On April 16th, record stores across the UK will unite to celebrate the beauty of vinyl for Record Store Day. The RSD website describes the event as “the one day of the year when over 200 independent record shops all across the UK come together to celebrate their unique culture.” In reality, that often means a scrum for exclusive releases but the all-round good vibes in record stores across the land makes it a can’t miss day in our calendar.

In the UK, this year’s event will take place on April 16th.
As always, there’s a whole host of fancy coloured vinyl, limited edition pressings and several reissues you can get your mitts on. We’ve already picked a few highlights here but you can see the full UK release list on their website.
Arrive early. If you’re planning to go to one of the big shops, we strongly advise you to get in the queues in plenty of time. Most shops will open around 9am on the Saturday, but there will be people queuing hours before that.

Most importantly, though, be patient. We know you’re going to be sweating it out thinking your record will have gone but racing around and pushing people out the way will kill the vibe for everyone. Soak it up and enjoy the day.

Don’t just take our word for it – Banquet Records (@BanquetRecords) in Kingston suggested that shoppers should “bring some cash, bring a smile, bring an open mind, bring a smart phone” to the event and the crew at Jumbo Records (@JumboRecords) in Leeds say to “try to come with a list of alternatives in case your first choice of record is unavailable or sold out” and most importantly – “enjoy yourself!” Wise words.

Things you should definitely not do
Be a dick and sell them on eBay after. Seriously – everyone hates that person. We know they’re exclusive, but it devalues the whole day if you make a bigger profit on a record than the shop you brought it from.
Also, holding extra copies of a record while you wait for your mate to come into the shop is a big no.

Several artists will be releasing exclusive CDs and cassettes that you can nab on the day. The Flaming Lips will be releasing a reworking of their ‘Clouds Taste Metallic’ exclusively on CD and Metallica will also be exclusively releasing a live show from 2003 on the format. For those über-hipsters who are trying to bolster their cassette collection, there will be the chance to pick up Marilyn Manson’s career-best album ‘Antichrist Superstar’ on the old-school format.

This special edition RSD piece was originally released in the UK in 1965. Never before released in the U.S. it is the Animals fourth British EP, cut at Kingsway Studios in London at 45 RPM snf pressed on 10″ vinyl for audio fidelity. Limited to 3000.

At a Songs:Ohia show in the early ’00s, Jason Molina said to the artist William Schaff that he would love to see himself depicted as one of Schaff’s signature, skull-headed creatures. The two struck up a pen-pal friendship and Schaff sent Jason his picture. In return, he asked for a recording of the Townes Van Zandt covers Jason had performed that night. The pair of Van Zandt covers included here, recorded at Molina’s home on the north side of Chicago, symbolize not only the creative turn Molina’s songwriting had taken (seen in his forthcoming Magnolia Electric Co. release) from sparse and jagged indie rock to rootsy folk rock, but also a sonic bond between two friends who loved each other’s work very deeply. After learning of Molina’s death in 2013, Schaff spent days pouring over his lengthy correspondence with his friend, with Molina’s oeuvre on repeat. He created the painting that graces the cover of this release in the process: Apropos of everything, a skull-headed creature in flight. This special 7″ release is limited to 3500 copies worldwide.

Ezra records cover songs from artists like Beck, Arcarde Fire and the Replacements and presses them on 12″ silver vinyl for his Record Store Day release. Limited to 500 copies. “A good song takes you far,” sang Jackson Browne on tour in the 70s. It’s true, and very strange– how these little three-minute compositions crafted on a whim in a bedroom end up bringing us out on planes and highways, into bars and ballrooms and radio stations, pouring out our hearts and lungs for those who themselves were pulled out of their rooms and into the world by the power of song. Browne understood this: he himself was covering Danny O’Keefe’s perfect ode to the bizarre bittersweet life of a traveling musician, and when I listen to it crammed in a van full of instruments speeding across rainy Germany, it hits hard.

I have always played other people’s songs, alone and with friends, at home and on the road. I know our audiences’ main interest is in our original songs, and for that I’m honored. But I can’t seem to stop playing covers. Every time we are preparing to go on tour I can’t help assembling the Boy-Friends and demanding that we learn a new cover song to play live. I listen to so much great music and just ache to be able to inhabit it more fully. I want to be Beck or Melanie or Jackie Wilson. So this record is me playing dress-up, with the help of my incredible band. (Don’t miss that point– the Boy-Friends are an incredible band that can do anything, without whom my voice would not be in your earholes.)

Thanks for indulging us in these cover versions, pieced together from studio recordings, recordings made on tour in backstage rooms and hotels, and a live show in Austria. I’d like to point out that we’ve included a song from every decade since rock’n’roll has been a viable marketing category, the 1950s through the 2010s. You are encouraged to look up the original versions if you’ve never heard them. They blew my mind.”

On Tuesday, March 8th, Record Store Day held their press conference to celebrate record stores and the launch of the 2016 Official Release list at Electric Lady Studios. Among the panelists were Lenny Kaye of The Patti Smith Group, Brian Sella of The Front Bottoms, Record Store Day co-founder Michael Kurtz, Sam Calagione, founder of Dogfish Head Brewery, Lee Foster of Electric Lady Studios and Wendy Schneider, producer/director of The Smart Studios Story.

Just as Record Store Day celebrates independent record stores of all sizes and specialties, the list is varied and covers nearly every genre of music. Once again this year, nearly 60% of the titles are from independent artists or released through independent labels and distributors.

