Parlophone Records will issue what they are calling a ‘companion piece’ to Metrobolist, last year’s Tony Visconti remix of David Bowie‘s 1970 album “The Man Who Sold The World”. This new collection is a two-CD set called “The Width of a Circle” and features a combination of Ryko-era bonus tracks, BBC live recordings and new mixes, all from 1970.

The first CD features 14 tracks performed by David Bowie and The Tony Visconti Trio (a.k.a. The Hype) for John Peel’s “The Sunday Show” in February 1970 (the label are claiming that six of these are unreleased) while the second disc is very much an ‘odds and sods’ collection of material. It includes some bonus material first heard on CD back in 1989/1990 when Rykodisc began their Bowie reissue campaign.

Such tracks include 1970 single A-side ‘Holy Holy’, the single mix of ‘The Prettiest Star’ (although it’s included here in unreleased alternate mix form – “created for promotion in the US market”), both mono and stereo mixes of ‘London Bye Ta-Ta’ and the A and B-side mixes of ‘Memory of A Free Festival’.

In addition, this CD offers five tracks from a play (“The Looking Glass Murders aka Pierrot in Turquoise”) and five 2020 stereo mixes of some of the non-album material remixed by Tony Visconti. Four of those five are also available on a special 10-inch single (also called The Width of a Circle).

Last month saw the 50th anniversary of the original U.K. release of The Man Who Sold The WorldDavid Bowie’s landmark entry into the 1970s. The album began the collaboration with guitarist Mick Ronson that would continue with such classics as Hunky Dory, Ziggy Stardust and Aladdin Sane. The 2020 re-release of The Man Who Sold The World restored the album’s intended title Metrobolist, while featuring a new mix by original producer Tony Visconti. Taking its name from the album’s opening track, which was named after a painting by Bowie’s friend George Underwood, the new two-CD set The Width Of A Circle acts as a complementary piece to that album. Its 21 tracks feature non-album singles, a BBC In Concert session, music for a TV play and further Visconti remixes wrapping up David’s recordings from 1970 and revealing the first sonic steps toward Hunky Dory.

The two-CD set of The Width of a Circle is presented as one of those DVD-sized, hardcover booksets – a format quite likes even if we can’t recall any David Bowie product being issued in this style before. The book contains 104 pages of content.

The Snuts - W.L

West Lothian, band The Snuts, have been shaking up the UK indie scene for over five years now, blending their mastery of sing-along, festival anthems with dissonant guitars and a touch of Laurel Canyon-esque emotion. Their sophomore EP, The Mixtape received widespread acclaim and landed them in the UK Top 20 and at number one on the Scottish charts, whilst also smashing over 30 million streams.  Their ability to switch between stadium-slaying choruses and ‘60s style funk in a heartbeat. Now set to release their debut album proper – where they worked with Tony Hoffer of Supergrass, Beck and The Kooks fame – the band are poised to become one of the most prominent guitar bands in the country. Guitarist Joe McGillveray talks about curating their album, the influence of Zappa and just being happy to get out of the house. “It’s been a long time coming, but we’ve always been super aware of how important a debut record can be for a band. We’ve had songs for years, but we wanted to make sure that the finished product felt like a polished piece of work. It definitely feels like what we have now is representative of who we are, and something we can be proud of.”

It’s testament to the sheer power of The Snuts that they’ve managed to sell several nights at Glasgow’s iconic Barrowlands before they’ve even released their debut album. But give the band one quick listen and you’ll soon realise that the Scottish lads are already experts at crafting everyman anthems that combine love, loss and the mundanity of everyday life with killer choruses. When that album arrives in early 2021, expect those shows to get even bigger.

“Lived all our best times…” Some of you have successfully second-guessed Brilliant Live Adventures Number 5 edition, on account of it already having been released for streaming last year. The news is that it will be available for pre-order this coming Friday, 26th February, with a release date of 12th March on CD and double vinyl.

On the 24th February 2021 London Parlophone Records is proud to announce the newest instalment of DAVID BOWIE ‘BRILLIANT LIVE ADVENTURES’, a series of six live albums from various 1990s era Bowie performances being released on vinyl and CD as limited one run only pressings. The albums and limited-edition boxes for both vinyl and CD to house the full collection will be available only via the David Bowie official store and Warner Music Group’s Dig! store.

