TWEENS – ” Forever “
Posted: March 10, 2015 in MUSICTags: Cincinnati, Garage Pop, Post Punk, Tweens
Bridget Battle’s last band might have been a high school choir, but the 21-year-old singer for Cincinnati’s Tweens is no goody two shoes. Look no further for proof than their forthcoming Self-Titled LP, the punk-tinged debut from the trash-pop trio—Battle on vocals and guitar, Peyton Copes on bass and Jerri Queen on drums—that showcases a melodic, driven and exceedingly catchy sound that’s anything but well behaved. Tweens only formed in 2012, but has already made a name for themselves among fans—including The Breeders, who invited the band to open for them on a recent U.S. tour. The story goes that Kim Deal booked the band for one gig on the recommendation of Jim Blaze, owner of Cincinnati record shop Shake It Records, and was so impressed she brought on band to play select East Coast gigs and a full West Coast tour. Additionally, the band toured with the Black Lips, their partners in a party-centric attitude. Despite the established friends, Tweens are very much their own band, bratty and precocious, sincere and genuine. The band’s name conjuresjust the right image: screaming hordes afflicted with Beatlemania, teenyboppers out for a good time, the underage, over-the-top punks in Ladies and Gentlemen: The Fabulous Stains. Think of cheery kids at their most excited, but juxtaposed with lyrics about bad boyfriends and unrelenting independency. Tweens are not a riot grrrl revisionist band, but they are a ferociously honest one. The trio has come a long way from their early demos and previously released Live at the Mohawk EP. Tweens, is a collection of new, garage-influenced tracks—produced by Eli Janney—sprinkled with some of the band’s older, doo-wop influenced favorites. The first single, “Be Mean,” is a biting anthem, with Battle crooning, “I want you to be mean to me,” while “Forever” harkens back to a girl-gang sound, this time with driving bass. The band sites Bay Area punks The Donnas, The Trashwomen and the Bobbyteens as influences—and that bubblegum badass vibe is apparent throughout the full-length—but the sound Tweens are creating is truly their own. So rat your hair, slip on your leather jacket and hold on tight because Tweens may be young but they’re certainly not naïve, and with the release of this freshman LP, they’re breaking curfew and nobody’s safe.

Hyped London-based post-punk band Savages visited Morning Becomes Eclectic on KCRW to play a set in the studio. Savages a rock band from London and lead singer Jehnny Beth (real name: Camille Berthomier) is from France. The band’s guitarist Gemma Thompson had come up with the name for the band and had been discussing the idea with singer Jehnny Beth for almost a year. Thompson says the band’s name was derived from books, such as Lord of the Flies, that she read when she was younger . The band was eventually formed in October 2011 and they had their first gig in January 2012 supporting rock band British Sea Power. Their manager John Best also manages Sigur Ros. Here is the full session. Enjoy!
Savages Live at KCRW
Tracklist:
1. City’s Full, 2. She Will 3. Waiting for a Sign 4. Hit Me 5. Husbands
This four-piece Brooklyn band of punk rockers who have English punk rock heroes and with the garage rock revival to thank (think the Buzzcocks, Dead Kennedys, The Hives and The Libertines). Lead singer Pat Phillips’ infectious energy, tight, fiery guitars, and boisterous stage presence drive the band. Behind him, guitarist Tyson Moore, drummer Josh Wehle and bassist Paul Lizarraga create fierce post-punk noise. Songs like frantic adrenaline boosters “Ace” and “Borders” as well as the fuzzy, introspective “Jetlagged” have them well on their way to success. You just have to see their gut-punching spirit live to believe it. If you like The Libertines, The Hives, The Dead Kennedys then this band Honduras are for you,
COURTSHIP RITUAL – ” Yellow Spiders “