Several artists, including Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers, Shawn Colvin & Steve Earle, Jason Molina, Brandi Carlile, Florence + The Machine, Regina Spektor, John Grant, New Barbarians, and over a hundred more will release exclusive tracks for Record Store Day.

Metallica is the official Ambassador of Record Store Day 2016 and is helping RSD support and honor the victims of last year’s tragedy in Paris with the release of Liberté, Egalité, Fraternité, Metallica! – Live at Le Bataclan. Paris, France – June 11th, 2003, a CD featuring a live recording from the club, with the band, distributor Think Indie, Record Store Day and independent record stores donating proceeds to Fondation de France’s Give For France charity. In addition, Twenty One Pilots, Anthrax, and The Doors will be releasing Disquaire Day 7” singles in a show of solidarity and to celebrate the relationship between Record Store Day and Disquaire Day, between French record stores and US record stores, and between American and French lovers of music, art and culture. In addition, Record Store Day will see special releases from French artists Air, Erik Satie and Metal Urbain, as well as a recording of Johnny Thunders & The Heartbreakers’ 1977 final gig, also at Le Bataclan in Paris.

Record Store Co-founder Carrie Colliton said, “Record Store Day is not about a single genre of music or a single format, but Record Store Day has drawn a whole new audience of music fans into the world of independent record stores. This year’s line-up should continue to do that and we’ll hopefully continue to introduce the next generation of record buyers to both vinyl and the unique world of the record store.”

Johnny Marr is set to mark this year’s Record Store Day with a numbered limited edition 7” release of his interpretation of Depeche Mode’s 1993 classic ‘I Feel You’. Taken from the album ‘Sometimes I Sit And Think, And Sometimes I Just Sit’, Australian singer songwriter Courtney Barnett has shared the video for the seven-minute ‘Kim’s Caravan’.

Described by Barnett as “an apocalyptic tale of our world painted black with oil and soot, painted red with blood and greed”, in the video for the slow-burning, atmospheric track (around which she sings of the destruction of The Great Barrier Reef and pollution), directed by Bec Kingma and shot on Philip Island, we see shots of Barnett near desolate beach-side tourist spots and playgrounds.

Kingma explains her interpretation of the lyrics: “In conceptualizing a film clip for the track I am keen to explore the adult attempt to return to that place of childish innocence. If you have ever returned to a childhood holiday haunt in the offseason, it’s likely you’ve discovered the sad realisation that the place barely resembles your idyllic memories. As grown ups we all yearn for a time and place where our biggest concerns were the sand in our bathers and the mosquito’s eating us alive.”

‘Kim’s Caravan’ will be released on Record Store Day, April 18, as a 12″. The B-side is her cover of John Cale’s ‘Close Watch’.

Heartbreakers Max's Kansas City RSD LP

A Record Store Day release on multi-coloured vinyl of the classic live album, with the rarely heard Volume 2 added for the first time on vinyl.

Johnny Thunders and Jerry Nolan formed the Heartbreakers out of the ashes of the New York Dolls in 1975.  Gaining infamy in London touring with the Sex Pistols on the Anarchy tour of ’76, they went on to produce just one album, the classic L.A.M.F. in 1977.

The Heartbreakers split up When Track Records folded early in 1978.  But in the fall of ’78, Johnny Thunders,Billy Rath and Walter Lure found themselves in New York and decided to do a couple of gigs for ‘old times sake’ and some ‘chump change’. Jerry had moved on to play with The Idols and Sid Vicious, so they got together with drummer Ty Styx for some farewell gigs at Max’s Kansas City.  The resulting album was issued in 1979 on Max’s Kansas City Records in the US and Beggars Banquet in the UK.

It sold well, so Max’s Tommy Dean and Peter Crowley decided to record a Volume 2. A long weekend of shows was booked, this time with original drummer Jerry Nolan, but ‘chemical imbalances’ ruined all but half of the last show.  Beggars turned down the tapes, and Volume 2 remained unreleased, appearing only briefly on CD in the mid-90’s.

Now for the first time, both volumes are brought together on double-vinyl, in a Record Store Day release of limited, spattered red, yellow & black double vinyl.  Disc 1 is the original 1978 live album and Disc 2 is Volume 2 recorded 1979 but unreleased until 1995 and never before on vinyl.  The album comes in a gatefold sleeve with the original artwork, together with an insert with notes by Johnny Thunders’ biographer Nina Antonia.

VOLUME 1:  Side One  Intro, Milk Me, Chinese Rocks, Get Off The Phone, London, Take A Chance, One Track Mind.  Side Two  All By Myself, Let Go, I Love You, Can’t Keep My Eyes On You, I Wanna Be Loved, Do You Love Me.
VOLUME 2:  Side Three  All By Myself, Pirate Love, Too Much Junkie Business.   Side Four  Don’t Mess With Cupid, So Alone.

Warpaint and Daughter makes a pretty good match: the moody, punchy attitude of the former meets up with the moody, airy temperament of the latter, and you end up with a pretty good remix. The two bands have announced that they will rework each other’s tracks on a new split for Record Store Day 2015. The first of these two remixes is Warpaint’s take on Daughter’s If You Leave track “Winter,” and the L.A. band adds some smoky instrumentation and a heightened sense of urgency to the sleepy original.

Los Angeles indie quartet Warpaint and UK folk outfit Daughter have joined forces for a new 12-inch single in which they’ll be remixing one another’s tracks. Due out on Record Store Day 2015, its previewed today with Warpaint’s contribution, a reimagining of Daughter’s 2013 If You Leave highlight, “Winter”.