The fifth in the series, out 12th March on CD and double vinyl, is “Something In The Air” (Live in Paris 99) a 15-track live album, featuring 12 previously unreleased recordings and three B-sides of singles from the ‘hours…’ album. The day of the show was a momentous one for Bowie, as that afternoon he was awarded the Commandeurs of the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres, the highest artistic honour that France can bestow.

The Elysée Montmartre performance was one of only seven full shows promoting the ‘hours…’ album. For this special limited run of gigs Bowie dug deep into his back catalogue making these shows particularly memorable. Standout tracks include ‘Can’t Help Thinking About Me’ first released in 1966 and not performed live in over 30 years, ‘Word On A Wing’ from Station To Station reinstated into the set after a 23-year absence, ‘Drive-In Saturday’ performed for the first time since 1974, and ‘hours…’ track ‘Something In The Air’ in its first live performance.

“Something In The Air” (Live in Paris 99) was recorded live at the Elysée Montmartre on 14th October 1999. It was mixed by Mark Plati, and features Bowie backed by Page Hamilton – guitar, Gail Ann Dorsey – bass, vocals, Mark Plati – guitar, Sterling Campbell – drums, Mike Garson – piano, keyboards, synthesisers and Emm Gryner and Holly Palmer – backing vocals.

The Snuts, 2018

West Lothian’s The Snuts have been creating a buzz throughout this previous year, capping off the year with a run of  sold out dates. They issued their “Manhattan Project” single in September and have already lined up shows at Austin’s SXSW . The Snuts released their raucous, hook laden debut album, W.L. on Parlophone Records.

Hailing from Whitburn, West Lothian, The Snuts have well and truly found their stride on W.L.. Produced by Tony Hoffer (Beck, Phoenix, M83) and recorded at the Firepit London, the album encapsulates the band’s journey from four working class kids growing up with a dream in Whitburn, to becoming one of the UK’s most exciting and vital bands of the new decade. The album opens with the poignant track ‘Top Deck’, winding through a voyage of genres including the raw, rousing, hip-hop driven ‘Elephants”, heart-wrenchingly honest ‘Boardwalk’, the undeniable pop banger ‘Somebody Loves You’, the hauntingly heartfelt anthem ‘Always’ and the main stage festival ready hymn, ‘All Your Friends’.

Guitar music may be out of fashion, but Scottish band The Snuts are on course for success in 2020 with their fluid brand of blues and hip hop-driven rock. The four-piece’s debut EP reached number 14 in the charts back in March but, of course, their live dates and release schedule were halted by coronavirus. But now their debut album, WL, is slated for release in March and they have a sold-out gig at legendary Glasgow venue Barrowlands in the diary, things seem brighter.

Their debut EP, titled Mixtape, was overseen by Inflo, the producer behind Michael Kiwanuka’s Mercury Prize-winning Kiwanuka and Little Simz’ Grey Area. This should be a hint towards their evolving sound – experimental, atmospheric, raucous. Adored up and down the country for their uninhibited, sweat-drenched live shows, the band have also announced a UK tour for May/June 2021.

David Bowie's Live Album Series Continues with 'No Trendy Réchauffé'

The second installment in the posthumous David Bowie live series, Brilliant Live Adventures, will capture a 1995 show in Birmingham, England, and arrive November 20th via Parlophone Records.

“No Trendy Réchauffé (Live Birmingham 95)” was recorded at Birmingham’s National Exhibition Centre on December 13th, 1995 as part of the Big Twix Mix Show Festival. While this marks the first full commercial release of the show, excerpts from it were filmed and aired by the BBC, while Bowie’s performances of “Moonage Daydream” and “Under Pressure” were included on the “Hallo Spaceboy” CD single.

The No Trendy Réchauffé setlist boasts rare live performances of “Jump They Say” and “Strangers When We Meet.” The live album will also include two versions of “Hallo Spaceboy,” the second of which was tied to a music video Bowie was set to release for the song at the time, but never did. The track was eventually remixed by the Pet Shop Boys for a single release and an alternative promotional video was made.

Last month, Parlophone Records announced Brilliant Live Adventures, a new series of releases from the late David Bowie collecting six rare and previously unreleased live albums from the 1990s to be released in limited-edition, one-time pressings on both CD and vinyl.  The first three albums have all been promised for release before Christmas, with the remaining trio due early in 2021.  Ouvrez Le Chien (Live Dallas ’95) was the first volume; today, the second has been announced.

