After spending her formative years with Bathetic Records, where she released two albums and a couple of singles – amongst them her two years old breakthrough record Half Way Home – Angel Olsen recently signed with Jagjaguwar. Not exactly a shocker, since the label has a habit of picking up talented, unconventional, folky acts at just the right moment. Sharon Van Etten’s decisive transformation between the Ba Da Bing released Epic and her Jagjaguwar debut Tramp, is one of several fine examples, and perhaps the most obvious comparison when discussing Olsen. Even more so than Van Etten, the leap Olsen has taken between Half Way Home and Burn Your Fire For No Witness is striking, but not surprising. Laura Marling is possibily the best female singer songwriter ever from the UK
Here is a live version of an, as yet, unreleased song and a lovely Townes Van Zandt cover by Laura Marling.
Both were recorded for US Radio station NPR’s eTown programme. Born To Love has featured regularly in her live sets over the past year or so and Colorado Girl is one of our favourite TVZ songs.

What a shame Elvis Costello and Graham Parker released stellar albums at the same time Joe Jackson released Look Sharp!, his debut, in 1979. Parker unleashed Squeezing Out Sparks, arguably his finest, and Costello published Armed Forces, also arguably his finest. But Jackson, the quintessential angry young man and every bit their equal, should never be forgotten as one of the classics, and his albums from 1979-1983 are documents that prove he should have been more revered/popular than he was/is.
