Vancouver native Tobias Jesso Jr moved to LA some years ago to try to make it as a songwriter. It didn’t go well. Failure, a breakup, a traffic accident and his mother’s cancer diagnosis sent him home, his tail between his legs. Paradoxically, success found him there, when Jesso Jr’s piano-and-voice compositions began to take shape, and he began collaborating with Chet “JR” White, formerly of the band Girls. Fast-forward several months, and Jesso Jr’s debut album finds people such as producer-du-jour Ariel Rechtshaid (Vampire Weekend, Haim, Sky Ferreira) and the Black Keys’ Patrick Carney on board. Jesso Jr gravitates more towards the literate American 1960s of Harry Nilsson. Jesso Jr’s experiences in the entertainment industry into succinct takes on a classic sound. KE

JAMES BAY – ” Hold Back The River “

James Bay,It’s been an amazing week for James Bay being nominated for the BRITs Critics’ Choice award, finishing up the tour and releasing this new video track In music, the phrase “one to watch” gets tossed around a lot. But these days, with so many new ways to consume songs and so many new songs to consume, what make an artist actually worth listening to?. We’re not concerned with labels or throwing out descriptive niceties just to convince you that these artists are “the next big thing.” It’s in their music and in their own words, and all you need to do is lend a curious ear. At first glance, James Bay seems unapproachable. Don’t get me wrong, he definitely has a kind face—but it’s hidden under his signature wide-brimmed Panama hat and shoulder length locks. Also playing into the intimidation is the fact that the buzz surrounding this up-and-comer has been positively deafening. While there’s no definitive debut album release date in sight, a whole lot has already been written about this tunesmith. They’ve said his voice is rare and raspy, all encompassing and authentic. (And it is.) They’ve also said that he’s got this Ray LaMontagne meets Damien Rice sound. (And he does.)
SHAKEY GRAVES – ” Big Time Nashville Star “

Our Sense of Place: Austin guest today, Shakey Graves, has been described as one of the best solo acts in town. With his finger-picked guitar and suitcase drum he takes over the stage. He put out his full length debut “Roll the Bones” in 2011 and an EP “Donor Blues” a year later. He has also spent time chasing acting parts, including one in Friday Night Lights. He even moved to LA to pursue roles, but ended up spending the time working on his music. It turns out performing is in his blood — his parents were in the theater and he practically grew up onstage.

Although this is a fairly old clip, its astonishingly good, this guy is an amazing guitar player and storyteller.Christopher Paul Stelling is a troubadour in the truest sense. His songs find their roots in the storytelling methods of southern folk music. His meticulous finger plucking guitar playing couples well with his commanding vocal style as he weaves the two around stellar songwriting that encompasses subjects near and dear to early American folk artists, he tours across Europe and the UK fairly often please try to catch him,
ANAIS MITCHELL – ” NPR Tiny Desk Concert “

Anais Mitchell has a new record called “xoa” in limited release this October, I made it mainly for YOU beautiful people in response to requests from y’all over the years it’s got a few new & previously unrecorded songs, a few from Hadestown that were sung by other artists on the record, and a few from my back catalogue!
Anais and her family are hitting the road for most of the fall and playing shows all over the states, UK & Ireland, and a few on the continent. Her voice is soft and sweet, her guitar work deft and evocative, but Anaïs Mitchell is a songwriting storyteller first and foremost. Robbed of a gift for melody and poetry, Mitchell would probably (and may yet) write some tremendous novels. Her ambitious recent discography bears out that notion: The 2010 album version of her star-packed folk opera Hadestown recasts Greek legend in America, while this year’s Young Man in America turns her thoughts to the pitfalls of modern life, inspired in part by the works of Mitchell’s writer father.
Thankfully, as this Tiny Desk Concert in the NPR Music offices demonstrates, Mitchell possesses a warm and ingratiating style to go with her evocative, impeccably crafted lyrics. Singing and playing alongside guitarist and longtime collaborator Michael Chorney, she performs three of Young Man in America’s most bracingly beautiful songs with clear-eyed directness that requires no adornment. Set List “Shepherd”,”Young Man In America”,”Tailor”

CHRISTOPHER OWENS – ” I’ll Be There ” Jackson 5 Cover
Posted: November 22, 2014 in MUSICTags: Christopher Owens, Cover Songs, Jackson 5, singer songwriter
While promoting his latest album, A New Testament, Christopher Owens recorded an in-studio session for the University of Minnesota college station Radio K. During the session, the former Girls frontman pulled out a sentimental and stunning cover of Jackson 5‘s “I’ll Be There.”
With affectionate finger picking being the only accompaniment, it feels like we are watching a man sing the cherished song to a lover rather than witnessing a studio session. If anything, this cover reminds us that Owens’ is at his best in an intimate and acoustic setting.