The Brooklyn duo Courtship Ritual make spare, hushed, minimal indie-pop, like Beach House with a slight dance-music edge, or like the xx with a little more old-school 4AD reverb in their sound. That’s a simple, durable sound, but on their debut album “Pith”, they’re already exploring its edges, changing its definition from song to song. Pith has been out on cassette for a little while now, but it’s about to get a proper wide release. My friend Nick Sylvester produced the album, and he’s putting it out on his Godmode label. And when I say that this is one of the best indie albums you’ll hear this year. I’m saying that because that’s what it is. You can, and should listen now,
BABY STRANGE – Pure Evil “

Baby Strange is the title of a track from T-Rex’s 1972 album The Slider, But now also the name of a three-piece from Glasgow who don’t sound Bolan-esque at all. They’re much more in the vein – pun intended – of those bands who have tended to peddle the idea that they are in touch with rock’s dark, druggy side. Bands who push a nihilistic sensibility and a black aesthetic. Black Rebel Motorcycle Club would be an obvious precedent for these young Scottish gentleman
They’re punk with a dash of grunge and their songs veer between drones and dirges. They wear their art on their sleeve, with their ideas and their worldview made pretty plain. And so just in case you were wondering where they were coming from, their new single is called “Pure Evil” and they’ve got another called Mess. Closer inspection reveals their dark vision is a little unfocused. Pure Evil finds the singer complaining that he is “tired of my generation” . When asked about the song, the singer does indeed admit, “I’m just not very happy with the way things are around me”, and yet he says of the video, “We’re all huge fans of electronic music and we love everything that comes with it.” Bit confusing, that. Same goes for their track Mess. “You people make me sick,” he rails, but it’s unclear which people he’s referring to, and whose side Baby Strange are on. Musically, they’re on the side of good old-fashioned rebel rock, only we don’t know what they’re rebelling against or about. In a way, they’re like a Clash with all the ideology and invective sucked out. They’ve been touring with Palma Violets, another band who some consider to be utterly predictable while others are enjoying presumably as a handy primer on a certain strand of alternative music.
SUMMER CANNIBALS – ” Something Enough “

Portland garage rockers Summer Cannibals are loud, distorted and sound like someone told Haim to fuck off and the Hives to ditch the suits and get sloppy. “Something New” is the first single from Summer Cannibals 2nd full length album “Show Us Your Mind” which is out March 3rd via New Moss Records A song perfectly situated for that moment when your ex just threw all your shit out of a second-story window, “Something New,” from the band’s forthcoming Larry Crane-produced sophomore album “Show Us Your Mind”, does well to prove that its name is a lie: Summer Cannibals songs eat people in the winter, too. Patti Smith is the guiding light for Summer Cannibals, in both name and spirit. The Portland quartet debuted with “No Makeup“ in 2013, carving out garage-punk territory in a region that’s known for some pretty gnarly bands. But for the new album Show Us Your Mind, Summer Cannibals make a big leap. Like Smith, the band understands the power of a good hook smuggled inside the snarl. The songs swagger now as frontwoman Jessica Boudreaux takes more of the spotlight. “I’ve been looking for something new / To keep my hands busy while I get over you,” she sneers on “Something New,” sounding equally menacing and inviting.

“The disembodied figure that is on the cover of the Rose Mountain album is supposed to represent that kind of discord, and that you’re dedicated to this body, and you feel so fragmented, like separate from it, even though it’s something you’re going to have until the day you die, and you have no choice in the matter. You can’t go get a new one.”
SCREAMING FEMALES – ” Criminal Image “

New Jersey punk rock three-piece Screaming Females are one of the best rock bands on the face of the earth presently, and the impending release of their new album “Rose Mountain” is a thing you should be very excited about. We’ve posted three songs from the album thus far, and they’ve all been absolute ass-kickers in very different ways: “Wishing Well,” “Ripe,” “Empty Head.” The latest song they’ve shared is another banger. “Criminal Image” is a hard-rolling riff rocker with a blazing solo and a little bit of piano, something I’ve never heard on a Screaming Females album before. It’s a song to put on when you need to feel invincible. For whatever reason, it comes attached to a video of the three band members brushing their teeth and flossing and using mouthwash.
