be,” atop a solo guitar while “Geese Outside” begins with Yohuna singing, “I don’t remember a time / when I was happy, gracious, or kind.” The songs on Radiating Light not only define bedroom pop, but provide a compact introduction for future listeners.