“No Trendy Réchauffé (Live Birmingham ’95)” was filmed and recorded almost two months to the day after the Dallas show on Ouvrez Le Chien.  The title phrase translates to No Trendy Rehash, and indeed, Bowie was in spirited, original form that evening in Birmingham.  It was the final night in 1995 of the Outside Tour, and the opening night of the Big Twix Mix Show festival.  Bowie marked the occasions with rare performances of Black Tie White Noise‘s “Jump They Say” and Outside‘s “Strangers When We Meet,” and took the audience on an electrifying trip from past (“Moonage Daydream,” “Under Pressure,” “The Man Who Sold the World,” “Scary Monsters (And Super Creeps)”) to present (“I Have Not Been to Oxford Town,” “The Motel,” “We Prick You,” “Hallo Spaceboy”).

Portions of the show were aired on the BBC, versions as heard here are previously unreleased, presented as exactly as they were performed in Birmingham.  The disc also features a second version of “Hallo Spaceboy,” filmed as “Spaceboy” for a potential music video.  

The concert features Bowie accompanied by Carlos Alomar on rhythm guitar, Reeves Gabrels on lead guitar and vocals, Gail Ann Dorsey on bass and vocals, Zachary Alford on drums, musical director Peter Schwartz on keyboards and synthesizers, George Simms on vocals, and Mike Garson on piano and keyboards.

No Trendy Réchauffé (Live Birmingham ’95) is exclusively available for pre-order now from David Bowie’s official webstore on both CD and vinyl.  The expected ship date is November 18th.

The Brilliant Live Adventure series was announced back in October and will comprise six live albums recorded during the Nineties. The first, Ouvrez Le Chien, featured a Dallas, Texas, show from 1995 and was released at the end of October. One more album is expected to arrive before Christmas 2020, while the remaining three records will be released in early 2021.

Live Birmingham

As hinted by the official David Bowie site earlier this week, there is a new product release for . Parlophone will soon issue as series of Bowie live albums with material recorded between 1995 and 1999 under the banner ‘Brilliant Live Adventures’.

These are six albums which will all be made available on CD and vinyl, but as “limited one run only pressings”. The first release is called “Ouvrez Le Chien”This was previously a streaming-only live album but will be released physically at the end of this month. It features audio recorded at the Starplex Amphitheater, Dallas, 13th October, 1995, during the U.S. leg of the Outside tour.

Brilliant Live Adventures’ will see previously unreleased live recordings by the late star from 1995-1999 released on limited edition vinyl and CD.

Ouvrez Le Chien was produced by David Bowie and recorded by Steve Guest. The musicians are David Bowie – vocals and saxophone, Carlos Alomar – rhythm guitar, Reeves Gabrels – lead guitar and vocals, Gail Ann Dorsey – bass and vocals, Zachary Alford – drums, Peter Schwartz – musical director, keyboards and synthesisers, George Simms – vocals, Mike Garson – piano and keyboards.

I think it’s reasonable to presume that the two other streaming exclusives – Something In The Air (Live Paris 99) listen on will be amongst the remaining five yet-to-be-announced concerts, but we’ll have to wait and see about the other three.

All these live albums will ONLY be available via David Bowie’s online store or the newly rebranded Rhino store ‘Dig!’ and for now Ouvrez Le Chien is the only one you can pre-order.

Parlophone are incentivising you to buy all six albums, by offering empty boxes with ‘Brilliant Live Adventures’. The idea is you buy the boxes to house your purchases. Neither are available yet from the Dig! store – you have to ‘register your interest’ but on Bowie’s shop they are showing as ‘sold out’ (CD was £12, vinyl box £17). As we approach the season of goodwill, you’d think, if you buy all six albums under one account, they might actually GIVE you a box… but apparently not (Disc Union in Japan do this very thing – if you purchase a ‘set’ of mini-LP CD vinyl replicas, they give you a ‘free’ box).

The ‘Brilliant Live Adventures’ reissue series follows a host of David Bowie reissues also shared in 2020.

The star’s 1975 album ‘Young Americans’ received a limited edition vinyl reissue in celebration of its 45th anniversary last month, while ‘Something in the Air (Live Paris 99)’, a 15-track LP capturing Bowie’s 1999 performance in France as part of his ‘Hours Tour’, was also released.

Another Bowie live album, ‘’, came out back in May. Originally available on the now-defunct BowieNet, the record never received a commercial release after it was shared on the online platform 19 years ago.

“Ouvrez Le Chien” will be released on 30th October 2020.

