’60s loving psych popsters The See See have been going from strength to strength in recent years, with their albums quickly selling out and the mighty Sundazed introducing their sunny retro-pop sound to audiences stateside with a very cool anthology. Hot on the heels of that collection comes a brand new album proper, ‘Once, Forever and Again’, which features recent singles ‘Featherman’ and ‘The Rain & the Snow’ alongside 11 fresh tracks. Soundwise you probably pretty much know what to expect here – a dreamy psych-pop sound with heavy debts to the Byrds and Syd Barrett, the British Invasion and the Paisley Underground, seasoned with a splash of Big Star-esque power-pop.
With some nice wibbly vintage organ tones in places, warm, foggy guitars and a fistful of timeless-sounding pop hooks, The See See continue refining their hazy and celebratory ’60s pop aesthetic with real verve here. ‘Let Me Be The One (For You To Love)’ stands out with its dreamy verses and punchy chorus, and the Ray Manzarek-esque organ line in the opener is very charming, although when they drop the pace on tracks like ‘Sun Arrows’ and piano ballad ‘Ynys Las’ I’m less convinced. The highs far outweigh the lows though and on balance it’s another excellent offering from this reliable bunch.
