Ty Segall can seemingly transform his music from Glam Rock God to Grunge Rocker at will, but the prolific rocker can do just about anything well, and that includes intimate stripped down acoustic sets . In the Summer, Segall went on a short tour of solo acoustic shows in various New York City venues accompanied by Wand’s Cory Hanson, and it was a very different concert experience from the usual Segall stomp-fest, but it sounded just as good. It’s no secret that Segall is a huge Neil Young fan . He even has a tattoo of Young’s name on his right arm on the Wednesday night at Baby’s All Right, he trotted out a cover of Neil Young’s “For The Turnstiles.” At the Mercury Lounge on the Friday night, he played an entirely new song live, hilariously introducing it as a song “about a tree growing inside of an airplane” before admitting after playing it that “I lied, it’s a love song.” It’s not clear if it was written as an acoustic song or just adapted with the rest of his stuff for the show, but it sounds great either way. Also at the Mercury Lounge he played the Cars’ “My Best Friend’s Girl.”

The prolific Segall released an EP and two live records—one with the Ty Segall Band and another that was a split with King Tuff . Earlier this year, In the Red revealed plans to release albums by Segall’s bands Fuzz and The Traditional Fools .

Ty Segall did an impromptu rendition of Neil Young’s song “Down By the River” during the encore of his Teragram Ballroom show in Los Angeles over the weekend. He was joined by Mikal Cronin for the cover; watch it below. The concert was a benefit fundraiser for The Smell,  the vital D.I.Y. venue in L.A. that received a demolition notice earlier this year. This isn’t the first time Ty Segall has done one of Neil Young’s songs live; he played “For The Turnstiles” during an acoustic set.

Ty Segall has announced a new self-titled album through Drag City Records. The self titles album “Ty Segall” marks the prolific artist’s ninth studio record (his debut record from 2008 was also called Ty Segall) and it’s out January 27th.  Segall has shared the album’s lead single; listen to “Orange Color Queen” below. He’s planned a slew of tour dates for 2017 behind the new album Segall’s last album, Emotional Mugger, arrived in 2016.

Single from Ty Segall’s forthcoming self-titled album. Out January 27th

Ty Segall gets ambitious with a new short film, Emotional Mugger, which was directed by Matt Yoka. Though it uses songs from the album of the same name (often in stripped/remixed form), calling it a music video would be wrong. The 15-minute short film is a paranoid sci-fi horror flick where Los Angeles is as much the star as Ty. (This is very much the weird L.A. of Repo Man.) Witness to all manner of very strange occurrences, Ty Segall is more an emotionless spectator than a participant. Might he be an actualzombie? Strange in all the right ways, watch Emotional Mugger

Ty Segall’s “Emotional Mugger” is available from Drag City on LP, Cassette, CD, and Digital formats.

Before Ty Segall can issue Emotional Mugger, his latest (in a string of many) collections of grimy garage rock, he has to look back before he moves forward. Way back. The California-based songwriter’s affinity for the sparkly songwriting of T. Rex’s Marc Bolan has been no secret, but next week he’s underscoring that with the release of Ty-Rex, a compilation of covers on Goner Records. Most of these renditions have already seen release on a pair of 7-inches that he released in 2011 and 2013, but Goner’s collecting them in one package for the first time, alongside a previously unreleased cover of “20th Century Boy.”

Sidled up against one another its clear just what a glam-rock glitter bomb Segall’s built up over the years under this banner. It’s due out in full on November 27, Record Store Day Black Friday, so it should be a perfect burst of color for one of the bleaker days of the year.

Second mp3 single from the album  “Weirdo Shrine”, the new Ty Segall-produced sophomore album by Seattle surf-rock group La Luz, out August 7th on Hardly Art Records. Surf-rock band La Luz’s sophomore album Weirdo Shrine will be released tomorrow, and even with a brief listen it’s clear that it’s an album with passion, skill, and intense emotion. Their track “Don’t Wanna Be Anywhere” seems to best showcase lead guitarist and vocalist Shana Cleveland’s effortless skills, especially considering the mellow, yet refined riffs embedded in flawless lo-fi sound. It’s definitely a track that begs to be understood, so multiple plays are definitely not out of order.

First single from Weirdo Shrine, the new Ty Segall-produced sophomore album by Seattle surf-rock group La Luz, out August 7th on Hardly Art records. What makes Weirdo Shrine interesting is that all this existential dread is wrapped up in classic-sounding surf rock, topped with enough “ooohhhs”, “aaahhhs”, and vocal harmonies to fill your girl group quota for an entire year. Lead singer and guitarist Shana Cleveland tosses out bright, airy guitar riffs, tinged with just the right amount of reverb, as easy as breathing. But the surfer girl guise is a front.

Nowhere is this more apparent than the ballad, “I’ll Be True”. Cleveland croons, “No one else treats me like you do/ And I’ll be true to you/ Just as long as you want me to,” while keyboardist Alice Sandahl tries to wrestle the good name of organ solos from the hands of Ray Manzarek. But the lingering effect of the song is not the declaration of loyalty, it’s the minor chord progression that blends with the ladies’ descending voices. It begs the question: If the love in the song is so pure and innocent then why does it come tinged with such eeriness?

La Luz recorded It’s Alive in the back of their friend’s trailer. For Weirdo Shrine, producer Ty Segall constructed a makeshift studio out of an old surfboard factory. At first, this tactic can come across almost like a cheap gimmick, a soundbite for press releases. But once you realize Segall also chose to keep a persistent hissing overlay on the entire record (it’s hard to ignore once you hear it)—the occasional, lingering odd note or glitch will also tend to appear during the transitions between tracks—his methods become less a cute anecdote, and more a way to keep the group firmly grounded in their DIY roots. The ladies might have perfect pitch, but this is not an album for cleaning up mistakes.

It’s frustrating that the record doesn’t fully convey the energy of La Luz’s live shows, where the band members will crowd surf and request the audience make space for a line dance à la “Soul Train”. But if you choose to focus on La Luz’s doo-wop harmonizing, then you’re only looking at the frilly, pink bow that tops the whole package. The undercurrent of darkness in La Luz’s music is what makes their work so fierce and intelligent. You could blink and miss their sneaky, underhanded way of slipping unease into their cheerful-sounding songs. Which is why you should give them more of your attention.

Towards the end of last year, this Gravesend four piece released two tracks for Brighton label Dead Fun that didn’t get anywhere near the attention they deserved. “A Song For Baron Willoughby” and “Wandwaver” didn’t stray to far from the skewed, frenetic machine-gun, garage punk that is Thee MVPs staple, its just that its the best its ever sounded. With the quality of the two tracks and the hints at the bands first full length, 2015 looks like it could be Thee MVPs year.

Its rare to find a band that can shape interesting, dynamic punk songs and still manage to bring the party. Its this level of craft behind the fun that sets them apart from those who simply want to hitch a ride on the Ty Segall nostalgia bandwagon.