CHANGESNOWBOWIE is a 9-track session recorded for radio and broadcast by the BBC on David’s 50th birthday on 8th January, 1997. The broadcast originally featured an interview with David by Mary Ann Hobbs interspersed with specially recorded birthday messages and questions from the likes of Scott Walker, Damon Albarn, Bono, Robert Smith and many more. The interview and birthday messages do not feature on this album. This mostly acoustic session was a stripped back affair featuring some of David’s favourites of his own compositions and was produced by Bowie himself, Reeves Gabrels and Mark Plati.

The first greatest-hits set was called Changesonebowie, and the title has proven irresistible to his compilers: That collection was followed by 1981’s Changestwobowie, 1990’s Changesbowie, and 1997’s radio special ChangesNowBowie. Interspersing clips of a long interview with Mary Anne Hobbs with exclusive performances recorded during November 1996 rehearsals for his 50th-birthday concert at Madison Square Garden, ChangesNowBowie originally aired on BBC Radio 1 the week of Bowie’s birthday. Bowie was feeling valedictory at the time, a mood that came through in both the musing interviews and the laid-back performances, backed only by guitarist Reeves Gabrels, bassist/vocalist Gail Ann Dorsey, and keyboardist Mark Plati.

The Hobbs-hosted show circulated intact on bootlegs for years, and the official LP was initially slated as a Record Store Day 2020 exclusive. Thanks to COVID-19, the physical release was pushed back, but the digital version is here, and the sanctioned release differs from the fans-only versions in substantial ways. All the interview segments with Hobbes have been excised, as have the birthday wishes from his peers and acolytes, leaving a tight 32 minutes of music—nine songs that appear in a different order than they did in the broadcast.

In strict terms of listenability, all the edits are logical. Radio requires a different rhythm than an album, and the BBC Radio 1 broadcast sometimes bogged down in discussions, albeit many of them fascinating. The show hit its emotional peak with a greeting from Scott Walker, who thanked Bowie “for your generosity in spirit when it comes to other artists. I’ve been the beneficiary on more than one occasion, let me tell you,” a sentiment that left Bowie speechless and teary. It was the one time he let his guard slip in the interview. Throughout the rest of the broadcast, he was garrulous and charming, sounding utterly comfortable embracing his role as an elder statesman of rock.

Unreleased David Bowie concert tapes will be dusted off after 45 years in the vault and released for Record Store Day 2020, Parlophone has announced. “I’m Only Dancing (The Soul Tour 74)”  puts the spotlight on the period between Diamond Dogs and Young Americans as Bowie began embracing the sounds of Philadelphia and emerged with a new reconfigured group, new stage design, and new songs to perform.

The 2-LP or 2-CD set draws from recently discovered tapes of performances at the Michigan Palace in Detroit, recorded in October ’74, and Nashville’s Municipal Auditorium the following month. The setlist covers the full range of his career to date, including tracks that would eventially be released on Young Americans, plus songs from Space Oddity/David Bowie, Hunky Dory, Ziggy Stardust, Pin Ups, Diamond Dogs, and a handful of covers.  The music has been sourced from the best available tapes and while the press release notes that the tapes at times sound their age, the quality never detracts from the performances and the historical significance of these recordings outweighs any possible sonic imperfections.

I’m Only Dancing – Taken from recently discovered sources in The David Bowie Archive, “I’m Only Dancing (The Soul Tour 74)” was recorded mostly during David’s performance at the Michigan Palace, Detroit on 20th October, 1974, with the encores taken from the Municipal Auditorium, Nashville on 30th November, 1974.

The Soul Tour was a radical mid-tour departure from Bowie’s 1974 Diamond Dogs theatrical extravaganza. During a three week break in late 1974, the Diamond Dogs Tour’s elaborate six-ton Hunger City stage set was drastically stripped back, and the tour’s set list overhauled to include as-yet-unreleased tracks from the Young Americans sessions at Sigma Sound in Philadelphia. The Soul Tour also featured a revamped band, augmented to include musicians and vocalists from those sessions, and rechristened The Mike Garson Band.

I’m Only Dancing (The Soul Tour 74) follows on from the previous Record Store Day 2 LP release Cracked Actor (Live Los Angeles ’74) and is an incredible historical document of a performer and band at the height of their live powers. The artwork for both the 2 LP and 2 CD releases is based on the original design for the programmes available at venues for dates on The Soul TourThe Soul Tour has taken a on mythical status among Bowie fans, as the tour only visited 17 cities in the East and South of US. This is the first time that any audio from this incarnation of the tour has ever been officially released.
