If you’ve never before been surfing or had a wheat grass smoothie or participated in a cult like ritual in the spooky hills above Los Angeles, L.A Witch’s “Kill My Baby Tonight” will have you signing up for all three before you can say Joan Didion. The goth-pop trio’s debut album is inspired by 1960s-era Hollywood — a time when caftans were all the rage and serial killers were on the loose. Listen to “Kill My Baby Tonight” as you wander out into the sunset for a cleansing bonfire.

L.A. Witch back in March last year and the threesome have signed to Suicide Squeeze Records for the release of their eponymous debut album.

Reverb-drenched guitar jangle and”Haunted surf rock, road trip blues and 60’s-sounding psychedelia” with sultry vocals conjure the analogue sound of a collector’s prized 45 from some short-lived footnote cult band. The melodies forgo the bubblegum pop for a druggy haze that straddles the line between seedy glory and ominous balladry.

It’s been less than a year since the Coathangers, the raucous Atlanta garage-punk veterans, released the album “Nosebleed Weekend” , their last album. And they’ve already announced plans to follow it up with a new EP called Parasite, one that calls back to various different eras in the band’s run. The first song they’ve shared from it is called “Captain’s Dead,” and it’s got a whole lot of energy and a great big chorus hook.

The Atlanta garage punk ensemble and music faves The Coathangers have announced a new EP and tour, the first track from it “Captain’s Dead”, with its sultry verses, triumphant chorus, and a bombastic freak-out of noisy guitar. Best of all the band are playing some live shows in the UK, including the City of Leicester at the Cookie it seems miracles can still happen.

The band hailing from Los Angeles  are a special kind of hazy fuzzed out evening. Like the moments before a storm here they feel eery and exciting. New track ‘Brian’ is proof of that. Recently signed to Suicide Squeeze Records the trio seem to have something special up their sleeve.

‘Brian’ is a slow burner. It reverbs across the cavernous heated airspace and drags the star shine with it. Feeling at times moody and untouchable it softens at the edges and lets you in to a smoky and darkened descent with a smile on its face.

This new slice of their reverb-soaked punk sounds with a new single ‘Brian’! The band will be headlining a full UK and European tour in February and March.

It’s easy to forget that just a few decades ago, the only viable means for penetrating the golden glamour of Los Angeles was via the dusty trail of Route 66. And just as the arteries of the interstate latched onto the thumping heart of California, so too came the amplified sounds of a new restless generation. There was acid on the streets and revolution in the air, but there were also Hell’s Angels in the alleys and Manson’s family on the desert periphery. It was an age of innocence, beauty, and opportunity, with an underbelly of lawlessness and depravity. And it had a soundtrack.

It’s impossible to listen to L.A. Witch and not hear echoes of that time. The sound of dusty neon and the first dim-lit bars of Sunset ring out with every reverb-drenched note. The juxtaposition of Hollywood allure and Skid Row desperation throbs in every three-chord riff. And the perilous wager of temptation lies in every sultry vocal melody. Yes, L.A. is the land of sunshine, but it also harbors a certain kind of dangerous magic. And no one seems to understand that more clearly than the three women of L.A. Witch. Whether they’re conjuring the downtrodden cowpunk of The Gun Club, the seedy metropolitan balladry of Velvet Underground, or the beefed-up blues of Black Sabbath, L.A. Witch remind us of that exhilarating revelation that a city can elevate you just as quickly as it can grind you into the dirt.

Childbirth is the Seattle-based guitar band that includes members from a few key groups in the city’s scrappy rock scene: Chastity Belt, Pony Time, Tacocat . The trio’s new full-length is out this fall via Suicide Squeeze Records ,the band’s newest punk freak-out. It’s a half-whispered, half-shrieked call-to-action, encouraging ladies to embrace all the indulgences that society tries to make them feel guilty about: splitting a dessert, showing up a little late for work, wearing skirts that barely fit. It’s a rousing, ragged example of the way most Childbirth songs tend to be laugh-out-loud funny while also getting at some deeper, more empowering truths. The album, called Women’s Rights, is due October 2nd.

Childbirth is a “supergroup” in the sense its members are all in other hit bands (Julia Shapiro of Chastity Belt, Bree McKenna of Tacocat, Stacy Peck of Pony Time).

Like the majority of effective political art, Women’s Rights shows rather than telling. The songs describe what is fucked up in the world so evocatively that it needs no commentary, and always with a biting sense of humor.

Artist: Shana Cleveland & The Sandcastles from the album  Oh Man, Cover The Ground
and the leading track  Holy Rollers on Label: Suicide Squeeze Records
True, much of the album was recorded a few years ago, but Cleveland has been quite busy in her main gig as singer/guitarist for Seattle garage mystics, La Luz. So on a break, she polished up this solo debut, a gorgeous cycle of folky, Cat em-Power’d, dusk time wistfulness. Shana Cleveland is a  musician, artist, and writer living in Seattle and hitting the road as often as I can. My current involvement in bands are La Luz and Shana Cleveland and the Sandcastles. My very short stories have appeared in places like: Black Clock, the Columbia Poetry Review, Court Green, and Vice. I have made artwork for the Believer and my paintings have been featured in Yeti Magazine, “Obscure Giants of Acoustic Guitar” (a deck of trading cards I painted for the Tompkins Square Record label), and on some T-shirts. I am happy to make portraits, illustrations, or posters on commission—get in touch!

“We know you’re supposed to enjoy your senior year and I appreciate it and everything, but to be honest, we just can’t wait to graduate,” says Clementine Creevy with a laugh. Not that you can blame her. The 17-year-old frontwoman of LA-based band Cherry Glazerr is busy getting things together for their 10-day tour later this week, and she really has other things to think about than homework. Besides the tour, Creevy and her bandmates, drummer Hannah Uribe (also a high school senior) and bassist Sean Redman (who’s the oldest of the trio, at 23) are gearing up to release their new seven-inch on Suicide Squeeze Records. The pair of tracks includes “Had Ten Dollaz,” which Saint Laurent designer Hedi Slimane featured in the recent Fall/ Winter show, and this B-side, “Nurse Ratched.”
